The Winx Club's Sodor Adventures - Season 2
Episode 10: The Runaway
Thomas the Tank Engine was ill. Bloom and the workmen had tried to make him better, but it was no use.
"Edward and Tecna must take you to the works," said Sir Topham Hatt.
"Poor Thomas," said Bloom sadly.
"Don't worry, Bloom," comforted Tecna. "Thomas will be alright."
Thomas felt very miserable.
Then Sir Topham Hatt spoke to Duck, "I want you to help Bloom, Percy, Musa, Toby and Roxy while Thomas is away."
"Yes, sir," said Duck.
"And Bloom, you'll work with Duck until Thomas comes back."
"Yes, sir," said Bloom. "Even though I miss Thomas, it'll be nice to be with another engine for a change."
Duck was delighted. He already knew Percy and Musa, and soon made friends with Toby, Roxy, Daphne and Bertie.
Terence the Tractor gave him a big welcome too. "Take care of Bloom and Thomas' coaches," he advised. "He's sure to miss them while he's away."
Duck was very gentle with the coaches. Annie and Clarabel were impressed. "Such nice manners," they told each other. "It really is a pleasure to go out with him."
When Thomas came back, Annie, Clarabel and Bloom told him how well Duck had managed. Thomas was so pleased to be home, that he soon forgot to be jealous.
The works have left Thomas' handbrake very stiff. It made his brakes seen they were hard on, when in fact they were not. As a result, he and his coaches often overran the platform. Thomas found this most embarrassing. Gradually, Bloom learned to be extra careful.
But one day, Thomas' fireman was ill and Daphne took his place. Daphne had fastened the coupling and joined her sister and the stationmaster on the platform to wait for Henry and Flora's passengers. But they forgot all about Thomas' handbrake.
Thomas simmered happily. "Not long now," he thought as he saw Henry and Flora slowly approaching.
But Thomas' brakes were not hard on, and suddenly he felt his wheels begin to move. He tried to stop, but he couldn't without Bloom and Daphne's help. He tried to whistle a warning, but he couldn't do that either. The conductor, Bloom, Daphne and the passengers were all stranded on the platform.
"Stop! Stop!" shrieked Annie and Clarabel. But Thomas, with plenty of steam, kept on going.
The alarm went out down the line.
"Stop the runaway!"
When Bloom got the news of Thomas' recent status, she flew off to the airfield for help. There, ready for action, were Harold and Miss Griselda. Bloom had made a plan, and together they took off into the sky.
At last Thomas was tiring. "I need to stop. I need to stop," he panted wearily.
As they neared Hackenbeck station, Thomas saw Harold land. They entered the platform slowly enough for Bloom to act. Judging her moment, Bloom scrambled into the cab and screwed the brake hard on.
At last Thomas stopped. Both he and Bloom were very relieved. Then they thanked Harold and Miss Griselda.
"Think nothing of it," whirred Harold. "Glad to be at service, anytime."
"Of course," Miss Griselda agreed. "And although I'm gruff and strict, I am concerned for the safety of fairies and engines on Sodor and in Magix."
"Thomas," said Bloom, "are you alright?"
"I'm okay, Bloom," said Thomas. "I'm sorry for causing the delay, but that'll be the last time I leave the works without having my brakes checked."
"We know that it's not your fault," comforted Bloom. "I'll have a little talk with the workmen about your brakes. But we must never let this happen again."
Wearily, Thomas agreed with her.
