Hello there everyone! I've got the next chapter here for you all, and given what happens in this one I have a feeling you guys are gonna like it. I don't want to give too much away, but I think most of you will enjoy this.
Other than that I don't have much to say. Except, and I mentioned this in the last Whatever Comes Next update, but I recently got a new job a few days ago. And while I'm very excited, the hours are also a little crazy. Right now, I'm not sure how much it'll affect my writing and the ability to get updates out to you guys. Once I settle in and figure out more of my schedule, I'll definitely let you all know if things are gonna change. But I just wanted to let you all know now, in case I do need to adjust some things.
Other than that, thank you all for reading this one and I'll see you next time!
***UPDATE 10/31/22: Hey guys, just wanted to let you all know there won't be an update this week. I started my job last Wednesday, and I am currently finishing up six days of working overnights in a row. Which has left me with virtually no time to write, or do anything really except sleep. I'm sorry for the late notice on this one, over the next few days I'm gonna try and figure out what to do with my writing schedule and if I'll need to change some things around. But for now, I'm just gonna do my best to try to get something written for you guys by next Monday. Thank you for understanding, and again I'm really sorry about no update this week.
Chapter One Hundred and Ninety Five
"Uncle Kelly, you're cutting it wrong."
Severide raised his eyebrows as the six year old chastised him from her spot in the booth next to him, the man pausing his movements of cutting up her pancake before he glanced her way, finding a near indignant look on the child's face. She was perched up on her shins, forearms resting against the table as her hawk-like gaze moved between him and her plate in front of him, her distaste easy to spot before he left out a soft chuckle.
"Oh I am, huh?" Severide responded, Caitlyn nodding instantly while Matt watched on in amusement from his seat across the table, his one hand wrapped around Sofia's stomach as she sat in his lap. The two year old was currently munching on a piece of egg Matt had given her, Sof completely unaware of anything else going on around her while Caitlyn's intense focus never left Kelly. "How can pancakes be cut wrong?" He asked her, getting a shrug in response.
"Daddy does it different." She stated, Kelly cocking his head to the side before his gaze moved over to Casey, who was merely grinning.
"Does he?" He continued to play along, Caitlyn nodding profusely while she slid closer to her godfather. "And how does your dad do it?"
"He cuts the long way." She simply spoke, Matt biting back a smirk before Severide shot him an unimpressed look, his face then softening as he glanced back towards Caitlyn.
"It's a circle, Caity." He tried to reason, as her distaste for his pancake cutting skills didn't make much sense given the food, and it would all turn out the same anyway. But his words didn't mean anything to her, Caitlyn not understanding the point he was making as she just continued to stare at her uncle, Matt attempting to hide his laughter before Severide went with a different approach. "Okay, well how do you know that he isn't the one doing it the wrong way, and I'm actually right?" He challenged, but she still wasn't fazed as she simply scrunched up her nose before shaking her head.
"Because he's Daddy." She replied without missing a beat, causing Matt to finally let out a light chuckle while Kelly scoffed.
"That's right, baby." Casey praised, Caitlyn grinning his way before Severide reluctantly went back to cutting up her food.
"Alright, well I can't compete with that… But I guarantee you, it still tastes the same." He assured her, sliding the plate back towards her and handing her the fork.
"Okay." She gave in with a shrug, Matt and Kelly both letting out another laugh while the six year old began to enjoy her meal, joining her sister as the four of them continued on with their late morning brunch.
"Every day she becomes more and more like Dawson, you realize that, right?" Severide commented before shoving a bit of omelet into his mouth, Matt's beaming smile never faltering while he rubbed his hand over Sofia's stomach.
"Yeah, I know she is." He answered proudly, letting his gaze drift back to Caity while she took a big bite of her eggs. "And I love it."
"Me too." Caity echoed with a full mouth, clearly listening to their conversation as Kelly laughed dryly before turning his head down towards her. "I wanna be like Mommy." She said, and even though that wasn't the first time Matt had heard that from his daughter, it still made his heart burst in his chest every time she mentioned it.
