Chapter 7: Building Bridges

"You seem to be making yourself at home," J'onn said, standing in the door way to the DEO break room. He took a moment to observe Harry as he sat on the rooms only sofa, legs crossed with one arm stretched over the back of the sofa, and the other holding a book at eye level. On the end table next to him rested a half-drunk bottled water and a stack of a half dozen more books.

The picture of a relaxed man enjoying his choice in literature.

He looked up at J'onn, "As 'at home' as one can be." Snapped the book closed. "Sleeping on the sofa of an American federal agency building, on a different earth, with nowhere else to go." He responded with a bitter mutter, more to himself than J'onn.

Setting the book down on the stack, J'onn could see the title. And was a little surprised at the choice when he glanced at the other books to confirm his suspicions. "The Sorcerers Stone. Really? After your initial reaction to Alex learning your name, I didn't think you were a fan. And you would most certainly know your own history better than J. K. Rowlings."

"They were on the end table when I sat down. Probably some one's poor attempt at levity." He brought the bottled water to his lips and took a quick sip. "You know I have to admit I'm impressed. I've read enough books, certainly about my own life, to recognize a... Lockhart-Ian work when I see one." He couldn't quite hide the amusement in his voice. "But your J. K. seems to have done the most accurate attempt to far."

He was distracted from his self-embittering by J'onn's lack of response. He was clearly distracted. 'Must have something big on his mind.'

"But I doubt you're here to critique my choice in literature?" He prompted.

"I have to go out of town for a few days. Alex will be in charge of the DEO until I return. I would appreciate it if you could try to be on your best behavior until I get back?"

Harry paused for a moment to ponder what J'onn was saying. And what he probably wasn't saying, given the lack of details in his explanation. "Do you anticipate any major disasters while you're gone?"

"No," was the Martian's quick response.

"Then I don't foresee any problems. When will you be leaving?"

"Immediately."

Harry's eyebrow raised. Again, the martian's response had been short and to the point. 'He's anxious to get out of here.' "Do you need me to inform Kara and Alex for you?"

"I'm on my way to see them now." J'onn said as he moved towards the door.

"J'onn," Harry stopped him. "May I offer one bit of advice for your trip?"

Standing in the doorway, J'onn just raised his eyebrows in indication that he was listening.

"Where ever you're going, whatever you're doing... try not to get yourself killed." Having said his piece, he reopened his book and continued reading where he left off.

J'onn merely paused for a beat before muttering to himself, "Sound advice in any situation," Then he walked out the door.

Winslow Shott Jr. was in a very good mood.

For the last two years, he has gotten to work side by side with his favorite superhero, who is also his best friend. He works for a government agency that gives him carte blanche to experiment with all kinds of alien tech. He got to help save the world on multiple occasions (technically making him a superhero). And just recently he found out that his favorite fictional character isn't fictional at all and is also another superhero.

'Life is good.' Winn thinks to himself as he typed away on his tablet.

He was currently working on a project that had intrigued him since he met his good buddy Barry a year and a half ago. He was thrilled that he was finally going to be able to test the capabilities of a speedster.

Ever since he heard about the (unofficial) race between Kara and Barry that sent him back to his home earth, he had been dying to know who was faster, a speedster or a kryptonian. Now he would get to find out.

'As soon as I work out how to test a speedster's abilities without frying every circuit in my tablet.'

Harry had yesterday agreed to being tested. But Winn had made the mistake of thinking a remote bio-monitor and the DEO jogging track was all he would need. He started to run and immediately every monitor attached to his person had shorted out. Apparently, the energy given off when a speedster runs can be a little more than standard devices could handle.

But Winn wasn't going to let that deter him. Solving this kind of question is exactly the kind of challenge he lived for.

'How do I reinforce the monitoring devices?' He contemplated, as he stared at the schematics for the bio monitors. They had been designed by Mr. and Mrs. Danvers to study Superman and had been refined by Alex to better help Kara test her limits. But apparently a speedster posed a different sort of challenge than a Kryptonian.

'I know the system in Barry's suit was able to-' Winn leaned back in his chair as the answer to his problems just smacked him upside the head. 'I've been trying to solve problems that have already been solved.'

