Chapter 34

Nastasha looked into the backseat at Everleigh who was looking out the window with her eyes glossy. Natasha pursed her lips together before finally deciding to speak. "So where did you learn to steal a car?"

Everleigh turned her head to look at Natasha. "Before I was invited to stay in Shield." She said softly before looking out the window again. Her arms wrapped around herself as she took a breath. "And we're borrowing it."

"Take your feet off the dash." Steve ordered Natasha.

Natasha took her feet off of the dash. "Alright, I have a question for you, oh, which you do not have to answer. I feel like if you don't answer it though, you're kind of answering it, you know?"

"What?"

"Was that your first kiss since 1945?"

"That bad, huh?"

"I didn't say that."

"Well, it kind of sounds like that's what you're saying."

"No, I didn't. I just wondered how much practice you've had."

"You don't need practice."

"Everybody needs practice."

"It was not my first kiss since 1945. I'm ninety-five, I'm not dead."

"Nobody special, though?"

Steve let out a soft chuckle. "Believe it or not, it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience."

"Well, that's alright, you just make something up."

"What, like you?"

"I don't know. The truth is a matter of circumstances, it's not all things to all people all the time. And neither am I."

"That's a tough way to live."

"It's a good way not to die, though."

"You know, it's kind of hard to trust someone when you don't know who that someone really is."

"Yeah. Who do you want me to be?"

"How about a friend?"

Natasha let out a soft laugh shaking her head lightly. "Well, there's a chance you might be in the wrong business, Rogers."

"Definitely the wrong business." Everleigh said softly. "Making friends in this business. It doesn't end well for anyone." She looked away as a few tears slid down her cheeks remembering how she was trying to befriend Loki, but her feelings somehow went deeper than what she wanted them to and she ended up getting hurt when he had lost his life and it made her heart hurt.

Steve looked back in the rearview mirror and saw the tears sliding down Everleigh's cheeks. He went to speak up and ask her if she was alright but he pulled up the car outside of an abandoned military base. "This is it."

"The file came from these coordinates." Natasha said, looking at the old base.

"So did I."

CAWSCAWS

They walked around the base trying to pinpoint where the signal came from.

"This camp is where I was trained." Steve explained to the two of them.

"Changed much?" Natasha questioned looking over at Steve.

"A little."

Everleigh pursed her lips softly as she looked around.

"This is a dead end. Zero heat signature, zero waves, not even radio. Whoever wrote the file must have used a router to throw people off."

Steve noticed a building ahead of them.

"What is it?"

They walked over to the building slowly.

"Army regulations forbid storing ammunition within five hundred yards of the barracks. This building is in the wrong place." Steve said before opening the lock with his shield and they went inside.

When they turned on the lights they noticed right away that it was a Shield office.

"This is SHIELD."

Everleigh looked around curiously. She didn't think that Shield would open up on an old military base.

"Maybe where it started." Steve said softly looking around.

They entered another room where they came upon old framed portraits of Howard Stark, Peggy Carter, and Colonel Phillips.

"There's Stark's father." Everleigh said softly moving slowly towards the photo now noticing where Tony had gotten his looks from.

"Howard." Steve murmured softly.

"Who's the girl?" Natasha questioned.

Steve didn't give Natasha an answer and turned away to walk further down the room and stopped by a massive bookshelf. "If you're already working in a secret office…" He pushed the bookshelf and it opened to reveal an elevator behind it. "Why do you need to hide the elevator?"

They went down in the elevator which took them into a room with a bunch of old looking computers.

Everleigh blinked a few times as she looked around.

"This can't be the data-point, this technology is ancient." Natasha looked around and noticed a small flash drive port. She slowly put the flash drive into the port which activated the ancient computer in the room.

"Initiate system?"

Natasha pursed her lips as typed into the keyboard. "Y-E-S, spells yes." Natasha smiled as the old computer started to boot up. ""Shall we play a game?" It's from a movie that…"

Everleigh let out a soft chuckle.

"Yeah, I saw it." Steve said as he looked over at Natasha out of the corner of his eyes.

"Rogers, Steven. Born, 1918. Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna. Born, 1984. Vincin, Everleigh, Born 1987." A heavily accented voice rang out.

They saw an old camera moving above them as it analyzed them.

"It's some kind of a recording." Natasha muttered softly.

"I am not a recording, Fräulein. I may not be the man I was when the Captain took me prisoner in 1945, but I am."

The computer showed an old photo of Dr. Arnim Zola.

"Do you know this thing?"

"Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for the Red Skull. He's been dead for years."

"First correction, I am Swiss. Second, look around you. I have never been more alive. In 1972 I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body, my mind, however, that was worth saving on two hundred thousand feet of data banks. You are standing in my brain."

"How did you get here?"

"Invited."

"It was Operation Paperclip after World War II. SHIELD recruited German scientists with strategic value." Natasha explained to them.

"They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own."

"HYDRA died with the Red Skull." Steve said his concern was beginning to grow.

"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place."

"Prove it."

"Accessing archives."

The computer then showed them old footage of Johann Schmidt. How the original Shield Founders came to be.

"HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realize, was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist. The war taught us much. Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly. After the war, SHIELD was founded and I was recruited. The new HYDRA grew. A beautiful parasite inside SHIELD. For seventy years HYDRA has been secretly feeding crisis, reaping war. And when history did not cooperate, history was changed."

"That's impossible, SHIELD would have stopped you." Natasha said her brows furrowed together in thought.

Everleigh pursed her lips together. She didn't like how this was beginning to turn out.

"Accidents will happen."

The computer showed them Hydra had killed Howard and Maria Stark making it look like a car accident along with the recent death of Fury.

Everleigh let out a sharp gasp seeing Fury's death on the computer. Her heart rammed in her chest as sweat beaded on her forehead.

"HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom to gain its security. Once the purification process is complete, HYDRA's new world order will arise. We won, Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your Life; a zero sum."

In Steve's anger he smashed the computer screen.

Another screen began to work.

"As I was saying…"

"What's on this drive?" Steve questioned, demanding an answer.

"Project Insight requires insight. So I wrote an algorithm."

"What kind of algorithm? What does it do?"

"The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it."

Suddenly the doors began to close.

Steve tried to stop it by throwing his shield in between the doors to keep it open but he was too late.

"Steve, we got a bogey. Short range ballistic. 30 seconds tops."

"Who fired it?" Steve questioned Natasha.

"S.H.I.E.L.D."

"I am afraid I have been stalling, Captain. Admit it, it's better this way. We're both of us...out of time."

Steve quickly noticed a small opening on the ground. He threw the metal door aside and quickly just as the place exploded he threw himself, Natasha and Everleigh into the hole and protected them with his shield. He then carefully got them out from under the rubble of the building. He held up Everleigh who had a gash on her forehead from him throwing her into the hole. "I'm sorry Leigh." He said as they moved out of the area so the Strike team didn't notice them there.

Everleigh grumbled a little as she staggered next to Steve. "You could've been a little bit lighter with the throwing." She said as she felt his arm go around her to keep her on her feet.