"Well, you're in luck kid. Cause you are." Severide responded, patting her leg before the group went back to their food, Matt helping Sofia tackle a little bit of sausage while Caitlyn was handling her meal well on her own. "But speaking of Dawson, where is she this morning?" Kelly asked a few minutes later, nursing his cup of coffee in his hand. "I was a little surprised to not see her here."
"Mommy's at home." Caitlyn answered first, while shifting her weight on her legs, Kelly glancing towards her before looking at Matt, who nodded in agreement.
"Mama seep." Sofia repeated brightly, Casey chuckling at both his daughters before he pressed a kiss to the top of Sof's head while his youngest ate her food.
"The girls are right, Gabby's at home resting." He responded easily, Severide giving him a nod just as Caitlyn accidently dropped her napkin down onto the ground.
"Uh oh." Caity spoke, pushing herself back slightly to see the white paper on the floor. But before she could even try and reach for it, Severide intervened.
"I got it, kid." He told her, not wanting to risk Caitlyn hitting her head on the table as he bent down to pick it up before handing it back to her.
"Thank you Uncle Kelly." She said while stabbing another bite of pancakes with her fork.
"You're welcome, squirt." He responded back, Kelly eating some more of his own food while Matt just smiled at the simple interaction between his best friend and his oldest daughter. "So is Dawson okay?" Severide then asked him, returning to their previous conversation as Casey began to push his food around his plate.
"She is." Matt replied with a soft nod. "She just had kind of a long night, couldn't get comfortable… I don't know if she's quite far enough along to where she can actually feel the baby moving, but she was just restless last night. It happens." He continued, shrugging while he spoke before Severide nodded. "She decided to stay home, to try and get some sleep. I told her I'd bring her some food." He spoke, earning a nod from Kelly. "And plus Camila's there with her, so she's alright."
"Ah yeah, that's good." Severide agreed with a soft smile. "I know Gabby's been really excited having her mom back in town."
Casey's face brightened at Severide's words before he started to nod strongly, knowing just how true that statement was.
Camila, and Ramon, had been back in Chicago for a few weeks now, once they'd finished closing up everything in the Dominican, and having them back had been incredible. Certainly for Gabby, but also for their girls, Matt knew it had been great for them to have her back, and to be a more steady part of their lives. It was something that made his wife happier than she could even put into words, which then made Matt just as happy.
"She has been, yeah." Casey eventually responded. "It's been so great for her to have her mom here, especially with the baby coming. Gabby's loving it." He added on with a grin, Severide matching his look while he nodded. "And it's been great for the girls, too. Getting more time with her. Her and Ramon."
"I bet." Severide agreed, getting another bite of eggs before he shoved it into his mouth. "But I'm glad everything's going well there, with Gabby and the girls." He added on, Matt nodding in agreement before glancing down to check on Sofia, just to ensure she was able to handle the amount of food in her mouth. "And what about you?" Kelly asked a second later, regaining Casey's attention.
"It's good, it's nice having her back." Casey replied, clearly misunderstanding Severide's question before the Lieutenant started shaking his head.
"No- I meant in general." Severide clarified, seeing Matt's brows furrows.
"Oh… I'm good." He said simply, although Kelly wasn't too convinced. And hadn't been for a while.
Since that moment last week at the firehouse, Severide had tried to keep a bit of a closer eye on his friend. But he hadn't exactly approached him about whatever it was that was bothering Casey. There hadn't been a good time for it, with them either being too busy or there being too many people around, and it wasn't like he could do it now either, as this certainly wasn't a conversation to be had in front of his girls. So Kelly had stuck to just buying his time, trying to find the right moment. But even though they hadn't talked about it, that didn't stop Severide from worrying.
"Yeah?" Severide checked.
"Mhmm, I'm doing well." Casey repeated with a shrug. "Gabby's great, the girls are great. Our baby is perfect, so I'm good." He continued, it not lost on Severide how Matt wasn't talking so much about himself as he was his family. But given their surroundings, he didn't push it. "And plus, we get to find out what we're having tomorrow." Matt said with a genuine smile, Kelly's features softening while their conversation shifted.
"Really?"
"Yeah, Gabby's 15 week appointment is in the morning." He spoke brightly, Matt looking like the happiest man alive as he continued to pat his hand over Sofia's stomach and chest. "And if the baby cooperates, we should be able to tell if we're having a boy or a girl."
