They had been on Earth X for the best part of the week, which had been something of a mixed experience. On the one hand, they had been working alongside the Resistance, helping to ensure the surrender of residual Nazi forces - or taking part in the fighting if need be. What Schott described as the 'pyrotechnics' of Ray and F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. had been particularly effective, supported by Carter's and Kendra's aerial attacks and Nora's telekinesis - Rip and Eve had actually begun to feel a bit like second raters.
''But we didn't really anticipate how complex things would be here' Rip told Eve, in an effort to boost his own morale as well as hers.
He was right. The Resistance - technically a worldwide undertaking - was under the control of a number of independent Generals and other leaders. Different branches had different approaches to their residual foes. North America, under Schnott, favoured capture, imprisonment and labour for the benefit of the liberated population. Nyssa and Talia, by contrast, took the traditional League of Assassins view - ''the League does not take prisoners''.
Working alongside the North American branch of the Resistance had reduced the pool of potential recruits Savage had to choose from. Which raised the question - where was Savage? They had seen nothing of him or his group during that time. Result - some of the local Resistance were beginning to doubt he even existed.
''The more obvious solution'' Rip declared in defense of his team ''is that the Greenworld mission was a big success.''
He was actually feeling quite impressed by the re-assembled Legends, who seemed to be a more cohesive group than they had the first-time round. Having memories of their earlier mistakes to reflect on probably helped with that.
Be that as it may, Savage's nonappearance on the scene had made him think that it might well be time they headed back to check up on the other team and hear what had happened on Greenworld. The attempted attack on Kendra and Nora - had how it ended - further inclined him to that view.
Ray, when Eve came to ask him, agreed. He'd spent much of the afternoon, trying to console Nora, who was more than a little upset over her lapse into the use of dark magic.
''They were trying to kill you'' he pointed out ''and at least some of them will recover.''
''I know'' she said, touching his face lightly - she was plainly willing to take comfort from him.
But he had a feeling there was something more to this -. He slipped a finger under her chin and lifted her face so he could look into her eyes.
''Nora - is there something else you want to tell me?''
''Nothing'' she replied quickly - too quickly.
He let it go - for now.
Silently she was thinking about that part of the attack and its aftermath. A well-worn phrase drifted into her mind - 'we need to talk'. Absolutely, she thought, any kind of raw power of that magnitude can be dangerous. She was still struggling with the fact that he'd been able to sense and reach her from wherever he was - possibly on Greenworld.
