Chapter Twenty-Three: Resolutions

The first course of action was reviewing her study methods. Spoken like a true nerd.

At first glance, her grades, science and language subjects seemed to be faring well but her performance for math - oh gosh, math - was so damn tragic. She might have hope of solving math questions if she had a whole day to do them, but under timed conditions, her brain just short-circuited. Shut down. Her conclusion? It was time she started pressurizing herself to time her practices and do drills on her weakest topics.

A formula sheet, painstakingly printed and pasted to her table was what she glared at every morning when she woke up.

Moving on to something less dry - the second course of action. Her fitness.

Reasonably speaking, Morie knew she seemed scrawny and small. She knew that she placed 15th on the Quirk Assessment Test - but that test had hardly been fair anyway, and by human standards, she knew she was far from physically weak. Granted, she had not started formal physical training until she had figured out that she was applying to Yuuei, but she was a lot stronger than she used to be.

Her regimen was less strict that they were often getting physical workouts in school, outside of her existing evening jogs; she had also taken up wearing weighted bands on her limbs, shamelessly loaned (-slash- stolen, thanks to her dad) from her mother's stash of weights. Gradually, she would increase the weight - hopefully, combined with her daily conditioning exercises her overall strength and condition would improve.

The third and perhaps the most crucial action to her was her quirk training.

Pressure, for the lack of a better word, had been a bitch from the very start - but if she wanted to improve, that mentality had to go. Her mother had given her some advice on her techniques, which she planned to follow. While their quirks differed fundamentally, her mom did share tips on aspects they both had difficulty in - the science behind the movement of air. After recognising that her aversion to the side-effects of her quirk was making her use it far too conservatively, Morie (armed with a shit ton of pain and nausea medicine) was determined to tear down her former limits. Project ART (Accuracy, Range & Tenacity) was going to succeed if it was the last thing she did.

And speaking of art -

The last (and perhaps the most difficult) course of action she decided on was for her art business to go on a semi-hiatus.

It was possibly the hardest decision to make - there were days where she only got by because she could paint, because she was able to express feelings she could not express with words through the lines traced out by her liners, or through the colours of her paints. She loved art, and her art business was hands-down one thing she had accomplished in this lifetime that she was proud of; she had spent so much time growing her page, putting it into the public eye.

But the fact was it was simply too time-consuming. While Morie was still in school, she had to prioritise her time better. The time she spent indulging herself in her art was time that could be spent bettering her skills. Bettering herself.

Right now, she could not afford to lag behind her classmates even more than she was already.

('A student's duty is to study!'

Morie could almost hear the class president Iida hollering, and let out a giggle, in spite of herself.)

The good thing was that she did not have to stop drawing.

Perhaps she would be able to fit in simple sketches here and there, but most commissions were too time consuming. Drawing would go back to being purely recreational, for a bit. And there was no denying that there were some upsides to this temporary break; for one she would not have to worry about churning out pieces when she had no time, energy, or motivation.

Drafted, and... posted.

The brown-haired girl ran a hand through her dark brown strands, posting her status update on her page for the last time. The avid art fanatic scrolled through her pieces longingly - from her first pieces many years ago (which she normally hated to look at, even though people seemed to love them,) to the pictures of the first convention where she had set up stall in, and sold her works physically, for the first time - to her latest and perhaps most impressive piece yet, the inverted Sunset for Todoroki.

It was bittersweet, and Morie let her mind to wander for a few reminiscing moments.

'I'll be back,' she finally promised herself, logging off the page with a sort of finality.

One day.

For some reason, her mind drifted then to Bakugou Katsuki, her irritable (and irritating) neighbour. Perhaps it was the regret she felt upon remembrance of all the times she had inwardly written him off as a heartless jerk, when he was in reality as vulnerable as any one of them. The only difference? His sheer determination which seemed to far outweigh anyone else's, his infectious and almost single-track desire to be Number One.

No, better than Number One.

There was no denying it. By all means, Mr Spiky Hair was nowhere near 'all bark and no bite'. An unconventional role model, but perhaps a far more unconventional leader.

