A/N: I hope the readers of my RLNT fics will forgive me for using the site's recent wonkiness to postpone updating and using the 'extra' week to do justice to the end of the current story, A Wolf in the Moonlight, before starting the next adventure. If this poem provides any consolation, I will be a happy writer! For those who haven't read my stories, I hope this poem creates an irresistible urge to do so. :D
-
I'm playing with
fire,
risking pain,
for the chance to feel
warm again.
I tell myself
I'm prudent.
I'll stand back,
and enjoy
heat
from a safe distance.
-
Hands outstretched,
I'm so tempted
by
the flames
beckoning
with fiery fingers.
Slowly,
I inch forward.
-
Drawn,
a moth
to seductive light,
trembling.
I'm so cold.
Would it really hurt
to continue onward?
-
I'm still
protected
from sparks that fly
with wild abandon.
Free
of the smoke
that stung
my eyes at other bonfires.
-
Icy wind
blows
against my skin.
Perhaps
I'll slide a little nearer.
Feel the coldness
recede,
driven back
by the warmth
craved
so badly
I almost cry.
-
If only
fears
faded like mist.
I would
risk the burn
to feel the caress
of shining heat
thawing
frozen places
in my heart.
-
I stare
longingly
at the fire,
praying
for strength
to take another step
closer.
I sigh.
