My name is Damion Rose. I'm the youngest huntsman in years and my cousin and little sister are currently going to Beacon, the school I went to. The weird part is that my cousin is the same age as me and I'm going to be helping out, or that was the plan at least.
"You want me to do what?" I asked.
"I want you to be a full teacher," Ozpin said, sitting at his desk.
"Alright, why?"
"Well, a spot has been opened and I think you are a perfect fit for it."
"What spot?"
"You would be teaching Combat Tactics and Creatures of Myth. I also want you to be a teacher for any faunus or hybrid students to go to and confide in. I know you weren't born either and so you had a few years of normality before your life went crazy but you can assist them in ways that human teachers can't because you went through this when you were seven," Ozpin explained.
"Fine, but aren't you a week into classes already?"
"I've been looking for a teacher but couldn't find one. You are quite literally my last chance to choose before the council chooses for me," Ozpin said, taking a sip of his coffee.
"Alright, but only because I owe you," I said.
"Perfect, you will be getting an office that has a sparing area and if a student asks for personal training you can use it or to keep yourself in shape. You can teach your class as you feel necessary but I do have a few notes from the previous teacher you can use. I think they started with hybrids," Ozpin said.
"Alright, when's the first class?"
"Tomorrow."
"Alright, could you watch it? I'm going to show them as it would be better for them than to listen and just decide if I'm telling the truth," I said.
"Agreed, I will be there, you will be in the combat classroom."
The Next Day
"Alright, first class," I said, standing at the door. All the students were in the amphitheater already so I just walked in and started talking. "Hello everyone. I'm Damion Rose, however just call me Damion as I'm your age. This class is Creatures of Myth so we will be covering many diverse and strange things. While it might not seem all that important this is one of the most important classes you will have. Any questions yet?" I asked, seeing Yang and Ruby's mouths open in shock.
"Um, how are you able to teach us?" a girl with long white hair asked.
"Well Weiss, I'm the youngest huntsman in a century and I have knowledge about somethings that most people believe are legends and that actually brings me to our first lesson. Who here knows what a hybrid is?"
"You mean a filthy faunus like you?" a boy with brown hair asked.
"That's two weeks of detention for your team Cardin," I said. "And no, anyone else have an intelligent guess?" I asked.
"Um, aren't they beings who are half person half grimm?" a rabbit faunus asked.
"Correct Velvet, now who knows why I'm telling you this?" I asked.
"To waste our time. Why don't you teach us something useful?" Weiss asked.
"This is useful, if you want to see why then come down here," I said. "You were all told to have your weapons so be prepared to fight at any time," I added, as she walked down. "Now, I'll give you a small advantage by telling you my semblance. I can create portals on the ground using black rose petals. I can also burst into a bunch of petals and teleport out of any portal. Now, come at me," I said, putting my arms out to the side.
Weiss charged me and I fell into a portal and emerged behind her. She then turned expecting me to do that and stabbed me many times. I then summoned my tendrils and grabbed her weapon with one and locked her arms and legs together with two more.
"W-what? I thought you said your semblance was rose portals," Weiss said.
"I did tell you that and I told you the truth. The thing is I am a hybrid. My tendrils are part of my grimm form. After years of training I can do a partial transformation like this," I said, dropping her weapon and releasing her. "Get up to the stands and I'll explain it more in depth." I watched as she recovered her weapon and quickly made her way to the rest of the team. "So, hybrids are created in one of two ways. You are either born one or one makes you a hybrid. This is by a hybrid giving a person a blood transfusion, this is also what happened to me when I was five. Hybrids don't gain any power until they are ten normally. Because of me being made one when I was five I automatically got the ability to transform, however I had no control. If I felt any negative emotion it would immediately activate. Normally they spend years in an abandoned place in the woods to control their powers. I was especially trained by Ozpin himself in order to control my new powers. Now, I will do a full transformation and there is a slight possibility that I might lose control so you will only see this once. There are two people among you who I know have the proper equipment to take down a raging hybrid so if it isn't you don't even try as you will die," I said, removing my cloak and weapon and setting them aside. I then started to transform.
