Home visit and an Unexpected Addition

NETHERLANDS (Some distance away from Meppel) – 2018(Previous era)

The train was slowly chugging along the Dutch countryside. Since it was January, mostly the surroundings were filled with snow. But that didn't undermine its beauty, if only it enhanced it further with frozen lakes and fields with trees covered in snow. Inside one of the first-class cabins sat two men, the younger one was in his teens but had a bandaged forehead and his left arm was in a cast, while the other one was in his early twenties.

"Seems like our stop." commented the older man.

"Hmm." acknowledged the boy as he started packing their stuff up for deboarding.

"Take it easy Kevin, your wounds have still not healed up. Himeko was worrying like a mother hen when we set out the day before yesterday. If your wounds get worse, I'm going to get the beating." Said the man.

"…" the boy Kevin said nothing.

"At least say something, and stop sulking, you are going to visit Griseo. You wouldn't want her to be sad right."

"Then help me aniki." the boy finally said a complete sentence.

"Sure" said the man named Ato as he helped Kevin pack up as the train rolled into the station.

After the mission in the German countryside, Kevin was given a month off for his rest and recuperation. He suspected that this was the work of Himeko on some level, but couldn't refuse as the order came from the general himself, and the general called the shots in Moths. So begrudgingly Kevin accepted his said vacation, it was also the time when Ato took the next two weeks off to be with his family for the new year's. As there were no immediate threats, for the time being, the general approved this as well, also considering Ato's contribution in the recent deployment in the mission in South Africa.

So as the train halted on the station, they got off and made their way to the parking lot where one of Ato's friends was waiting for him.

"Hoe gaat het, Ato?" said the man with honey-colored hair and freckles on his face.

"Goed en jij, Hans?"

"Just the same my friend, work's been piling up more than ever since it's the first months. And all this snow isn't making it easier to go to work."

"I always told you to go to a good company in Amsterdam, but you had to stick around here."

"What can I say, I love the food of the local inn too much to miss it for some extra income. Don't say that you don't miss it." Said the man slightly elbowing Ato.

"you said it my friend. Nothing beats home." Said Ato smiling.

It was at this time that the man turned to Kevin and said:

"Oh, sorry for not introducing myself, my name's Hans Jansen. I'm here this old man's childhood friend." The man introduced himself.

"Kevin Kaslana."

"Oh, so you are the protégé that Ato keeps talking about. I have heard you are one of the top members of the company that Ato work in. But how they could employ a child like you barely in his teens."

"Circumstances." Kevin elaborated no further.

"ooookay." Said the man quite skeptical.

"Hey let's go already, I'm freezing outside here and my princess is waiting for me." Complained Ato.

"Okay, okay let's go. You become a totally different person when it comes to your daughter."

"She's my little princess, of course."

"So what will you do when she will get married one day?" joked Hans

"Over my dead body." Said Ato at once shocking Kevin.

'If only he was this serious at work' he thought.

As the car made its way through the snowy streets Hans asked the question that was on his mind.

"So, Kevin what's with the bandages and the cast."

"Accident at work." was Kevin's curt reply.

"Is that so?" Hans wanted to ask further but couldn't as Ato's home came into view.

"Okay, here we are. Man, you are lucky to have such a caring wife and good daughter waiting for you at home. My son throws a tantrum every time around this time of the year asking me to buy the latest version of the toy that he likes."

"Well bad luck to you I guess, none can compare to my princess after all." Ato said proudly. At this Hans just rolled his eyes.

Kevin watched this exchange with silence. He didn't understand any of the sentiments that the two persons before him were sharing. For him, the only reality was of blood, pain and death. He had already lost everything and no amount of wishing will bring it back. The only thing left for him now was to purge the Honkai from the earth. But he decided that protecting others in the process wasn't a bad thing in itself, after all it was that person's dearest wish; and he will honor it till the end.

"Okay then see you at dinner on the coming Sunday Ato."

"Yeah, see you then Hans."

The two watched as the car pulled away from them and disappeared further down the road.

"So, then Kevin let's go inside?" asked Ato.

"Yeah." said Kevin.