With that, Winn shot out of his chair. Hell bent for the armory room where they stored the spare dimensional extrapolator. He had a very long-distance phone call to make.

"What do you think he meant?"

J'onn glanced over at Kara in the passenger's seat of his space ship. They were currently on their way to his home planet of Mars to help an old friend. Two hours into their journey and she had been completely silent since they took off. But given recent events, he was happy she was still speaking to him at all.

Given the tension between them lately, he was surprised (pleasantly surprised) when she so quickly volunteered to help him on his journey to his home planet.

"Can you narrow that down a little Kara?" J'onn asked. Unsure of who or what she was talking about.

"Paladin. Harry-," she quickly corrected herself with a shake of her head. After months of thinking of him as Paladin, the speedster from another earth. Using his actual name was taking some getting use too.

"When he spoke to me. After the fight with Psi. He said something to me that I can't get out of my head." She explained, with some trepidation coloring her tone. "He said that we were both broken."

Kara's tone changed with that statement. She sounded as though she couldn't decide if she should be insulted by the comparison or intrigued by what it revealed. She must have been stewing over this for a while.

"He actually said that its how we were alike." She paused to gather her thoughts. "I mean, I get why he thinks that about me. That's how I've felt ever since Mon-El-."

J'onn reached over to where her hand was resting between their seats and held it. Kara didn't turn from the view out the window, but she turned her hand over and interlaced their fingers. He gave it a brief squeeze, offering her what little strength he could.

Alex had told J'onn about her conversation with Kara before the statue unveiling at the water front. Needless to say, he was just as concerned as Alex had been to learn how Kara had really been feeling. He wasn't lying when he told her that she was the strongest person he knew, but sometimes everybody needed a little strength from others. And being intimately familiar with this particular feeling of loss, J'onn wished their was more he could do to help.

"But," she began, coming back to herself. "What I don't get is why he would say that about himself." Still not looking at him, but her confusion was apparent by her tone and the crinkle between her eyebrows. "I mean I've read the books. I know his life was far from perfect, but everything worked out in the end. So I can't figure out why he would think of himself as broken."

"For that matter: why is he even here?" She asked before he could respond, finally turning to look at him. Now that she started, she appeared to be on a role. "I mean, Barry came here the first time by accident. The second time was to get my help with an alien invasion on their earth. So why did Harry come here? Why is he still here? I mean he shows up just in time to help with the Daxamite invasion and what... sticks around because we have nice zoos?"

J'onn didn't say anything for a moment as he contemplated Kara's questions. He remembered what Alex had forced Harry to reveal in his interrogation. The mysterious They that sent Harry here. That set off all sorts of alarms in J'onn's head. The idea that some unknown organization could be pulling Harry's strings, and trying to pull theirs was very concerning. But that was a problem for another day.

"I think there is more to his being here then even he is aware of." J'onn obfuscated. "And since he has been here for several months now, and appears to be staying for the foreseeable future, you are going to have to find a way to work with him. Especially now that he has officially started working with us."

J'onn waited with baited breath for Kara's response. He knew he was navigating some dangerous waters at the moment. He became worried when her grip on his hand tightened, but felt encouraged when she didn't let go.

"I don't know how." She admitted with a bitter mutter. "I don't know how to work with him knowing what he's done. Knowing what he might do. I don't know how..." She stopped and pulled her bottom lip between her teeth as J'onn waited for her to continue. "I don't know how to—."

He felt his heart drop into his stomach. Kara wasn't just the strongest person he knew; she was also the kindest. She forgave him for shooting her out of the sky when they first revealed the DEO to her. She forgave Mon-El for lying about his identity (and a host of other character flaws). She even forgave Alex for killing her Aunt Astra. He honestly didn't think there was a limit to the compassion in her heart. And the thought that he had found it was almost physically painful.

"Maybe it just starts with saying the words. And you go from there."

"Go where exactly?" She asked with a little heat entering her voice. "I say- the words," yes, J'onn had clearly noticed how she was actively avoiding say the words 'I forgive him,' and what, we become best friends and bond over baking and a shared love of cats or something?" Her opinion on that scenario was underscored by the dry sarcasm and incredulity in her voice.

