Chapter 15: Time Off
Several days had passed since the spies' last mission, the kidnapped athletes having returned to their normal lives. Reggie had taken credit for not only beating the show single-handedly, but also freeing his fellow prisoners.
It had taken a bit of 'persuading', as well as careful editing of the drone's footage, to make such a story believable. Fortunately for the spies (and their secret identities), Jerry had managed to pull through- like he always did. However, there was one last thing he needed to do.
Ron didn't mind one bit, he'd always honestly preferred to be out of the limelight. Now that the blonde had become some sort of secret agent, his natural inclinations had only been reinforced. Ron's understanding was that the only remaining undoctored footage was Jerry's, and that it would never be seen by anyone other than himself. It was a record intended solely for emergencies… and his eyes alone.
The young blonde teen had returned to Beverly Hills, having already slipped back into his new life. Hanging out with Mandy, finishing up their schoolwork, had been a real joy. It really showed just how different an experience this was from his old school.
The people here had just been so nice. It was probably due to the fact that (strangely enough) there did not seem to be any bullies at his school- or, was it that Ron simply hadn't spotted them yet? The blonde teen was usually a prime target for bullies, consistently on the receiving end of their low-grade harassment. Having been freed from all that was a welcome change of pace, allowing Ron to enjoy his peaceful schooldays.
He was currently walking out of his most recent class, bound for his next. Mandy wasn't with him at the moment, she'd had some stuff to do with her two female friends. Ron didn't mind, obviously… Kim had often had things she needed to talk with Monique about, this wasn't anything new to him.
However, at least one thing HAD changed since his last mission…
"Hey, Ron!" greeted a voice behind him.
The blonde teen turned to face the redheaded teen he'd met less than a week ago. "Hey Donna, you already finished with your class?" Ron asked, the simple question having been the first thing that popped into his head.
"Obviously…" she scoffed, glancing away. She strode forward, intending to walk next to him.
It had come as a bit of a surprise to Ron, the first time Donna had spoken to him a few days ago. Strangely enough, she'd asked for his schedule (of all things). At the time Ron had assumed it was simply idle curiosity on her part… only to find out later that she was now in several of his classes.
'Well… she did come back to school after some time away, maybe Donna just wanted an idea of what classes to take?' Ron had guessed initially- except that she always seemed to be around every time he had a moment outside of a classroom.
That hadn't been nearly as big a problem as Ron had expected, Donna had been pretty normal (all things considered). She seemed to be partial to talking to him whenever she could. However, that inclination didn't seem to be acceptable for anyone else…
Donna seemed to become annoyed, as soon as anyone else tried to talk to him. It had been especially noticeable when Mandy had started discussing some new movie she wanted to see. Ron wasn't sure if the noirette intended to check it out with him, or had just wanted to let the blonde know she was planning on going with her two female friends.
Donna had just finished telling Ron about some annoying girl who'd kicked a ball at her while she'd been doing her nails… and hadn't even had the courtesy to apologize afterwards.
"Where was that? Like… after school, or were you in a public place?" the blonde boy questioned, that DID sound really rude. An accident, sure… But, at the very least, you could apologize for it.
"At school… while we were playing soccer…" the redhead responded simply, failing to notice the flat look Ron was shooting her.
"You mean in gym class?" She nodded once. "When you were supposed to be playing with the rest of the class?"
"Well, no… I was staying off to the side, just relaxing, when the soccer ball hit me!" the girl exclaimed, becoming angry again just recalling the event.
'Should I tell Donna it's pretty much her fault?' Ron contemplated silently, before shaking his thoughts aside. While explaining to Donna that she was the one responsible for her own misfortune would be the right thing to do, the biker did seem a LOT less antagonistic than when Ron had first met her. The last thing he wanted to do was to sour her disposition again.
"I see… Well, it's a good thing you're such a forgiving person! It takes a lot of personal strength, to let something like this slide…" the male spy declared, smiling innocently. Complements were always a good tool to diffuse any tension, right?
The redheaded teen glanced away, mumbling something under her breath, before walking a bit closer to him. Ron was glad to see that the things he'd learned from interacting with Kim were still paying off, even if she wasn't around him anymore.
The young Stoppable had successfully confirmed that redheads were far more understanding if you gave them some compliments, now if only that would work on SAM-
"Oh, there you are!" shouted a familiar voice.
Ron instantly noticed his new best friend Mandy jogging towards him, a small smile upon her face- until the noirette spotted something that made her grin die a horrible death.
"Hey Mandy, are you already done with Caitlin and Dominique?" the blonde spy asked… but failed to receive any answer from the girl.
"Ron, I don't believe I've had a chance to meet your new friend… care to introduce me?" Mandy asked critically, outright glaring at said girl.
