A MESSED UP DESTINY

A STAR WARS STORY

Chapter 25

Disclaimer: Disney owns everything and I make no profit from this.

Hello there everyone and welcome to chapter 25 of the story! Today's chapter picks up a few minutes after the last one ended, and begins with Cody showing up once again, this time ready to confront Anakin about what he suspects to be treason because of Rex's message to him. We'll then continue with the first half of the Malevolence Mission as Anakin and Co. rescue Plo Koon and the 104th from General Grievous' clutches. The Republic's attack on the Malevolence will probably happen next chapter, but I might manage to fit it here. We'll see…

Note: Just so you guys know, I'll be taking another week-long break from writing to go on vacation with family, from the 2nd of August to the 8th, hence me uploading early. Also, I'll try to upload part 2 of this arc before I go, but I make no promises.

Now…without further ado…let's dive straight in!

Rescuing the Wolfpack! After the 104th Battalion is attacked by General Grievous and his new Separatist Super Weapon, a Starship capable of disabling entire fleets, Anakin, Ahsoka and the 501st set out on a daring mission to save them before it's too late. Meanwhile, sinister forces work against the Jedi as Grievous prepares to finish off the remains of General Koon's men, as well as himself. Will the Jedi be able to rescue their allies and stop the Separatist General, or is the Wolfpack about to be devoured by an even bigger beast?

Resolute, Bridge, Anakin's point of view:

Having left Rex and Ahsoka to their own devices in the training room and just having woken from a much needed nap, I walked my way to the Bridge with a feeling of calm and most importantly, a lack of fatigue I hadn't felt since before the Battle of Ryloth. The latter was of course my fault, since my bad habit of staying up all night to study battle reports and the urge to assist other Battalions however I could usually led me to writing a dozen of my own, filled with information regarding flora and fauna of planets the Republic was planning to deploy troops on, about enemy formation and how they should be countered, as well as general advice for staying one step ahead of the Separatist Tactical Droids that were plaguing the nightmares of the GAR's leaders, both Jedi Commanders and Navy officers alike.

Those transmissions usually received a response from the Battalion's or Fleet's commanding officer, who was under most circumstances –excluding Tarkin and Krell- expressing gratitude for the help, always stating that they appreciated any assistance they could get. While that was enough to give me a sense of satisfaction and peace of mind for having done the right thing and at least trying to save lives, it certainly didn't help my already nonexistent sleep schedule, and I had found myself relying on meditation to get the rest I needed in order to be combat-ready the next time the 501st was deployed somewhere.

Thankfully, I wouldn't have to worry about that particular issue for a while, with the exception of the troops stationed in Sector 12, a portion of Separatist Space containing two impregnable fortresses they called 'droid factories', as if they were anything but strongholds at this point in the War. The upcoming campaign on Felucia would be a problem, but not one I was willing –or able- to handle without a second set of eyes to help me figure out a strategy to ensure victory on that rotting hellhole of a Jungle, just so Obi Wan and I wouldn't have to go there for the second assault on the local Separatist Garrison.

Lost in thought, I didn't notice Admiral Yularen standing near the viewpoint and walked directly into the man, prompting me to apologize for not paying attention, forcing myself to forget the days where I would simply snap the neck of anyone who got in my way, even if it had been me –or rather, Darth Vader- who wasn't paying attention to my surroundings.

Yularen accepted the apology and was handed a cup of caf from a Clone who had walked in right behind me. The trooper didn't seem particularly happy about being sent out for minute errands such as this, but his grumpiness faded away as soon as Yularen handed me the caf with an understanding smile on his face.

"Long day, General?", he asked, his voice betraying no emotion. I of course knew he was concerned, but didn't acknowledge it for the sake of formalities, and since I didn't know the man well enough to joke around with him.

I let out an involuntary sigh, my mind drifting back to everything that had taken place in the last twenty four hours, from saving Hevy on Rishi to my conversation with Rex regarding Sidious just a few hours back. "You have no idea.", I muttered in response.

