Later that night, Evra was at Mr. Tall's trailer, showing him the horrific drawings the young vampire had drawn, and raised some caution of alarm.
"I think Sam knows what Nyx is." Evra said.
The tall man was sitting on a beanbag chair, his tall hat sitting on a nearby nightstand. He held the papers in his hand, looking like scraps in comparison to his large palm, though his nails were long, he took care not to damage the drawings as he looked through them.
Especially the one that had her "Sire" killing and drinking her mother's blood in front of the child.
"Nyx told him?" Mr. Tall asked, his lips barely moving but was speaking clearly.
"No. Sam might be naive and gullible, but he isn't stupid." Evra said, scratching his arm where he got clawed by Nyx. "He gave her a vampire-like name and even mentioned she looked like one from the media. I could tell the gears in his head turned when he saw the drawing."
"Are you nervous that he might bring trouble?"
"I don't know. But with that kid, anything is possible." Evra responded. He then shifted to the vampire in the drawing. "You think he'll come for her?"
Mr. Tiny sighed. "I do not know, Master Von." he said, placing the drawings on the table.
"If he is, we can't let him get to her." Evra said. His hand balled up in thought flashing his mind. Along with a few unsettling memories of his own.
Mr. Tall glanced up at him. "You seem to be fond of her."
Evra grunted when he stated that but didn't deny it.
He couldn't help but find some similarities to his own misfortunes with his old Circus master, seeing Nyx as him. Even for a brief moment.
Mr. Tall closed his eyes, waited in silence for a second before saying, "I think it has been long enough for her to be cooped up in the trailer."
"What?"
Mr. Tall scratched his neck before continuing. "As dire as her situation is, you know as well as I do that if one wants to stay here, they have to work to earn their keep. And not to mention someone has to be responsible for her."
"Sir, forgive me but Nyx isn't ready for work. She's just barely getting used to Sam and I interacting with her." Evra said, his feet shuffled on the floor but didn't move from his spot. "And not to mention, the only person who might be able to handle her, Nyx is afraid of."
"And how do you know that?" Mr. Tall asked, raising a brow at that.
"The other day, she held a Madam Octa keychain...she remembered what she did to the real spider and looked scared holding it."
"That is making an assumption."
"And not to mention something about her spook Mr. Crepsley."
That's when Mr. Tall let out a laugh. "Is she giving Larten a fright? Evra, do you know how ridiculous that sounds?"
Evra shook his head. "I wouldn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. He tasted her blood to see what she was. I never saw him take off running like that. Whatever he tasted, it scared him."
"Hmm." the leader of the cirque pursed his lips, rubbing his chin as he took in consideration.
Nyx's white hair and single red eye, able to flit though she was a half vampire, her blood tasting different from normal half vampires, still unable to read her mind.
"More and more, this child is becoming more of an oddity." He muttered softly.
Some say she was perfect to join this merry band of performing freaks of the world.
He had received word a day or so ago from his sister Evanna that she was not indeed the mother of the child, the drawing clearly backing it up.
A young orphaned vampire.
"Do not go into her trailer in the morning." Mr. Tall said to Evra.
"But Mr. Tall~"
"Nyx will come out on her own recognitive, you'll see. And Evra?"
"Yes sir?" Evra asked.
"Keep a closer eye on Sam. Last thing we need is him alerting us of any unwanted attention."
The sound of birds chirping awakened the child the following morning. She sat up groggily, rubbing her tired eyes with a groan before looking around the trailer.
Besides being in disarray by her own deeds, she was alone. No mysterious blue robed creatures in sight.
She got up to use the bathroom, being mindful of the shattered glass, then headed back to her bed and grabbed two of her dolls and began playing with them while she waited for breakfast.
She waits.
And wait.
And waits some more.
But after what felt like an eternity, Nyx realized that no one was coming, not even Sam who usually comes around this time.
Curiously, Nyx climbed out of the bed and hopped on the countertops to look out the window.
She could see people walking around doing their normal day-to-day chores. Some human, some the performers. She squinted her eyes when she saw a group of them sitting by a fire eating.
Just barely spots the green scaly boy among them.
Maybe he's getting his food on before her?
