The stench of death hung heavy in my nose, choking, suffocating. I couldn't breath, couldn't think. I wanted to scream at the horrors that flooded my senses. Bodies mangled, torn flesh strewn before my eyes. Claws scratched concrete and metal, strange creatures growled, surrounding me, I wanted to fight, to scream, to curl up and die. I wanted to be anywhere but where I was. Hell had come for me and I lay curled in the fetal position awaiting it. I awoke in a cold sweat, shaking with fear. I wiped my brow and stared at the ceiling. I was your typical twenty-three year old college student. I played video games, many of them Survival horror games. I had had dreams relating to the games before but that was the first time that it had felt so real. My friends and I had been planning a trip that was scheduled for a two days from that day. We had gotten everything set, packed and saved up money, but we waited to decide where to go, choosing to make a spur of the moment decision. The day before we had chosen our destination, my friend Taki had found the real life Silent Hill, and we all agreed we wanted to check it out.
Taki was the leader of the group, not for any lack of ability from the rest of us, but took the take-charge approach to things. She was about 5'5" with an average build. None of us were very athletic. Kame was the Shortest of the group at about 5'3", skinny but not overly so. Both were and long a brown hair, Taki's going down to about her shoulders, while Kame's went down a little farther. Finally the day of the trip had come. We packed up my Chevy Cobalt and hit the road. It was a twelve-hour drive from our hometown to Silent Hill and we had a lot of road ahead of us. We chatted for most of the trip, talking about anime or video games, or whatever sparked our interest. It didn't matter how random the topic seemed if we started discussing it we would continue till we lost interest.
About a third of the way there we made out first rest stop and switched places. I moved to the back so I could stretch out and relax while Taki drove. Kame moved into the passenger seat and we continued on.
After our next stop I switched back to driving and our conversation drifted toward the topic of Silent Hill. We wondered if there was any truth behind the video games stories. We knew all small towns had their ghost stories, but Silent Hill was the only one we knew of that had its own video game. We passed a sign that read "10 miles to Silent Hill." and the strangest thing happened. It was faint at first but we all could have sworn it was snowing. An odd occurrence as it was the middle of July. Our suspicion was soon justified as the snow picked up and in less than a minute we were driving through near whiteout conditions. I had no problem keeping the car on the road, as where we come from it known for snow, though not in the summer like this. The biggest problem I had was seeing where we were going. I only had a clear view of an area a few feet in front of the car. The snow covered the ground about a foot deep as I looked to the right seeing a sign that read "Welcome to Silent Hill!" Just as I read the sign both Kame and Taki Screamed, "LOOK OUT!" I turned my head seeing a young girl just in front of me. I barely had time to swerve to the right just missing her and crashing into the guardrail with a loud bang.
I opened my eyes to a clear sunny day and saw a sign going by that read, "10 miles to Silent Hill."