Yularen's smile was still full of sympathy as he activated his datapad and took a step back, handing it to me so I could inspect it. He seemed exasperated, an emotion I didn't know the cause of until I saw that the Jedi Council had just sent him a message, requesting my presence for a briefing. Right then and there, his mental fatigue made sense, since the Council had that effect on everyone not used to dealing with them on a daily basis, and even some of it's less serene members, Obi Wan included, though his promotion was –in their eyes- very recent, so they let his occasional eye rolls slide in favor of 'discussing more important matters', as if they ever did anything more than waste my time with needless talks of the same things, like the state of the War effort, something they should all be well aware of since they were leading the darn army!

Damning half of them to Hell under my breath, I tossed the datapad back to the Admiral and hasted to my quarters again, trying to find the notes I had written for recent or ongoing campaigns, hoping I could turn the discussion to something that wouldn't be another big waste of everyone's time.

By the time I had fished the aforementioned notes out of the ever-growing pile of battle reports and unrelated information regarding the War -ranging from Separatist and Republic news reels to self-made schematics of the B1 Battle Droid-, Windu had pinged me four times, causing me to nearly Force Crush my comm. in irritation. Taking a deep breath and mentally preparing myself to deal with the Council's stupidity, I answered his call and patched myself in to the meeting, only to notice that Sidious' holographic form was also there, standing alongside the Jedi Masters, of which only Obi Wan and Plo Koon were absent.

"Knight Skywalker.", greeted Windu, his tone cold and accusatory because of my delay, though I was unfazed by it, considering that the Emperor's greetings were a million times worse, even for a seasoned Dark Lord of the Sith like Vader was.

"Windu. Council.", I replied in a warm tone, flashing the lot a smile that would be perceived as apologetic by most of them, Sidious and Yoda excluded, of course. "I apologize for the delay, these battle reports are getting harder and harder to locate when you need them.", I added with a shrug, hoping they would just tell me what my next assignment was and let me leave to deal with it in peace.

"A disturbance in the Force, there has been.", Master Yoda's hologram stated, forcing Windu to stop glaring daggers at me for the time being. "Discovered a new Separatist Superweapon, the Chancellor's spies have. Called for an emergency meeting, he has.", Yoda said with the slightest, smallest possible malice in his voice as he emphasized Sidious' title.

Sidious, for his part, decided to act like he was actually worried, adding a small tremor to his voice as he spoke, to better sell the lie. "…It appears that General Grievous is in possession of a new Starship of some kind. I personally dispatched Master Koon to investigate, but we have received no report from him, which leads me to assume the worst…", Sidious said, the situation sounding vaguely familiar before a memory brought itself forward in my head as the name 'Malevolence' was whispered to me by the Force.

Shaking my head slightly and then proceeding to ignore the 'concerned' stare from Sidious, I lied about getting a vision from the Force and immediately turned my comm. off so the Council would be unable to disturb me while I did the actual work to salvage this mission.

It had been plan stupid of me to forget about the Malevolence and Master Koon's near death, something I would not allow due to him being a far more competent General than the majority of the Order, as well as his emotional importance to Ahsoka, since I recalled her regarding him as something of a father figure.

Of course, my foolishness didn't really matter at the moment, as I was dashing through the Resolute's Halls to find Ahsoka and get to the Twilight in time to save the Jedi Master and his men -Sinker and Boost, I remembered-. Unfortunately, I failed to notice Cody coming with towards me in the state I was in, resulting in both of us crashing onto the floor in a most undignified manner, not that I had time to care about such things.

Using the Force to propel myself in the air and onto my feet, I quickly asked Cody where Ahsoka was, to which he responded that he didn't know. Pressed for time as I was, I couldn't afford to go looking for her, so I sent her a mental apology before rushing to the hangar, Cody following me with equal haste. Had this not been a life-or-death situation, I would have complemented him for his speed, but I didn't have time to waste.

Barging in the Hangar I found the Twilight right where I had left it, a mental message from Revan telling me that the technicians had refueled it as per my request, I spotted Oddball still in his flight suit, most likely having just come out of the simulator three corridors down.

Not knowing what else to do and having a metaphorical clock ticking with every second I wasted, I yelled at the Clone Pilot, getting his –and everyone else's- attention.

"Oddball!", I shouted to him, causing the pilot to turn and face me.

He was surprised by me running to him at top speed, but I didn't give him time to initiate conversation, instead barking out orders for him to follow. "To the Twilight, now! Master Koon and his men are in trouble, we have to go!", I yelled, and he –having been trained to instantly react to orders his whole life- immediately obeyed, speeding towards the ship alongside me.