"That's amazing, man." Kelly replied, earning a nod from him. "I can't believe Dawson's 15 weeks pregnant already."
"Me neither." Casey breathed out.
"But you're excited?" Severide pressed, regaining his gaze. "About finding out the gender?"
"Beyond it." He answered without a thought, causing Kelly to smile. "I'm so excited. I don't even care what we're having, I just want to know."
"Yeah, yeah… But you're wanting another girl, aren't you?" He asked lightheartedly, both of them already knowing the answer as Matt chuckled softly.
"I just want a healthy baby, Sev." He replied, but Severide shook his head.
"We both know you're lying, but either way you're right.. As long as the baby is healthy, that's what's important." Kelly agreed, Matt nodding while he shuffled Sofia to sit on his other leg. "You'll have to let me know how it goes."
"We will." Casey promised, Severide smiling softly before he glanced back down towards the girl next to him, seeing her still working on her pancakes.
"Are Camila and Ramon watching the girls while you guys go?" He questioned a few seconds later, looking across the table just as Casey shook his head.
"We're taking them with us." He answered, Severide raising his eyebrows before smiling softly.
"You are?"
"Mhmm, we want them to be there." He responded, Kelly seeing the contentment in Matt's features before he looked over to Caity. "Isn't that right, baby?" He asked, Severide following his line of sight to see Caitlyn suddenly alert and listening to her father. Though, if Kelly had to guess, he'd say Caity had been listening this entire time. "Remember tomorrow, you're gonna get to see your little brother or sister?"
"Yeah!" Caitlyn replied brightly. "Me and Sof get to see the baby!" She added on, the girl just as happy as she had been since Matt and Gabby first told them they'd be going to this appointment.
"Are you excited, Caity?"
"Yeah!" She repeated herself, shifting around in her seat. "I can't wait to see my little brother, or sister. My second little brother or sister." She spoke with a giggle, Matt unable to stop his smile from widening while he watched his oldest daughter.
"Well, I'm sure you guys will have a lot of fun. I can't wait to hear all about it." Severide said, Caitlyn grinning eagerly before she nodded.
"I can tell you everything, okay?" She assured him with a serious tone in her voice, causing both men to laugh before Severide reached over to pat the top of her head.
"Sounds like a plan, squirt."
Casey walked up to the office with Sofia in his grasp, the toddler's weight resting on his hip while he kept an arm underneath her, using his other hand to pull open the door before he stepped back to let Gabby and Caitlyn walk inside first. Their hands were latched together, like they had been the entire walk from the car as they stepped into the welcoming office, Caitlyn taking a moment to look at her new surroundings while Matt came in behind them.
The waiting room was rather empty, maybe just a handful or so of other women sitting around as the family of four, almost five, headed for a row of seats against the window. With the quiet feeling in the air, they had made quite the entrance when they came into the room, as even though they'd all been pretty silent it was hard for people not to pay attention to two small children entering an office. But Matt and Gabby weren't too focused on everyone else as they got the girls to their seats.
"Wow, it's so pretty." Caitlyn spoke as she looked out the window, the floor they were on giving her a better view of the city bustling below her.
"Yeah, it is… Can you sit down for me, baby?" Gabby asked her, dropping their conjoined hands to tap against the chair. Caitlyn complied immediately, the little girl climbing her way up into the seat and moving over to the side, before Matt sat Sofia down next to her in the same chair, the girls sharing their space easily while Sof's small hand instinctively reached out to grab ahold of Caity. "Alright, I'm gonna go get checked in.. You got them, babe?"
"Yeah, we're fine baby." He assured her, Gabby nodding softly and blowing him a quick kiss before she headed over towards the counter, leaving Matt alone with their two girls. With the relatively cold March chill in the air, they were both bundled up while they sat together, Matt placing his arm over the back of the chair they were in as Caitlyn's wide and interested eyes moved around the room.
There were a lot of people here that Caitlyn didn't recognize, but she was pretty intrigued by them, all the different families bringing a smile to her face before her gaze landed on one person in particular; the woman sitting directly across from them.
She was by herself, and looked to be a little younger than Gabby, but Caitlyn had certainly taken a liking to her as she couldn't help but stare at the woman. And she soon noticed.
