The Choice We Make
Chapter 6
Levi stood in front of a mirror, Erwin right behind him, adjusting his tie. When he had the plum-colored tie tied correctly, he moved on to adjust and readjust his gray suit. Erwin said after a moment, "stop, you look great."
Levi huffed a bit and asked, "Are you sure? I feel like something's not right here."
Just at that moment, the door burst open, revealing Hanji with a little plastic box. She squealed when she saw Levi and ran to give him a hug. Erwin stopped her right in time, knowing Levi would never stop fidgeting if she wrinkled his suit.
Instead of hugging him, Hanji held out the plastic box. Inside was a boutonniere in the colors Eren had chosen for their wedding: dark plum and dusty blue with a hint of lilac. The colors complimented each other well, but that's to be expected from an artist. Hanji was given permission to help Levi pin the flowers to his lapel.
With the flowers in place, Levi looked in the mirror one more time, then at the clock. It was almost time. Hanji excused herself from the room, Erwin close behind.
Levi had a moment to himself to really consider what he was about to do. He had no doubts that it was what he wanted. He had always wanted to marry eventually, but when he met Eren and fell in love with him, that desire tripled. Eren had been the one from the moment of their first kiss, and he knew they both knew it, but he was also glad they had waited this long.
They had now lived together for over a year, had argued over just about everything they could possibly argue over, and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Especially during their time apart when Eren was living in the dorms, and Levi at home. They knew their relationship would weather any storm, and Levi couldn't have asked for better than Eren.
He was nervous to walk down that aisle and say his vows, but he also knew that even if he royally screwed up, Eren would still love him forever, and he would still walk away from today married to his green-eyed brat.
With that thought in mind, Levi straightened up and went to join the others in the garden and greet a few people before the wedding began. He was immediately approached by Petra and Oluo. Petra really looked amazing in a knee-length, cream-colored dress with a peach sash tied around the waist, and Levi said so.
Petra thanked him, then moved on to Levi. "I'm so excited for you! I knew he was the one the second I met him. I'm so happy things are finally working out for you. Good luck. I know this will turn out great."
Petra then moved on after pulling Levi in for a crushing hug. He spotted Kenny and Nanaba walk in and decided he needed to work up to that encounter for a moment, so went to talk to Eric, who was standing with Cory near the wall and the door they would have to go through in just a moment. They would be walking down the aisle before Eren. They would have to leave in a few moments, so Levi decided it would be a good time to join them.
He stood quietly next to Eric, and they both watched Kenny interact pleasantly with everyone, even introducing himself to some of Eren's family. Nanaba stayed close the whole time, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. He did, however, call one of the two security guards over to point Kenny out and warn them that if he started to say or do anything that wasn't appropriate -and they could use their own discretion- to send him packing. He wasn't willing to risk his own wedding day for Kenny, dying or not.
A few minutes later, he and Eric were ushered inside where they were to line up to walk down the aisle. He had chosen Grandma Ella to walk with him down the aisle. She had become like a parent to him, and he loved her very much. She joined him at the front of the line.
When Levi looked down the line, seeing all of the people he and Eren cared about, he didn't see the one he cared about most, but figured that was on purpose. They would probably have Eren hidden away until the very last second. It was bad luck for the grooms to see each other before the wedding.
Music started outside. Piano music that Levi had written specially for the occasion. Their very own, unique wedding march. The door opened and Levi had to squint for a moment in the bright light, then he and Ella linked arms and they walked down the aisle.
At the end, Ella gave Levi a big hug and left him to take her seat. Levi turned to watch the rest of the procession file down the aisle, starting with Erwin, and ending with Mikasa walking alone in her plum dress. Eren's maid of honor.
Then the music changed, right on cue. Eren stepped into the light right as the music changed to something even more beautiful, just as he had intended. Only the best for the man he loved. Levi had to take a deep breath when he spotted Eren. Somehow, someone had tamed his hair to the best of their abilities, and in order to do so they had put a short French braid down one side of his hair, disappearing behind his ear.
Yesterday, Eren's hair had been long, just past his shoulders, and he kept it up in a bun. Levi had grown to like Eren's hair, but he was pleased to see that he had done as requested and cut it for the wedding. It looked very nice. He wore a tan suit with a dusty-blue tie and a boutonniere just like his. To top it all off, Eren was positively glowing with excitement as his mother, wearing a blue dress, walked with him down the aisle.