By the time I noticed Cody, who had climbed in the cockpit with us, Oddball had already put in the co-ordinates I told him to, and I had sent Obi Wan a message through our bond for him to call Yularen and explain the situation as best he could.

"Sir! I…I need to talk to you!", Cody said, stopping mid-sentence to take a breath, clearly tired from running after me, a Jedi using Force Speed, for several minutes in a row.

I didn't want to ignore him, but it would have to wait until we were in hyperspace. Without sparing him a glance, I guided Oddball out of the hangar as I used the Force to move the ship without the use of thrusters, simply telling him to get us in hyperspace immediately, which he did barely a few seconds after.

As the vacuum of space around us warped into the intangible mess it always did when a ship entered hyperspace, I finally allowed myself a moment of respite, and promptly collapsed into the Co-Pilot's chair, breathing heavily from a combination of exhaustion and the sense of alieved panic.

"General?", Oddball spoke up, slightly hesitating. "Forgive me for asking, but…what the heck just happened?", he inquired, trying and failing to shout the latter part of his question.

"What he said.", Cody deadpanned with a nod of the helmet.

Taking another deep breath to stop my rapidly beating heart, I cleared my throat, composing myself before forming a response. "That…was me in a panic, gentlemen.", I replied, prompting Cody to chuckle at the joke.

Shaking my head, I rephrased my sentence to actually answer my pilot's question. "General Koon is in trouble. I just got off a meeting with the Council and they were discussing a new Separatist Superweapon. A Starship equipped with the largest Ion Cannon ever made, capable of crippling entire fleets in seconds. The Chancellor dispatched the 104th to investigate, but didn't hear back from them at all, leading all of us to fear the worst. Their last known location was the Abregado System and we're going to mount a rescue mission.", I told the two Clones, sounding more like I was reciting a Battle Report than actually making conversation.

Oddball tilted his head at my response. "Why only us, sir? What about the fleet?", he questioned in a low voice, as if unsure of his right to speak up. I had been trying to assure my men that speaking up during briefings –or at all- was never an issue, but Oddball was one of the last few who hadn't quite familiarized themselves with this mentality, so I was proud of him doing so in the first place.

"Well…this was an impromptu mission and I didn't have time to plan it in the slightest. Besides, the sheer size of the fleet would make it a prime target for the Ion Cannon, while the Twilight's speed and agility will help make sure we grab the survivors of the attack and return to the Republic alive.", I responded quickly, knowing I sounded less sure of myself than normal, because I actually was a bit nervous. Master Koon would later be one of Ahsoka's only supporters if her trial happened again, and having that contingency in case I failed to stop the bombing would be a good way to ensure Sidious couldn't get Snips out of the way if her presence ever became an inconvenience for him.

"Glad you've taken the time to think this through General.", Cody said while crossing his arms, his voice dripping more sarcasm than even Obi Wan's when he was with politicians, a sign that he was pissed with me.

Not wanting to argue with Cody in front of Oddball, I waved for the Commander to get up from his seat behind the pilot and follow me to the only other 'room' in the ship, the cargo hold.

As soon as Cody entered, he leaned against the wall and crossed his arms again, as I gave him an inquisitive look, prompting him to stand straight and clear his throat, betraying the anxiety that was clouding his mind.

The fact that he was nervous about something at all, let alone outside of a battlefield, was concerning, since Cody just…wasn't like that as far as I knew. "Cody…is something the matter?", I prodded gently, sounding a lot like Obi Wan when he was comforting me after a particularly bad day of being taunted by the other initiates at the Temple as I did so.

The Clone Commander let out a small chuckle before clearing his throat, clearly still nervous about telling whatever he wanted to say. "I…I wanted to apologize. I'm not sure if Rex told you, but I made some pretty wrong assumptions regarding your- your allegiance, sir. General Kenobi cleared things up for me, but I shouldn't have slandered you like that, especially in front of someone who holds you in very high regard.", Cody said, his voice cracking a little as he talked, and my mind went back to Rex and how he had mentioned something about this before we had gone to see Ahsoka.

