Chapter 8: A Cracking Good Time

They had tanks, helicopters, even bulldozers… not to mention the equivalent of a full platoon of armed men, roaming around toting huge guns. The footmen didn't even look like WOOHP agents, giving off the impression of a completely different organization- with no marks, or logos, anywhere on them.

The only people who seemed to belong to WOOHP were Jerry, along with two other agents trailing behind him.

"Give it up girls… we have you surrounded…" Jerry's voice boomed, amplified by the small megaphone he held.

"Scatter!" Ron shouted, the girls instantly complying.

All of them ran in different directions, as quickly as they could.

Sam used the smoke and debris as cover to make her getaway, vanishing in mere moments.

Alex took advantage of the open drain next to her, jumping down without a sound.

Clover simply sprinted away from Sam, into the still-intact part of the building.

Ron took off north, moving as fast as he could while he still had the chance.

"Keep a tight perimeter! Don't let them get away!" Jerry ordered his men.

After a few minutes of moving around and changing directions, Ron had lost his pursuers. He had deliberately chosen to draw a bit of extra attention to himself, to take some of the heat off the girls.

Making sure the coast was clear, he moved from roof to roof before spotting Sam. She was crouched down in an ally, next to a dumpster. Ron jumped down silently, tapping her on the shoulder.

The redheaded spy instantly turned, ready to release a shout. The ex-sidekick put his palm over her mouth, effectively silencing her. "Relax Sam, it's me…"

The spy nodded and he removed his hand. "S-sorry, just a bit jumpy…" she apologized, not even thinking about how he'd managed to sneak up on her while she was so on edge.

"I don't blame you… where are the others?" Ron asked quietly. He looked around, keeping his head low.

A manhole cover rattled for a moment before it lifted up, Alex poking her head out. "You guys made it!" she exclaimed weakly, the ravenette climbing out to join them. "Where's Clover?" she asked in worry.

"Right here!" shouted the blonde spy, emerging from an abandoned alleyway. The blonde girl exhibited a strange twitch on her face- before it instantly vanished.

'Wait… she was there?' Ron pondered, recalling that he hadn't seen anyone when he'd glanced down from above. Then, there was also that twitch he'd noticed a moment earlier.

"So, what now?" Alex asked, looking over her teammates.

"We have to get back into that lab, before Jerry find's us and turns us into vegetables!" Sam insisted, the very prospect leaving her shivering.

"But, how are we going to break in? You saw the security there…" Alex questioned, glancing around.

"I can get us in…" Clover interjected… in a robotic voice.

'Shit, they've already got Clover!' Ron instantly understood that the blonde girl with them was only there so she could stab them in the back. Should he act now? Wait until they were away from WOOHP? Or, act like he hadn't noticed anything strange and keep an eye on her? If he decided to take her down, what would happen to the REAL Clover?

Before Ron was able to come to a decision, the imposter continued.

"I mean… I think I saw a secret entrance in the forest!" the imposter added.

Ron noticed Sam narrowing her eyes at 'Clover', 'good! At least it's not just me…'

"Okay…?" Sam replied, clearly suspicious. "It's worth a shot…"

"But… how are we going to get back to the island?" Alex asked, a smirk sprouted on Sam's face.

"Leave it to me…" she declared, her gaze firmly upon the very same WOOHP helicopter that Jerry had arrived in.

"Wait!" Ron shouted, stopping the girls in their tracks. "Alex, you and Clover make sure the coast is clear…" he ordered, the two girls in question staring at him before nodding and moving away.

The ex-sidekick grabbed Sam's head, leaning in towards her face.

"Huh? W-w-what are you-" her words cut off completely, as Ron moved his face to hers.

The spies used their stolen WOOHP helicopter to make their way back to the island. Sam was piloting once more, Clover sat in the seat next to her, and Alex was in the back.

Ron actually wasn't with them, as he had another lead he was following up on.

Alex never even had the chance to thank him for saving her, she'd only regained her courage recently. But, that wasn't the only thing that was bothering her at the moment. Alex glared at Sam out of the corner of her eye.