It looked like Eren was impatient as usual, and Carla seemed to be holding Eren back and making him walk to the beat of the music. When they did finally reach Levi, Carla gave Levi Eren's hand and looked at Levi. She didn't have to say anything. Levi already knew what she wanted. He nodded his head once and Carla left to take her seat.
Levi took Eren the last few steps to the officiator, and the ceremony began when the music stopped. He gave a little speech and talked about marriage and what it represents. Then he moved on to something new. "Now, before you take your vows and I pronounce you married partners, I want to ask you to do one more thing. Your wedding day is one that seems to fly. It's filled with dances, rings, vows, I do's and I love you's. Many remember how fleeting their own wedding day was. So, I want you to take a few seconds and look into each other's eyes. Really let it sink into your mind and your heart. Now, I want you to think about your life together in twenty years from now. Where are you? What are you doing? We all know that your visions of the future are not identical, but always complimentary. John Lennon once said, 'a dream you dream alone is only a dream, a dream you dream together, that is reality.' That new reality starts now."
Eren laughed a little and Levi could see the tears build up behind his eyes. Levi felt a little choked up himself at the notion. The officiator then called for the rings, brought up by Armin. They placed the rings on each other's hands. They had chosen to write their own vows.
Levi was first. "I didn't fall in love with you, Eren. I walked into it. A little slowly, but before I knew it, there I was, wrapped up in your arms. But I chose to take every step along the way. I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose anyway. And I chose you. I would choose you in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, and in any version of reality. You are my confidant, my lover, my best friend, and now my husband. With this ring, I vow to love you forever, to care for you, provide for you, and always choose you. I love you, Eren."
Eren was already in tears by the time he started, already wearing his own ring, but now holding the ring he would place on Levi's hand. "Wow, that's hard to follow. As you know, I'm not eloquent or good with words, so I'll make this short and simple. You're my best friend, Levi. My brightest light, and my husband from this day forward. You've taught me so much, including strength, integrity, peace, and charity. I promise, from this day forward you will never walk alone. My heart will be your shelter, and my arms will be your home. I can't wait to get started on our forever. I love you, Levi."
Eren placed the ring on Levi's finger and they looked to the officiator for what to do next. "Do you take each other for as long as you both shall live?" He asked.
Levi and Eren both said, "I do."
"Then by the power vested in me, I pronounce you married partners. You may…" The man hadn't even finished, and the couple were already in each other's arms, swept away in their first kiss as a married couple. Levi broke the kiss first at the appropriate time, but Eren chased him for one last peck.
They smiled at each other one last time, then the officiator introduced them. "I present to you, for the first time, Eren and Levi Ackerman."
Eren had chosen to take Levi's name, much to Levi's surprise. He would have been happy to take the Jaeger name, but Eren had insisted. He didn't completely understand, but found he was actually okay with it. Even happy about it.
They took each other by the hand and walked down the aisle, smiling at the friends and family they had invited as they passed. They would have everyone file inside the reception room for a moment, and everyone would have the opportunity to walk through the line and personally congratulate the new couple. While that was happening, the staff of the reception center would rearrange the seats and add tables to the floor for the meal and toasts. There were a few tall tables for people to stand around and talk while waiting for the reception to be set up outside.
Inside they would have the dancing after dinner, the cake cutting, and Eren insisted on throwing a bouquet due to tradition. Levi didn't see the point. He didn't even carry a bouquet down the aisle, but if that was what Eren wanted to do, then that's exactly what would happen.
Levi and Eren stood side by side, greeting everyone who came to the wedding as they congratulated them. Family members moved through the line fairly quickly, knowing they would see Eren and Levi many times through the night. Others took longer, though.
Eren had invited his friend, Jean, or as they liked to call him: Horse face. He couldn't get through the line without teasing Eren about something or another and Eren and he ended up in a pissing contest, as usual, that Levi had to pull them out of.
Kim was kind enough to move through quickly, offering a simple congratulations and a hug along with her two roommates that Eren had lived with during his last year at Trost University.