My bones cracked as black grimm ooze seeped out and covered my body until I was similar to a quadrupedal thin but large wolf like grimm. I walked around and quickly jumped against the wall to show how much more powerful I am now as compared to normal. I then saw Ruby look at me with a concerned look and so I jumped up to the stands causing everyone to flinch and put a hand on their weapons. I walked up to Ruby and licked her cheek before jumping down and quickly changed back laughing at everyone's reaction.
"Sorry, I couldn't help but have a little bit of fun with my sister," I said. "If I would have lost control it would have been when I first transformed so if you ever come across a hybrid watch them when they first transform to see if they will be in control or not. That's all I have for you today, dismissed," I said, walking out.
"Damion!" Ruby whined, running after me.
"Yes?"
"Why didn't you tell me that you were a teacher?" she asked.
"Because, I was only supposed to help and I thought it would be funny. Still, Weiss Schnee on your team. I kinda feel bad about that, also your partner," I said.
"Eh, it could be worse. I just wish she would stop treating me like a child," Ruby complained.
"You'll live," I said, giving her a small hug.
"What is a teacher doing touching my innocent little sister?" Yang asked, acting like she just saw the most inappropriate scene ever.
"I'm just hugging my favorite sibling," Ruby said.
"Ha, I win," I said.
"Screw you," Yang said, punching my shoulder.
"Yang! You can't just hit a teacher!" Weiss scolded, walking out.
"It's alright, she's my cousin so I'm used to her brute strength," I said.
"Wait, so if you're her cousin then Ruby is," Weiss started.
"My sister, yes," I said, watching her eyes go wide trying to figure out how.
"Don't think too hard about it," Ruby said.
"What trouble is my team getting in?" a girl with long black hair and a bow asked, walking up to us. I could tell she was a faunus by how she smelled and the bow looked like cat ears.
"Nothing much, I'm guessing you're the last member of team RWBY, Blake right?" I asked, remembering what I was told of Ruby's team.
"Yeah, nice to meet you," the secret faunus said.
"Well, I must be going. I have a class for leaders I have to get ready for. See you then sis," I said, walking away.
I went to my office and got everything prepared for my Combat Tactics class and when I had thirty minutes till class I headed to the classroom Ozpin said I would be using and walked in to find Weiss sitting on one side while Ruby was on the other. I went up to Weiss and looked at her.
"Yes?" she asked.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I'm here for class," she said, in a matter of fact tone.
"This class is for leaders. You are not a leader so you can't take this class," I said.
"I'm going to be going to Ozpin so I know what I have to do so I can take my proper place as leader of team RWBY so I will be taking Ruby's place in this class and I would rather not be forced to catch up," Weiss said.
"Alright, I'm going to explain a few things to you and then you are going to leave my class. First off you can't change the leader of a team unless the previous leader dies or goes missing so unless you are going to kill my sister or get her killed then you can't become leader. Secondly, Ozpin knows more about anything than anyone else so if he says Ruby is the leader it's a fact and not something you should try to change. There is also the fact that this isn't like Atlas, your proper place is Ruby's partner and supporting her not trying to take her place and make her feel unwanted. If you don't change your outlook on this matter and keep acting like an entitled little piece of crap I will make sure you are expelled from Beacon and never be allowed in any huntsman school ever. Now get out of my classroom now," I said, glaring at her not hiding the fact that I'm pissed at her attitude.
She quickly picked her stuff out and stomped out. I then sat at the desk and waited for the leaders to slowly filter in. Once it was time I explained what this class was and who I was to those who weren't in my last class. I then told them what I wanted them to do for homework and then left. I went to the teacher's gym and hung a punching bag and just started going to town. I was still punching it late into the night when Goodwitch walked in.
"Damion, what are you doing?" she asked.
"Trying to prevent a loss of control," I said. "Weiss Schnee is an issue with her attitude and it needs to be fixed. She said she was going to ask Ozpin how to become leader so I explained and it didn't bother her about the fact that Ruby would have to die before she can even be considered for leader and knowing her father I wouldn't put it past her to do it," I said.
"We will prevent this from happening," Goodwitch said.
"I know, but she needs a serious attitude adjustment. If she isn't reminded of her place she will overstep her boundaries and it could be deadly for everyone around her," I said. "I might need you to watch my class tomorrow. I don't know how they will take the lesson I'm going to teach them and you might need to be there."