'He's far stronger than me, physically and mentally,' the thought flit across her mind. A few months ago it may have been met with a solemn glumness - yet now the thought filled her with a feeling akin to reverence. A strange resolve, that wasn't exactly acceptance.

As Morie used her quirk to fling tennis balls at the tiny targets she had hung up in her room, a sudden startling explosion noise made her jump, causing her flying tennis balls to thump to the ground. It was accompanied by the loud, pissed off shouting from next door - a unique blend of voices that could only be Bakugou and Mitsuki.

Speak of the devil.

With a disgruntled grumble, Morie got the balls back up in the air. They swirled around her as if they were trapped in a miniature hurricane, though when she launched them towards the targets, only two of them hit. One of them flew completely past the target and hit her window, before sadly bouncing back onto the floor. Involuntarily, her face blanched in chagrin.

Man, I have a lot of work to do.

.

(;´Д`)

.

Still way too early.

Unsurprisingly, the classroom was empty. Perhaps it was weird that Morie arrived in class so early, but by now it had become a habit. Not that she was complaining - she enjoyed the (temporary) peace and quiet. Hell, even Iida was not here yet.

Morie sat down at her table, pulling out her school notes for a quick read before lessons started. After the quick refresher, she kept her notes and put them away, and instead took out her phone. She began to type out all that she had memorised that morning on the train to school onto an online document - lately she decided that it was more practical to slowly transfer her notes online where she would always be able to refer to them.

It also went without saying that it was less conspicuous than reading from her notes in class; Morie loved her friends but they would definitely tease her for studying so hard. After all, she already called herself a nerd on a daily basis, she did not really need her friends to add in to that equation.

Jokes aside -

Her studying was momentarily paused as her phone vibrated. Ren had finally replied to her message, it seemed.

.

BAEREN: sflr man, i was rushing homework

BAEREN: shiketsu is crazy strict;;; it's like a military school or sth i swear, at least the uniforms are cute

BAEREN: anywayyy omg I'm proud of you! my child has been making so many friends

BAEREN: all guys too;)

rie: Dudeee -_-

BAEREN: what? gurl be grateful, your school doesn't ban relationships like mine :(

BAEREN: like;; i can't ask out your cousin even

rie: I doubt you would have much luck with him even without that rule in place

rie: he is denser than a brick wall,,, what do you see in him man

BAEREN: but he's so cute! like a hyperactive puppy

rie: He likes smashing his face into the floor, hyperactive is an understatement

rie: You know he's one of the reasons i made myself learn first-aid? that's how worried he makes me

BAEREN: okay fine he's a weirdo! but still cute so don't attack me

.

Morie read Ren's last message with a long, long sigh.

Her cousin did not deserve Ren in any way. He was too foolish. Too brash.

Damn, he's making me sound like an nagging old man.

Admittedly he was pure - she would give him that, at least - but nowhere as lovable as Kirishima or most of the people in 1A. In fact, if he was still anything like he was as a child (unlikely, but she would not be surprised), he was probably still pushy and overzealous. Maybe he had gotten better, mellowed himself out in high school or something, but Morie could not really tell if he had from his occasional texts.

(Which were always in all-caps, so it truly did not help his case.)

Well, I might be a bit biased.

Oh well.

.

rie: Fine, you do you

rie: ... also, uh

rie: I kinda shut down my art page for the time being.

.

Morie shut her phone and placed it on the table, feeling apprehensive about Ren's would-be response - however, of all people, her friend decided to know about her temporary hiatus.

It was the art page which had brought the two together in the first place, when popular demand made Morie to run a booth in a small scale convention years ago - the two then-strangers had met, and the rest was history.

At this point, the students of 1-A had started streaming in slowly. The brown-haired girl smiled and waved at Tsuyu as the frog-like girl came in, feeling almost shy. Then Tsuyu waved back with a good-natured, closed-eyed smile, and Morie could not help but beam at her.