All in all, there were lots of smiles, congratulations, and laughs among the occasional, lighthearted threat about taking care of each other or else…
At the very end of the line came the one person Levi had been working himself up to seeing. Kenny shook Eren's hand in greeting and asked him to take care of Levi while Nanaba gave Levi a hug. Then Eren found himself interested in what would happen between Kenny and Levi. He stood close by, ready to jump between them if necessary. Nanaba also stood guard, though more relaxed than Eren.
"Congratulations, runt. I'm glad to see you so happy." Kenny said, holding out a hand for Levi to shake.
Levi took the hand warily. "Thanks. And thank you for behaving."
"I understand you're nervous having me around. I get it. I brought that on myself. But I made a promise, and I intend to keep it." Kenny reached to wrap an arm around Nanaba's waist. "Thanks for letting me come. I think I'll go find Eric now and see if he'll let me talk to him. I doubt it, but it's worth a shot."
Levi nodded and Kenny walked away, arm in arm with Nanaba, to find Eric. Levi wished him luck internally. Eric was none too pleased that Levi had invited Kenny, even after Levi had explained everything to him. He had already told Levi he would be ignoring Kenny. He promised he wouldn't start anything, but he wanted nothing to do with their uncle ever again, and Levi couldn't blame him. That was his decision to make.
When Levi saw there was no one left in line, he wondered what was next and turned toward Eren. He was surprised with a deep, passionate kiss from familiar lips. Today being his wedding day, Levi allowed himself to be swept away in the kiss. He could hear the shutter from a camera and a few whistles and cheers, but paid it no mind, too swept up in his new husband.
When Eren finally pulled away he smiled cheekily at Levi, then took his hand. "I think we should go take our seats at the table. Everything is ready for us outside." Levi looked behind Eren to see the doors leading outside open and two members of staff letting people through.
Eren and Levi walked hand in hand back outside to find their seats in the middle of the table up front closest to the small stage. Every seat was assigned, which was another thing Levi didn't quite understand. Why not just assign seats for the main table, which included Eren, Levi, Mikasa, Armin, Hanji, Erwin, Eric, Cory, and Eren's parents? Why did the whole room have to be assigned? Eren claimed it was because he wanted those closest to them emotionally, closest to them physically as well. That much made sense, but the whole place had to be arranged? Oh well, it was what Eren wanted.
It only took another ten minutes for the rest of the wedding party to find their seats and food to be served to everyone. Levi and Eren had chosen this specific venue because of efficiency. Even Levi was impressed. They went above and beyond even what he expected, taking down from the wedding and setting up for the reception in record time, and it looked amazing.
The menu tonight was either the Filet Mignon or a seasoned chicken. Vegetarian options were given as well. Levi was surprised when the RSVP's came in that it was about evenly split between the steak and the chicken. He had expected more people to choose the steaks, since it was free. But he wasn't complaining. The chicken was cheaper, and Carla and Grisha paid. He had offered, as usual, but they refused, as usual.
Both Eren and Levi had ordered steaks, and Levi nearly moaned at how well it was cooked. The meat practically melted in his mouth. He and Eren made pleasant conversation as they ate with those at their table.
When their food was finished, waiters came to clear their plates and make sure their glasses were filled for the toasts. Levi sunk down in his seat a little when he realized Hanji and Erwin would be toasting on his side of things. Not to mention Eric. He hoped none of them got any crazy ideas, especially Hanji, who was already three glasses of champagne deep.
On Eren's side, he had nothing to worry about. He had Mikasa, Armin, and his mom giving speeches. Then, of course, Eren and Levi would each take a moment to thank everyone for coming and thank those who had toasted to them.
Hanji was first, much to Levi's chagrin. Why he had chosen her as his maid of honor was beyond him. Actually, it was because he had no one else, but still. He could have left her out. Well, no he couldn't, or she would have thrown a fit, so… he was stuck with it. The maniac took the stage with a glass of champagne in hand and had a serious look on her face. That didn't bode well at all.
"First of all, I want to congratulate my best friend. I didn't think you'd ever find someone that could put up with you, Levi. Between that scowl and your cleaning habits, I'm surprised anyone would want to stick around too long." There were some chuckles that ran through the audience, but Levi just scowled, especially when Eren started laughing. "See, that's what I mean, Levi. You're a grump. But I guess there's someone for everyone. Eren, you really are the perfect match for him. He needs someone patient and understanding like you. He's a totally different person around you, and I'm glad to see it.