Alex had noticed their mysterious helper pulling her redheaded friend close, while both Clover and herself hadn't been around. It looked like he'd been KISSING her!

'Sam insisted, over and over, that I can't ask him out… all while she was already taking her own chance behind my back!' Alex couldn't help but wonder… was the reason her friend had treated The Actor with so much hostility, because she'd wanted to cover up what was going on between them?

"Alex… stop glaring at me…" Sam growled.

"I'm not glaring…" the ravenette lied, after a short pause.

"You know I can see you, right? You're not being very subtle about it, either" the redheaded pilot added, making a point to meet her friend's eyes.

"Maybe you should have thought about that BEFORE kissing a certain someone…" the ravenette declared.

The plane suddenly rocked up and down a few times, before Sam managed to stabilize it. "W-What are you talking about?!" the redhead shrieked in fury and embarrassment.

"I saw you two! How he pulled you close and kissed you! You didn't even TRY to resist!" Alex hissed, she was more than a little peeved at the moment. "I bet that wasn't even the first time…"

"NO!" Sam denied angrily, her face turning red. "I mean… yes! No, wait, I- can we talk about this later?" The redhead found herself a little lost for words, simply shaking her head.

"Fine… just tell me I'm wrong…" Alex insisted firmly, wanting to be sure.

There was no response from Sam, who simply glanced at both her and Clover.

"Yeah… that's what I thought…" Alex muttered quietly. She was going to have to get some answers… and up her game!

After half an hour or so the three spies returned to the island, this time making their way into the jungle. Clover took the lead, walking towards the entrance she'd mentioned earlier.

Soon after the trio fell through a trap door, one that brought them to a large room- filled with clones of all three spies, who surrounded them completely.

It became clear that the Clover alongside them was an imposter, one who had managed to trick them.

"L-let me go, you phony!" Sam shouted, trying to resist- before she was restrained by a fake Alex.

The real Alex was held in place by the fake Clover that had led them here. "Who- WHAT are you?" the ravenette squealed, still struggling to escape.

"Impressive… aren't they?" asked a sinister voice that echoed in the room.

Both spies glanced over to see a man standing there, his face (and entire body) covered by a dark blue cloak.

"I made them myself…" He pulled back the cloak to reveal a half-human, half mechanical face. From the look of things, more than fifty percent of his body was mechanical. "…nurturing them since they were no more than tiny, little strands of DNA… An incredible likeness, don't you agree?" he mocked, obviously loving the sound of his own voice.

"And to think, Clover was upset when Mandy stole her look… Now that's REALLY stealing her look…" Alex remarked.

Sam couldn't help but stare at the person responsible for all of this, she could have sworn she recognized him… the human part, at least. "Wait a second… you look familiar…"

The madman stared at her, waiting for her memory to supply an answer.

She remembered a man they'd stopped in the past, one who was responsible for tearing out all three spies' hair. He'd fallen, leading to his capture upon getting hurt.

"You're Macker the Safe-cracker! It took my hair a year to grow back after that mission!" Alex recalled angrily. She was still sore about the horrible time she'd had, wearing a hat to school every day.

"And, as you can see, that fall took its toll on me… After I escaped from prison, I created these clones from your hair… Now I will ruin YOUR lives, just like you destroyed MINE…"

The madman walked them through his plan to rob every country's central bank in the world, at the exact same time, and set the girls up to be blamed for Macker's crimes.

"Like you'll actually get away with it!" Sam responded in fury, her hands still restrained by a clone.

The villain smirked, as if he'd been waiting for the redhead to tell him that. "Watch me! To your planes, girls!" he ordered, the small platoon of clones running off. They quickly boarded their rides, before heading off.

There were enough of them to build an ARMY.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm needed at my command center in the Alpines- take them away!" he ordered the remaining clones, before heading off.

The two girls were pushed into a cell block by a few clones. As soon as they arrived, the pair instantly noticed the blonde girl that was waiting there.

"Clover… you're alive!" Alex shouted, rushing over to hug her friend.