"If you decide you want to spend more time baking that's your choice. I certainly will never turn down your chocolate chip cookies. But Kara, forgiveness in itself doesn't alter your relationship. It's not about flipping a switch and suddenly becoming best friends. It's about..." J'onn trailed off as he tried to think of a way to articulate his thoughts. Then he turned and waited for her to meet his eyes. "It's about taking your hands off of his throat."

Kara didn't say anything. Just sighed before turning back to watching the stars go by. They didn't speak again until they reached their destination. If J'onn only knew how prophetic the tone of this conversation was going to be for him.

"And you're sure these will hold up this time?" Harry asked, with a hint of trepidation in his voice. "Because when we tried this earlier these things practically self-destructed."

"Don't worry. With a little advice from some friends from another earth these are 'Cisco certified' guaranteed not to self-destruct." Winn answered as he attached the last monitoring evidence to Harry's torso and gestured that he could lower his shirt.

"I don't know who Cisco is, but fine I'll take your word for it." He knew he was probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. But damn if those things didn't hurt when they burst into flames against your skin.

"So now what?"

With his eyes on the computer screens he had wheeled into the corner of the DEO exercise room, Winn answered, "Now you start running. Go."

"Wait a minute. Just jog around the track? I thought you said you were working on some kind of speedster treadmill."

"I got the schematics from my buddies on earth one. I just have to finish building it. But the tech guys finished these first and... well," he paused for just a moment. "I didn't really want to wait anymore. And plus, Alex and Maggie's bridal shower starts in a few hours, so no time to waste."

"Agent Danvers is getting married?" Harry didn't bother trying to hide his surprise at that information. Being second in command of a major government agency at her age, he had pegged her as the married to her work type. 'Guess people surprise you every day.'

"Yeah and I still have to finish build the new treadmill, and I want to get some biometric data on you. So, let's go, chop chop." He said, still not looking away from his computers, and punctuated his words by clapping his hands twice.

Winn, with his eyes still glued to his screens, didn't realize anything was wrong until he noticed the lack of lightning crackling. But he did hear a low foreboding cat-like growl coming from right in front of him. His eyes slowly moved upwards, and he noticed Harry standing over him with slit cat eyes that were ringed in lightning and his lips twisted into a snarl showing off his teeth that Winn would swear weren't that sharp a minute ago.

Winn swallowed the lump in his throat. Realizing he had been barking orders at a guy who could turn into a man eating animal and who clearly didn't like being bossed around. He quickly tried to back step.

"I-I mean you can s-start whenever you're ready. Please." He stumbled. Tacking the please on the end to alleviate some of the tension.

Harry decided to let him off the hook and turned to the jogging track and started running. As a lightning storm started inside the DEO, Winn began scrutinizing the date the monitoring devices were sending back. At first, he was thrilled the sensors were working before he noticed the results they were sending back.

"What the—"

_o0o_

Alex was having a great time. She may have made a fuss about her mother visiting and Eliza's insistence on busting out every bridal shower game in the book. But with a glass of red wine in one hand and watching her fiancé being congratulated by all of their friends, even her mother showing off pictures of her at various embarrassing stages in her life on the bridal board couldn't dampen her mood.

Not that she was going to tell her that. Eliza might use it as an excuse to break out her baby book. That thought caused a feeling of dread to run up her spine and made her shoulders shudder. Nope she would be keeping her good mood under wraps (on pain of everlasting humiliation).

Though there was one dark spot in her mood. Maggie's father had yet to make an appearance. She knew that the meeting to pick him up from the bus stop yesterday had gone well. But Alex was still worried that the other shoe would drop after he arrived at the party.

'IF' he arrived. He was currently the only invitee not in attendance, and she was worried that he might have changed his mind about coming at all. She didn't want anything to hurt Maggie. Especially not her bigot father. And as long as she was here, nothing would.

Her eyes flew to the door at the sound of someone knocking.

'Well, time to meet my fiancés family. He had better keep things civil.' She braces herself as she tries to casually move towards the door. But upon opening it is stunned to find the last person she expected.

"What are you doing here?" Alex asked, shocked to find Harry standing in the hallway. Thankfully, he was wearing black slacks and a burgundy button-down shirt, and not his Paladin suit.