She had adorable classmates, and seeing them again after the eventful week made her heart feel lighter.

The class did seem livelier than usual, however, filled from a buzz that was because of their one week of internships. Through the class door, the dark-haired girl caught sight of a familiar plain-faced boy and a head of red hair, and her dark eyes promptly lit up.

"Yo!"

Her hand raised to high-five Kirishima and Sero as they entered the room together, making their way to their seats. "How were internships?"

"It was fine," Sero shrugged before letting out a loud groan. "When the interns were stuck in the office sometimes though, guess who got treated like a tape dispenser! Which ain't wrong, but I kinda wish it could have been more hands-on, y'know?"

"Awww man, I don't blame them. You are the bestest tape dispenser," Kirishima replied, sharp teeth pointed in a bright grin. Sero rolled his dark eyes and elbowed him in mock exasperation. "Fourth Kind really ran me and Tetsutetsu to rags though, it was super intense. Loved it, though - he was so damn manly!"

"Oh, you guys had another student from Yuuei too," Morie hummed, remembering the guy from class 1-B who had the ability to harden himself like metal.

Two literal tough guys under a 'tough guy mentor'. Seems interesting.

(... it made her wonder how her mother's agency had decided on her and Shinsou, if there was any reason at all.)

"Oh? Who went to Coriolis' place with you?" Sero piped up, black eyes blinking at her curiously.

"Uhhh," maybe she felt like she was gossiping, as for some reason an uncharacteristic shyness suddenly rushed over her. "You know Shinsou? That guy that Midoriya fought against."

"Woaaah," chimed in a new voice. Kaminari had made his way over to their table where he pulled over a chair to join in on the conversation. He casually propped both his arms against the back of the chair, yellow eyes surveying them with interest. "Not surprised though, his quirk is crazy cool. So y'all talking about internships? Mineta over there just up and died on me."

Morie's eyes darted warily at the small, perverted grape boy. True enough, he looked like he had aged significantly, his soul seeming to seep out of his mouth with every passing minute.

"All women are just hiding their true natures…"

He was looking pointedly at Uraraka, who seemed to be in zen mode, a fiery aura looming around her. Morie was admittedly amazed (yet somehow terrified) at how the girl's pure Soft energy had dissipated in the span of a mere week.

"Mt Lady, right?" Morie turned back, raising an eyebrow meaningfully at the yellow-eyed boy next to her. "Told you so. I actually feel bad for him, for once."

Kaminari threw hands. "But she's such a babe. How the heck can you even tell?"

In response, the Pressure user giggled, sweeping back her dark bangs. The corners of her lips curled up, and she shrugged lazily. "Gut feeling."

"Bullshittttt." Mr Pikachu shot back in disbelief, and she lightly rolled her eyes.

At this point, the door slammed open dramatically.

In movies, this probably would have been the clichéd scene where the main Heroine, after going through a wholeass one-eighty makeover, would strut into her class, instantly gaining the affection and favour of all her classmates. Not to mention, also gaining the attention of a romantic interest, which the whole makeover would have been geared towards.

Instead, in stormed Bakugou Katsuki, looking like he wanted to kill somebody (which was in hindsight, a normal look for him.) His ash blonde hair was still stuck in that flattened, shiny side parting from his time with Best Jeanist.

So promptly Morie blinked, as the lower jaws of her classmates fell to form wide-eyed gawks. The former Mr Spiky Hair's red eyes looked around the glass menacingly, as if issuing out a wordless challenge.

Silence. Then -

"Really, Bakugou?!"

Kirishima and Sero were collapsing over themselves, laughing their asses off. "Shit! That hairrrr someone take a picture!"

"I got it!" Mina called out in a sing-song voice, an impish grin spreading on her pink face. In that span of time, at least five other phones were whipped out to point at the blonde, snapping away frantically. "Heyyy Bakugou! Say cheese!"

"Stop laughing - and stop taking my picture dammit! It's stuck like this even after a good washing," Bakugou barked out roughly, grasping hopelessly at his hair. Kirishima and Sero only cackled louder as the Explosion user rounded on them. "Shuddap, I'll goddamn murder you all!"