Griseo waited for her papa to come home. It was already the day that he promised that he will come, and he will bring Kevin nii-nii with him. Nii-Nii had only visited very few times, but whenever he did, he would spend time with her, tell her stories and bring her favorite sweets. Although he did not speak very much, he would let her hug him and pat her head which made her happy. She didn't like many people outside her family but Aunt Himeko and Kevin Nii-Nii were special.

As she was thinking about when they would come the doorbell rang. She practically ran the entire way downstairs to open the door, but her hands couldn't reach it. She tried a few more times but the result was still the same. She was then disheartened and small tears appeared in the corner of her eyes.

"uuu…"

"Now, now Griseo don't cry, you want to welcome Kevin Nii-Nii with a smile, right?" said a kind voice from behind her.

"Mama." Griseo said looking at a woman with brown hair a kind face and soft violet eyes. She was wearing a turtle-neck sweater and long skirt. Over that she was wearing an apron indicating she was working in the kitchen.

"Let's open the door and welcome them in."

"Hmm." Said Griseo wiping her eyes and smiling.

At this, the doorbell rang again to which her mama moved to open the door. As she opened it, she heard her mother speaking

"Welcome home dear."

"I'm home my queen."

Smooch

"Oh my, Griseo is still watching us."

"Haha, maybe so. Come here princess, Papa's home."

"Papa." Griseo ran toward her father and hugged him. Ato lifted her and started spinning with her in his arms.

"Giggle, papa wewcom home."

"I'm back my little princess, how have you been?"

"I hab been a good girl as you said, papa. I hab learnd all the diffelent wurds that mama has taught. And I hab made many fweinds in scool too."

"That's my girl, I knew you were the best."

Griseo then started to look for her Nii-Nii behind papa but couldn't find him, so she asked

"Papa, were is Nii-Nii?"

"I'm sorry princess, I asked him to come with me many times but he never listened to me." Ato frowned.

At this Griseo became sad, she had waited the entire week for her nii-nii to come home, so she could tell him of all the good things she did this year, and then let him pat her head afterward. She was extremely disappointed and sad that he will not be here with her when she waited for him for so long. Her sadness reflected on her face when she started to cry on her papa's shoulder

"Sniff... sniff… but he pwomised. Waa."

"It's not nice to make your daughter cry on the first month of the year itself aniki. Do you want to get beat up by Clara-san again?" a new voice said, a voice she knew even though she heard it only a few times, and true enough coming in the door was her beloved Kevin Nii-Nii.

"Nii-Nii." shouted Griseo extremely happy and she got down from her father's arm to go and hug him.

"Whoa there, easy." Said Ato before his ear was pulled by someone "ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow I'm sorry Clara."

"Hmph, you have some nerve, pulling that kind of prank on Griseo after knowing that she was looking forward to it so much. You can say your extra bacon goodbye tonight." Said Clara.

"Wait, you are joking right? Your husband came home after fighting for many months, this is not how you are going to punish him right, right?"

"Hmph."

"Wait, no not my extra meat, Noooo." cried Ato comically.

"You reap what you sow." said Clara with a tone of finality that made Ato fall to his knees.

"My meat. sob sob."

Meanwhile when Griseo hugged Kevin to greet him.

"Wewcom to our home Kebin Nii-Nii."

"Yeah." Kevin said patting her head, that's when she noticed his stiff left arm and his bandaged forehead.

"Eh? What happnd to Yur Arm? Why are you hwrt?"

"It's nothing Griseo." said Kevin nonchalantly.

"Lies, yu are hwrt. It pains so much, and swmthng habnd to yur arm."

"It's okay Griseo, as I said it's nothing and it doesn't hurt."

"Wy yur lying nii-nii, ids not okay. Yur hwrt badly and it hwrts so much." Griseo shook her head refusing to believe Kevin's words. She knew that it was impossible to not feel pain after getting hurt this badly. Even then her Nii-Nii was trying to brush it off and it hurt her.

"Sniff... sniff... waaaaa..." Griseo started crying and Kevin held her up in her arms ignoring his broken left one.

"Shhhh, don't cry, don't cry." Kevin tried to console her but to no avail.

By this time Clara had put her attention to Kevin and Griseo as she heard her daughter crying.

"Griseo, what happened dear? Why are you crying."