"You've come a long way in the last few years, my friend. I know a big part of that is Eren, so I have to thank him for that. I worry about you, but now I know I don't have to anymore. You have Eren, and that's good enough for me. Take care of him, Eren. He needs it. He really does. But in exchange, I know he'll take care of you. Spoil you rotten, even. You're perfect for each other, and I love you both. So, to Eren and Levi!" Hanji rose her glass for the toast. Levi was relieved as he sipped from his own glass. She had done well with that speech.
Mikasa was next up for speeches. She kept it short. "I'm not one for many words, so I'll keep this short. Eren, you're the best brother I could have ever asked for. When you first started dating Levi, I was really worried about it. He can be mean and grumpy, but in the last year I've seen that he treats you like a prince, and that's all I could ever ask for. I love you Eren. Take good care of him, Levi, or you'll have a Mikasa sized foot up your ass." Everyone laughed at that, but Eren knew it was true. "To the new couple." They toasted again.
Erwin took only a few moments as well, mentioning how good of a friend Levi was, and how happy he had found Eren to rely on. But Erwin would always be there for him, no matter what. Armin explained a little about his special relationship with Eren, and how he could tell Levi was the one, even before maybe Eren and Levi knew it. He had seen the way they looked at each other and knew it would only be a matter of time.
Carla didn't make it through her speech without crying. Her baby boy was all grown up, and she was happy he had found someone to spend his life with.
Eric, however, had a little more to say on the matter. "For those of you who haven't known Levi and I very long, you probably don't know much about how we grew up. We had a really hard childhood together. Our mother died when we were really young, and I practically raised my little brother. As we got older, life got harder, but even through it all, Levi has always been a rock for me. Knowing I had him following me around kept me going. I wanted to be an example for him. And even when we grew up and I made some big mistakes that ruined my relationship with my brother for a long time, I still worried about him. I was glad to hear he had made a good life for himself, and a little surprised to hear he had a serious boyfriend.
"When I met Eren, I knew he was the one. He put up with Levi, and sometimes that's kind of hard. But it was good to see someone so patient with him, and in exchange, Levi was also patient with Eren. And Levi's not patient with anyone." There were scattered chuckles from those who knew Levi well. "I'm so glad you found your other half, Levi. I still worry about you, little brother. I always will, you know. But that's what big brothers are for, I guess. But I don't have to worry as much anymore. I know Eren will take care of you and pull you out of the darkness. Perhaps you'll never see that darkness again with him watching over you. That's my hope and wish for you, Levi. I love you, little brother. Take care of each other." He raised his glass and smiled down at Levi, who actually smiled back.
In that moment, Levi was glad he had called Eric that day, and that Eren had encouraged him to do so. He had missed his brother and would never let him go again. Today wouldn't have been the same without him.
Eren stood up next to Levi and took his place up on the stage. "Well, I want to thank everyone for coming tonight. Every one of you has a place in mine and Levi's hearts and today wouldn't have been the same without you all here. Really, I don't have much to say to Levi other than I love you. I said everything else in my vows to you. If I start to add any more none of you will ever go home. There's a lot I can say about Levi, but I'll just go with this. You might be a clean freak and kind of mean sometimes, but you wouldn't be you if you weren't. And I love you. All of you. Don't ever change, Levi. Thanks for loving me, too. Like I said in our vows, I can't wait to get started on our forever. I love you."
Levi stood while everyone else took sips from their glasses and joined Eren on the stage. He kissed him and held him around the waist while he spoke. "I'm not going to say much, because like my new husband said, if I start, I'll go on all night about the things I love about him. But I do want Eren to know that I do love him. And I want our family and friends to know how thankful I am for your support and for being here today. Like Eren said, today wouldn't have been the same without you. We love you all." Everyone took one last sip from their glasses and Eren and Levi went back to their seats.
It was then announced that the music and dancing would happen inside, along with the cake cutting later. Everyone was instructed to follow Levi and Eren into the hall where they would have their first dance.
Eren and Levi hadn't chosen a song for their first dance. Levi had written it. Levi had written it long before they had even started dating. It was always Eren's favorite, and when he asked Levi to play the piano, he always requested that one. It was the first one Levi had ever played for Eren, and it became their song.
