Kurt starts his second week feeling lighter than he ever has. Blaine was now his friend; he had a group of friends who treated him like he belongs. Kurt spends a little extra time perfecting his coif in the bathroom this morning, thinking about the sweet boy that finally opened up to him. Typically, he wasn't this happy in the mornings, but his newfound social life has Kurt feeling pretty positive these days.
The only draw back to this school is the uniform dulling his shine, almost insultingly. Kurt stares at himself critically in the mirror, eyes drawn to those pear hips that he remembers hearing about the year before. Well, his hair will look good at least.
It's hard to explain. He hated himself in the blazer but seeing Blaine in it every day made Kurt's blood move in a direction he'd never allowed himself to experience. On one hand, Kurt never wanted to stop looking at Blaine in the jacket. On the other hand, he would give anything to be able to rip that blazer off and have Blaine all to himself. Kurt shook his head to clear his thoughts, there was just no time to replay that fantasy again.
Good timing too, just as he put the dreaded uniform on and added the smallest brooch (he had to know just how serious they take this dress code), there's a knock on his door.
Kurt perks up and opens the door to see Blaine and two coffee cups in hand and a bright smile. "Hello there. I come bearing coffee!"
Kurt smiles back, looking closely at his over-gelled hair, oh that just won't do. But it's only week two, best not push our luck. "Thank you, you didn't have to do that," but taking the coffee eagerly.
Blaine shrugged and readjusted his bag with his free hand to make it more comfortable, "What better way to start a Monday than a cup of coffee. Also, I know you're still getting used to things here and wanted to steal Wes's job of walking you to breakfast." Blaine offers his most charming smile and offers his arm, "Isn't this how the boys are doing it these days?"
Well who's going to say no to that? The two boys walk down the hallway together, ignoring Wes following behind, watching them closely.
Kurt joins David and Jeff who're already stuffing their faces. "Morning boys," Kurt winks at his friends, no one has noticed his small brooch yet, it was nothing outrageous, just a small music symbol. Today was the day he wanted to ask his friends if he could join the Warblers. He thought it might give him a little extra confidence to wear something that made him feel happy.
Suddenly behind him, Kurt hears Blaine and Wes bickering rather loudly. Kurt turns around and sees Wes push in front of Blaine with a manic look in his eye, Blaine returns with an elbow into Wes's ribs. This carried on until they reached the table where Wes tosses his plate into the air in order to beat Blaine to the spot next to Kurt. He's a ninja, he can do this.
Of course, the plate doesn't just land on the table, it breaks in half with the food landing in every which direction. The worst part was the eggs with seven scoops of cheese sauce that landed directly into his new bestie's lap, yikes. Even scarier is that Kurt has yet to move. Blaine was staring at Wes dumbstruck.
David had a few pieces of bacon sitting on his shoulder, Jeff did some very fancy footwork and managed to dodge a pancake and more eggs, seriously how did he eat so much?
Nick approaches the table having just barely missed the entire show, takes one look at the mess and glances at Wes, cause who else would do this? Definitely not Kurt who looks like he's capable of murder right this second, not that Nick could blame him. "Come on Wes, eat your breakfast," as he moves sits in front of Jeff, keeping a careful eye on Kurt.
Kurt slowly turns to look at Wes, "Sit down, Wesley." His voice was steely and cold, Blaine side eyed Wes, still standing in the same spot.
Wes laughs uncomfortably, looking everywhere else but scary face. Turning to Blaine and motioned to the table with his arm out reached. "Oh Blaine, you wanted to sit here. You go ahead, son."
Blaine glares at Wes, about to respond when Kurt speaks with an oddly calm tone. "Wesley, sit down and eat your breakfast while I go and change my clothes."
Wes sits down next to Kurt and eyes the eggs in his lap, "Well, could I at least have my eggs back?"
Blaine's head drops, after begrudgingly sitting in front of Wes, "Wes, maybe we should clean this up and get a different plate."
