Monday morning came around and neither of us had brought up the vulnerability of our shared night after Narcissa left and it was nice to get back into work. We had made significant progress and were ready to share the results with Harry.
"Do you have everything?" I asked Draco while I looked at my watch. "Harry is expecting us in ten."
Draco flipped through a stack of papers. "I've got it all. Looks like we're ready to go."
We headed down the hallway to the conference room we would be using and began to set up the complicated web our research had formed. Harry arrived a few minutes later.
He whistled through his teeth as he took in our work. "This looks complicated. Run me through it."
I motioned for Draco to take the lead. "I have inside knowledge of many of the Lestrange properties located throughout France and Italy. They have all been raided at some point and come up empty, but there is one in France that I suspect he has gone back to based on sightings and activity. There seems to be surges of crime and we can follow the trail here," Draco pointed to the red line that connected all our research. "And it just keeps leading us back to this area."
Harry nodded along. "You two have done excellent work. I actually just got a credible tip this morning that backs up that research." He slid a file in our direction and Draco and I leaned into each other to read it. "There is a charity event coming up that's being thrown by a big name in France. There are expected to have all the elite names in the area there, many of which have unsavory pasts. There is a good chance Lestrange will be there under some type of disguise."
I looked up from the file. "Do we have any idea as to what his goal is in attending this event?"
Harry looked at me seriously. "It seems a lot of those that weren't direct followers of Voldemort but also weren't happy with the outcome of the war fled to France. They've been under the radar for the most part, but if someone is willing to stir things up, there will be followers there. I think that person is Lestrange and if we can infiltrate this event, we can prevent the beginnings of another war."
Draco and I looked at each other. Harry didn't need to tell us the serious implications if we didn't stop this.
I looked to my best friend. "Harry, we need to be there."
He smiled. "I was hoping you'd say that. I've got approval for you both to go undercover to the event. This effects more than just wizarding London. I've been in contact with both the French and the Italian ministries. They agree that the last thing we want is another war. There is a couple in Italy." He shuffled through his papers. "Giovanni and Bianca Russo. They keep to themselves mostly and aren't seen in public often, but they have agreed to accept the invitation and provide samples for polyjuice potion. They've just been married recently. Our plan is for you to appear as the couple. You wouldn't need to draw attention to yourselves as they have a history of being private so it wouldn't be suspicious if you're just asking a few low-key questions to get intelligence. Mostly you'll be there to see if you can identify Lestrange and overhear any conversations that may be had. You'll be there the rest of the week as the events start tomorrow for out-of-town guests. Are you two willing to accept the mission?"
There was no hesitation. "Yes." We said in unison.
"I knew I could count on the two of you. Here's the information on your port key and the vials of polyjuice. You'll be staying at a resort owned by the host. There's a restaurant on site and I expect there to be some additional meetings to prior to the gala held there."
"We've got this Harry. You can count on us." I say confidently.
"I wouldn't trust another couple, Hermione. You both know the implications all too well if this doesn't go as we need it to." A heaviness settled in the air around us. Yes. We all knew what could happen if this was left to fester. "Gather your things and you two will head home early today to pack. I have the appropriate clothing being sent to the resort for you both, so you shouldn't have much to do, but you can't arrive empty handed."
Stacking our papers, we prepared to leave. Harry turned back. "Hey, just," he hesitated. "Be careful. This might seem like a straight forward mission, but it has potential to blow up. Lay low, get the intel, and get back here in one piece so we can make some arrests. Yeah?"
"Didn't know you cared so much, Potter." Draco smirked and Harry rolled his eyes.
"I love you too Harry. We'll be careful." I wrapped my arms around him in a quick hug. "We'll be back in no time with the information we need. Promise."
"You're my two best aurors. I have no doubt you will get it done."
We gave a quick nod and headed back to our office. Draco closed the door and locked it before coming over to me and pulling me in for a hug.
"I know we usually keep our distance at the office, but I just want to make sure you're ok with all this."
I pulled back slightly; a bit annoyed that he would even ask. "It's my job, Draco. This isn't the first time I've gone undercover and I doubt it will be the last."
He cupped my cheeks in his hands and brought my eyes to his. I saw the concern swimming in them. "I'm not doubting your abilities even an ounce. I would be a daft idiot to do so. It's not that, it's that this is the husband of Bellatrix Lestrange. There is history there. I'm not speaking as your partner right now, but as your boyfriend. Are you ok with this mission?"
My heart melted a bit at his concern. I knew well by this point that his emotional scars over that night at the manor ran deep.
"I appreciate the concern, Draco. I'll be fine. Honestly, I think taking down this arsehole will be quite satisfying." I hesitated. "How about you? It's your uncle after all and there is so much history there."
Draco didn't miss a beat. "I'm fine. Let's stop this before it's a problem."
I agreed whole heartedly.
It only took a few minutes for us to gather our necessary things from our office before heading over to gather all the necessary supplies we might need. Before long, we were headed home to pack.
Just over an hour later, Draco was knocking at my door.
"Ready?"
I ran through my mental checklist one more time as he followed me into my sitting room. "Yes, I think so."
After warding the house from the inside, Draco and I drank down the polyjuice potion.
The feeling of changing from polyjuice is not something I'll ever get used to. My features morphed as I grew several inches both in height and in my chest. My skin turned olive and my hair lengthened significantly. It was a big change for me. I'm not vain, but I was still happy to see that the woman in the mirror was good looking.
Draco changed as well. He now sported black hair in a sleek, combed appearance, tanned skin and his features became less sharp. Where I had grown, he shrunk an inch or two from his tall frame. His musculature was much the same, but there was a still a difference in his stature that made it clear he was someone different.
His nose turned up as he looked at me. "I'll be happy when this is over. I know it's you on the inside, but the outside makes it a little weird."
"Yeah, I know what you mean. Never thought I would miss your hair and pointy face."
He nudged me knowing I was giving him a hard time. "We only have a minute, here."
He handed me the other end of a rusty nail from his pocket. Just a few seconds later, it activated and I felt that awful pulling sensation as we were transported to the correct destination outside the resort.
Draco put his arm lovingly around my shoulders and I leaned into him a bit as we walked up to the counter.
"Hello and welcome. How can I assist you today?"
"Yes, I've booked the honeymoon suite. Last name Russo." Draco said in a flawless Italian accent.
The man's face brightened. "Oh yes. Mr. And Mrs. Russo, we've been expecting you. Your items arrived just a few minutes ago and we've already brought them to your room."
We were escorted to the top floor where there were few rooms. When he opened the door to our suite, I could see why. It was gorgeous and must have taken up half the floor.
"Please hand me your wands and I will register your signatures to the lock. Only you will be able to get into the room for the duration of your stay. If you would like housekeeping to tidy up, simply notify us at the front desk and we will send someone up right away. Is there anything else I can get you?"
Draco slipped the man a tip and we were left alone in the vast room.