For some reason, just now she sounded a LOT like Kim had when she'd first met Yori… was this something girls just did? It certainly seemed like it. "Oh, right! Mandy, this is Donna…" Ron turned his head, doing the same for the redheaded girl. "She's not really new, but…" Ron trailed off, trying to find the right words. Said girl moved from his side, standing in front of the ravenette teen.
"Ron means I just got back… after being suspended. I got into too many fights, hurt a LOT of annoying girls… I bet you know the type…" Donna interjected, her voice quiet and her tone dangerous.
Mandy refused to back down, actually moving closer to the redhead. "Oh, I believe I DO… They let someone like you back here, after everything you did? I may just have to look into it, see who is to blame for that decision… maybe even make sure they correct their little error…" Mandy replied, her tone containing just about the same amount of malice as Donna's had.
Ron could only stare at the scene before him, raising an eyebrow at the pair. "Do you two know each other?" he asked, it certainly seemed like it. It was absolutely uncanny, just how much they reminded him of Bonnie and Kim right now.
"No…" they declared at the same time, both refusing to break eye contact with one another.
'Right… I totally believe that…' the blonde male spy couldn't help but moan silently. Too bad he couldn't outright say anything, that might set off the explosive tension between the pair.
Suddenly an odd ringing emanated from the blonde's pocket, quickly stealing Ron's attention… It was a very familiar ring, one that instantly conveyed exactly who was calling him. "Sorry, I gotta take this! I'll talk to you two later, okay?" Ron apologized, pulling out the phone and walking a few paces away before answering it.
…
"Great… look what you did…" the redheaded girl growled in annoyance.
"What 'I' did? He had an important call! Not that some hooligan like YOU would understand… If anything, he was walking away from YOU!" Mandy screeched back.

Ron had successfully managed to break away from the two girls thanks to the call, saving himself from their bickering. Unsurprisingly, he was being contacted by Jerry (Ron recognized both the number and ringtone). The older man didn't want to send him on a mission this time, he'd simply wanted to talk to him.
"Jerr-Jerr! What's going on?!" the blonde ex-sidekick enthused, a big smirk on his face.
"I think that, at this point, I'd actually PREFER it if you went back to calling me "uncle" …" the older man confessed with a tired groan.
"I'll think about it… So, what's up? Do you need anything?" Ron asked a bit more seriously. Despite the blonde's irreverent attitude, he had enough experience to avoid saying anything that might tip anyone off (in the event someone was eavesdropping).
"Yes and no…" the older man replied after a shot pause.
"Okay… At that means what, exactly?"
"I wanted to ask if you could come over here and spar with one of our operatives…" Jerry explained. "She wanted to spar against one of our most experienced agents… and that just so happens to be you, at the moment…" the older man elaborated, mumbling something Ron didn't quite catch at the end.
"At the moment?" The qualifier sounded odd to him, Jerry moved quickly to shift the topic of conversation.
"I do have other agents, you know… Maybe, at some point, you will meet them and see for yourself. So… what do you say?" he reiterated.
'Sparring?' Ron mused, it had been quite some time since he'd sparred with someone. Honestly, the only time he'd really done so was with was Yori (during his time at Yamanochi). Having another go at it? That could be interesting… maybe even fun!
"You can refuse, you know… It's not an order, or anything" the boss of WHOOP assured Ron. His newest operative seemed to be considering the request.
"You know… I think I will do it… might even be fun!" the blonde teen exclaimed, it could prove to be a nice change of pace from all his recent missions.
"You will? Fantastic!" The older man started to type on his keyboard. "Just give me a second to beam you in…"
"What?! What do you mean-" Ron's body was suddenly sucked into a huge tube that dropped from the ceiling, retreating as quickly as it had come. The blonde slid down the pipe for a few seconds, the route twisting and turning before arriving at Jerry's office.
Ron made sure to land on his feet (and not his ass, like the girls had several times), before he straightened up into a standing position. He glared at his 'boss'. "Not even waiting for me to change, or get ready?"
"I'll take it under consideration for next time…" Jerry shot back with a smirk, starting to walk away. "Now, follow me, I'll show you to our training room…"
…
After a few minutes of walking through the massive facility, Ron still found himself amazed at size of it. The blonde teen wasn't even sure they were underground anymore… it just seemed to spread as far as the eye could see. He really needed to ask for a map, one of these days. The pair finally arrived at a cramped room. It had a few exercise machines lying about, as well as a few punching bags and benches. Finally, there was a fairly large, empty area with a few large mats occupying it. All in all, it looked like a normal (if small) empty gym.
"Well… seem like a VERY popular place…" Ron couldn't help but joke. He quickly glanced around, still seeing no one.