"Well currently I'm standing in the hall of an apartment building answering odd questions." He replied with a grin and a show of dry humor the British were famous for. "May I come in?"

Stunned at the fact he was here; Alex didn't really process his request until after she had stepped out of his way. Her hand on his shoulder kept him from getting very far.

"What are you doing here?" Alex repeated with a little more steel added to her voice.

"I won't be staying." Harry placated quickly. "Aside from the fact that I wasn't invited, I know I'm not really welcome."

That comment had Alex glancing behind her at the other party goers. Fortunate no one who would recognize Harry seemed to have notice his arrival. James was chatting with Maggie over by the snack table and Eliza seemed to be regaling a riveted Winn with some story of her life and kept pointing at certain pictures on the bridal board.

She made a mental note to interrogate him later about what exactly her mother had told him. Harry's voice brought her attention back to him.

"But Winn mentioned earlier that you were having a bridal shower today. And in the interest of building bridges I thought a wedding present might be a welcome olive branch." Here he raised his hand, which Alex just noticed was holding a brown paper bag. "I hope you aren't offended by the lack luster dressing but I only just heard about your engagement and it was difficult enough finding a traditional present."

Reaching out and taking the bag from his hand, Alex briefly wondered what kind of traditional wedding present he thought could build bridges between them. 'Whatever it is must be made out of solid gold if he thinks it's going to buy any goodwill from me.'

Reaching into the bag Alex pulled an object, not made of gold, but of polished brass. Her eyebrows shot up at the sight of the antique sextant she was holding. Alex couldn't hide her surprise.

"It's beautiful." Her shock quickly turned to confusion as her gaze moved from the antique back to his face. "But help me out here, how is an antique polished brass sextant a traditional wedding present?"

"Well I didn't mean traditional for weddings. I meant traditional for my family." He answered.

Alex prompted him to continue with just a look.

"After the war was over and Voldemort dead, I finally had the time to do something I've always wanted to do. Learn about my father's family." Harry explained. "But my problem was how to do that. Almost everybody who knew them was dead and the remaining few didn't know them well enough to convey a family history. So, I had to find a starting point myself."

Alex, who had been silent up to this point, curiously asked, "Why not ask the goblins at Gringotts? If your parents had an account with them then surely, they would have documents that could give you a starting point. They would probably have files pertaining to your grandparents, and maybe even your great grandparents as well." Alex inquired, now thoroughly caught up in his story.

"I had considered that. But funny thing." He continued, but his voice and the sardonic look on his face showed he thought it was anything but funny. "When you are the first person to ever successfully rob a goblin bank, steal one of their dragons and cause hundreds of thousands of galleons in damages, they tend to be offended. And nothing and nobody on any earth holds a grudge quite like the goblins."

Alex tilts her head a little in thought, before raising her eyebrows and giving a small nod acknowledging his point.

"Needless to say, I was persona non grata. They weren't going to be doing me any favors like showing me their ledgers. Even ones pertaining to my own family. So, I was left with searching the only piece of property I knew for certain they ever inhabited. Their cottage in Godric's Hollow."

This must bring back much fonder memories if the way his posture eased was any indication.

"The ministry may have claimed it as a historical monument but they couldn't deny access to the last surviving member of the family that legally owned the property." His face, which had been easing towards a smirk at the thought of getting the best of the Wizarding government, quickly lifted into a grin. "And in a rare stroke of good luck, they left everything inside exactly where it was that night."

"So, what did you find in there?" Alex nearly jump out of her skin from the sudden sound of her fiancé speaking right behind her. Spinning around she found Maggie practically at leaning on her shoulder. She had been so lost in Harry's story that she failed to notice her approach.

"When did you get here?" Alex asked, a little outraged that somebody had managed to sneak up on her. She was a trained federal agent damn it; nobody should be able to do that. Not even Maggie.

"Somewhere around persona non grata." Maggie answered, with a not so small amount of mirth. She knew she had snuck up on Alex and she wasn't going to let her forget it any time soon.

Looking behind her, Alex could see that James had moved over towards Eliza and Winn. He seemed to be trying to play catch up on whatever story they had been talking about. But from how his eyes kept wondering from Eliza to them, she could guess he was over there on Maggie's request.

