In this chapter, Mary will receive letters from Hogwarts.
Seems she has the spark that her mother and father had.
But somebody doesn't want her to go to Hogwarts.
His name starts with V and ends with N.
Will he succeed in preventing her from going to Hogwarts?
I assure you, they're not the type of people who had taken a no for an answer.
Chapter 2: Letters from Hogwarts
For her "diabolical" act of releasing the boa constrictor from the zoo (who was well on his way to Brazil by now), Mary was still spending her time in the cupboard.
The spiders noted they didn't usually spend this much time with her.
On the same day that Mary helped the snake with his escape, she was denied dinner.
But Dudley had sneaked in his while his parents weren't looking.
He figured if he weren't so fat snakes wouldn't find him appetizing.
Eventually, the summer holidays came around. Mary enjoyed the summer, but she did have to worry about Dudley's friends trying to take her glasses off.
Luckily, she wasn't exactly short. She was familiar with the tantalization game they liked to play, so her height would give her an advantage.
Piers was no longer a member of the group due to his betrayal.
For a while, Mary's life was back to normal.
But one day, something mysterious happened.
Somebody sent a letter to Mary…which was unusual, given that she didn't receive mail from her neighbors. Most of the mail seemed to be hate mail for the Dursleys.
Why did they receive hate mail, anyway?
"I just got a letter! I wonder who it's from?" asked Mary.
"You can keep on wondering, because I'm pretty sure there's been a mistake!" exclaimed Vernon.
He snatched the letter from her hands.
Afterwards, Mr. Dursley read the letter.
"What?!" exclaimed Vernon.
"Congratulations, Mary Potter, who lives in the cupboard underneath the stairs at 4 Privet Drive. You've been chosen to attend Hogwarts Academy! You can choose to attend or go to a different wizard school…but we feel you would be at home at the same wizarding school your parents grew up in."
Sincerely,
Professor Dumbledore."
In his fury, Vernon crumpled up the paper.
"No no no! She is not attending wizarding school!" exclaimed the man with the mustache.
"I don't really see why you're complaining, Vernon. You'll get to spend three seasons away from Mary." noted Petunia. Assuming Mary got summers off.
Though part of her would miss her niece. She was all that was left of her sister.
"Yeah, but what about when she gets home? I'm not looking forward to being transformed into a bear!" exclaimed Vernon.
"Huh. I never really thought of it, but Uncle Vernon does look like a bear." remarked Mary Potter to herself, who was sitting on the couch.
Vernon's face turned white.
"She's staying here! She's not joining any dark cults!" exclaimed the man.
"If you're going to make her stay here, we might have a problem." warned Petunia.
"Oh. What problem would that be?" asked Vernon.
"Something tells me they're not going to give up easily on sending Mary letters." pointed out Mary's aunt.
She knew that her parents had failed to notice that Lily had received a letter in their mail…and were surprised when seven more were sent.
Still, Lily was happy they were persistent, for the letter changed her life forever. And she might not have been married otherwise.
"If you're so worried, why don't you move her to Dudley's bedroom, then?" asked Mary's uncle.
That way, he could make extra sure Mary did not receive another letter.
"Hmm, I'm not sure how Dudley would feel about that." noted Petunia.
"It'll be fine." answered Vernon.
A short while later…
"NO! You can't make me go in there! It's full of spiders!" bellowed Dudley, his eyes widening with fear.
"Don't worry, they're not venomous! I know what species they are!" exclaimed Mary.
Dudley wondered if the spiders told her those things. It was kind of creepy.
"You're going in there because Mary's not going to become the Wicked Witch of the West!" shouted Vernon.
"Wouldn't you be able to pour water on her if she turns evil?" asked Petunia.
"That only works in movies…and books!" exclaimed Vernon.
"I think we could be in either of those things." pointed out Vernon's wife. The only question was which was it.
"Just get in the cupboard!" demanded the father of Dudley.
