Petunia

James Potter stared in shock, in fear, in utter confusion at the person standing in the doorway.
Standing in front of James, was the infamous Petunia Evans- piercing gray eyes that drove fear and anger into the pits of his soul.
"Potter." It was then he realized that the person standing there was really, honest to Merlin related to Lily Evans. You wouldn't have guessed it. She was tall, with straight brown hair and those piercing gray eyes. While Lily was rather short, with green eyes and wavy red hair. It was in the way she spat his name, as if it was a thousand times worse than the most vulgar terms imaginable, he recognized the relation.
"Petunia."
"Listen MagicBoy, as much as I hate to be here, we have to talk."
"About what?" Sneering, James Potter turned to look at her. "Lily?" He knew the pain and hurt Lily felt because of her sister- it was enough to make him wish the worst upon her.
"She's my sister, Potter. No matter how hard of a concept that is to grasp, its true. I know her better than any one else on this earth, I know that she is deathly afraid of mice but at the same time she refuses to let my parents set traps. I know she can't Venison because a baby doe once approached her during a camping trip. I knowshe's been hurt before, Potter.
I've watched her fall and get back up too many times to count. I've seen her hurt, and I've seen her happy. For years I held a position higher than any other, and as a sister I was closer than any best friend could ever be. I will never forgot those years, and what I've learned about her during that time.
And I'm not going to lie, Potter, I hate you and your kind more than you will ever know. You took Lily away from me, and for that I will never be able to forgive you. Regardless of how I feel towards you, I still feel compassion towards her. As hard as I've tried to cut the connection, to isolate myself completely, I haven't been able to. I'm getting married soon, I'll have my own family and my own life- and then, just maybe I'll be able to forget. But until then, I have to live with the fact that I don't want to see her hurt.
She's been hurt before. Hurt more than you could ever imagine Potter. I watched her build a shield around herself, and as she walked out of my life and into yours, I knew she still had that shield.
And that Potter, is why she reactive towards you as she did. You symbolized pain and hurt to her, and she avoided you, protecting herself from any future harm.
I, more so than any one else, understand how much of a mistake that is. It is better to have risk pain for love, than to have not loved at all.
She may be incredibly book smart, but she has no idea what a huge mistake she is making.
She loves you Potter. She loves you more than anything else, yet she has no idea.
She smiles when she receives your letters. Its a brief smile, but warmth and compassion fills her eyes and she looks like a young girl in a candy shop. But then the shield takes over, and fear fills those same green eyes as she rips the letters to shreds.
She's only trying to protect herself, but she has done the opposite. You would be good for her Potter, but she hasn't had the chance to find that out.
Don't give up on her Potter."
And with that, Petunia Evans curtly turned on her heel and walked out the door, and by doing so walked out of her sister's life.
Until a small bundle found its way onto her doorstep years later...
"...He has Lily's eyes..."