'Maggie probably asked him to keep Eliza distracted. Don't want her to notice who arrived. No telling how she would react around Harry. Or if she even knows that he is Paladin. I don't know if Kara shared that with her, but I know I haven't. Either way, better get him out of here fast.' But not before she heard the whole story of course.

"Well what did you find in your old home?" Maggie's question brought her back to the here an now.

"Sadly, there wasn't much. Years of neglect and disrepair, not to mention a few broken windows exposed the contents to the elements. There were a few worn out photos that were salvageable. Some books and a few family keep sakes. But located in my father's desk in his study I found a real treasure." The grin on his face stretched into a full dimpled smile that if she wasn't gay would have had Alex weak in the knees. "His Personal Journal."

Alex and Maggie could both hear the capital letters in his words. It obviously meant a great deal to him. And as a daughter who lost her father at a young age, Alex found herself actually sympathizing with him.

"I admit my eyes got a little wet at the sight of my father's signature on the inside cover. I didn't even wait to get home to read it. I just sat down in that rickety old chair behind his desk." His eyes had turned a little vacant as he chuckled, more to himself than at them. Lost in his memories now. "At the time I didn't even notice the clouds of dust I stirred up."

"I didn't start at the beginning though. He grew up in the midst of a magical Cold War, and I suppose I didn't want to search for the happy memories. So, I went looking the happiest day that I had a vague time frame to look for; my parents wedding date."

Later in the evening Maggie would tease Alex about the dopey grin she had on her face as Harry talked about his parents wedding. She may be a badass in a leather jacket and boots on the outside. But she was a gooey romantic on the inside, and Maggie just adored that about her.

"September 2st, 1978. I never knew the exact date before that. Hagrid had told me they were married shortly after they graduated from Hogwarts. And Sirius said he had been their best man. But nobody had ever mentioned the specific date of their anniversary to me."

Alex wondered if the smile on his face was hurting his cheeks as he ran his hand through his hair in an unconscious gesture.

"I'll probably never know for certain, but I bet my dad picked the date himself. The idea of celebrating the most romantic day of your married life the day after you ship your kids off to school every year. No noise, no distractions just you and the woman you love totally alone to do whatever you want." Here he gave them a look that was definitely more devious and reiterated.

"Whatever you want."

"Maggie, I think we should change our wedding— ." Maggie's hand shot out to lightly slap Alex on the shoulder, quickly cut her off.

"Do not even finish that sentence Alex. Not after all the trouble we had booking the venue." Have said her piece, Maggie turned back to face Harry.

"And As riveting as your story is, it still doesn't explain why your family gives sextants as wedding presents."

An 'ah ha' look crossed Harry's face. Suddenly remembering why, he was even telling this story in the first place. "Well in my father's journal he wrote about how while he was getting dressed my grandfather came to see him. And he presented my dad with his own sextant. He told him it was a family tradition dating back to when the men in the Potter family made their livings as privateers in the British Royal Navy. At the time it was considered a very practical gift. And they just kept doing it long enough that it became tradition, even after my family stopped joining the Royal Navy."

Alex grew suspicious when the look on Harry's face swiftly changed to something between playful and conspiratory. "Of course, on my earth, it also served a purpose that was absolutely crucial to the couple getting married. Some that many brides were exceptionally grateful for."

Suspense properly built, Alex and Maggie leaned closer to him and waited with baited breath for him and finish. When it became clear he wasn't going to put them out of their misery, Alex prompted him. "What purpose would that be exactly?"

Now Harry's look was positively puckish. "It kept the groom from getting lost on his way to the alter."

There was one second of silence before Maggie was bent over laughing loudly with her eyes clenched shut and her arms wrapped around her stomach. Alex was better at keeping her composure, but even she failed at keeping a straight face and holding in an amused snort.

Chuckling at his successful attempt at humor, Harry looked up to see that the rest of the occupants in he room were now staring at the three of them. Their laughter having drawn their attention. None of the looks he was receiving were hostile, merely inquisitive. 'Most of them are wondering who I am. But I can't risk answering too many questions about myself. I think it's time to leave.'

"Well I just wanted to give you your gift. I had best be going, so I bid you adieu."