But instead, Kurt stands up and the mound of eggs drop to the floor. He grabs a part of the plate and fork, scrapes the eggs off the floor and delivers it to Wesley. He grabs his coffee and walks off to go change, silently seething. It's a good thing he didn't see Wes again usually until lunch.
The other boys at the table were glad for the chance to laugh now. Nick shakes his head and grins at David, "You weren't exaggerating, that was a little scary. I hope he's never mad at me."
Jeff laughs but stands up, "that was something else, but guys I'm going to go make sure he can remember how to get to his first class." He looks longingly at Nick who had his full attention on Wes before following after Kurt.
David shakes his head in disbelief, "Damn Blaine, how you gonna handle that when you two get married," smirking at the bright red blush on Blaine's face as he sputters.
"Who said anything about marriage," very frustrating how high his voice got when he was embarrassed. He looks up as the other three boys look at him knowingly, he was so obvious. "Okay, I may have the tiniest crush on him." He looks down quickly, expecting them to tease him. But he looks up and they're actually smiling.
Eventually Nick speaks up, knowing someone should say something, and it's better him than Wes. "You know, we're really just happy for you."
Blaine smiles bashfully, but also feeling grateful to have some great friends, "Well, I don't want to rush anything. We've only known each other a few days, I think it'd be smart to get to know each other better."
David nods in agreement, "That's right, man. Just take it slow and let things happen naturally. We got both your backs regardless." Having just realized Wes had been oddly quiet, he looks over and sees Wes licking the broken plate pieces clean. David watches him in disgust but can't help but laugh at the same time. "oh man seriously, you ate the eggs that Kurt scraped off the damn floor!"
Blaine looks up quickly and shakes his head in disbelief, "Oh my god."
Wes shrugs as he stacks everything up, "I was hungry, and Blaine your boyfriend's breaking the dress code." Wes winks at Blaine walks off with his trash.
Blaine watches Wes's back in confusion, he didn't notice anything different, Wes is so weird. He and David shrug as they start to get up as well.
Kurt gets to lunch later, no longer angry with Wes. He really wanted to join the glee club and knows Wes would be vital to that. Now's not to time for payback, maybe later though.
Kurt grabs his salad and joins the four boys at their table, one empty chair next to Wes yet again, not noticing the irritable look on Blaine's face. He puts a smile on his face anyway as Kurt joins the group. It's just that he wanted to sit by Kurt, Wes has no right to be so stingy.
Kurt pushes the vegetables on his plate nervously while he listens to his friends talk about their favorite movies and whatever else boys talk about. He was too nervous to really give them his full attention.
Blaine frowns at Kurt's behavior, very odd how Kurt eats, definitely not a typical boy's diet. He looks down at his other friends' lunches and sees an assortment of hot dogs and pizza with fries. Kurt has barely even touched the salad he had, and not to mention he didn't eat anything at breakfast. He was already aware that not much about Kurt was typical, but this felt different. But there was no bringing it up yet. He and Kurt were just barely getting comfortable around each other, he wasn't about to push it. Who knows, maybe Kurt's just homesick.
When the table grew quiet after a few minutes, Kurt plucked up the courage to bring up glee club. He looks at Wes who was pouring cheese sauce on his hot dog and winks at Kurt when he sees him looking. Kurt rolls his eyes before addressing the whole table. "So guys, I don't know how things are usually done here, but would there be a chance for me to join the Warblers?" He looks up hopefully and sees everyone at the table smiling, that was encouraging.
David speaks up first, "Well Kurt, we definitely are open to new additions to the Warblers. But there is an audition, you know, to make sure you can actually carry a tune." All the boys besides Wes looking at Kurt curiously, none of them had heard him sing yet.
Kurt giggles lightheartedly, "Well that shouldn't be a problem, I'd love to audition whenever you'll have me." He looks over at Wes who seems the most serious about the Warblers, "What do you think Wes?"