"Hi." Caitlyn spoke up rather abruptly, Matt lifting his head to see his daughter now talking to the unnamed woman across from them. The same one who started to smile warmly at them. "My name's Caity, what's your name?" She asked her, letting her legs swing back and forth off the edge of the seat while Sofia continued to hold her hand.
"My name is Tiffany." She replied, Caitlyn's own grin widening as excitement flickered in her eyes.
"Hi Tiffany." She repeated, causing Matt to laugh just slightly while Tiffany's smile grew. "You're pretty." Caitlyn continued to compliment, the woman now blushing as she hadn't expected such sweet words from the six year old.
"Thank you, sweetheart." She responded, her genuine words prompting Caity to sit up a little straighter in her seat while she looked over her.
"Are you having a baby like Mommy?" Caitlyn then asked as she pointed over towards the desk where Gabby was waiting to be checked in. "Mommy's having a baby, she's over there."
"I see her, yeah. And yes, I am." She said, clearly engaged with the young girl while Caitlyn continued talking to her.
"That's so cool, baby's are so fun." Caity replied with a giggle. "Like when Sof was a baby, it was super fun. It's fun now too, but she takes more of my stuff now that's she two." Caitlyn explained to her, Tiffany letting out a soft laugh while she nodded.
"Is this your sister?" She asked, nodding towards the toddler sitting next to her before Caitlyn started to grin happily.
"Yeah! This is Sofia, she's my little sister." Caity spoke proudly while giving Sof's hand a gentle squeeze. "Sofi, can you say hi?" She asked, Sofia looking over towards the woman before smiling brightly, her free hand coming up into the air and waving at her.
"Hi." The two year old said after some direction from her sister, Tiffany's grin widening as she waved back at the both of them.
"Hi there Sofia." She replied, Sofia hiding her face shyly while Caitlyn giggled.
"She's so funny, but yeah she's my sister. And then my littler sister or brother is in Mommy's belly!" Caitlyn finished excitedly while Tiffany nodded, just before Gabby got back over to them with her papers. "Mommy, I made a new friend." She told her as Gabby sat down beside her, the soft look on her face growing while she looked between Caitlyn and Tiffany.
"You did?"
"Yeah! She's having a baby like you and Daddy." Caitlyn said, Gabby nodding while she glanced back to the woman, her lips turning up into an easy smile.
"You have the most adorable little girls, they're beautiful." She flattered, Matt and Gabby both grinning before the former spoke up.
"Thank you." Matt replied, looking between his three girls before his gaze moved back to Tiffany and her very pregnant belly. "...Is this your first?"
A small smile graced her face, her hand moving to rest over her expanding stomach before she nodded. "Yes, it is… Your third, I'm guessing?"
"Fifth." Matt answered easily, as even though their first two children weren't with them anymore, they would never be forgotten. Because as far as he and Gabby were concerned, they still very much thought of their first baby and Louie as theirs, despite it not being permanent.
"Wow." Tiffany breathed out with a smile. "And I'm sitting here worried about one."
The adults shared a laugh, Gabby's hand subconsciously moving over their child while she leaned back into her seat. "I'm sure you'll do great." Matt encouraged, Tiffany nodding back at him with an appreciatively look on her face before the door to the the office opened.
"Tiffany James?" One of the nurses called, Matt and Gabby watching as the woman across from them began to gather her things before slowly standing up.
"It was nice to meet you all." She told them, Sofia waving to her once more while Caitlyn gave her a beaming smile.
"You too!" Caity replied happily.
"And congratulations." Gabby added on, Tiffany nodding back at her as to say the same before she headed off towards the nurse, leaving the family of four on their own to wait their turn.
"She was nice." Caitlyn commented, Gabby nodding in agreement as she ran her hand through her daughter's blonde hair.
"She was, she was really nice." Dawson agreed, kissing her on the head before she returned her attention to the paperwork that needed to be filled out.
Over the next twenty minutes or so, the Casey family stayed in their seats, Matt helping to keep the girls occupied while Gabby filled out everything she needed to, Caitlyn and Sofia both taking to sitting backwards in their chair and watching the street beneath them before it was time for Gabby to go to the back.