She stared at him before looking at the other performers. Mostly all adults, they looked like they were enjoying themselves, all chatting and laughing about something.
Biting her lower lip nervously, she redraws herself away from the window.
She goes back to her dolls before accidentally kicking clothes that Sam had brought over for her the other day across the floor.
Nyx stops and looks down at them. From what she gathered, it looked like he had brought her a couple sets of pants and shirts, a couple of shorts, a pair of pink sneakers with white laces and one pair of black overalls. Probably belonged to this sister Sam mentioned.
She stared at them before looking back down at the nightgown she woke up wearing a couple of days ago before looking at the door of the trailer.
Should I? Nyx thought.
Nyx knew she couldn't stay inside the trailer for long, she would have to go and interact with others, not just the boys. She did feel safe inside but after a few days, the trailer was starting to get a little too claustrophobic for her liking.
She had spent years running and trying to escape her captor and failed. Many years she had thought of giving up, but she had escaped.
Letting out the whimper, Nyx decided to go for it.
It took her a moment but she was able to change herself into the clothes Sam gave her. Wearing a flowery pattern shirt and light blue pants, she didn't know how to tie her shoes so her feet remained bare. The clothes were loose but that was to be expected with her skinny figure.
Though hesitant, Nyx knew this had to happen. She couldn't stay cooped up anymore after years of captivity. She worked up the courage, psyching herself up the same way she had done for years before grabbing the handle of the trailer and opening the door.
She was taken back by the blinding light of the sun but it didn't take long for her to see right and walked out.
As Nyx approached the group cautiously, she would look over her shoulder to see if anyone was behind her. It was out in the open, and the monsters were asleep, it was safe for her to venture off.
At least she hopes so.
When Nyx got close, one of the female helpers looked up and spotted her. She nudged Hans with her elbow and reached over and tapped Evra's shoulder, motioning the others to look.
Evra turns his head and sees that Nyx was out on her own. "Oh, morning Nyx." Evra smiled.
"Well look what the cat dragged in," Hans said.
Truska says something towards Hans, looking at him confused, making Evra giggle.
"It's a figure of speech, Truska...though I don't really blame him for making that comparison." Evra said, assuring her before getting up and walking up to Nyx.
Nyx took a couple of steps back when Evra approached a little too close to her. She hugged herself as she gazed up at him before looking over at the group.
"It's okay Nyx, you're safe with us." Evra said, minding his distance. He then motioned her to one of the fallen logs that was used for seating.
Truska tilted her head when she looked at the little girl. A thought passed by her head but she didn't say anything.
Nyx looked between Evra and the other members. She bit her lower lip in consideration before she silently went to the log and sat down. She gave the other members a little wave.
Evra took a seat next to her, still minding her space. "Alrighty, let me introduce you to everyone," he said, raising his hand and motioning to each performer and helper here. "That's Hans Hands, the fastest man on two legs." Pointing at the burly looking man.
"A pleasure," Hans gave Nyx a salute before digging into his plate of food.
Evra then moved over to Truska. "This is the lovely Truska,"
Nyx looked over to the lady, tilting her head, thinking that this pretty lady looked like one of the dolls Evra gave her.
Then she started speaking in her native tongue.
Evra giggled at the pure confusion on the child's face when trying to understand what Truska was saying.
"She says it's nice to see you outside with us." Evra said, translating for her. "Her language is hard to translate but I'm doing my best."
Nyx looked at the group before looking back at Evra.
Again, the group was facing the fact that Nyx was mute and verbal communication was pretty much one sided.
Truska, however, made the first move. She got up and fixed a plate of food, eggs, sausage, the usual fixins before walking over to Nyx and offered it to her. She spoke in her native tongue, calm, caring. When she spoke, there was a maternal tone in her voice.
"Truska wants to know if you're hungry." Evra translated.
Nyx looked up at the woman with a soft look before looking at the plate. She silently took the plate from her, giving her a nod before digging in, again using her hands instead of a fork. Not even concerned about it still being hot.
Evra chuckled softly as he finished up his meal. He looked at Nyx before saying, "After you get done eating, how about I show you around, Nyx?" he offered her.
Nyx pauses in her eating to look up at him. She considers it for a moment before nodding yes.