I nearly burst out laughing at this, since I now knew it had been Cody who first noticed all the strange happenings in my immediate proximity. He just didn't have the knowledge of Darth Vader's existence –and I thanked the Force for that-, so he had reached the wrong conclusion.

"Sir? Is something I said funny?", he asked suddenly, with genuine confusion. I was barely containing my laughter at that point, but I still had enough self-control to respond before losing it entirely.

"No, Cody. It's just…" A chuckle. "You actually thought I was a Separatist!", I concluded my sentence and promptly erupted into a laughing fit, with Cody joining in as soon as he processed my response.

I didn't notice Oddball peeking his head through the cockpit door and neither of us realized that he was also chuckling at what he –as Revan would later reveal- thought to be improbable and our trip through hyperspace was uneventful after that, as it only consisted of pleasant chatter between the three of us, mostly revolving around ships, with Oddball being more than happy to share his love for flying with someone who didn't just see it as a job or duty, and Cody all too eager to try and impress Obi Wan with this knowledge later.

When we existed hyperspace, the first thing that showed up on our scanners –besides the Malevolence itself- was a Pod Hunter, a contraption manned by two B1 Battle Droids that were destroying the escape pods of the crew that managed to get off the now decimated fleet before Grievous had annihilated it entirely.

One quick Force Crush later, the Pod Hunter was laying in ruin and Master Koon, as well as two surviving members of the Wolfpack besides Commander Wolffe who I recalled were Booster and Sinker, had boarded the Twilight before we narrowly dodged a blast from the flagship's Ion Cannon.

Angered by the death and destruction Grievous had once again reeked among our ranks, I focused on the hate I felt for the villainous cyborg and showered his ship with Force Lightning, causing many dent marks and even a few small fires to appear on the hull. If the Clones were anything but impressed by this, I couldn't detect it through the Force, since it was instantly masked by Master Koon's immediate surprise and utter disbelief at what he was seeing, but were already in hyperspace before he could so much as take a second glance at the heavily damaged cruiser.

In his shock, the Jedi Master missed by golden eyes, now glowing an intense yellow as I desperately tried to regain control of my emotions before Master Koon snapped out of his stunned state and noticed the 'taint' of the Dark Side on me. It took a few minutes, during which Booster guided a speechless Plo to the chair behind mine and strapped him in, and Cody hesitantly asked if I was alright after taking note of my slow, heavy breathing, but I quickly waved him off, giving him a smile and making my eyes glow a light blue to emphasize my point.

When the Kel Dor Jedi finally snapped out of his state –or decided to finally move, I wasn't sure which-, the Twilight was already entering the Resolute's Hangar, and while I didn't expect to be greeted by a welcoming committee of any kind, but an angry Padawan and an exasperated Obi Wan were somehow worse than I could have ever imagined in that moment.

As Coric and the other medics -who Rex had allegedly called in, though he wouldn't admit it- arrived at the Hangar to take the members of the 104th away to make sure they weren't suffering any injuries, Ahsoka bombarded me with questions as to why I hadn't told her about the mission and why I hadn't told her to come along, it was Cody who stepped in to defend me, flashing me a smile from underneath his helmet as Obi Wan practically dragged me away, before demanding to know why his Commander had nearly unveiled our whole plan.

Thankfully for my ears, who were being yelled at rather loudly, I quickly managed to distract him by reminding my brother about the Malevolence and quickly briefing him about our daring rescue of Master Koon, causing him to sigh. "Anakin, please don't tell me you destroyed an entire flagship with the Force?", Obi Wan asked, tired of having to cover for me, as he would later complain about.

Not being in the mood to get yelled at again, I was quick to reassure him that I had not in fact destroyed an entire flagship with a Force Storm. "Uh…no? I mean, it didn't blow up! I promise!", I tried to defend myself, but Obi Wan wasn't having it.

"Anakin!", he shouted at me. "You do realize that Master Plo saw you do that, yes? A member of the Jedi High Council saw you use a Sith ability in battle!", Obi Wan continued, but even through all of his complaining, I noticed that something was out of place. He was putting too much emphasis on current events, something that was more akin to his behavior prior to the Purges, but this sort of reprimand was nothing like our usual talks regarding this topic.