Since they hadn't brought the girls with them to one of Gabby's appointments before, aside from when Sofia was a small baby, Casey decided to hold them both while they got his wife's height and weight checked, the parents wanting to make sure they weren't in the way of anyone trying to do their job. Though everyone at the practice seemed to fall in love with them, as the Casey family was still a special story to most of the people who worked here. Especially those who had been around before Sofia was first born.
After a couple minutes they had managed to get all the numbers they needed from Gabby, before the four of them were led back to one of the exam rooms, Matt carrying both of their daughters across the room while Dawson stepped in behind them.
"Alright Gabby, from what I understand today's a pretty simple exam for you. So you won't need to change." The nurse instructed. "Just get up onto the table and Dr. Tanner will be in shortly."
"Thank you." Gabby replied, earning a nod from her before she stepped out of the room and closed the door, giving them privacy as Gabby got onto the familiar bed.
"Mama." Sofia spoke as they stood next to her, her little arms reaching out towards Gabby while Matt kept her balanced in his arms.
"Come here princess, you can sit with me." She murmured, taking the toddler from Matt and settled her in her lap. It was a little different than they were used to with Gabby's growing stomach, but Sofia still curled into her all the same, her tiny hand cradling the bump while her head rested against her mom's chest. "Oh, my sweet girl." Gabby spoke as Matt placed Caitlyn down onto the ground.
The six year old was much more eager than her younger sister, Gabby and Matt sure that had everything to do with her understanding of what they were actually doing here. But regardless, they could sense how excited Caitlyn was for this as she moved to stand between Matt and the exam table, her hands coming up to grip it while her head peeked over the side.
She took a few moments to look around, her curious eyes moving between the different monitors and instruments throughout the room, Matt reaching down to rub his hand over her back before she finally spoke up. "...Is this where we see the baby?" She asked, Gabby nodding at her in response.
"It is, sweetheart." Matt replied, both parents seeing her face lighten up while she leaned back against her father's hand. "Your mom's doctor is gonna do what's called an ultrasound, and it'll help us see inside her belly. So we can see the baby." He explained further, Caitlyn taking in his words before she nodded.
"And we'll see if me and Sof are having another sissy or brother?" She questioned, her curious nature in full force as Gabby was the one to speak up this time.
"As long as she's able to see on the screen, yes we will." She told her, Caitlyn seemingly content with her answer as the smile never left her face, while she pushed herself up onto her tiptoes to help see over the table a little better.
"I'm so excited." She said, more to herself than anyone else while Gabby and Matt shared a smile, as they couldn't help but feel so incredibly grateful to have their kids here with them.
"We are too, baby." Matt eventually responded, leaning down to place a loving kiss to the top of her head just as they heard the door open, everyone glancing over to see Dr. Tanner step inside the room with a welcoming smile on her face.
"Well, I heard we had a full house today." She greeted, Gabby nodding back at her with a smile while Caitlyn looked up at her dad before returning her attention to the unfamiliar woman in front of her. "It's good to see you again, Gabby… Can't believe it's been a month already."
"I know, it's so crazy." She breathed out, rubbing her hand over Sofia's head as the toddler finally realized there was another person in the room, Sof giving her a beaming and toothy smile while Dr. Tanner came to stand in front of the family of four.
"Hi little Sofia." Dr. Tanner said first, the sound of her name causing the girl to smile wider before soft giggles left her lips. "Yeah, you're a happy kid, aren't you? I know you probably don't remember me, but you and I go way back." She told her, the two year old continuing to laugh solely from the attention she was getting while Gabby smiled in agreement.
"Yeah, Sof you have no idea how important this woman is to us, do you?" Gabby asked lightheartedly.
"No, I think she's just happy to be here." Dr. Tanner joked, the room sharing a laugh before the doctor moved her attention to the older child in the room, Caity's eyes still watching her while she stood with her father. "And you must be Caitlyn."
The child's smile widened when she spoke, before she began to nod enthusiastically. "I am." She replied, looking up to her dad once more as Matt nodded, all the adults in the room seeing Caitlyn become more and more comfortable with every second that passed by. "Are you my Mommy's doctor?"
