We spent the majority of our remaining time off wrapped up in each other. It was weird, but for the first time in my life being around someone nonstop didn't bother me. We were learning more and more about each other and he was even teaching me to play his guitar a bit which I found I rather enjoyed.
We did make time for lunch with his mother as she had requested. I was worried it would be terribly awkward after the way she found us, but she never once brought up our lack of dress. She did, however, drop a bombshell of a statement as we enjoyed some tea in the gardens.
"Have you given any thought to when the wedding will be?" She had asked casually as she delicately sipped from her finest china.
I was nowhere near as proper as I nearly spit my tea in her face. Thankfully, I managed to control myself and just choke a little instead.
Draco had assured her. "Mum, it's still rather early in our relationship. I promise that if I propose you'll be one of the first to know."
She gave us a sly smile and a response about how we've been together a perfectly adequate amount of time by wizarding standards to announce an engagement, but left it at that.
I couldn't help myself but to bring up the topic when we returned to Draco's home that night. "Is marriage something you would like?"
After his disaster of a relationship before, it's possible that he was put off by the whole idea.
"Of course. If you'd marry me today, I'd take us down to the Ministry right now." He saw the look of horror on my face and laughed. "Don't worry, love. I'm in no rush. I just have no doubts about us. It's as if we were made for each other. I'm on your timeline though. When it seems like you're ready, then I'm in."
I raised my eyebrows at him. "Just to be clear. What's your position on children?"
Here he hesitated a bit. "I won't lie. The thought of kids terrifies me. I obviously had a pretty awful childhood myself. However, I do want a chance to be a father and have the chance to officially break the cycle in my family. I want to be a positive and encouraging influence."
My heart melted. I knew that Draco would be an amazing father. "And your expectations of me as a mother?" This had been a hot topic with Ron and it was better to get it out now.
"Is no different than the expectations of me as a father. We'll be a team and share the responsibility equally."
"So, you don't expect me to give up my career and become socialite that stays home to raise our children and organize fundraisers?"
He had the audacity to laugh out loud at that. "I could never picture you as that type of wife and mother. I mean, if you wanted to do that, that's fine of course. But I would never make those decisions for you."
I relaxed a bit. I wasn't ready for marriage, but it was good to have it all laid out on the table so we knew what to expect from each other. This way there wouldn't be any surprises later down the line when we were ready.
"That's all I needed to know. Come on." I took his hand.
"Where are we going?"
"To bed of course."
When we finally went back to work, it was nice not to have to hide completely. Draco and I arrived together and received many congratulations. Most people told us they had no idea which made me happy. It proved that we could remain professional despite our relationship which is what I had hoped to achieve by not telling people right away.
Harry knocked on our door shortly after our arrival and tossed something on my desk.
"Not sure if you two have seen the Prophet today yet. There is a write up on the Lestrange case you may want to see."
I picked up the paper and Draco came to read over my shoulder.
Famed Death Eater Rodolphus Lestrange Arrested
It has come to our attention that over the weekend Rodoluphus Lestrange was arrested in France. Lestrange has been on the run since the fall of Voldemort and was one of the last remaining Death Eaters on the loose from the so called "inner circle."
Our sources inform us that while Lestrange was already wanted for war crimes, he has added to his list of crimes by trying to form another pureblood society with the intent to harm those of half-blood, muggle born, and muggle descent. Lestrange was arrested along with several others after Aurors confirmed his plan and those involved.
We have learned that the Aurors responsible for his capture are none other than Golden Girl Hermione Granger and former Death Eater himself, Draco Malfoy. The pair have been partnered for over a year now and Head Auror Harry Potter has referred to them as his dream team. He credits their ability to work well together and assess situations quickly along with their skills from the war for their lengthy success record.
We at the Daily Prophet wonder if there could be more to the story. It's rumored that the pair went undercover as a married couple in order to procure the arrest. That task may have been less of a stretch than for other partnered aurors as it has since been revealed that the duo is in fact in a romantic relationship.
More on both stories to follow as information becomes available.
"Lovely." I threw down the paper.
"At least they didn't have too much to say about us. We will just have to be aware that they may be around lurking for a story." Draco added.
"Agreed." Said Harry. "Which is why I wanted you both to be aware. They want dirt on both your personal and professional lives, so just be careful about what's said in public."
We agreed and Harry left us to it. There was plenty to wrap up in preparation for the new trial and from being gone the last several days.
"Remind me again why we let Harry talk us into that time off?" I asked as my eyes roamed over our inbox, which was finely nearly empty, shortly after seven.
"Because we had worked nonstop for an entire week. It's really not that bad. We are just about caught up. Just in time to be dumped on again in the morning."
I sighed. He was right. It would take us a couple days to get truly caught up.
"I've had it for tonight. Want to go grab dinner?"
His stomach chose that moment to growl. "I suppose that wouldn't be a bad idea. How about we go to your place tonight? I'll pick up something from that new restaurant in Diagon Alley and meet you there?"
I nodded. "That sounds good. I haven't been home much the last two weeks and I have a few things to take care of." I didn't want to admit that my laundry situation was getting a bit out of control. Call me old fashioned, but I still liked to do it the muggle way. "Why don't you stop at your place and grab a few things in case you stay over too."
Draco smiled cheekily. "Such assumptions Ms. Granger. I like it." He gave me a brief, but delightful kiss. "I'll see you soon, darling."