I narrowed my eyes at him, staring at him inquisitively as he tried to maintain eye contact. A few seconds later, Obi Wan relented, his gaze shifting to look at the floor before he sat down on my bed, with me quickly mimicking the action. It was clear that something was bothering him, and I wasn't going to let him deal with it alone. Not after everything we've been through together.

Taking a deep breath, I did my best to mimic his tone of voice from when I was the angry one, as a kid, and he was trying to comfort me, hoping it would at least do something. "Is something the matter?", I asked him gently, the way he had done many times in a different life, a long time ago.

Obi Wan then proceeded to bury his face in my shoulder and I did my best to hug him without moving much, not wanting to disturb him. A few moments, no, minutes of silence passed before he dropped the final wall of defense, and told me what was on his mind.

"Anakin…", he muttered, voice shaking. "It's Siri. She… she's been killed."

And…scene! I am so NOT sorry for this cliffhanger! Bet all of you thought this was a filler chapter, setting up for the fight between Obi Wan, Anakin and Grievous in the next chapter where they'd go destroy the Malevolence didn't you? That this one would just be totally uneventful, with a bit of character interaction and world building stuffed in for good measure huh? Well…you were WRONG!

Yeah, sure, I'm being mean, but everything will be explained in the next chapter I promise. There absolutely is a reason for this, and may I just say that killing a character off screen is not my style? Like, you've all noticed that I'm not the type of author to do that right? I certainly like drama, but I hold myself to a higher standard than such lazy writing. So…maybe she lives? You'll have to wait to find out.

In all seriousness, I actually did want to do all those things, but the sudden cliffhanger was just the evilest thing I can do at this point in the story! Even though I deliberately made it as uneventful and "filler-like" as possible, I hope this chapter was still enjoyable despite my efforts to make it mundane.

ANYWAYS! Onto our regularly scheduled exposition for today, so I can go write the next chapter in hopes of not making you guys wait too long (it'll probably be up in a few days, I certainly won't make you wait until I'm back from vacation I promise you guys that)!

Firstly, Anakin. Up until now, I've done my best to show how Anakin is as a General and the kind of messes he gets himself into while on the field, but I haven't really shown him planning or doing something other than just fighting in the War to help the Republic, so this chapter was a way of doing that. Note that while he neglects his own health to write Battle Reports and help other Jedi and Officers, he does so not to give the Republic an edge, but to save as many as possible from dying on the front.

It's even mentioned that he sends at least one such document to Tarkin and Krell, though they are both ignored since the first is too by-the-book to try any unorthodox strategies Anakin may propose, and the second is too proud to take advice from anyone and doesn't even care about saving his men to begin with, so he has no reason to accept help from the Chosen One. In conclusion, he's not staying idle and is using his knowledge and analytical skills developed while he was Vader to help others instead of doing harm or nothing at all, something that Anakin from before ROTS always had as a goal. To "save everyone" if you will, something he was constantly told he couldn't do. He's at least trying though, so that certainly is something.

Secondly, the Jedi Council. This…is a complicated topic, mainly because of Anakin's feelings towards the Council as a whole and his thoughts on them as individuals being in conflict with each other more often than not.

Let's start with that first bit. Anakin believes the Council to be a lot of things, annoying and inefficient, incompetent, downright foolish and insufferable being only a few of the adjectives he'd use to describe them. To him, these are the people who allowed the Sith to grow their power and eventually dominate the Republic without much of a fight. They are the ones who were blinded by their own dogma and often preferred to play politics rather than help the people of the Galaxy. They are the ones who saw nothing wrong with sending a sixteen year old into a sex-trafficking mission on Zygerria and expelled Ahsoka without a second thought, essentially throwing her to the hounds that the Republic Senate consisted of and they are the ones who failed to stop Sidious when it was their job to do so.

On the other hand, he knows some of them personally and understands that they are trying to do the right thing. He admired Master Yaddle before her untimely demise and fondly remembers some members he had gone on missions with as being good people and great Generals. He knows that Shaak Ti tried to help Fives when he discovered the inhibitor chips, and that she couldn't have possibly known that Palpatine was Sidious and he recalls Ahsoka telling him about how Plo Koon is like a father to her, something he makes a reference to in this chapter.

