Author's Note Um. I realize this may make no sense whatsoever..but, yeah. This takes place before Hotaru broke free of Mistress 9, before she met Chibiusa, even.

Hotaru stared out the window, watching the moon sit in the indigo sky. Such a beautiful sight. The moon reminded her of a lantern, a glowing lantern that always attracted fireflies like herself.
Yes, Hotaru Tomoe was a firefly, a firefly that had been caught and trapped in a sealed glass. She longed for freedom. She longed for friends, longed for a way to kill this aura of loneliness that seemed to surround her wherever she went.
But, there was a voice, a voice that remained in the back of her mind, one that didn't come out until it saw fit― but it was always there. Hotaru knew, oh yes, she knew. The girl couldn't tell anyone about this voice, however. People already thought her creepy, she didn't want them thinking she was insane, as well. Though, if someone did happen to question her sanity, she wouldn't deny the fact that she was dysfunctional.
So she kept all her secrets to herself.
"Hotaru," it whispered. "Staring longingly out at the moon won't make it come closer."
"I know," Hotaru answered sadly. "I know."
"Stupid girl, if you want something, don't just stand there wishing for it. Get it."
"Freedom is impossible," Hotaru replied, "when you're locked in a glass that's walls you can't break.."
"If you push hard enough, they will crack," the woman's voice told her.
Hotaru thought about the female's words. They made sense, oddly enough. "Who are you?" Hotaru asked. "Who are you?"
"My name is irrelevant. Call me Mistress 9."
"Mistress 9," Hotaru repeated. "That's pretty, but why are you a mistress?"
There was a pause. "Let's just say I haven't broke my own glass' walls yet."
Hotaru's eyes widened. "You're a firefly, too?"
Mistress 9 chose her words very carefully. "..Not a firefly. I don't know what I am."
The young girl pushed a lock of black hair behind her ear, thinking. "Maybe I could help you figure it out. But..I don't understand. Why are you here?"
Mistress 9 contemplated answering this question or not. "I need freedom, too, and my moon just can't find it's way to me."
"I'm sorry," Hotaru said quietly. "Freedom isn't free. I wonder why it's called freedom."
"It may not be free, but you can buy it, and you yourself have to decide whether you want it cheap or costly," Mistress 9 answered wisely.
Firefly smiled. "I know who you are now, Mistress 9. You remind me of a spider. A wise old spider. The kind that builds it's web in the darkest places, so only it's victims can find it."
Mistress 9 was shocked. Her host knew who she was, when even she herself wasn't sure?
"I know why you're here, too. Every spider needs a lonely firefly to lure in and devour, so it can grow stronger, and one day, sneak out of the darkness to bathe in light."
It was spider's turn to smile. She had chosen her food well. "Yes, and I've got you drawn into my web, Hotaru Tomoe."
Owari.
