Cragen walked out into the squad room and told Liv and Elliot that they had a victim at Mercy General hospital. The victim was abused by her mother and she ran; she had multiple bruises and fractures. Some of the bruises were fresh, some of the others were fairly new and one of the fractures didn't heel right. They walk out of the hospital. The girl was 8 and her name is Harper Riley. Jessica Riley was raped when she was in college and Harper was the product of that. Jessica turned to drugs to help deal with the pain that was caused. Harper looked so much like her dad and Jessica only saw her rapist when she looked at Harper.
This case hit close to home for Liv because she knew what it was like to be abused by a parent. But not only that but she knew what it was like for a mother to resent their child because of a situation that was out of her control. At that moment all she wanted was to go home and cry because no child should have to experience that. Elliot could tell this case was getting to her. Liv is a tough person but everyone has a breaking point. Elliot asked her if she wanted to come back to his place for dinner and a nightcap.
On the way back to his apartment they talked about everything other than the case. "Are you going to try to see the kids since this is the first weekend in forever that we were not on call" Liv asked "Yeah, I'm going to go and get the kids friday and me and lizzie are going to the mall. Lord help me we are going to be there all day long." ''Aw that's sweet she will love getting to spend time with her dad one on one." He was nervous to ask her to go to dinner with him and his children. He ultimately decided that he wanted to wait until they got back to his apartment .
They get to the apartment and they decide to order a pizza with everything on it and grab a beer and turn on the Rangers game. They both settled down on the couch. He approached the topic of their case lightly. She told him that one of her biggest fears is becoming her mother. They sat quietly watching the game until he whispered " you aren't your mother and you will never be." She looked at him like it showed him some comfort. But still ultimately didn't believe him; she knew there was some truth in what he was saying.
Compared to her mother they weren't alike; she would never lay a hand on her child. She would never drink herself to death although she knew why her mother did these things she still resented her a bit. He tilted his head toward her and she did the same and leaned in and they tentatively touched lips. She pulled back quickly and stared at him; he leaned back and she leaned back into her and they kissed more passionately.
When both of them were out of breath they both hesitantly pulled back. She looked down and whispered to herself "I kissed a married man" He put both hands on her face and tilted it up "I don't regret that and I'm getting divorced please don't think that this is wrong." She had a tear in her eye "I don't regret that because I have wanted that forever, but I should because this is wrong you're still legally married"."You shouldn't, I promise Liv we have been partners for 9 years liv we have been through so much shit in these 9 years. I understand that you think that I'm going back to Kathy and that is the farthest thing from the truth. It isn't healthy for our kids if we were to stay in a relationship." Liv looks at him lost for words.
All she could think is that they were getting divorced because of her and the guilt was eating her up. Though she knows that she shouldn't feel guilty she didn't do anything wrong. "What's going through your head Liv" "nothing" "That's bullshit I know when you're lying liv" She sighed and rolled her eyes " I can't help but feel like I broke up your marriage." He looked at her bewildered. "What would make you say that?You're the reason that Kathy forgave me for some of the stuff I did." She looked up at him. His eyes portrayed something that only she could understand.
She leaned into him and they cuddled on the couch having a wordless conversation. They ended up falling asleep on the couch and they woke up in the morning. Elliot was the first person awake; he was getting his barring and then realized that there was a heavyweight on his chest. He looked down and realized it was just liv. He sighed and thought to himself "I could get used to this."