"Yes, well… It used to be rather in demand a few years back… but eventually our agents chose a more open area for their workouts. My guess is that you're inclined to agree, but it should be sufficient for your spar…" the older man assured him, then pointed to a door at the far end of the room. "You can change there, your sparring partner will arrive shortly…" The older man turned around, starting to walk away. "Oh, and before I forget… There are no cameras here, or in the changing room, so you can relax." His final words spoken, the older man left the area.
"Okay?" Ron mumbled to himself, before simply shrugging and moving to the changing room for a quick swap of clothes. He had already swapped his hairstyle and color while he'd been riding in the tube earlier, on his way to Jerry's office. It wasn't like it was very hard for him to do, plus it avoided the off chance someone would recognize him.
After he was finished getting dressed, Ron moved out of the room and back to the training area. Finding it still completely empty, he shrugged and approached one of the punching bags.
Ron had never really trained with one in the past, but he might as well give it a try to pass the time. He fell into a basic boxing stance, punching the bag over and over. The loud sounds echoed in the room for a few minutes, Ron practicing a simple combo that ended with a mean left hook.
The punching bag flew off in response to his last jab, ripping at the top and slamming against the far wall. "Oops…" Ron declared sheepishly, staring at his unintentional handiwork.
"I already knew you were strong, but this is a bit much…" remarked a familiar voice from behind him.
Ron turned around to spot practically the last person he expected to see. "Sam? What are YOU doing here?" he asked, clearly confused.
"What does it look like?" she shot back.
The male spy took a look at the redheaded girl, Sam was wearing a tight green shirt and a pair of black yoga pants. The girl stared at him with her arms crossed.
"You're here for a workout?" Ron offered.
"In a manner of speaking…" The girl glanced away for a second, before meeting his eyes again. "I asked Jerry if he could call you over…"
…
A few hours earlier…
'So, that's what happened…' Sam had gotten a brief explanation of what had transpired from her two friends after their mission. She wasn't AT ALL pleased by how easily she'd been captured and controlled. Today she hadn't just been out of commission, or (even worse) in need of rescue. THIS TIME she had ATTACKED her OWN TEAM, lashing out at them with real intent.
That worried her… a lot!
"You want to do… what?" Jerry asked the redheaded teen standing before him.
"I want to talk to 'him'…" Sam repeated seriously, staring intently at her boss.
"Yes, I heard you the first time… But, may I ask, why?" the older spy inquired. He desperately hoped that there wasn't any friction between his girls and their newest team member.
"I want to FIGHT him!" the female spy exclaimed.
…
"You want to… fight him?" Jerry parroted. That answer did absolutely nothing to sooth his worries… was there still bad blood between the two of them?
"Woah, nothing like that… I just want to SPAR with him…" the girl elaborated.
…
"So, you're the one that wanted to spar?" Ron questioned, more than a little surprised.
"Yeah… you don't have an issue with it, I hope?" The redheaded spy couldn't help but predict his refusal… she couldn't really blame him if he did. Sam had been rude to, and untrusting of, him since they'd first met (even if she had her reasons).
It wasn't really all her fault, he'd seemed really shifty in the beginning. I mean, he HAD knocked her out… and captured all three of them for the villain at the time! Alex might call her unfair, or mean, but Sam felt she had a pretty good reason not to trust him.
"Not really, I guess it's fine…" The boy simply shrugged the question off, like it was no big deal.
"W-Wha- you're okay with this?" the girl asked, honestly surprised by his response.
"Sure, it might even be fun! My last spar was so long ago-" Ron stopped himself, shaking his head with a smirk. "Anyways, it's fine… If you're still up for it, that is…"
Sam simply grinned and nodded, her confidence returning. "I am!" She was about to show him what she was made of.
…
"I think that's enough for now…" Ron declared, cooling down from the light workout he'd just had with Sam, he looked down at the girl.
Sam was breathing pretty heavily, leaning against the wall next to where they had been training. They'd started out with a basic offensive spar, the redheaded focusing on trying to hit the disguised blonde. Despite being restricted to pure defense, Sam had discovered just how illusive Ron could be.
Frustration had hit her hard, after several minutes filled with fruitless attempts. Sam had tripped, falling to the floor- or she would have, if he'd have let her! As soon as she'd stumbled, his hand had shot out. Ron grabbed her before Sam's brain had even realize her misstep, helping her back up into a standing position.
After that, she'd insisted that HE would be the one attacking HER this time… That scenario had proven to be just as difficult, if not more so, than the previous one. His hits were heavy- if a bit muted, compared to how strong she suspected he was.
Her arms and legs were sore, fortunately Ron had asked for a break from their so-called training so he could catch his breath. Sam knew the pause was really for her, more than him. She would have been a lot more annoyed… if her body wasn't just so exhausted right now!
"Y-Yeah… good idea…" Sam stammered between gulps of air, she limply slumped against the wall.