Wes forces himself to look at Kurt's face, his eyes landing on the offending accessory. How could the rest of them just overlook this? How could Kurt put him in this position? He'd fix this, he straightens up in his chair and looks at Kurt importantly, "Yes Kurt, you are welcome to audition, as long as you do so in uniform."
Kurt scoffs, well duh. "Okay, well that shouldn't be a problem either. How's today sound?"
Blaine's eyebrows raise, impressed by his confidence, "You don't want a few days to practice?"
"I feel ready," Kurt hadn't sung in so long, he couldn't wait. He'd come up with a song, no problem. In fact he already knew the song, Taking Chances by Celine Dion. He remembered hearing Rachel Berry sing it at one point. And let's face it, anything Rachel can sing, Kurt can sing better.
Kurt also decided not to do the extra project by Ms. Government, if there's no syllabus, there's no fair way to grade it. Also, after talking to several other teachers, they told him it wasn't enforceable. He and Blaine walk into the classroom after lunch chattering excitedly about Kurt's audition.
"Please Kurt, you have to tell me what you're going to sing," Blaine couldn't wait to hear Kurt sing.
"No sir, you have to wait like everyone else," Kurt winks at him and leads him to their usual seats, ignoring the odd look from the teacher.
Thankfully, she wasn't acting spiteful with him today, maybe she's gotten over her initial dislike of him. Now he could spend the whole period staring at the back of Blaine's head in loving adoration, not that Blaine needed to know that. It was definitely a step up from kicking chair legs. Maybe there was still in ear flick in him though, no that would be mean.
Kurt rolls his eyes at himself for being pathetically in love with someone a week into meeting him. So desperate for Blaine's attention that he would disrupt class again. It was so childish, Kurt did not behave this way. Kurt sighs, hopefully silently.
Kurt looks up and sees the teacher writing on the board, then he looks back to Blaine. Strangely his neck and ears had a pink tint to them. Kind of like they were when Kurt gave him a hard time, interesting. He leans forward and sighs again. Yep, that was it.
Lucky for Blaine, the bell rang before Kurt could do anything else. Blaine stands up and turns to Kurt with an amused smirk on his face, shaking his head, "What our we going to do with you, Kurt."
Kurt gives him a half smile while he stands, "Not some boring project, that's for sure."
Kurt gets to Warblers practice, finally a little nervous, not that he'd admit it. Hopefully, they'd let him try out right away.
Which they did, Wes immediately introduced Kurt as a new potential member to the group. He looked Kurt up and down and settled on the offending brooch, they talked about this.
Kurt chose to ignore him and went straight to the song, he could tell right away that they were surprised by his voice and song. Blaine was immediately impressed; his voice was incredible. No wonder he wasn't nervous. It was beautiful, just like him.
Kurt finished the song and everyone cheers, he couldn't help but blush. He never got this kind of response.
David smiles and stands up, the room quiets for him to speak, "That was amazing, everyone raise your hand if you think Kurt would a good addition to the Warblers." He and everyone raised their hands. Everyone but Wes, who was looking at Kurt sternly. Kurt felt his defenses rising.
But Wes says nothing except that Warblers can end with that today.
Kurt stood staring at Wes with Blaine looking between Kurt and Wes tensely, not really understanding what's going on. He just follows quietly behind Kurt knowing whatever Wes's deal was, Kurt's going to figure it out. As he leaves, he sees Wes arguing heatedly with David and Thad with Jeff stepping up.
Kurt walks out of the choir room, unaware that Blaine was following him, feeling just confused. What was that? He got in, but it seemed like Wes, who was really the first friend he made here, didn't want him there. Well they've only known each other for a week. Maybe he was right to be skeptical in the beginning. Maybe all the kindness was a façade.