"hic... hic… Nii-Nii is hwrt and he is lying that ids owkay." said Griseo between her hiccups.

"Hurt, what do you- OH MY GOD KEVIN WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU? AND YOUR ARM IS-." panicked Clara as she saw Kevin's bandaged head and his Left arm in what appeared to be a cast.

"As I said to Griseo, it's nothing Clara-san." Kevin replied to the woman. But the woman was not convinced. She came and took Griseo into her arms so as to not put undue pressure on Kevin's hands any further.

"And pigs can fly. It's clear as day that you are not alright. And is that a cast on your left arm?" Clara asked in a serious tone tapping her foot, expecting an answer.

Kevin decided that keeping silent isn't going to do him any good and replied:

"Yes, my left arm is broken in three different places."

"Th-three places. How did this happen?" Clara asked agitatedly. No matter what, him getting this much hurt was not excusable.

"Mission." Kevin just said one word.

At this response, Clara was even more agitated. She turned around and asked with anger clear in her voice:

"Weren't you supposed to take care of him?"

"I couldn't as it was a mission assigned to his unit alone. I'm sorry Clara."

"But this doesn't justify him getting hurt this much. That's it, I've had enough. I'm going to come with you to talk with your boss to let Kevin go. No matter how much they are desperate, this doesn't justify sending him on such dangerous missions."

"Clara-san." Said Kevin in a calm voice "That is not your call to make. The path that I walk is of my own choosing, and I will walk it to the bitter end no matter what others say."

"Bitter end, what do you mean-"

"Think of what you will, but the fact remains that we are fighting a war, and there is no place for unnecessary kindness in a war." he said with eyes full of determination and resolve.

Clara was shocked as well as saddened. Even though she had not met him many times, she can clearly see that he carried great pain and sadness within his heart. She just wanted him to be free of this and live the life of an ordinary child. In whatever little time she had spent time with him, she had come to see him as a son and care for him. But seeing his expression now, she understood that she couldn't stop him even if she tried; however, she could still try to make him less reckless. Thinking this she sighed and said:

"Fine. I won't stop you, but promise me you will never get this hurt again?"

"…" Kevin remained silent. What could he say? When he knew how this was going to end for him.

"Kevin?" he saw Clara-san and Griseo looking at him expectantly. He finally relented giving a small sigh.

"I will try."

Clara was somewhat disappointed by the reply but realized that this was the best response he can give right now. Maybe when he found his other half, the reply would change, she hoped it to be the case.

"All right, enough of the drama, let's go inside. I'm freezing in these clothes." Ato said clearing the air and changing the topic.

"Okay, Kevin you can have the guest room down the hall upstairs. Change into your indoor clothes and keep your current clothes in the laundry basket in the room, I will collect them this night."

"You don't have to Clara-san."

"Oh hush, now off you go. Take a bath and come down, I have been preparing a feast for your coming all this morning."

"Thank you, Clara-san, I'm grateful." said Kevin as he started to carry the bags but was stopped by Clara.

"And what do you think you are doing carrying these heavy bags with your injuries, Kevin?"

"But they are not heavy." Kevin tried to protest.

"Shush. You are injured, you should not put any unnecessary stress on yourself, Ato can take care of the bags." said Clara in a matter-of-factly voice.

"Eh? All the bags, dear?" Ato asked nervously.

"If you want any meat tonight, then yes."

"Why am I a slave in my own house?" lamented Ato.

As they all went upstairs, the warm holiday days began. This was one of the few memories that he would forever keep deep within his heart.

FIRE MOTH BASE - 2018 (Previous era) (Same time)

"So, do you guys have anything more to ask?" asked a man in his early twenties. He had brown hair, with a strand of white in the front. He was wearing glasses and looked like a famous scientist. His name was Joachim Nokianvirtanen or better known as Welt Yang, and he was the first case of the supposed apex of Honkai a 'Herrscher.'

"I guess we're finished, what you have said over the days matches what that boy had written in his report." Said a short-statured woman with red hair and twin tails. Her name was Samantha Nikola Tesla

"But I would never have guessed that you have turned into a Herrscher Professor Welt." Said another woman with neck-length blue hair. Her name was Lynthia Albert Einstein.

"What can I say? Fate works in strange ways." Welt said scratching his head.