"I am." She replied, as Matt started to rub over Caity's back once more.
"Yeah Caitlyn, this is the woman who helped your Momma when Sofia was born." Casey told her, causing the six year old's features to soften as she looked between her sister and Dr. Tanner. "She delivered your sister." He added on, before quickly moving past the memory, Matt not wanting to focus on the hard moments of that day.
"Wow." Caity breathed out, her reaction causing Dr. Tanner to smile before she sat down on the stool close to the exam table. "And you're gonna help my little brother or sister?"
"I am."
"Aww." The young girl cooed, earning smiles from the adults around her before her eyes moved back to her mom's stomach. "Do you know if I'm having a little brother or sister yet?" She asked seconds later, her eagerness hard to miss as a soft laugh left Dr. Tanner's throat.
"Not yet… I need to go over a few things with your mom first, and then we'll do an exam. And I'm not entirely sure if we'll be able to tell the gender of your sibling, but I'm gonna try, okay?" The doctor replied before Caitlyn nodded.
"Yeah, we explained it to them." Casey supplemented while Dr. Tanner pulled up Gabby's chart. "That we might not be able to tell today, if the little one doesn't cooperate… But we wanted them here just in case. So they could be a part of this." Matt explained to her, though he didn't need to.
"I completely understand, and I'm happy you did." She replied with a gentle smile, her warm eyes moving back to the young girls in front of her. "I'm very glad to have you girls here today."
"Me too." Caitlyn agreed, shifting her weight between the balls of her feet. "Mommy always talks about going to see the baby with Daddy, and now it's fun cause me and Sof get to be here." She stated, her concise words amusing as Dr. Tanner gave her another nod.
"Well, you're definitely right about that. It is fun to have you here." She replied genuinely, reaching her hand out to pat Caitlyn's shoulder as it was clear how happy her words made the young girl, before she eventually looked up at her patient. "Is it okay if we go over a few things real quick, before getting the ultrasound?" She asked Dawson, the woman soon giving her a nod as the doctor pulled up her chart. "Alright, how have you been feeling since I last saw you?"
"Bigger." Gabby deadpanned, Dr. Tanner chuckling while Matt shook his head in amusement. "A lot bigger."
"Well, as you know that'll happen." Dr. Tanner replied lightly, before glancing back down to the tablet in her hands. "Other than that, how are you?"
"I've been good." Dawson told her, her words a bit more serious than they had been seconds prior. "I've been feeling a lot more energized, overall. Some days are exhausting, and I still need to take a lot of naps, but I'm feeling good."
"That's great to hear." She responded, Matt nodding in agreement. "Any pain or anything?"
"Here and there." Gabby said with a shrug.
"Is it anything out of the norm?"
"No, it's not." She elaborated. "It's the things I remember from last time, where my stomach's growing and everything. But it's not anything too bad, just some discomfort here and there."
"No bleeding or spotting?" Dr. Tanner checked.
"Nothing like that."
"What about cramping?"
"Only in my legs sometimes, but not in my stomach." Gabby explained.
"Good, that's good." Dr. Tanner spoke softly while dictating a few things in Gabby's chart. "What about you, Matt? Anything you've noticed?" She asked him, both she and Dawson glancing up at him before he shook his head.
"Nothing I can think of." He replied easily. "Like she said, there's been the usual stuff. That round ligament pain you've told us about, that she dealt with last time. And she's mentioned some soreness."
"But it hasn't been persistent?"
"No." Gabby clarified, Dr. Tanner nodding once more while looking over her notes. "All of it's been pretty normal for me."
"And you're taking it easy?"
"I am." Gabby replied, with Matt nodded in agreement. "I'm not pushing myself too hard, or overworking myself… I'm just doing what I feel capable of. Then when I do need a break, Matt's there to help. He's always there to help." She spoke softly, the smile on Casey's face growing as he reached his hand out to rest over the back of her head.
"Well, you know I'm happy with that." Dr. Tanner replied, prompting them both to nod.
"Daddy's been helping Mommy a lot." Caitlyn added on, her little ears picking up everything they were saying as Dr. Tanner refocused her attention on the six year old.
"Has he?" She asked back, wanting to engage with her as Caitlyn's smile grew.