It seemed even Bakugou was capable of feeling embarrassed or at the very least self-conscious, for his red eyes swept the room angrily and briefly met her gaze. Morie only stared back with the faintest of amusement - the girl had already laughed her ass off the past few days during the brief moments of joint Internships.

"Water and baking soda helps, dude," she called out against her better judgement, feeling slightly sympathetic (yet also grossed out, imagining the amount of buildup in his hair.

Nasty.)

Poof!

His irritation had evidently reached its peak at last, for his hair promptly exploded back into shape the moment the words left her mouth. Morie couldn't help but grin - Mr Spiky Hair was finally back, in all his bristling glory!

"Thanks a lot, old man." He scoffed, his voice dripping with biting sarcasm.

His teeth then bared themselves, growling still at the classmates around them, prompting her to roll her eyes at her new nickname. The laughter did not cease, not even for one bit. In fact, the appearance of Bakugou's normal hair seemed to only intensify the outroar.

Wait, so this is why he was screaming so much over the past weekend?

'Poor guy,' Morie mused, inwardly shaking her head. Hair products really did suck sometimes.

Her phone vibrated then. Not knowing what to expect, there was a moment of hesitation before the Pressure user hastened to open the message.

.

BAEREN: ahhh;;

BAEREN: you feeling alright?

rie: Yeah, don't worry about it

rie: I just need time to get my shit together haha

BAEREN: alright. lmk if you ever need to talk about anything okay?

rie: Yup, definitely. thanks man!

rie: (heart)

.

Morie put down her phone, and smiled. There had been a part of her who had been worried that Ren would for some reason get mad at her decision. Irrational, perhaps, but the thought had weighed down on her quite a bit. Amidst the ongoing chaos in the classroom, only gratitude was on her mind as she thought of how blessed she was to have Ren as a friend.

Honestly, what did I do to deserve someone like her again?

.

(ꐦ ಠ皿ಠ )(ꐦ ಠ皿ಠ )(ꐦ ಠ皿ಠ )

.

"Woah, Midoriya?! What's with those moves?"

There was a special sort of awe-inspiring quality in watching the normally meek Midoriya, who always had difficulties with his powerful quirk, fly and jump through the terrain with a nimbleness that even exceeded Sero's - without breaking anything, for once.

As she watched on, almost feeling herself burst with pride for how far the fluffy green-haired boy had come. Yet as the rest of the class watched on in astonishment, Morie could distinctly pick up a murderous energy from the sidelines. Her dark eyes flicked over to the source, making out Bakugou, whose crimson eyes were narrowed dangerously. His fists were tightly clenched and he was near shaking from fury.

Right.

Soaring through the air, Midoriya's movements through the air right now were the spitting image of Bakugou's own moves. She knew that, after having mimicked the blonde herself during the preliminary of the Sports Festival. the way he propelled himself upwards in the air. Seeing Bakugou's expression really got her wondering what he was thinking - was he perhaps feeling threatened by the sheer rate Midoriya was improving? Or was he perhaps thinking that Midoriya was mocking him with his own moves?

Morie turned her attention back to the screen, silently smacking herself. It was honestly none of her business.

The first round of training ended with Sero still managing to clinch first place (as she had originally anticipated), after Midoriya had a nasty slip-and-fall incident.

There was an uproar as the group eventually rejoined them moments later. The class practically swamped Midoriya as the fluffy green-haired boy reappeared, looking extremely winded. She kind of felt bad for him - he had been so damn close.

"You did great, Midoriya!" Morie hesitantly called out as she caught his eyes, shooting him a thumbs-up. In response he managed to let out a small 'thanks', seemingly embarrassed by all the attention he was receiving suddenly.

"Next group! Be ready!"

All Might's bellow could be heard from where he was standing. One cue, Tokoyami, Uraraka, Aoyama, Kaminari and Bakugou stepped forward. Amidst all the cheers they were receiving, she couldn't help but notice how Bakugou had stormed past Midoriya without so much as a glance.