"I'll show you out." Alex said as she placed the sextant back in its bag and handed it to Maggie, who made her way towards the gift table.

Harry had come to this party today in the hopes of improving his relationship with the members of this earth's heroes. As Alex opened the door for him, with a far more pleasant look on her face then when he arrived, he believed he had succeeded.

"Just out of curiosity," Alex began as he stepped into the hallway. "Did you ever find the sextant your grandfather gave to your father on his wedding day?"

Turning back to her, Harry again smiled as he replied, "It was sitting inside a glass case on the corner of his desk. I nearly dismissed it when I walked in the room. I thought it was just a decoration. You know, window dressing for his office."

Harry averted his eyes and ran his fingers through his hair again. "If I hadn't read his journal, I would have written it off as just another piece of furniture. Probably would have left it behind to be forgotten. Its scary to think some of the things I could've missed out on... some of the things I have missed out on," he corrected himself. "Just goes to show you how important family is."

Alex just bit her bottom lip as she watched him turn to walk toward the elevator. Once again experiencing an unexpected rise of emotion for the man that a few days ago she had despised for what he had put her sister through.

She was distracted by the sight of Harry bumping into a man as he got off the elevator. They exchange their 'excuse me's' as Harry moved past him and he moved towards her. Recognizing him as Maggie's father, Alex plastered a smile on her face and prepared for another unpredictable encounter.

_o0o_

The next day, Alex walked into the DEO having been summoned by Winn for something he claimed she had to see to understand. 'God help him if this isn't something important.'

Alex wasn't in the best of moods this morning. After Harry left the bridal shower and Maggie's father arrived, everything seemed to be going well. For all of five minutes before he stormed out and Maggie chased after him. When she returned alone a few minutes later Alex tried to ask about it. Maggie wouldn't tell her what was said exactly. Only that her father wasn't coming back and not to expect him at the wedding.

Alex tried to console her but Maggie just showed her a fake tight-lipped smile and said they should just put him out of their minds and get back to the party. And Alex could tell that Maggie really tried to do that. But it was clear to even those people who didn't know Maggie all that well that despite the happy front she put on, her mood had been soured.

Later that evening, while they were cleaning up, Maggie told Alex that she had something she needed to say to her father before he got on his bus home tomorrow. Alex didn't press to find out what, but she promised Maggie that she would drive her to the bus stop and wait for her while she spoke to her father.

That's why she had been so annoyed when she received Winn's call this morning. Mr. Sawyer's bus didn't leave for another two hours, but Alex didn't feel like being away from Maggie right now. 'So whatever it is that I need to see had better be crucial or Winn is going to regret this.' Alex vowed to herself.

Turning the corner into the DEO exercise room, Alex stopped just inside the door. Momentarily stunned by the presence of Harry in sweat pants and a sleeveless shirt, and some piece of technology that vaguely resembled a treadmill. But looked way too souped up to serve such a simple task.

"Hey Alex, perfect timing." Winn called from her right. He stood in a nearby corner of the room with several computer monitors in front of him. He waved her over. Moving to stand next to Winn, she shot Harry a brief look of curiosity. He just shrugged in return, not sure either why Winn had seen fit to call the acting director of the DEO.

She decided to just cut to the chase and ask, "Winn what is going on? Why is Harry here? And what is that machine?"

"That Alex is a specially designed treadmill for speedsters. You see I've been trying to get an accurate measure of what Harry over there is capable of but none of our instruments were designed to handle speedsters. But instead of trying to rework our technology myself I had the idea of just asking our friends on Team Flash." Winn didn't realize that as he explained Alex was making a mental reminder to have a conversation with him about protocol and how he shouldn't be contacting outsiders for help without speaking to her or J'onn first. He certainly shouldn't be contacting other earths without supervision. Friends or not.

"It's a refined version of a super treadmill, (he was going to have to come up with a better name than that later) designed by my good buddy Cisco Ramon of Earth-1. I used the dimensional extrapolator last night to contact the guys at STAR Labs and they were kind enough to send me the schematics. They were also kind enough to send all the physiological data they've compiled on Barry and all of the other speedsters they've met. So now, not only do I have a baseline for Harry, but we now have a database of speedsters from multiple different earths and times." Moments like this, with Winn smiling at her like a kid in a candy store after admitting he did something that he probably shouldn't have. These moments gave her an idea of what it was like to have a little brother.