There was a brief moment of silence, Ron closely inspecting his sparring partner. The redheaded teen looked a bit worse for wear, even closing her tired eyes for a moment. Her face, and the rest of her exposed skin, had a slick shine to it. Her top and bottom looked a shade darker than they had originally, obviously from all the sweat they'd absorbed. Her whole body heaved with each breath she took, the motion almost hypnotic.
-and she was now staring at him…
Ron instantly glanced to the side, as soon as he met her eyes, but the damage was already done.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I was just… Are we… cool? I mean, after the mission and all…"
Sam simply stared at him for a few seconds, a small smile appeared on her face. "You're still thinking about that?" she asked, but didn't wait for him to answer before continuing. "Yes, we- I'm cool… if you can believe it… I'm still going to be working out here, so I can give you a proper spar next time…" the redheaded vowed, conviction in her tone.
"You gave me one already…" The disguised blonde couldn't meet Sam's eyes, feeling a bit awkward in a way that was almost foreign to him. It didn't help that she reminded him so much of Kim.
Sam scoffed. "Please, I know just how strong you are… Or did you expect any of us to forget, when you simply ripped the prison bars out?" She glanced at Ron, taking a small amount of pride when he looked suitably sheepish.
"That's not… it's different…" he argued weakly, his words trailing off, afraid of the touchy subject.
"Is it?" Her head tilted to the side. "Where did you train?"
"That's not something I can tell you…" Ron's quickly insisted. After all, he had promised Sensei.
"You're even acting all mysterious about that? Trying an angle with me too?" she prodded. First there was how comfortable Clover seemed to act around him, as opposed to every other guy. Then there was his whole deal with Alex, the noirette seemingly pining after him for some reason.
"Angle?" Ron was more than a little confused, and it clearly showed on his face. "Weren't YOU the one who wanted to train in the first place?"
Sam simply stared at him for a few seconds. Her face broke into a small smile, before she started giggling softly. The sheer innocent confusion on Ron's face, his tone, all his previous interactions with Alex, as well as his reaction to Tuesday Tate's words. Everything suggested that he REALLY wasn't the kind of guy to try his luck with girls. Or, maybe that he'd never had any luck with them to begin with.
He also seemed a bit too innocent to be lying to her. Was he honestly this clueless, or was it something else? "Sorry, just something Clover's been nagging me about…" Sam teased, smiling as she watched understanding dawn upon him.
"Ah… I see, I totally understand…" he assured her, nodding. "But, don't tell her I said that okay?" His soft plea made her grin.
"Why do I find It odd that you're more worried about Clover than Alex?"
Her words seemed to earn a confused look from him. "Why would I be worried about Alex? She's nice and we work well together…"
'Really now? What about all the times where she was all over you, or desperately trying to get your number?' the redheaded spy mused silently, staring up at him. "What about me… any worries there?"
"I don't know…" Ron glanced at her, one eyebrow raised. "Are you going to try and attack me again?"
"No… I think I'm good. Sorry about that, by-" Sam began, Ron cutting her off.
"Don't… you're not to blame for that" the blonde declared, noticing she was about to argue. "I'm sure I've never told you before, but I was also controlled like that not too long ago…" He'd definitely grabbed her attention.
"Really… YOU? How did it happen?" Sam asked.
The young Stoppable considered telling her about the first time he'd gone out with Mandy, when that show had controlled him for a time. But, in the end, Ron decided against it. The girls were extremely perceptive, and Sam most of all. The last thing he needed was to say something silly and give himself away, like he had with Clover.
"Just me being in the wrong place at the wrong time…" Ron winked at the girl, before moving from his spot. "Now… I don't know about you, but I think I need a shower before heading home." He moved away to the shower area, leaving the female spy alone.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Sam rested just a bit more, then finished collecting herself. Her little 'spar' with their new teammate finished, Ron had already gone home. Sam was still feeling a bit sore in places, but (for once) she didn't really mind. More importantly, she'd actually warmed up to him. Her feelings about Ron had definitely changed for the better, thanks in large part to the short time spent together and the conversation they'd shared. It could have been because she'd been able to vent a bit of her remining frustration, or possibly Sam had just decided to cut her losses.
The redheaded spy could definitely tell how highly skilled he was- and how much he'd been holding back on her account. It was obvious, considering Sam knew he could bend metal with his bare hands… But that didn't mean she couldn't beat him, as long as she kept at it!
A big, satisfied smile appeared on her face. She leaned against the wall next to her, Sam reflecting how the day had gone. The redheaded teen had definitely had a lot of fun, despite her loss to their newest member. But, more importantly, she had a new goal in mind.
Now, all she had to do was get up and get herself ready.
…
'Maybe a few minutes more…'