"Mhmm! He always helps Mommy, and lets her sleep. And me and Sof have been helping too! We've been really good." She boasted, Casey and Gabby both chuckling at her excited words.
"That's great to hear, Caitlyn. Thank you for helping your mom… As her doctor, I'm so glad she has you and Sof looking out for her." Dr. Tanner told her, seeing the beaming look in the young girl's eyes before she started to nod.
"And Daddy, too." Caity reminded her, earning a smile from the doctor.
"Yeah, and your dad, too." She replied, seeing Caitlyn shift on her feet excitedly before she looked back up between Matt and Gabby. "Well, so far everything I'm hearing sounds good… I'm glad you're doing so well, and that you're taking it easy. You're doing everything you're supposed to right now, and that's all I can ask for." She told her, Gabby smiling gently before she nodded. "Now, how about we get a look at this baby?"
"Yay!" Caity cheered.
"Baby." Sofia repeated with a slobbery grin while rubbing her hand over Gabby's stomach, the girls' reactions pulling more laughs from the adults in the room before Dr. Tanner nodded.
"Yes, we're gonna see the baby." She replied while standing up from her seat, her gaze then finding Gabby. "You two might have the sweetest little girls I've ever met." She said, the parents sharing a smile as they knew that, given her profession, that was no small feat.
"Well, you won't hear me arguing with you there." Casey responded lightly, Dr. Tanner shaking her head in amusement before they all started to get Gabby ready for the ultrasound.
While Dr. Tanner began setting up the machine, Matt took a reluctant Sofia from Gabby's lap, the toddler clearly not thrilled when she was taken away from her mother. But once she got settled on her father's hip and could still see Gabby, she calmed down a bit, Matt then helping Caitlyn get up onto the stationary stool Dr. Tanner had gotten for the oldest daughter to stand on, while Gabby began to adjust her clothing. She had pulled her shirt up and unbuttoned her pants, giving Dr. Tanner all the access she needed as Matt was focused on situating the girls.
After a few minutes they seemed to all be ready, Casey standing beside the exam table with Sofia in his grasp, his body directly behind Caity just in case she accidentally fell from the stool while he kept his hand on the top of Gabby's head, Matt content being near all his girls.
"Alright, you know the drill… I'm gonna check over a few things then you all can see them." Dr. Tanner explained, Gabby and Matt both nodding. "This is gonna be a little cold, Gabby."
It took about five minutes or so for Dr. Tanner to get all the images and information she needed, Caitlyn and Sofia both behaving well and keeping relatively quiet while she worked to not disturb anything, while Dr. Tanner occasionally moved the doppler over Gabby's lower stomach.
"They're measuring well, still well within the targets for their age… And everything is developing as it should." She explained to them, her eyes focused on the screen while Caitlyn looked up towards her mom.
"The baby is good?" She asked, only half understanding what the woman was saying as Gabby's face softened before she nodded.
"They are, they're great sweetheart." She assured her, Caity's smile widening before she looked back at what Dr. Tanner was doing, the girl completely captivated by this entire process.
"And right here, if you girls want to listen…" Dr. Tanner started, regaining their attention just seconds before a loud, steady thumping filled the room. A sound that immediately brought tears to Gabby's eyes as they listened to their baby's heartbeat. "That's your little sibling."
A heavy gasp left Caitlyn's lips, Sofia's eyes growing in excitement as she was just enthralled by the steady sound.
"That's their heartbeat."
"That's the baby." Caity repeated in wonder, her body leaning back slightly against her dad while her eyes were focused on Gabby's stomach.
"Mhmm, that's them." Dr. Tanner said, Caitlyn's smile covering her entire face before she looked up towards Matt.
"Daddy, that's the baby!" She spoke, completely giddy as Matt's own grin widened, this moment almost surreal to him while he started to nod.
He and Gabby knew they'd be happy that they brought the girls, but right now this was so much better than they even could've imagined, as getting to experience this with Caitlyn and Sofia was one of the best feelings in the world. And after once glance to his wife, if the tears threatening to fall from Gabby's eyes were any indication Matt knew she was feeling the exact same way.