All in all, this where the line "Damning half of them to Hell under my breath, I tossed the datapad back to the Admiral and hasted to my quarters again…" comes into play. Notice that he specifically says "half" here, as in, not the entire Council. It's subtle, but shows that he understands that not all of them are at fault for everything that happened and that he knows that at least some are good people, the rest he either doesn't have an opinion on or heavily dislikes.

Thirdly, Oddball. He actually made a cameo in ROTS during the first few minutes of the movie, where Anakin calls on him through Comm. and I thought that I should give him a bit of time to shine, since Clone Wars didn't…like at all. He doesn't have much significance story-wise, but he seemed like a cool character to me so I wanted him to be there, and what better way to do that than having a panicking Anakin Skywalker practically drag him onto a ship to go rescue some Jedi Master from a Separatist Superweapon manned by General Grievous himself? Talk about ruining the guy's downtime…

Fourthly, Anakin's Force Storm. This moment is very important, because it's the first time we've seen Anakin deliberately using the Dark Side as a weapon since the ending of Book 1. It's the first time he's using it on purpose, or rather, is choosing to use it against his enemies, and not as a last resort, resulting in heavy damage being done to a (according to the official Clone Wars Wiki) 4.8 kilometer Flagship, so you can guess how much damage it would do if used in-atmosphere or even worse, on a planet like say…Coruscant, for example.

The reference to his glowing yellow eyes right after he's done is no coincidence either, since I made sure to mention how he focuses on his hate for Grievous, as Vader would do for his hate towards the Emperor in order to empower himself in the Dark Side. It actually takes a bit of time for Anakin to recover from the Dark Side's influence after he's used it, which definitely shows that it's affecting him in some way.

Fifthly, Obi Wan. Obi Wan is…an interesting case at the moment. There's actually some very subtle hints that something is up with him throughout this chapter, though I admit that I wasn't the one writing them there, I probably wouldn't have caught them myself.

For example, Obi Wan is not someone to miss a Council meeting for anything at all and even if he was speaking with Cody at the time, remember that Anakin is only patched in for a few minutes at most before he leaves to search for Ahsoka, causing him to bump into the Commander, which, while it could be a coincidence, doesn't really give Cody the time to have just now finished talking with Obi Wan and having already begun searching for Anakin before bumping into him in the corridor.

Another time is near the end of the chapter where Obi Wan drags Anakin off and proceeds to yell at him, something that is completely out of character for him. Sure, pre-Order 66 Obi Wan might have acted that way if he saw his Padawan using a Force Storm, but post-ROTS Kenobi would never do that kind of thing, especially with the development he's had in the story so far. He'd probably be exasperated sure, but full-on yelling is not something he'd do.

Also, he is a character that always prefers to avoid opening up to anyone about his worries by any and all means necessary, meaning that he'd be very likely to have bottled up his feelings regarding the news of Siri's "death" (putting that in brackets since I haven't shown her be dead on screen) and simply was unable to stop himself from going off at Anakin when he had probably just wanted to have a conversation with him about the matter at hand or brainstorm ideas of what could be done regarding Plo having seen the Force Storm.

Unfortunately for Anakin's ears however, Obi Wan explodes at him, resulting in the scene we've all witnessed. We will actually be getting Obi Wan's POV to this chapter in the upcoming one, since I'm not just going to drop the "Siri is dead" bomb on you without at least giving some sort of explanation as to what happened.

Lastly, Siri herself. There is a lot that is going to happen because of this plot point right after the Malevolence Arc is finished, which should just take one more chapter, so that won't be an issue. I already know exactly what I'm going to be doing once the gang gets back on Coruscant and I'm only going to say that we're getting the first Revan fight in the whole book and if my drafts are anything to go by, it's going to be amazing! Sorry, I'm getting off track here. I can't really say much more about Siri until this Arc is done, but just know that it won't be something you expect. I'm not letting Siri x Obi Wan die that easily!

Next time: As Sinister Forces work to undermine the Jedi and the Republic's rate of victories in the Clone War, General Grievous attacks a Republic Medical Station hoping to murder all the wounded Clones residing inside. It's a race against time with thousands of lives on the line, but will the Jedi be able to stop the sinister Grievous, or are these brave heroes one wrong step away from death's door?

That's all for now everyone! Reviews are always welcome, whether it be to ask question or to chat, and I'll see you all next chapter, but until then, May the Force be with you!