"I can't! I'm too fat!" explained the school bully.
All of a sudden, Vernon was regretting feeding Dudley so much.
As Mr. Dursley struggled to get his son inside the cupboard, Mary decided to read the books that were in Dudley's room.
She figured he wouldn't be happy if she touched his computer, but there was no sign he had ever read any of the books in the room.
"Man, he does not know what he is missing!" exclaimed the girl.
The next day, Mary noticed something had been slid underneath her door.
This one was addressed to Dudley's bedroom this time.
It seemed they somehow knew about her change in bedroom.
"Another letter? I wonder if it's from the same people as before." noted Mary.
Suddenly, Vernon kicked the door open.
"What's going on? Is there a fire?" asked the girl.
"No, but I know what I'm going to put IN the fire!" exclaimed the grumpy man.
Vernon Dursley grabbed the letter and took it to the fireplace.
"What's going on? Are Christians sending me death threats?" asked Mary. Maybe Vernon was shielding her eyes.
They seemed to want that boy (who also had a lightning shaped scar) from that alternate dimension burned at the stake for practicing witchcraft. So perhaps they wanted her dead too.
Maybe she should sleep with one eye open tonight.
The next morning…
Since Mary had woken up early, she decided to go outside and enjoy the fresh air.
But as she went downstairs, something unexpected happened.
"Aaaaaahhhhh!" exclaimed Vernon in pain.
Mary gasped.
She had stepped right on her uncle's face!
Thankfully, she never seemed to step on the spiders in the cupboard. Maybe it was because they could hear her footsteps.
It appeared that Vernon had decided to sleep at the bottom of the staircase tonight. In a sleeping bag. The question was why that was.
"I'm sorry! I didn't see you!" exclaimed the girl.
Even though she had remembered to put on her glasses.
Maybe she should pay more attention to her surroundings.
Though to be fair, Dudley wasn't expecting his dad to sleep outside his bedroom either.
"What were you doing out of bed?" asked Vernon.
"I was just going outside to enjoy the summer breeze!" explained Mary.
"A likely story! Go back to your room!" exclaimed the man.
"But Dudley's sleeping in there." pointed out Vernon's niece.
Dudley let out a scream. It seemed he had woken up with a spider on his face.
That had happened to Mary sometimes…but she enjoyed that.
"Then go back to Dudley's room!" shouted Vernon.
"Ok then. But are you sure you want to sleep out here? I think your bedroom is probably more comfortable." pointed out Mary.
Though to be fair, everyone seemed to be changing where they slept as of late.
"I'm sure! Now go back to bed!" ordered Mary's uncle-in-law.
The girl who lived nodded and went back to bed.
Maybe she could feel the summer breeze through the window.
Vernon sighed in relief.
For a moment he thought Mary would get the mail before he did…unaware that she never planned to open the mailbox in the first place.
What a crisis that would have been.
He could imagine her setting fire to his neighborhood.
"She's not going to Hogwarts! She's going to Stonewall High!" exclaimed Vernon.
Or maybe Smeltings School. Would Dudley mind that?
Over the next few days, things continued on. More and more mail continued to arrive in the house, but Vernon kept burning them before Mary could see them.
It wasn't easy for Vernon though. He was surprised where he found letters.
Let's just say that Mr. Dursley wasn't going to need to go to the store to buy more firewood anytime soon.
Vernon assumed that he wouldn't get mail on Sunday, but he was dead wrong.
"Oh c'mon!" exclaimed the man.
"If I had a nickel for every letter that they've sent me…" thought Vernon to himself.
Eventually, Vernon decided that he and his family were going to a hotel. They wouldn't know where they were that way.
Mary was surprised they didn't let her stay at Ms. Figgs.
She was able to walk now.
As a side note, Ms. Figgs noticed the four driving away.
"They're taking Mary on vacation? I must be dreaming." remarked the woman.
Although, she heard that during her incapacitation, she had gone to the zoo. She was worried for a moment if Vernon and Petunia Dursley were planning to put her IN a zoo.