"It is, honey. That's your little baby brother or sister." He replied after a couple seconds, elated laughs leaving Caity's lips as she faced forward again.
"And here, you can see them." Dr. Tanner continued on while turning the screen towards the family, Caitlyn's eyes immediately moving up to the monitor as she was desperate to see her sibling. "It's a little hard to make out because they're so small, but if you look here," She instructed, while pointing up to the baby. "You can see their head, and their body… They're all curled up in there." She said in terms Caitlyn could understand.
"Aww." Caitlyn responded after a moment, it clearly taking her some time to make out what she was looking at. But once she did, it was like she couldn't turn away. "They're so cute." She cooed, happy tears shining in her eyes as Dr. Tanner gave her a nod. "I love them."
A lone tear slid down Gabby's cheek, her smile so wide it almost hurt as Caitlyn continued to look at her younger sibling. And Sofia was too, but at her age it was a little harder for her to understand what was happening.
"They love you, too… You and Sof both." Matt responded as he patted his hand over Sofia's leg. "They love their older sisters."
Caitlyn nodded contently, her eyes staying locked on the screen while Gabby's gaze moved between their newest baby and her family standing in this room, her heart so full of love it felt like it could nearly burst at any second, as this was by far one of the best moments they'd experienced as a family.
And it was about to get even better.
"...Are you all ready to find out what you're having?" Dr. Tanner asked them once they finished their moment, Gabby's watery eyes widening before snapping back to her doctor, who was only nodding at her with a warm smile.
"You can tell?"
"I can tell." She assured them, Gabby letting out a heavy breath before looking up to Matt, where her husband nodded brightly.
"I'm ready." He answered her silent question, his eyes already shining in anticipation while he stroked his thumb along the top of her head.
"Okay." She replied, for both Matt and Dr. Tanner as they looked back to the monitor, waiting for the next words to come from the doctor's mouth.
"Congratulations, you're having a baby girl."
Gabby's breath caught in her throat, her jaw trembling almost instantly as a rush of intense emotion flooded her system, the elation she was feeling consuming her while more and more tears filled her eyes.
"A girl?" Caitlyn was the first to speak up, her bright words prompting Dr. Tanner to nod as the child's body was practically shaking with excitement. "I have another sister?!"
"You do, she's a girl… A healthy, incredible little girl." She said for all of them, tears now flowing freely down Gabby's cheeks as she was sure her heart had never felt as full as it did in this moment.
But that was only until she looked up at her husband, as the second she saw him a fresh wave of emotion ran through her at the complete and total joy he was feeling. It was plain as day in his eyes, as he himself was openly crying, his smile as bright as she'd ever seen as his focus was locked on the screen in front of them.
On their daughter.
And that alone caused more tears to fall, as deep down she knew this is what he wanted. He wanted to have another little girl, this is what he had dreamed of.
He would love any child they had, unconditionally. There were no doubts in her mind about that. But she knew him, she knew what this pregnancy meant to him. What having another girl meant to him. And with how fiercely and courageously he loved their daughters, Gabby was well aware of how he wanted to experience that all over again with this baby.
"Matt…" Gabby breathed out, snapping him out of his headspace as he locked eyes with her, before the smile on his face grew even more.
"We're having a girl." He spoke, Gabby releasing a watery laugh before she nodded brightly.
"We're having a girl." She repeated, seeing the new tears track down his skin before he leaned over to press a heavy, passion-filled kiss to her lips. One that said more than words ever could as there was nothing but pure excitement between them.
"Mommy's having a girl!" Caitlyn cheered as they pulled apart, Sofia clapping her hands together excitedly as Caity turned her body to try and face both her parents. "Mommy, Sof and I are having a sister!"
"You are, baby. You're having another sister." She replied, none of them able to stop their tears while Caitlyn reached her hand out to rest over the side of Gabby's stomach.
"I love her so much." Caitlyn continued on, her voice a little shaky as her emotions overwhelmed her. "I love my sissy." She added before digging her head into Matt's stomach, the oldest Casey daughter unable to stop her cries from how glad she was. And it was a feeling Matt and Gabby understood completely, as they were all experiencing it right this very second.
Because they were having another girl. Another amazing, and beautiful baby girl.
And they couldn't have been happier.