"Fate huh?" mused Tesla.

"So, what will happen now?"

"Well, the interrogation is over; now we will submit our report to General Alexei and see what he decides." Said Einstein. She continued "However, don't worry, we will vouch for you Professor Welt, as we have noted no negative impact of your presence in this base."

"Right. So don't worry your pretty little head and rest for now." Added Tesla.

"You guys are way too relaxed in presence of a threat to humanity." commented Welt.

"That is why I have personally come to decide whether this threat is true or not." A new commanding voice boomed in the interrogation cell, the three looked at the door to see a man in his forties with silver hair, a French beard and a scar running along his left cheek from the jaw to the eyebrow. The man was well built indicating his military origins. Accompanying the man was a woman in her early twenties with flaming crimson hair that reached down to her waist. She had a body that most women would kill for as well as sharp and focused yellow eyes that threatened to bore into your soul.

"Apologies for the late introduction, my name is Alexei Romanov and I'm the leader of this organization. And this lady beside me is Lt. Himeko." General Alexei introduced himself.

"Ah, yes my name is-"

"-Joachim Nokianvirtanen AKA Welt Yang, Professor of Nuclear physics and Quantum mechanics at Berlin University, and a worldwide famous researcher of the same."

"…, I guess everybody knows me here then." Welt said sweat dropping.

"Of course, your reputation precedes you, Dr. Welt, your consecutive winning of the Nobel prize for six-year straight for your contribution to Quantum Physics has made you a worldwide icon in the world of scientists and intellectuals alike." said General Alexei.

"Well they are not that great, I mean anybody else could have discovered the phenomenon of string splicing given enough time." Welt said Bashing.

"Well, aside from your intellectual achievements, I have come here to discuss what you were implying earlier."

"…" at this Welt gave a serious expression.

"You realize that we are short-staffed in gifted individuals to further our Honkai research; because of this, our soldiers are the ones who have to bear the consequences. Some more than others."

"Some?" asked Welt curiously.

"You have met him, right? The boy who tries to carry the fate of humanity."

"Oh, I understand."

"Even though nobody here personally likes it here, I have to send the boy on to dangerous missions one after the other. Sometimes the odds are so stacked against him that even I am not sure that he will return. But defying all odds, he had succeeded where many have failed, but many of us fear that it may not be the case forever."

"Yeah, I know." Welt said knowingly, that he had seen Kevin fight first hand and he was sure that if the boy kept going the way he did, the only thing waiting for him would be a cold grave.

"That's why we need better researchers, so we can develop better measures against these so-called Herrschers and Honkai."

"But sir, why are you telling me all this? Welt was puzzled.

"I have decided to take a gamble Dr. Welt. I want to give you a chance."

"A chance?"

"Yes, a chance. I will give you the research department of the Fire Moths, you can recruit other intellectuals as your wish. What I expect is very simple: Cutting edge technology to fight against the Honkai."

"!" Welt was stunned beyond belief, this man here was offering the research department of one of the most advanced global organizations to him, a Herrscher of all things.

"I sense your unease. Is it because of what you are?" asked General Alexei.

"Frankly yes, didn't you hear what I said? I'm a threat to humanity. How can you trust someone like me?"

"Let's say it's my gut feeling. A genuine threat to humanity would have tried to kill me the moment I walked in the room." General Alexei said with full confidence.

At this Welt became silent. He fully expected to be killed and dissected upon coming here; but instead, he was told to lead the technological revolution against the Honkai. But he still had his reservations, so he decided to question them

"What if I turn on you later?"

"If you threaten any of the people here at some time in the future-" General Alexei looked at Welt with an expression that made him feel fear despite him being technically a superior being "- I will personally end you."

Welt was satisfied with this, he realized that the man before him was a man of his word, if he ever lost himself, he was sure that the man before him would put a stop to him. Thus, Welt decided to put his faith to reciprocate the trust that the man has put before him.

"When I became a Herrscher, I caused a Honkai surge killing or turning everyone around me into zombies or monsters. I had to put down people that I had known my entire life, people who were like my big brothers and sisters, people who gave me a place to belong, people whom I could come back to. That was when my hatred for Honkai became bigger than whatever hate I had for the people around me." said welt

"We all have our crosses to bear." General Alexei said knowingly.

