The next morning, Ziva walked to the director's office with a tray of coffee in her hand. She knocked on the door before tentatively letting herself inside. She noticed McGee just beginning to stir from his chair, where he'd clearly slept. "Good morning, McGee."

Tim groaned before sitting up in his chair and rubbing the back of his neck. "I doubt there will be much good about it."

"You did not go home last night," Ziva said as she approached him. It wasn't a question. He was still in his clothes from yesterday, and he had clearly been sleeping when she came in.

"No. I spent the night going through all NCIS' active cases. There are dozens in this building alone, let alone every other office we have," Tim said. Honestly, he was grateful for the work though. It kept him busy. He didn't have as much time to worry about Jenny or Gibbs. He didn't get much sleep, but he didn't particularly want to either.

"I brought you coffee," Ziva said before handing him one.

Tim gladly took it. "Thanks, Ziva. I think I should only need about five of these to make it through the day."

"Then I believe you will reach half the amount that Gibbs Drinks every day," Ziva joked.

Tim managed half a smile. "Any news?"

Just then, the door opened revealing Tony. He immediately closed the door and rushed towards the others. "Oh, coffee! One of those is mine, right?"

Ziva rolled her eyes, but handed her partner a cup.

"Thanks, Ziva," Tony said before taking a big gulp. He hadn't gotten much sleep the night before. How could he when the man who had been like a father to him was missing?

"Update me. Do we have an ID on the John Doe in the morgue?" Tim asked.

Tony nodded as he swallowed his coffee. "Yeah, I just came from the lab. Abby matched the blood from our body to one of the samples found at the director's house, and she did get an ID. His name is Alexander Walker. I'll start getting everything I can on him when I get back downstairs. Ziva, you can keep looking into the director's and Gibbs' cases."

"You have any hits on that?" Tim asked.

"Not really. It could be any of them or none of them. Nothing stands out. We have managed to illuminate suspects that do not have the means to have attacked Jenny and Gibbs, and of course the ones that are dead," Ziva explained.

"I think we should expand the search to more than just cases Gibbs and the director worked together. We should look at all of the director's cases. It's possible she was the only target. It was her house, and as far as we know, no one knew Gibbs would be there," Tony said.

Tim nodded. He had considered that himself. It made sense. Unfortunately, it didn't bode well for Gibbs. "I hope you're wrong, Tony."

"So do I," Tony said grimly. He knew what this theory meant for his team leader. If Gibbs had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time, there was no reason for those responsible to keep him alive.

"I do not understand. Why would it make such a difference?" Ziva asked.

"It means Gibbs is collateral damage. It means he might be dead," Tim said sadly.

Ziva shuddered a little at the implication. "There was no blood of his at the scene. I am not saying that doesn't mean he wasn't hurt, but it is likely his blood would've been found if he'd been hurt enough to be killed."

"Yeah. In this case, what we haven't found is reason to be hopeful. We're just saying that this gets worse for Gibbs if the director was the main target," Tim said.

"We don't know for sure that's the case though. We don't know much at all, except that these guys were pros. We didn't find any fingerprints, or any evidence at all except the blood. Plus, they'd have to be strong to best Gibbs and the director," Tony said.

"We can also deduce that there were many of them, at least four or five. We know that one was killed and at least one more was injured. They would have needed two to three uninjured people to force Gibbs and Jenny out of there and remove body of Alexander Walker," Ziva said.

"I agree. These people succeeded because of skill and numbers. We need to find out everything we can," Tim said.

"On it. Let's get to work, Ziva," Tony said before heading for the door.

"If you need something from me, let me know, and update me when you have something," Tim said.

They both nodded and headed out of the room.

A few hours later, Tony and Ziva were back with Tim in the director's office. It was the only place they could talk without risking things getting out to the rest of the agency. They were all sitting around the conference table in the room.

Tony had Alexander Walker's rap sheet up on the plasma screen. "Walker started off small. He had a couple of arrests for possession and assault, but as he grew so did his ambitions."

Ziva nodded. "He is suspected of drug trafficking and gun sales."

"We did suspect that these guys were pros. It sounds like he was," Tim said.

"No match for Gibbs though," Tony said proudly.

"He have any family?" Tim asked.

"A younger sister named Amelia. She's got a clean record. She's our next stop. I checked into our dead guy's financials too. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank. It sounds about right for someone in his business," Tony said.

"Any connection to Gibbs of the director?" Tim asked.

Tony shook his head. "Whatever he was after, I don't think he was in charge."

"So we still do not have much," Ziva said.

"No," Tony confirmed.

Just then, the phone rang. Tim immediately got over and went over to the desk and answered it. "McGee. Yes. What hospital? And what's his condition?"

Tony and Ziva both got up and went over to their friend. They both appeared worried and anxious.

"Okay, thank you," Tim said before hanging up.

"What's going on?" Tony immediately asked.

"When I asked Metro to let me know about any gunshot victims, I also asked them to let me know if they found anyone matching Gibbs or the director's descriptions. Officers were called to the scene when a man with Gibbs' description was found beaten and shot on the side of the road on the outskirts of town." Tim explained.

"Is he alive?" Tony asked, afraid of the answer.

"Barely," Tim said. From what the detective said on the phone, the man that was found had barely made it to the hospital, and there wasn't much hope held out for him.

"Let's go. I will drive to the hospital," Ziva said.

Both men nodded and followed her out.