"Yeah… me and a hundred cheap, knockoff Clovers! Did you see those things out there?" the blonde spy shot back, already feeling better knowing her friends were safe.

"That's why we have to get out of here and stop Macker!" Sam declared, inspecting the reinforced glass door blocking their exit.

"Well, yeah… but how are we going to get out of here?" Alex asked.

"Maybe I can help with that?" a familiar, male voice interjected. The three spies all swiveled to look at him.

"I was WONDERING where you were…" Clover remarked with a smile, relieved to know that The Actor was also fine.

"Wait… I thought you left to follow a lead?" Alex questioned, glancing at Sam to see if her friend had lied to her.

The redheaded teen cleared her throat, she started to explain.

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

A few hours earlier…

Ron leaned in close to Sam's face, now only a breath away. The redhead's cheeks burned with embarrassment at what he was about to do. She didn't dare run away from him at the moment, not with WHOOP still hot on her trail. Her eyes closed in fear (and something else) …before she heard him speak.

"Sam, listen to me VERY carefully… The Clover with us is a fake, the real one's been taken captive. The phony next to Alex is probably planning on leading us into a trap…" the ex-sidekick explained, giving Sam a few moments to digest the new information.

"We can't harm the fake, not without knowing were the REAL Clover is… Right now, I need you to trust me… and knowingly walk into that trap." Ron knew he was asking for a lot, he just hoped she'd see his point.

"…and what about you?" Sam asked quietly, not angry but worried.

"I'll hide on the helicopter, stay back, until we confirm where Clover is… But, I promise I'll jump in if anything happens to you two… trust me…" Ron swore.

It didn't take long for the redheaded teen to smile at him and nod. "Okay, I trust you…"

Ron barely held back his surprise, keeping it off of his face. He glanced quickly towards Alex and the fake Clover- before he rushed to the helicopter and hid, waiting for the girls to enter.

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

"So, that's what happened?" Alex asked, looking to Ron for confirmation.

"Yep, pretty much… It was a gamble, but it paid off. Sorry for keeping you in the dark, Alex…" Ron apologized.

"Huh? Oh no, that's fine! I would have TOTALLY said something and messed up the plan, it's okay!" the ravenette spy assured him, scratching her head. She was feeling incredibly relieved upon finding out that Sam and The Actor hadn't kissed after all, it had simply been part of the plan.

"Yeah… that's why I couldn't explain anything on the flight here…" Sam added, glaring at Alex (who simply looked embarrassed).

"Okay, now to get you out of there…" Ron muttered to himself, staring intently at the cell.

"I think we're gonna need a key… maybe one of the clones has it?" Alex suggested. But before her friends could respond to her, the spies all noticed the boy moving.

Ron gripped the sides of the cell door before giving it a light tug, it didn't move an inch.

"Look, I know you're a guy and all… but you can't expect to just break us out that-" Clover began to chastise, cutting off upon noticing the doorjamb start to bend under the sheer pressure being exerted. The entire door, frame and all, was ripped clean out of the wall! "…way."

Clover, Sam, and Alex all gaped in disbelief at the absolutely insane feet of shear strength that Ron had just demonstrated- in this case, literally.

"Okay, we're good to go!" Ron declared, moving to the side and waiting for the girls to walk out of the cell… only to notice that they were just standing there, staring at him. "What's the holdup… did we forget something?"

Alex was the first one out, stopping right in front of Ron. "Let's go, they'll catch up to us!" the ravenette shouted, pulling him along.

"Are we not going to talk about the fact that he just-" Clover started to ask, Sam cutting her off.

"Believe me, we will… But, we need to stop Macker first. Answers will come later… I hope…" the redheaded amended.

The pair quickly moved out of the cell, following after their companions. They had to get to the Alpines- and fast.

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

The group of four made their way outside, back to the helicopter they'd arrived in. Fortunately, Macker hadn't seen any reason to waste precious time destroying it.

The team concluded their flight to the Alpines, now scoping out the location. They'd managed to find Macker, the criminal happily ordering his clones to initiate his scheme.