Welt continued "What I mean is that when I came here, I was fully prepared to offer myself as a specimen so that you guys could study me and develop technology to fight against the Honkai. But you gave me a chance to make a change, you personally gave me your trust despite what I am, and I intend to return it in full."

"So that means-"

"Yes Mr. Alexei sign me in, I will develop weapons and whatever you want so we could fight and eradicate the Honkai."

"Even if you are a Herrscher?" Asked General Alexei.

"Even if I am a Herrscher." told Welt determined.

"Well then, Dr. Welt welcome to the Fire Moths, you are to lead the research division as their head and develop anti-Honkai technology. I expect great things from you."

"I will not disappoint you; how may I refer you officially sir?"

"Well, I'm a Commander General on paper."

"Well then, I will not disappoint you General". Said Welt and they Shaked hands sealing the deal.

"Do you have any problems working under him Dr. Tesla, Dr. Einstein?"

"If we can under one of the most renowned Scientists in the world, I see no problems here, what about you Samantha?"

"He better not waste my time." grumbled Tesla.

At this Welt could only scratch his head. Guess the road ahead was a rough one.

One and a half month later

His wounds were now completely healed and he had been given the go-ahead to join the active duty by Moth doctors upon his arrival to the base. He just returned to base today, as Clara and Griseo wanted for him to stay a little longer. Finally, he was able to say goodbyes to them the day before yesterday albeit with Griseo latching on his arm proclaiming that she wasn't going to let her 'Nii-Nii' go. It took some effort to get her off, even then she was crying the entire time not wanting to let him go to the base.

As Kevin made his way through the hallways, he saw quite a greater number of people in white lab coats running to-and-fro. Ato has returned from the base earlier and told Kevin to expect a surprise waiting for him when he came back. Whatever the surprise was, it was quite substantial as he didn't get any information other than to visit the research department first thing in the morning.

Once he reached the research wing of the base, he saw the two chiefs and went to greet them.

"Good morning, Dr. Tesla, Dr. Einstein."

"Oh Kevin, your wounds are completely healed?" asked Einstein as she noticed him.

"Yes, I have been cleared to join active duty starting today."

"Hmph, look who came back, the one who nearly destroyed my pistols despite my warning."

"I'm sorry for that Dr. Tesla but it was an emergency."

"Hmph, you and your excuses."

"…." Kevin remained silent.

At this Einstein decided to change the topic and speak about the main reason they called him

"The main reason we called you here is to greet the new Chief of R&D." Einstein said to which Kevin raised his brows lightly.

"I was under the impression that R&D was headed under you both."

"Yeah, the change in Chief happened when you were in that recuperation holiday."

"Then who is the new Chief?" asked Kevin.

"That would be me." Said a very familiar voice. Turning around Kevin saw a very familiar face, one that he met in the assignment in Germany to be exact.

"Welt-san."

"Sup, boy; how are you doing now?"

"I'm doing fine now." replied Kevin noticing him wearing a traditional lab coat, with the Moth insignia on the left breast pocket and an id card hanging off it.

"Then let me reintroduce myself. I'm Dr. Welt Yang the new Chief of the R&D division, let's work together to protect humanity." Welt said extending his hand for a handshake.

"Even though you are a Herrscher?" Kevin was skeptical.

"Kevin, you are not the only one who lost everything to the Honkai. But we can work together to make sure that nobody goes through what we went through."

At this Kevin could not refute as he had personally seen what the man caused involuntarily in Germany, furthermore his eyes held the same expression albeit far lessened as him. So, Kevin decided to give the man a chance and see whether his conviction was true or not.

Taking his hand Kevin said:

"Then I'm in your care, Dr. Welt."

"Same here Kevin."

Hello everyone, welcome back to 'A Warriors Destiny'.

This chapter was mainly focused on Kevin's interactions with the different other characters like Griseo for example. Also, you would have noticed, that her mother's name was Clara instead of Blanca as in-game, this will be explained in the next chapter. Also, this previous era is different from the cannon one, while basically remaining cold and Rational, Moths will be driven by a healthy mix of emotions as well, for now. Maybe, we will meet a certain snek lady next chapter, who knows.