"Alright, I don't have any plans for that time so I will be in the back," she said.
"Thanks. Well, I'll see you then," I said, grabbing my towel and walking out.
The next day I woke up and just went straight to the classroom and waited. When it came time for my class I went down to the center and meditated as students walked in. After they were all here I opened my eyes and stood up.
"Look around at the people around you," I said. "One of the people in this room will die before graduation. In ten years a quarter of you will either be dead or seriously injured. My team is a good example of this. Team DRKNS was a five member team I was tossed on here at the age of seven because of my condition. We were the top of our year and no one could beat us, but that wasn't enough to keep us alive. Our second year we were on a mission and something went wrong. Two Grimm of Legend, Ukatoa the Leviathan and Jormungandr the Great Serpent. Kat, our leader, told us to run and said she was right behind us. So we listened, by the time we got far enough away we turned to see her missing. It turns out she was caught and killed before we even got a mile away."
I looked out at the crowd and saw Goodwitch looking at me with a grimacing look.
"Now this is what happened," I said, continuing. "Her partner, Natasha, became our leader and the thing is that her family gave me her weapon because she always said that I was like the brother she never had and said that she would want me to have it. Natasha was also killed but not until two years after we graduated. Silver was another member and two years after we graduated he had a wife and son. A year and a half after his son was born he was killed in the line of duty. Ren was injured very grievously and couldn't be a huntsman anymore. He is now in a mental institution because he kept trying to go out and kill anything because of it. My own mother was killed when she was on a mission with my aunt who has stopped doing missions because she blames herself. This is the reality of this line of work so you might want to double think about your career path. You are all dismissed."
I watched as most of them slowly got up and left. A couple of students stayed behind and one of which was Weiss. She got up and walked down to me.
"I-I'm sorry for what happened to you and for insinuating that I would do something like killing your sister. I want you to know that I am not my father and won't do what he would be willing to do," she said.
"If you aren't him then prove it with your actions and not just your words," I said, going up and taking Velvet of team CFVY who I have worked with before to my office where she sat down and cried and hugged me apologizing for what I had to go through.
Later that day I had Blake come to my office for a talk.
"Um, hello," Blake said, walking in.
"Perfect, you're here. We need to talk, specifically about your ears. Yes I can tell you are a faunus and no I won't tell anyone," I said, reading the questions from her face.
"What do you want to talk about?"
"Why are you hiding them, and does Ghira know you're here?" I asked, remembering my conversations with her father.
"You know my father?" she asked.
"Yes, we were on a mission to Menagerie when Kat was killed. I met your father and have since then kept in contact and have done many things in Menagerie. You know your mother and father miss you right?"
"So, I left and I shouldn't be allowed to go back. And why I'm wearing a bow is my business," she said.
"What about that issue with your past with the White Fang?" I asked. "Yes, I know you were Adam's second in command. I also know you left. You probably remember me from fighting against him on many occasions. I won't hold it against you, but I do want you to do something. Tell one person on your team about your ears. I don't care who or how, but just tell one of them before the end of the semester. That is all I wanted to talk to you about. You can go but think about what I said," I said.
Ruby-
"She lied to us," I said, sitting in my brother's office.
"I know, I know everything. You remember when I was fighting the Fang?" Damion asked, getting a nod in response from me. "Well, she was next to the leader and I called her out when I realized that. She said she wasn't with them and so I trust her and you should too. You're her leader, you need to trust her."
"I do, especially because she told me about her being a faunus a few days before, it's just, you know I'm gay right?" I asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"Well, I've had a crush on her for a while now. I don't know if she can feel the same about me," I said.
"Ruby, if you like her, go talk to her," Damion said.
"R-really?"
"Yeah, go, do it now," Damion said. "If you want it, go ask her."
"Alright," I said. I then quickly went around the school looking for her. I then found her but what I saw broke my heart. I saw her kissing my sister Yang.
I walked back to my room and laid in my bed. I went about my day only I could feel the lost pep in my step. I went about my life as I would but my smile would never be the same. I told Damion what I saw and he said that it might not have meant to be. The next semester a bunch of foriegn students were arrested along with the leader of the White Fang in Vale. I went to my classes and for the next four years spent my time hanging out with anyone but my team. Team CFVY, JNPR, and even Damion. Eventually we graduated and agreed to get a house as a team but couldn't afford it. Damion said he had a place that he would help pay for as long as we let him live in the shed. We agreed and moved into the two bedroom house, but things were what I thought they were going to be. The rest of the team revealed that they were in a three way relationship. The three of them lived in the master bedroom and I stayed in the second bedroom away from theirs.
