Hikigaya Hachiman laid in his bed in the hospital. The doctors came in and told him how life was going to be different and the nurses came in to bring him food, but it was all a blur. Time didn't matter anymore to him. He had been through the seven stages of grief but he was stuck at the last one, Acceptance.

How could this have happened…

He had a lot of time to think about this question to himself. Hikigaya Hachiman wasn't the type of person to show his feelings; he had never cried ever since he was a child. But this incident hit him hard. It left a deep scar that wasn't going to heal. He had all these feelings but he bottled them up and just stayed quiet.

How could I let this happen…

This is another question that he asked himself a lot. He knew that he wasn't responsible for the accident but…

If only…

There were many of these scenarios in Hikigaya Hachiman's mind.

"If only I was faster, I could've reached her sooner…"

"If only I went with her to the store, instead of staying at the intersection…"

And the biggest one..

"If only I had shared my true feelings with her…"

Hikigaya Hachiman always said that eventually he would tell her how he felt, but he always put it off. Now, those feelings would never reach her. He started crying, something that he had done a lot recently. He was sad, but he was also angry. He was angry at the truck driver for doing this, but he was mostly angry at himself.

While he was crying he heard something…

"Onii-chan"

Hikigaya Hachiman immediately looked up to see his sister standing in front of him. A huge smile on her face. His mouth opened and his tear filled eyes widened. She leaned forward and whispered to him.

"Onii-chan… why are you blaming yourself."

Hachiman opened his mouth to reply when all of a sudden, the door opened. He glanced at who was at the door.

"There are some people here to see you, Hikigaya," said one of his nurses.

Hachiman looked back to where his sister was and saw nothing. He frowned.

"I guess I was just seeing things…"

He looked at the nurse and put on a fake smile.

"Sure, send them in."

Yukino Yukinoshita sat with Yui Yuigahama in the lobby of the hospital. She was in deep thought while they waited for the nurse to come get them to see Hikigaya.

Yukino worried about Hachiman's mental health.

"He has shown a lack of caring about his life before…"

"He says he doesn't care about getting insulted, but I can tell it hurts him…"

"If he didn't value his life before, how bad is it going to be now without a sister…"

Her thoughts were interrupted by the nurse.

"The patient will see you now."

Yukino and Yui stood outside Hachiman's door. They looked at each other, took a deep breath, and entered the room.

"Hikki!" screamed Yui with a smile. She quickly ran to hug him, to which he pushed her away.

Yukino observed the room as soon as she entered it. There were machines surrounding Hikigaya's bed, there was a rather large oxygen tank with a tube running to the mask that he was wearing, there were multiple syringes that were attached to him inserting fluids into him from bags.

Then, Yukino saw his face and her eyes widened. There were bags under his eyes indicating a lack of sleep, his eyes were drooping, not just from the lack of sleep but probably from an immense sadness. And even though there was a mask in front of it, Yukino could tell that his smile was fake. He was trying to look good for them so they wouldn't worry.

"We were really worried about you Hikki…" said Yui with a frown, "... are you alright."

Yukino watched very closely how he answered this question.

"I'm fine guys, you shouldn't worry about me, I can recover from these injuries."

He was a very bad actor. He gave the most generic answer to the question and he avoided eye contact while speaking. After giving his answer there was an awkward silence until Yuigahama spoke in a quiet voice.

"I would just like to say, I am sorry for your loss-"

"Don't..." snapped Hachiman, then he saw Yui's shock. He felt the chest pain, he was getting worked up and his heart was beating faster. He needed to calm down.

"What I mean is, you don't have to say those things to me, it's fine."

Yukino noticed two things at that moment. One, there were tears at the brims of Hikigaya's eyes. Two, he immediately grabbed his chest and winced when he snapped at Yuigahama.

"Are you okay?" Yukino asked, "And I mean REALLY okay."

"Please… stop asking me that, it doesn't matter if I am okay or not."

"Hikki…" Yui said, "It does matter… to us."

Yukino noticed that Hachiman was getting an angry expression as he looked away from them. She also noticed that his grip on his chest tightened.

"Hikigaya-kun, is something wrong with your chest."

"THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CHEST." Hikigaya snapped.

He glanced at his two friends and saw the horror on their faces. The pain in his chest was getting to be unbearable and he was starting to struggle for air.

"I'm… sorry, I didn't… mean to yell" said Hikigaya between heavy breaths for oxygen.

"Would you… mind leaving?" He said looking away from his friends.

Yui stepped forward, "Hikki… don't push us away-"

"Please." Hikigaya interrupted.

"Yui, let's go." said Yukino, "He's not in the mood right now."

Yukino noticed that when he snapped he was struggling for air, she thought it best to leave him alone and not aggravate him.

As the girls were leaving, they all said their goodbyes.

"Bye Hikki…"

"Bye Hikigaya-kun…"

Hachiman, breathing hard, just stared at them sadly and waved.

Author's Note:

This chapter was very hard to write. As I said before, I'm kind of new to writing so you will probably find a lot of mistakes in this chapter. I wanted to give a chapter that shows just how sad Hachiman is. I hope I accomplished that. I also tried to fix the nickname problem in this chapter (thanks to Kevinhs11 for pointing that out). Thanks for reading and make sure to leave a review to tell me how I'm doing.

See you next chapter-Gabriel
