Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 15 of God of Lies and Mischief and the Woman of Many Faces. Thank you to those who have left reviews and have stayed with this story. There are only a few chapters left of the Avengers Movie. I can't wait to show you all what happens and what is to come in future chapters. I know I still have quite a bit of a way to go for Loki and Everleigh to end up together. And it shouldn't take too long honestly since I kind of do have an idea to run with. Hopefully you all will enjoy this next chapter. Without further ado Chapter 15. Enjoy!
Chapter 15
Everleigh sat in one of the chairs looking at her blood stained hands as Steve, Fury, and Tony all stood at the table next to her.
Fury pulled out a handful of cards out of his pocket. "These were in Phil Coulson's jacket. Guess he never did get you to sign them." He said as he scattered them onto the table some were very wet with blood. "We're dead in the air up here. Our communications, location of the cube, Banner, Thor. I got nothing for you. Lost my one good eye. Think I had that coming." Fury began to make his way around the table to Steve and Tony. "Yes, we were going to build an
arsenal with the Tesseract. I never put all my chips on that number, though, because I was playing something even riskier. There was an idea, Stark knows this, called the Avengers Initiative." Fury reached a chair between the two men. "The idea was to bring together a
group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea, in heroes."
Tony got up to his feet and walked out of the room.
"Well, it's an old fashioned notion."
Everleigh got up to her feet and slowly walked out of the room wrapping her arms around herself as she walked. She knew that the cards that Fury had thrown onto the table stained in Coulson's blood weren't on his person. They had been put away, but Fury had other ideas to try and get things to go a way that was hopefully good. She went to the room where Tony had gone to and leaned against the rail as she looked out at the clouds.
Tony stood looking to where the cylindrical glass cage used to be.
Steve came into the room and looked at Tony and Everleigh. "Was he married?" He asked softly.
"No. There was a uh- cellist, I think." Tony said thinking.
"Yes, his girlfriend… is a cellist…" Everleigh said softly, crossing her arms sniffling a little.
"I'm sorry. He seemed like a good man."
"He was an idiot."
The two men moved slowly towards one another.
"Why? For believing?"
"For taking on Loki alone."
"I was there… I couldn't stop him." Everleigh said softly.
"He was doing his job."
"He was out of his league. He should have waited. He should have…"
"Sometimes there isn't a way out, Tony."
"Right. How did that work for him?"
"Is this the first time you've lost a soldier?"
Everleigh's hands dropped to her sides as she looked up at the Captain as Tony whirled around looking at the star spangled man.
"We are not soldiers! I'm not marching to Fury's fife."
"Neither am I. He's got the same blood on his hands that Loki does, but right now we gotta put that behind us and get this done. Now Loki needs a power source, if we can put together a list."
Tony looked down to the place where Coulson had fallen, there was a dent in the wall. "He made it personal."
"That's not the point."
"That is the point. That's Loki's point. He hit us all right where we live. Why?"
"To tear us apart."
"There has to be more to it. I was under his control for a short time…"
"Divide and conquer is great but- he knows he has to take us out to win, right? That's what he
wants. He wants to beat us, he wants to be seen doing it. He wants an audience."
"Right. I caught his act in Stuttgart."
"Yeah. That's just previews, this is- this is opening night. And Loki, he's a full-tail diva. He wants flowers, he wants parades, he wants a monument built to the skies with his name plastered… Son of-a-bitch."
"Looks like we have our answer… the tower."
AVENGERS
Everleigh came up behind Natasha and Clint with Steve who was suited up.
Natasha got up to her feet.
"Time to go."
"Go where?"
"I'll tell you on the way. Can you fly one of those jets?"
Clint came from the restroom, drying his hands. "I can."
Steve looked at Natasha, who nodded her head. "Got a suit?"
"Yeah." Clint said with a nod of his head.
"Then suit up."
Everleigh moved towards the door. "They'll try to stop us, but we're not going to stop. We need to stop Loki before this invasion starts." Everleigh said as she opened the door. She slowed looking back at Clint. "Glad to have you back, Clint."
Clint smiled at Everleigh knowing that she missed him. Clint adjusted his hearing aid. "Glad to be back, kid."
Everleigh smiled and headed out of the room heading to where her locker was to gather the guns she was going to need. She turned around and met up with Steve, Natasha, and Clint walking beside Steve, who was leading them through the lower hanger bay. They walked onto one of the jets.
"Hey, you guys aren't authorized to be in here." The guy said.
"Son, just don't!" Steve said, cutting off the man as they took their places on the jet.
Everleigh pursed her lips together as Clint took his spot to fly the jet out of there.
"You aren't going to try to transfer yourself to where we need to go, kid?" Clint said as he started the plane up.
Everleigh let out a soft laugh. "You know my gifts only get me so far… and with it being New York, probably not the best place to appear out of nowhere." She said, giving Clint a look of mischief. "You know that was how I ended up on the radar before being stupid. This time I'm not going to be that stupid to do something like that."
Clint suddenly took the plane from bay six following Tony's flying suit. "Suit yourself kid."
Everleigh rolled her eyes slightly as they were off towards New York.
"You're thinking something, kid." Clint said as he flew.
"Always. Once we're in New York, I think I'm going to try and find Loki and try to get him to stop this attack. Something felt off."
"Felt off?"
"Something is meshing with his magic and it feels ominous."
"You felt it? Why didn't you say something sooner?"
Everleigh pursed her lips together. "He's the god of Mischief and Lies… why would someone of mischief and lies want to kill someone? Trick someone, yes, rule over a whole planet… not likely." Everleigh said thinking out loud. "I mean come on Clint you met me… and I caused mischief in the beginning."
Clint let out a sigh and shook his head lightly. "Yeah I remember and I had to tell Fury to take a chance on you. You're good at what you do when you aren't causing some sort of trouble."
Everleigh let out a soft laugh. "I grew out of it Clint. But what if Loki was the same way we were?"
"Mind controlled?"
"It's possible."
Clint pursed his lips together in thought, not liking the idea that Everleigh could be correct that Loki had no control of what he was doing and if that was the case, who was controlling him?
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
This is the end of Chapter 15. I hope that you guys enjoyed this chapter. We got a little bit of a backstory of Everleigh. Not a lot but there are some and more will be added as time goes on. She'll become more in depth as the story goes on. There will be history in there of her being experimented on and what not. Hopefully that will be some point in this story. Hopefully it won't be too much longer until that's introduced. Please leave a review and let me know what you think. I hope to have the next chapter out soon. Until next time.