"Okay… so, what's the plan?" the blonde spy asked, watching everything unfold through her binoculars.

"He seems to command them all from that control panel. If we take it out, we might be able to shut his WHOLE operation down!" Sam concluded, staring at her team.

"Right! That means we need a distraction…" Ron chipped in.

"Leave it to us! He has a personal grudge against us, so it'll be easier to draw his attention…" Sam volunteered, Clover agreeing with her friend. The two spies readied their snowboards, before rushing down towards the facility.

Ron took a second to watch the pair… who were currently being shot at. Luckily, the girls were managing to evade everything without trouble- and with plenty of style. He turned to the one remaining spy next to him. "Okay, let's go!"

Both Ron and Alex made their way to the far side of the facility in a hurry, taking advantage of the time Sam and Clover had bought them.

As Alex went down the slope she tripped, sliding across the ground, hitting her head against a metal pipe on the side of the building. "Ouch…" she yelped, getting back up.

Ron intended to warn her about the Alex clone standing guard around the corner… but, to his surprise (and amusement), the clone was buried underneath a large pile of snow that had been dislodged from the roof. 'Her luck is insane…' Ron mused, before approaching the ravenette.

"You okay?" Ron asked.

The girl simply smiled and nodded. "Yep! did you happen to see my killer moves?"

"Oh yeah, definitely…" the blonde boy assured her, smiling broadly, as they both moved on.

The pair discovered a few thick power cables, Alex began cutting through them with a small laser. The whole area started to smoke, their plan seemed to be working.

The madman came rushing around the corner. "What are you doing to my beloved clones?!" he screamed, catching sight of the two saboteurs.

"Alex, leave him to me…" the monkey master growled, moving to stand in front of the man.

"Who are you… another spy?!" Macker accused, swiping at Ron with his metal hand… it was razor-sharp.

"Not exactly" Ron replied truthfully- before he stopped both the man's hands with his own. "Do you even feel pain in those?" the blonde asked, holding the man back.

"Not at all! …but you soon will!" Macker responded with a loud laugh, ready to show off how strong his augmentations were.

"I'm glad…" the blonde ex-sidekick replied, forcing the metal hand away from himself. Ron took a step back, sweeping Macker's metal leg out from under him.

'WHAT?!' the madman shrieked silently. He had no time to react, before his body simply fell to the snow and started slipping away down the mountain- screaming bloody murder as he went.

"Done! There's NO WAY they can launch their attack now!" Alex smiled, happy about the good work she'd done. She shifted her attention back to the villain, who was still sliding away. "Let's go get the girls!" she shouted, both teenagers rushing down the slope.

Upon Ron and Alex's arrival, they spotted a helicopter. It was holding a huge net containing not only the clones who'd been chasing Sam and Clover, but their creator as well. The now-broken man stared at Ron, fear in his eyes.

Suddenly a large snowmobile came rushing down the mountain, coming to a stop in front of the group. An older man stepped out, both the girls and Ron instantly recognizing Jerry. The man quickly fixed his tie… only to be immediately pummeled by multiple snowballs, right in the face.

"Get away from us, Jerry!" Sam shouted in anger, already preparing another improvised projectile.

"Girls, it's okay! We realized you were only trying- wha! -to clear your name!" the older man managed to get out, before he was bombarded by more snowballs.

"I guess we're lucky you figured it out BEFORE giving us lobotomies!" Clover growled angrily.

"I hope you girls can accept my sincerest apology…" Jerry declared, the older man sounding very remorseful.

"Apology!?" the three girls screeched.

"You'll be collecting your pension, by the time you're done making this up to us!" Alex bit out.

They continued to bombard the man with snowballs, no matter what he said, it was their way of beginning to get even.

The older man continued to apologize pathetically, all while they did so.

X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X

A few hours later, back at WOOHP headquarters…

Jerry had just finished going over all the different schematics and gadgets he needed to give the girls back, before their next mission.