'Seriously, why do I always have to be the responsible elder sibling to everyone in Kara's circle of friends?' Alex pondered with a growing sense of annoyance pooling in her belly. Deciding to noodle over that later (preferably with an open bottle of Merlot wine as a companion) Alex raised her hand to sweep a few strands of hair out of her line of sight and got back to business.

"And what about this required me to come here on one of my few days off exactly?"

Still smiling, and not noticing or simply ignoring the grumpiness in Alex's voice, Winn continued. "Oh, you're going to love this." Turning to the speedster who had been waiting quiet and patient up to this point, "Ready when you are buddy."

Without a word, Harry stepped on to the treadmill and started running. Amazingly, even though his arms and legs were complete blurs of movement and bolts of electrical energy were trailing behind him the treadmill was actually keeping pace with him. Alex was impressed.

"Like I said, my good buddy Cisco designed this thing to handle the Flash's speed. Though I admit to making a few Winn style improvements to it." He bragged.

"But that's not what I had to show you. Look at these biometrics." He pointed to the monitors. One showed cameras recording him from multiple angles. Another showed the status of the treadmill itself and how it was holding up under the strain. Very well apparently. But it was the third screen that Winn was pointing at. It showed Harry's biometric data while he was running. Heart rate, blood pressure, nerve conduction velocity and a host of other things that Alex didn't think it was even possible to monitor, even with advanced alien technology.

'Clearly Winn and the guys on earth one work very well together.' Alex's eyes scanned over the information that they were getting with the precision and understanding of a scientist with experience in the abnormal.

"All of his results are clearly superhuman but that's to be expected. Given what I know about speedsters, he seems to be in perfect health." She concluded. "You said the STAR Labs team sent you information on multiple speedsters. How does he measure up against the other known speedsters?"

"So glad you asked." He announced with a flourish. Hitting a few keys, he changed the screen to show Harry's chart and the charts of three other speedsters. Each chart was labeled with a different speedster's alias. There was the Flash, the Reverse Flash, and somebody named Savitar. Alex wasn't sure where that last name came from, but she supposed Harry couldn't be the only speedster who didn't feel the need to name themselves in a way that alluded to speed.

Each chart listed the individuals known top speed. Alex's eyebrows shot up at the sight. "Winn are you sure about this information?" If this was accurate then Harry was the slowest of the four.

"Thought you would catch that." Winn said, a bittersweet smile gracing his features. As if he was still enjoying himself despite the fact his new favorite meta human wasn't the best out there. Kind of like a sports fan who knew their favorite team wasn't going to win any championships, but supported them anyway.

"Yeah, at his top speed our buddy Barry can reach just over five thousand miles per hour. If he pushes as hard as he can Harry gets a little over four thousand mph. Reverse Flash and Savitar are slower than Barry but would still outstrip Harry by miles."

"What about other known speedsters?"

"There are a few of them: Jesse Quick, Trajectory, Kid Flash, Jay Garrick. Harry is faster than all of them. There was another speedster named Zoom who the guys on team Flash have listed as 'status unknown." He actually did air quotes, probably less out of emphasis and more out of frustration over this gap in their information. "Between the two of them its a coin toss who would win. But since this Zoom guy apparently needed a drug called Velocity-9 to enhance his speed, I'd put my money on Harry on principle." Winn passionately explained.

"But at the end of the day... he's not he fastest man alive?" Trust Alex to put an issue into perspective.

"Not even close." His smile did leave with that admission like Alex expected i to. There was also something about the way that Winn was speaking. Like this knowledge wasn't dampening his enthusiasm as much as Alex would have expected. She could tell she was missing something.

"Then why do you still look so..." She trailed off, unsure on how to explain her intuition. But it didn't matter. Winn could tell what she was trying to say.

"Because of the really weird part. Check this out." A few keystrokes later and the charts depicting the four fastest men they knew of was replaced by two graphs depicting various rises and falls in the performance of Harry and Barry. It took a moment, but Alex finally saw what Winn meant by really weird.