Levi had recorded it only weeks earlier and it played over the speakers as they spun around each other on the floor, lost in each other and the music. They didn't speak, only gazed at each other lovingly and enjoyed the moment before everyone else would want a chance to dance with them.
When the song ended, they ended with a kiss and rested their foreheads together while everyone clapped and whistled at them. They then had to split up a bit. Carla wanted to dance with Eren first, then Mikasa, Hanji, and even Armin wanted a turn. So, Levi left the dance floor. That didn't last long before Petra pulled him on the floor, and he was passed from person to person. He even danced with his giants he had for friends, Erwin and Mike.
After far too long of not even seeing his new husband's face, Levi pulled Eren from Kim to pull him to the side so they could sit and have a break for a moment. He could tell Eren was getting tired, but too polite to say anything.
They sat in a couple of chairs close by, Eren's head on Levi shoulder, watching everyone have fun. They sat quietly for a moment, then suddenly Eren gasped and shot up, almost hitting Levi's nose with his head. Levi looked at Eren, shocked. "What have we done?!" he exclaimed.
"What do you mean?" Levi asked in surprise.
"We're missing something vital Levi! How could we have forgotten?" Eren groaned and collapsed against Levi dramatically.
Levi just looked around the room. "I don't think we're missing anything. We said our vows. Everyone got invited. We had dinner. We have a cake. What could possibly be wrong, Eren."
"I was just thinking I can't wait to get to our hotel tonight so we can have a different kind of fun, and I realized, we didn't plan a honeymoon! What were we thinking?! Now it's too late! What are we supposed to do? Honeymoon in a hotel room? That's not the same!"
Levi opened his mouth to speak multiple times through Eren's tirade, but the brunet kept going. But finally, Levi pulled him in for a kiss. "Calm down. I've got it covered."
Eren looked at him funny. "What do you mean you've got it covered? How are we going to plan a honeymoon so quickly? We'll probably have to wait to go now, and…"
Levi put a hand on Eren's mouth to stop him and gave him a meaningful look. "I've got it covered."
Levi watched the gears turn in Eren's head for a moment before he gasped again and removed Levi's hand from his mouth. "You mean to tell me you planned a honeymoon without me even knowing about it? How is that possible?"
"You were so wrapped up in wedding plans that you never said anything. And you were busy with classes. I figured it would be a good surprise. If you had asked about it, I would have told you, but your thick head didn't even think about it until just now."
"Seriously? Where are we going?" Eren's eyes lit up with the idea of getting away for a while.
"That part I'm keeping a surprise. We leave in the morning. We need to be at the airport by six am. So, we shouldn't stay too long tonight. Besides," Levi leaned in to whisper in Eren's ear, "I want plenty of time to ravish you tonight. I'm going to take you apart, piece by piece until you're begging for my cock."
Eren whimpered. "Levi, not here. There's too many people." A bright red blush crept up his cheeks and his whole face turned a nice shade of red.
Levi just chuckled and kissed Eren's warm cheek. "Later then. It looks like they want us to cut the cake." Levi stood to walk toward the crowd gathering around the giant cake, hand in hand with his embarrassed husband.
The rest of the night went smoothly. They not-so-nicely fed each other cake and Levi got chocolate cake on his suit, making Eren laugh at the disgusted face his husband sported. Then Eren tossed the bouquet he was so insistent on throwing, and Eric caught it. He then gave Cory a cheeky smile, but Cory just shook his head in exasperation. "I guess I'm next." Eric shouted as he held the bouquet in the air.
Kenny behaved himself all night, and even Eric spoke to him, if only for a moment and with high tensions. At least he didn't throw any punches. Kenny was as charming as Kenny could possibly get, perhaps even more so, and treated Nanaba like a queen the whole night. She never went to get her own drinks or anything. Levi gained a small amount of respect for his uncle through the night. By the end of the night, he thought he really might deserve a chance. They would have to address that when Levi and Eren returned from their Honeymoon.
Eren and Levi left the celebration close to midnight to drive to their hotel. The party would end, and everyone would go home. But Eren and Levi still had one more thing left to do, and neither of them could wait any longer by the time they arrived at their room.