"Start!"

Uraraka seemed to have the advantage in the beginning as she simply made herself float towards the centre of the training grounds, while Tokoyami was using Dark Shadow to propel himself over the buildings.

"DIEEEE- "

In a split second, both of them were ruthlessly overtaken by Bakugou, who tore past them in a blur of red and black. His hands sputtered with explosions as he soared over the others, reflexively maneuvering around the pillars in his path and before long, landing on the platform with a growl. Despite placing first, he did not seem triumphant at all, instead sullenly standing on the platform, his eyes looking dark.

Morie could feel his murderous aura from a mile away, and with the way his eyes were shooting daggers at the fluffy green-haired boy nearby, it did not take a genius to put two and two together. The Explosion user was ticked off that Midoriya had once again made a drastic improvement, this time even mimicking his own trademark moves.

"Congratulations, young Bakugou!" She could hear All Might congratulating him, out of curiosity shooting a glance at Midoriya - he had a deep look of contemplation on his face, however, and did not seem to be paying attention to the exchange.

Soon enough, the last round had come, and Morie stepped out along with her other classmates. Her eyes examined her competitors for this round: Tsuyu, Shoji, Jirou and Todoroki. A look of chagrin flashed over her features as she rubbed the back of her neck from the almost excessive cheers she was receiving from Mina, Sero and Kirishima, who seemed an inch away from busting out streamers and pong pongs.

A thumbs-up was sent their way with a shy smile, before Morie hurried off to her starting platform.

Tsuyu had advanced reflexes and agility, not to mention jumping ability. Shoji would be able to create extra limbs which could potentially help propel himself over the buildings. Jirou's earphone jacks could extend a considerable distance; perhaps she could propel herself somehow from the force of her sounds, or use her earphone jacks as a means of grappling? Then there was Todoroki, who was ever-reliant on his quirk - he would likely surf through the grounds on a massive ice trail.

(It went without saying that there was one person in particular that Morie wanted to beat.

Scratch that - she wanted to win this entirely.)

Feeling unused to the new competitiveness that surged within her, the Pressure user considered her options. Sure, she could enhance her running and jumps with her quirk and parkour over the buildings - but there was something in particular that she wanted to try again, and would only be able to do so here during training. It took a while, but she finally drilled it into her head that Pressure was so much more than an enhancement quirk.

Flight.

Morie had attempted travelling by air more times than she could count but had yet to find a reliable way she could travel in air - until her internship at Coriolis' Office, that is.

A long time ago, she had attempted running in air, which was too demanding (and it had led to disastrous consequences, she might add.)

On a whim, Morie had also once attempted to propel herself through the air by releasing high pressure from her hands like how her hot-headed neighbour did it. It made her question why she had thought that Bakugou's way of soaring through the air was suitable for her, when her quirk wasn't limited to her hands. Perhaps she subconsciously viewed Bakugou to be better, more refined in his technique than her - but no more.

Project ART was underway. Number one on her checklist was mastering flight once and for all, taught by none other than Coriolis herself. In her head, all the calculations and ideas on how she would carry this out were all settled, and she had polished up some approximations from the last time she had flown with Coriolis. Over the past few weeks, her range had increased (now six-point-six meters from a measly five metres when the term started.) First she had to use her range to its maximum, and while imagining the points around her she had to increase the pressure. The air was swirling around her now, slowly but surely.

The last thing Morie needed was a final push of confidence - a leap of faith. After all, she had done this once, and she would do it again. Even if her mother was not here to guide her.

"Start!"

(So leap she did.)

Her heart soared as her feet lifted from the ground and stayed lifted from the ground. She willed the pressure around her to increase, and the winds were spinning around her now with manic intensity. The funnel of wind she was surrounded by whipped at her face and her hair, but she could not help the pure exhilaration that was bubbling within her - and without meaning to, a laugh escaped her mouth.

I'm flying.