Eventually I stopped going on missions with them. I started just taking solos, be it killing a pack of beowolves or tracking a person of interest for the police. Then I started taking missions where I worked with the Atlesian military. I would join Specialist Winter Schnee on escort missions and we became friends from working together often. Then after a few attacks on Schnee manor Weiss was forced to go back, and with her went her wonderful girlfriends. She also had Damion and I go with them as a way to try to keep me in their lives as she has tried to convince me to go on some missions with them. We got to the Schnee manor and Yang and Weiss cornered me.
"Ruby, you are our leader, we need you on missions," Weiss said.
"Really? You need me?" I asked. "I think the three of you are just fine without me. I'm going on a long mission with the military."
"Ruby, why won't you talk to us?" Yang asked.
"Because, it's obvious that I'm just an extra person you don't need. I bet the only reason Weiss invited me to come with was to rub it in my face," I said.
"Rub what in your face?" Yang asked.
"That the two of you get to screw the only girl I've ever loved!" I yelled.
"What do you mean?" Yang asked.
"I'm leaving," I said, walking out. I went to the academy where I knew I was to get my mission.
"Miss Rose, what are you doing here? Our joint mission won't start until tomorrow," Winter said.
"Can I stay with you for the night?" I asked, trying to keep my tears from falling.
"As long as you tell me what happened," Winter said, dropping her normal strict demeanor.
"Fine," I sighed.
I then followed her to her bunk and when we got there I told her everything. I started with when I first saw Yang with Blake and ended with what happened earlier. When I was done she pulled me into a hug and said that if I want she can get me a position as a huntress with the military. I agreed immediately and didn't realize I started crying full on.
Yang-
"Damion!" I yelled, storming through the halls to the room he claimed.
"What cuz?" he asked, looking out his door.
"We need to talk," I said.
"Yang, he needs more information than that," Weiss said, walking behind me.
"Let me guess, Ruby said something and you need me to clarify," he said, sighing.
"Yes, she yelled at Weiss and I claiming we only kept trying to do stuff with her to rub in the fact that we get to and I quote 'screw the only girl she's ever loved' and I don't understand what she means," I said.
"Come sit down. I'm gonna make some tea and then I'll explain to you," he somberly said. He made a pot of tea and gave the two of us a cup as he sat down. "I'm going to be quite blunt. The day you kissed Blake for what I'm guessing was the first time Ruby told me that she had a large crush on Blake and she was going to confess and she saw the two of you kissing and it broke her heart."
"How was I supposed to know she had a crush on Blake?" I asked.
"Ruby told me that she confided in you about her crush," he said.
"She just said she had a crush on, damn it," I said, thinking back on what she told me. "on a faunus girl who's butt is bountiful. She told me this before we learned Blake was a faunus, I thought she was talking about Velvet of team CFVY."
"Alright, I can see where you're coming from," Damion said.
"Still, how was I supposed to know if she didn't tell me?"
"Yang, I'll agree that she could have at least told you or have said something," Damion said. "But, you have to look at this from her point of view. To her you took not only the first girl she ever liked enough to tell me but also her partner. From her eyes you took her team from her and left her behind. To her you basically said that she isn't a necessary part of the team. To her she's been alone since we got to the house," Damion sighed.
"I sadly have to agree with Damion here," Weiss said.
"Still, what do we do now?" I asked.
"Now we let her decide what to do," Damion said. "I agree that inviting her here wasn't a good idea. She needs a good space to think and she's become good friends with your sister so going on missions with her as friends is a good place for her to think," he sighed. "But I will ask that you don't tell Blake. It's not any of our places to tell her."
AN-
So, this is a thing I thought of and decided to write. Ruby will be dealing with depression and there will be some topics that are possibly considered taboo by some, just know that I skipped over most of their time at Beacon for a very specific reason. There will be flashbacks and talks of what has happened. If you are triggered by anything I would recommend reading at your own risk.