"This doesn't make any sense. According to this graph, Harry is moving slower than Barry, but he's putting out twice as many tachyon particles as Barry." Looking at Winn she saw him nodding his head without saying a word. He was doing that thing again where he was trying to build suspense before he made a big reveal. Alex wasn't in the mood to indulge him.

"How can that be possible? Tachyons are what make a person a speedster. If Harry has more tachyons in his cells shouldn't he be faster than Barry?"

"Not exactly. According to Dr. Caitlin Snow and Harrison Wells of earth-2, how fast a speedster can move is determined by a number of factors like physiology, diet, even mental state can affect how fast a speedster runs. Tachyons are just the fuel for their powers." Winn grimaced as he groped for an analogy to explain what he had learned. He smiled as he finally landed on one. "If you double the size of your gas tank it doesn't make your car any faster."

She pointed a finger at Winn, comprehension dawning on her. "But it does make your car run longer."

"What's the difference between an Olympian sprinter and a marathon runner." Winn continued. The man just loved his analogies. "A sprinter is faster than a marathoner but only over short distances. A marathoner on the other hand maintains a slower speed but over a much greater distance. So, while earth-1 has the fastest speedster sprinter..."

"We have the multiverses fastest marathon runner." Turning from Winn's smiling face to look back at the man who was still a blur on a treadmill, she just nodded to herself. "I think we can put that to good use."

The next day found Harry, Alex, Winn, Kara and J'onn all standing around a table in Alex's lab. On the table rested, what Harry guessed, was a piece of Martian technology. Some kind of scepter with a glowing purple stone on the end.

"It is the Staff of H'ronmeer. It is a sacred icon in Martian culture. Unfortunately, it is also a weapon of considerable power." J'onn explained in his usual deep baritone.

"He's not kidding about that. I saw this thing vaporize several white martians." Kara weighed in, her wariness of the staff obvious.

"For that reason, among others, my father is hesitant to leave it in the hands of the DEO. I've tried to explain that they can be trusted, but he isn't happy about it. In an effort to pacify him I promised to look into other alternatives." J'onn's eyes went around the room briefly. "Any suggestions?"

"I could take it to the fortress." Kara immediately offered. Unfortunately, J'onn shot that idea down.

"While I don't believe my father would object to me entrusting the staff to you Kara, I'm not sure that's a good idea. Cadmus has already infiltrated the fortress before. I would rather not take that chance."

"I have a suggestion." Harry offered. He had only been invited because he happened to be in the room when Alex had asked Winn to accompany her to see J'onn. Now all eyes in the room were on him. "I know some place that has never been infiltrated, can't be reached by anyone without my help and has a security system like no other."

"And where is this exactly?" J'onn asked while Kara (who had refused to even look at him since he entered the room) glared at him.

Harry just smiled. "My vault."

I know what you are thinking. He said this chapter would be out quick, lol. I admit after the end of the previous season of Arrow, not to mention how Kara and Lena left things, I nearly saw the end of my love for the Arrowverse. But after watching crisis and seeing Oliver and Felicity reunited, not to mention Mia getting to meet her younger parents, I feel so much better about all of the series. I found my love again, as well as my muse. And as part of a new years resolution I am going to try to publish one chapter a month. Time will tell if I can stick to that, but at the time I post this chapter I am already three thousand words in. So, here's hoping. For my writing and for Kara and Lena. May she see reason before she goes the way of Morgana in Merlin.

On to more important things, what did you guys think about that story I made up about Harry finding his fathers journal? I thought it was a nice original touch. Just a taste, but I promise you next chapter you will get a much more in depth look at Harry's back story. Not everything of course, I have to keep you guys on the hook some how. And I would like to take a moment and thank my beta readers War Sage and kathryn518. Appreciate the hard work guys. And I want to take a second and thank nagyg2000 for his review. It was heart felt and very welcome.

But I want to leave you guys with a question because there is something I don't get. Harry Potter is one of if not the most popular fanfiction base of all time. And Supergirl has a huge fan base (all of you are proof of that). So why are there only eleven crossover story between them? What, is it just that hard for others to marry the two series? We need more ideas, and I encourage you guys to give it some thought and go publish. I look forward to your posts. Good morning, good afternoon and good night.