Suddenly, a ringing sound came from his computer. After a few seconds, he chose to answer it.

"Yes?"

"You let them go…" a voice from the other side stated, one that was metallic and almost unrecognizable. However, Jerry still knew who it was.

"They committed no crime and were able to clear their name, proving that it was a setup from the start… Isn't that what you wanted, a demonstration?" Jerry asked, his tone calm.

The voice fell silent for a few moments, before finally speaking once more. "You were supposed to make things go smoothly… but instead you got in our way, stopping us from finding them before they got to that point!" the voice declared, sounding angrier than before.

"Did I? All I did was let you run the operation, as you so desperately wanted to… and you messed up completely… I'm guessing that means I was right?" Jerry shot back, concealing a small smirk.

"You helped them… didn't you?" the voice asked.

"I'm not sure why you'd say that… I'm betting you've already seen the tapes of me attempting to apprehend them before they escaped, you've probably even asked your agents to verify it…" the older man defended, placing his papers back down on his desk.

"I KNOW there was someone else there! Someone giving them help! You might think you're being clever and sneaky… but your days are numbered, you old goat!" the voice shouted, now panting in rage.

"You're welcome to go over our all employment records and check them yourself… Now, if you don't mind, I have some actual work to do. Unlike you, I didn't get where I am by simply wailing and crying like an overgrown man-child" Jerry sniped, before hanging up the call. The last thing he heared was someone screaming his name in fury.

"You can come out now…" Jerry stated, now finished fixing the papers on his desk. The second he looked up, he was staring at a masked man inside his office. "I take it you overheard my little call?"

Ron simply nodded in response, he moved closer. "You knew I was here…"

"No, I didn't… But I DID have a feeling you wanted to talk to me… I see I was right…" Jerry took a moment to stare at 'the Actor', as he'd dubbed him.

"I did… I wanted to ask what kind of man would be willing to lobotomize his agents because of something they did, to know why he didn't look close enough to find the real culprit… Or, at the very least, lock them up first" Ron explained. "But, then it got me thinking… If you were really serious about it, why not track the girls using their gadgets? Or, even the helicopter we used? Why did it take you SO LONG to find them? …and then it hit me, you were doing your best to give them more time…" Ron concluded. He'd obviously hit the nail on the head, Jerry nodding slowly in response.

"I had no choice…" the older man swore. "The second I was informed of the situation, control was already taken away from me… They decided to go ahead with their plan… even without any hard evidence…"

"Guilty, until proven innocent…" Ron accused.

"More like guilty as long as 'they' felt like it…" Jerry corrected. "But, I had a feeling that the girls would be able to prove their innocence… and that you'd somehow be there to help them." The older man smiled.

"I COULD have ignored them… avoided getting myself involved in this whole mess" the blonde teen replied, glancing away.

"You wouldn't… I think I already had you figured out from our very first talk… You're not some kind of thief, or evil mastermind, you just want to help out and are worried about the girls…" Jerry continued, his tone light and honest.

Ron simply remained silent as he refused to meet Jerry's eyes, somewhat embraced.

"I'm not sure where you acquired your various skills and knowledge, but I'm glad you're on the girl's side… Ron Stoppable…" Jerry declared.

The blonde ex-sidekick simply smiled… then removed his mask. "I'm surprised you figured it out… what gave me away?" Ron asked, clearly interested.

"An error on your part, really… There was no way I was able to find out who you are, but when you went into the bank to get the sample… you went in without your mask. From there, it was easy to get the footage and delete it…" Jerry explained.

'Delete it?' Ron pondered. "You're not going to arrest me?" …or, at the very least, try? he didn't add.

"Why would I do anything to someone who is not an enemy of WOOHP? That would just be silly…"

"So… now what? Now that you know who I am… will you tell the girls?" the blonde teen questioned.

"No, but I wanted to ask you something first" the older man explained. "Do you still plan on helping us? …the girls?"

Ron didn't even need to think before he nodded, "I will…" He wasn't going to abandon them, to whatever it was going on in the shadows.

And that's another chapter done!