In the distance, she could see Todoroki, rapidly approaching the platform, majestic trails of ice in his wake. Gritting her teeth, Morie willed for a final push as she reached out towards the platform, towards where All Might was standing.

She ejected herself from her own personal tornado, reducing the pressure in front of her as she propelled herself through the air, tumbling onto the platform without a semblance of grace - though this time at least, she managed to at least soften her landing with a small blast of air. The winds dissipated behind her, and as the adrenaline wore off, a pounding migraine started to creep in.

"Ow," the brown-haired girl contemplated just lying on the ground for a moment, before she clambered up to her feet to dust herself off. Her head hurt, and she probably had a few budding bruises, but overall, it had gone better than she thought it would. Even her migraine was not as bad as the ones she were used to - hell yeah, was this hopefully a sign that she was finally discovering a more efficient way to use her quirk?

"Congratulations on reaching me first, young Minamoto!" All Might boomed, his pearly teeth glinting almost blindingly in the sunlight, and Morie inwardly winced as his loud voice aggravated her migraine. "That was certainly very impressive!"

Morie rubbed the back of her neck, feeling bashful - compliments were very much foreign to her. But nonetheless, she managed a small bow, smiling up sheepishly at the goofy Number One Hero of a teacher. "Thanks, sensei. The internship was very helpful."

As the others began to reach the platform one by one, her dark eyes looked up to meet mismatched ones abruptly. The brown-haired girl almost turned away out of habit but managed to stop herself in time.

"Good job!" Morie blurted out, stepping towards the boy. Todoroki sent her a sideways glance.

"Thanks," came his even response, and a wave of déjà vu hit her. Morie vaguely remembered a time long ago, where Todoroki had shot down her good will and proceeded to insult her instead.

('You're the daughter of Coriolis, the Wind Hero, aren't you? Holder of the Number Three rank and a rival to my old man, Endeavour.')

The hard, cold look in his dual-coloured eyes back then was an expression she would never forget, and his scathing words rang in her head as clear as day.

('It seems that the difference in abilities between our parents has also been extended to us.')

Todoroki cleared his throat, before bowing his head in a nod.

"Same goes for you... you seem to be coming to terms with your quirk too," he paused, and his multi-coloured eyes darted down towards his left hand before raising themselves to meet her dark gaze once more. "I won't lose to you the next time, though."

"I look forward to that." The Pressure user chuckled back amicably, and held out her fist expectantly towards him. A frown crossed her face when he stared at her hand in remarkably confused silence.

"Uh," she started. "It's a brofist - so you bump your fists together like this- "

Morie tried to bump the back of her fist against his, but sighed as he merely blinked, still seeming very much looking lost. "Never mind, man. Let's go back to class."

With a tiny wave of farewell at the dual-haired boy, Morie made to rejoin the girls as class ended, and they headed off towards the changing room together.

The small brown-haired girl was humming now, in a good mood over the fact that she had just found a new friendly rival in Todoroki Shouto. Awkward as they were, perhaps they could actually manage to make this 'friends' things work one day.

Right now, Todoroki may be leaps and bounds above her in terms of strength, but that knowledge surprisingly didn't deter her one bit. Rather, it made her more determined than ever to keep working hard.

How well quirk training that day went made her feel lighter than she did in days; hopeful, even. She even caught herself thinking that it was perhaps a good omen.

One step at a time.

In spite of herself, Morie smiled.

A/N:

A shitpost transition chapter turned class texting fic.

Swapped up the canon classroom sequence for a nicer flow!

tldr; morie's resolutions, post-internship shenanigans, quirk training, and the formal naming of class 1-A's group chat!

Went with ichbinnureinnutzer's idea for class name, bc I love Dadzawa too! Changed it to Aizawa's Children instead though so that the initials would align with 'A Class' :D Thank you for participating hehe and do let me know by review/DM what you would like your SD-verse one-shot to be about!

Thanks for reading! And do let me know what are your thoughts ahaha before I continue on to a less chaotic chapter HAHA. Also 2 more weeks til my school starts so expect slower updates :(

Cheers!