Suddenly he feels a hand on his shoulder stopping him from taking off to his room where he can safely vent and maybe cry. He turns around, and sees Blaine looking at him with an annoyingly concerned look on his face. And hour ago, he'd give anything to have Blaine's hands on him, right now he just wanted to be left alone. But even so, he couldn't bring himself to be rude to that incredibly handsome face that was looking at him like that.
This time Blaine made sure to start talking before Kurt could, "I hope you're not planning on skipping dinner, we like having you there. And I for one am so excited to have you in the Warblers. And your voice is the most perfect thing I've ever heard."
Kurt looks at Blaine, a little stunned, but very flattered. Feeling a strange prickle in his eye that he in no way wanted Blaine to notice. "Well, that means a lot Blaine. I just don't understand what to think with Wes."
Blaine gives him an awkward shrug, "I don't know what's going through Wes's head, but I'm sorry he made you upset. Maybe we should go to dinner and go talk it out. Like you and I did, remember? You basically held me hostage. You're a little scary sometimes, you know that?"
Kurt's mouth falls open in shock, "I am not scary, I'm snarky." His face finally breaks into a smile, he puts an arm around Blaine's shoulders and leads them toward the cafeteria as requested. He winks at Blaine's kind of shy but very pleased smile. Not really feeling as confident as he was acting. But he was glad for an excuse to spend more time with Blaine.
Blaine was not sure how to feel about Kurt's arms around him. He loved it for one, but he didn't know what it meant. He'd just told David this morning he was taking it slow with Kurt. But the teasing and the constant touching made Blaine want to stop Kurt right here and kiss him. Why were his feelings so strong so soon? It excited him and worried him at the same time. He didn't want this to be just some relationship that ignites quickly, but then fizzles out in two months with the two of them hating each other. It happens all the time in High School.
Kurt must have sensed his stress, he removed his arm after giving him a small pat on the back first. The two smile at each other as they reach the cafeteria.
The two boys make it through the line, Blaine goes straight for the entrée of the day. It was usually pretty good for cafeteria food, he looks back sees Kurt at the damn salad bar again. Seriously, when did Dalton even put that there?
He stops behind Kurt and watches him place the lettuce in specific places on the plate. Kurt turns around and sees Blaine judging him and rolls his eyes, "Oh come on, not you too."
"What?" Blaine exclaims with a huge smile on his face.
Kurt gives Blaine his most stern expression, "Quit judging my salad."
Blaine shrugs, enjoying the easygoing banter, "Not judging, I just don't get why you don't eat something more fun. Plus, that little salad can't possibly keep you full. Lastly, salad's boring."
Kurt's mouth drops, "Hey, some of us can't just eat whatever we want and still look pretty." He saunters off, knowing Blaine would just keep following him. He did notice a few students watching their back and forth, and actually smiling, that was different. It gave him a warm feeling that people here really were more accepting.
Blaine shakes his head as he checks Kurt out, feeling oddly confident all of a sudden, "Oh I beg to differ, Mr. Hummel." Kurt could eat five cheeseburgers in one sitting and Blaine would still find him gorgeous. This time it was Kurt who had a blush creeping on his face and it was the most adorable thing in the world.
To Kurt's surprise, Wes was sitting in the same place as always. What a confusing human. But what did make him happy, was the loathsome stare Wes received from Blaine.
The second Kurt sits, Jeff goes on a tangent about how much he liked Kurt singing, not interested in dragging out the tension. He wasn't one for arguments and generally got along with anyone.
Kurt looks over at Wes who actually seems like his normal self, using the word normal loosely. "I wasn't expecting you to sit next to me today, Wesley."
Wes frowns at Kurt, looking almost hurt, slips his arm Kurt's like he sometimes does when they're walking. "What you mean, Kurtis?"
Kurt lifted one eyebrow and looked at Wes, he was having none of his shit, "But you don't want me in the Warblers."
Wes sits his silverware down and looks at Kurt seriously, becoming counsel Wes, "Kurt I told you at lunch. If you wanted to audition, you needed to be in uniform."