Unfortunately for Vernon, they managed to find them even at their temporary residence.
"Has the mailman been spying on us?" asked Mary.
"Do they have tracking hounds or something?" asked the man.
"Maybe?" answered Petunia.
It looked like they were going to have to resort to drastic measures to stop the mailman (or mailmen, as the case may be) from pestering them.
They were going to a shack across the sea, so that nobody would ever find them. Except maybe a fish.
And even if they knew where to find them, it would be unlikely that they would deliver mail to them tonight. The weather forecast called for a storm.
Mary noticed there was a sign nearby.
"Welcome to the Hut-in-the-Rock, the perfect hiding place for criminals!" read the sign.
"Um, I'm not sure we should go here." warned Mary.
It didn't sound like a pleasant place.
"Nonsense!" exclaimed Vernon.
Since the hut was across the sea, the four of them used a boat to travel there.
But unfortunately, Dudley fell out.
Seemed the boat was a bit small for all of them.
"Help me! I can't swim!" bellowed the boy.
He was too obese for that.
Again, Vernon was regretting his decision to feed him so much…though he hadn't eaten much since they tried to hide from the super determined mailman that kept sending Mary letters.
"I'll save you!" exclaimed Dudley's cousin.
She grabbed his arm and pulled him back onto the boat.
It was the least she could do after Vernon made him spend a few days in the cupboard.
Vernon and Petunia were grateful for her help, though Vernon was reluctant to admit it.
On the way into the hut, Dudley began to cry.
"What's wrong?" asked Mary.
"I can't watch TV…" complained the boy.
He was sure that there were some nice programs on TV too. Of course, some of them weren't appropriate for kids his age.
"If it makes you feel any better, there was probably going to be a blackout anyway." noted the girl.
Dudley whimpered.
Luckily, nobody got seasick on the way there.
But Dudley needed to dry himself off after falling off the boat.
Which was easier said than done, seeing as the fireplace inside the hut was damp.
Regarding the hut, it smelled like seaweed.
"Did you remember to lock the door back home?" asked Petunia.
Vernon facepalmed.
Apparently, he had not.
Seemed he shouldn't have been in such a hurry to leave. After all, Dudley intended to pack some of his comic books.
Vernon hadn't brought many provisions, but maybe if his son didn't eat much he could finally fit through the cupboard without assistance back home.
Mary almost forgot during all the commotion, but she was about to turn eleven.
They never seemed to give her as many presents as they did Dudley though. If she counted correctly, it was normal for him to receive more than two dozen presents.
Were Vernon and Petunia Dursley on a budget? She supposed that was understandable. They had to pay the rent somehow.
The storm outside was rather loud, so Mary spent her time awake.
That wasn't the only reason though. It was normal for her to feel excited for her birthday, though instead of a birthday cake, she received a cupcake instead.
That was OK though, because she liked cupcakes.
Vernon wondered how he was going to stop her from casting magic. She didn't get upset easily. The same could not be said for his son.
Petunia had already folded her cards. She figured that if she couldn't stop Lily from using magic, she couldn't stop Mary, either.
As the clock began ticking down, Lily and James' daughter wondered why she was starting to hear footsteps.
This hut wasn't haunted, was it?
Now that she thought of it, Dudley could have drowned in the sea.
Perhaps somebody hadn't been so lucky and had drowned there.
If so, she hoped the ghost was friendly.
There was no phone, so they couldn't call the Ghostbusters.
Just as the clock hit twelve, somebody busted down the door.
"Mary Potter!" exclaimed a loud voice.
The whole family gasped.
Standing before them was a giant man.
"Well, this hut turned out to be a hideout for a crazy axe murderer. It was nice knowing you all!" exclaimed Mary Potter.
THE END?
In the next chapter…well, we'll just have to see whether there is a next chapter, now won't we?
I'm sorry to leave you hanging.
