The waxing moon rose in the sky as nightfalls upon the Cirque Du Freak. Larten sat in front of a small fire pit. He had one of his collapsible pots he had received as a gift, making himself some stew.
As he tended to the food, he inclined his head towards the direction of Hibernius Tall approaching him.
"Evening, Larten," Mr. Tall greeted the vampire as he approached him, his hands tucked behind his back.
Larten looked up and gave the owner a nod. "Evening Hibernus, care to join me?"
It took some time for the tall, lanky man to sit down on the ground and he sat with a groan.
Hibernius looked to Larten. "Heard there was some excitement near The Wolfman's cage earlier."
The vampire looked up from the pot when he started.
"She was lucky the Wolfman did not kill her." Larten responded.
"If it wasn't for you and Hans coming to Nyx's aid when she needed it indeed." Mr. Tall nodded.
There would seem to be a pattern reoccurring for the red cladded vampire. Especially in regards to Nyx. And each time he intervened, whatever Nyx interacted with, more and more evidence was revealed.
"So… to clear the air so to speak, I do believe it's safe to say that Nyx is not a normal half vampire… I'm close to saying she is not even one at all. " Mr. Tall said. After all the evidence he has seen and heard..
"There is vampire in her, that much is certain. " Larten said in confidence. However he had a grim expression on his face. "Her being half human, that is the uncertainty." He solemnly shook his head.
Hibernius thought for a moment. "Whatever her origins were before, we may never know. But this is news for your kind. "
"News of a new breed of vampire. " Larten said.
Nyx showed she has an ability that only a full vampire and a selected view have, when he saw her eyes had changed, almost as if she was changing into something else. And add to the fact her blood was edible when he tested it. "The Princes in Vampire Mountain would want to know of this."
Logically, they need to know if there's a new variant running around, just unfortunate that it had to be a young child.
"Are you going to be the one to make the trek with her?" Mr. Tall asked.
Larten shook his head. "At this point, the child is too fragile to even make an attempt to make the journey. And the way she keeps running from me every time I try to help has made things more difficult." He huffed but he understood.
If he were in her place, he wouldn't want anything to do with vampires he suppose.
"And after her run-in with the Wolfman, she may not want to interact with anyone." Mr. Tall sighed heavily. He took off his hat to run his hand through his hair. "She would need someone to keep an eye on her. Evra is doing what he can but there is only so much the boy can do."
"And you think she should be in my care?" Larten continues to tend to the fire. "I am not so sure about that." There was hesitation in his tone.
"If not you then who? A new variant or not, she needs a vampire to aid her or otherwise she will not survive. Unless you take her to the mountain and let the Princes and Generals sort it out, she will still need to be watched over and taught properly in the meantime. Right now she's alone. "
And probably feels even moreso…
As much as Larten didn't want to take it up, Mr. Tall was right. Regardless how he felt about her and the situation they were in, Nyx ultimately needs a guardian at the end of the night.
It's just the matter of Nyx coming out and learning how to trust him.
The next afternoon, Evra came up to the camper. He sees there were plates of food and sweets left on the steps for Nyx but they haven't been picked up by her.
He frowned.
Dammit Sam, all that hard work, taking one step forward and now she took ten steps backwards. Yes he didn't know Nyx came out, but that man he brought with scared her, it only made things much worse with the Wolfman.
He grabbed a few of the plates and put them on the ground before he step up to the door.
Evra raised his hand and knocked on the door. "Nyx? Nyx, i-its Evra." He announced. He tried entering but quickly realized that she had blocked the door again.
He was met with silence once more.
Nyx hadn't moved from her spot on the torn up carpet inside the destroyed camper. Hand stung but the bleeding stopped. She was still curled up to a tight ball.
Her eyes were puffy and though tears had finally stopped, it didn't change that she was feeling despair. She was so tired of everything.
When she heard the door knock for the umpteenth time that day, she covered her ears with her hands, ignoring all life outside.
Just… just leave me be, she wanted to say but she felt like she was unable to.
"Nyx, I'm so sorry about yesterday." Evra said from outside. "About Sam, that man he brought… I tried to warn you about… ." He stopped with a sigh. "There's… there's no excuse for it, yesterday wasn't good, but these things happen… I know you're scared to death about everything… "
Evra sat on the steps and leaned against the door.
"I was scared when I first got here too. Not trusting others, scared that… they would hurt me like my last owner or they would be worse. " He closed his eyes. "This circus, everyone last member here, we all have our own story, their own reason for being here, but we came together and became a family." His voice trembled, trying to hold himself back, shaking his head.
Nyx sat up as he spoke, bringing her knees close to her chest. She didn't want to move the stuff. She didn't want anyone or anything to get to her, that was the point of barricading the door. to make sure the monsters don't hurt her again.
"Nyx, I know you're scared, what you've been through, no one should ever have to endure… I don't know the full extent but I know how you feel. But one thing you have to admit, you're free. " Evra said.
That got Nyx to look up towards the barricade door.
"You're freed, the bastard who hurt you isn't here. You're away from him, if he shows up, by God I hope that doesn't happen, but I swear to you this, Nyx, you will be protected… you're not alone anymore… "
She then hears something that really got her attention. Biting her lip, she got up, moved to the countertop and hops on it. She looked outside the broken window and saw Evra was sitting on the steps.
Nyx saw him with his hands covering his face, and what appeared to be him crying.
Her gaze softened when she stared at him before moving away from the window and hopped down.
It took a few moments to push what clutter she could aside before opening the door.
Evra was trying to get control of himself when she opened the door. He turns to look at her out of surprise.
What was more of a surprise was when Nyx reached out to him, as gently as she could with her sharp claws, placed a hand on his green scaly cheek and wiped the tears away.
Though his scales were mostly green, Evra's cheeks blushed brown.
"Oh uh… " he was at a loss of words. Didn't mean to dig up his own past in this situation but to have her come out… for him.
He then took the moment and peered inside the now completely trashed and unlivable camper, saw the destroyed items, the mutilated doll, it honestly looked like some monster came in and demolished everything. He looked and saw the cut on her hand.
"Are you okay?" He asked her.
Nyx glances at the cut for a moment before shaking her head yes.
"Okay… okay," he said, wiping his face. "I'm… I'm sorry about the Wolfman, I'm glad you're okay… a lot of us are. " Evra said before he got up and got down the steps, only to turn back to her.
"Tonight's the last show before we leave soon.. I really want you to come and see us perform. Please?"
He held a hand out for her.
Nyx bit her lower lip as she thought about it for a while, but it didn't take long.
She nodded, reached her hand out and grabbed his hand.
Evra couldn't believe that worked! He gently held hers, "let's go, we gotta do a few errands before the show." He said before the two left the trailer and ventured further in camp.