Kurt frowns in confusion, "Well, what the hell am I wearing, then?"
"That pin, Kurt." Wes's hands almost twitching at the sight of it.
Kurt looks down, having forgotten he was even wearing that with all the craziness the day has brought. He looks around the table and sees the rest of the boys looking at it, but not seeming offended. Blaine took one look at it and rolled his eyes, trying not to laugh.
"It's called a brooch honey, it's just an accessory, who cares," Kurt's voice dry and unbothered, of all the things.
"It's not about accessories, it's about unity. That's why we have uniforms, so everyone is equal."
"Except you have a gavel," Kurt challenges in a heartbeat. He looks at David, who was considering where else in the room he could potentially sit. "I don't see David with a gavel, or Blaine."
Wes frowns and shakes his head at the craziness, "We can't all have gavels, there would be madness."
Kurt's snark building up at the sheer ridiculousness, "Yeah, we can't have that can we Wesley? Mountains of eggs spilling on my lap, fine. But gods forbid I wear a damn brooch."
"When you're a Warbler, you're a part of a team. It's simple as that, Kurt. What you do outside of that, fine. But if you're a Warbler, you have to follow the rules. I can't treat you different, just because we're friends."
Kurt considers Wes's words; he was sympathetic that he shouldn't get special treatment, that's true. Fair enough, he figures. His eyes meet Blaine's who watching him, looking understanding but also hopeful. He looks back at Wes who went back to eating. "Okay, that's fair. How about this for a deal. I'll make sure to take off any accessories before I come to rehearsals. But you can't comment on them outside of Warblers time."
Wes lifts his head back up and swings his hand over to shake, "Sounds like a deal, Kurt."
Kurt takes one look at his hand and sees cheese sauce, more cheese sauce. "Your hands have cheese on them."
Wes puts his hand back down, looking offended, "Well be that way.. Okay now we go that out of the way. I wanted to add that I think I almost joined your team today after you sang, that's all." He looks up at Blaine, ready to fight.
Blaine shakes his head, frowns at Wes, "Okay, I think you and I need to switch." Kurt was his future husband, none of Wes's teasing could be tolerated.
"Actually," David interrupts before Wes could respond. "I think this seating should stay this way for a while." Blaine goes from glaring at Wes, to shooting daggers at David, what the hell is going on now?
Nick and Jeff just watching this whole show, as long as things don't get too heated. They look at each other and smile, grateful they have each other to silently communicate with.
After everyone looks at David in confusion, he decides to explain himself. "I'm just saying, with the two of you," pointing at Blaine and Kurt, "making goo goo eyes at each other all day long, the four of us wouldn't be able to eat without throwing up. And you're not even dating. We got to keep you two separated at meal time."
Jeff shrugs "I really don't mind it."
Kurt smiles at Jeff, is he ever not a little ray of sunshine? "It's okay, David, I totally get it."
David stops dead, looking at Kurt in confusion. He expected a quick, witty remark. "Wait, really." He looks over at Blaine, who looks even less amused than before. Uh oh, he was really just joking. He looks back to Kurt, who's looking at him with a weird grin. Aw man, we've got to quit starting shit with Kurt.
"You're feeling left out," his smile widens when he sees David eye him warily, "I can make goo goo eyes with you too, if means that much to you." Kurt tried to ignore the mildly hurt look in Blaine's eyes.
"No, I'm okay, thank you anyway," Really getting ready to pack up his dinner, things officially getting out of hand.
"Oh, now I'm not enough for you."
David's hands go up in defeat, shaking his head.
One last thing, thought Kurt, he knew this would do it. "Maybe a little footsie under the table-"
"Nope, you win okay, you win," David stands up and starts shoving Blaine over towards his chair, in front of Kurt.
Blaine considers the new seating arrangement, looks at Kurt and smiles brightly, "perfect."
I know things are moving kinda slow, next chapter I'll have more going on. I already have a plan in mind. Thank you guys for your patience
