Second Eruption

FIRE MOTH BASE – 2019(Previous era) (one month later)

Sirens blared through the entire base. Footsteps could be heard going to-and-fro, with people hurrying through the hallways to their designated station. Commander General Alexei Romanov made his way through the base in his commander's uniform with a very serious expression on his face. The last time sirens blared, they were faced with a Honkai disaster that completely wiped out a part of Hawaii, the government had to close the resorts there for an indefinite period until they could rebuild those islands.

As he entered the command room, he noticed Welt Yang, the chief of R&D of the Moths present there with a grave expression on his face. Noticing him everyone present in the command centre saluted him

"General."

"At ease. What's the situation?"

"Sir we have detected Honkai surges from all around the world. We have a report of Honkai beasts appearing all over the major and minor cities. The UN has issued a formal request to us to deal with the disasters and help with the evacuations."

"I see. How many squads are ready to go now?"

"All of them are on standby."

"Deploy squad 1 to deal with the disasters in Central Asia, squad 2 will go deal with the middle east, squad 3 will deal with North America, squad 4 will…" General Alexei started to give his commands.

"Finally, squad 7 will deal with the happenings in Central and Northern Europe."

"Sir." Everyone acknowledged and scattered to communicate the squad assignments. After that General Alexei turned to Welt and asked:

"What do you make of this Dr. Welt?"

"It's hard to say. It could be a regular Honkai occurrence and we are witnessing just an increased frequency of them or in the worst-case scenario…" Welt trailed off.

"Herrscher." General Alexei said the word that summed up the entire worst-case scenario.

"Yes." Welt nodded in agreement "depending on the situation this could end very badly for all of us. If this indeed is the birth of a Herrscher, then we could see casualties in millions."

"Can't we reason with them how we did with you?"

"You don't understand general, I was able to prevent the persona rewrite, but the same is not the case with every one of them. I was able to do it because I govern the power over reason, and my hate was not enough to tip the balance. But if someone goes their persona rewritten with the Herrscher's, then there is no turning back for them."

"I understand. So, what do you propose we should do then Dr. Welt?"

"If the knowledge I inherited from the Honkai is correct, this Herrscher has the ability to control space-time."

"The powers are sounding like a fantasy movie, Dr. Welt."

"I already said to you, Herrschers are beings that go beyond human comprehension. That is why they are called Herrschers in the first place."

"I suppose so. So how we are going to deal with the awakening of a second one."

"I will go and prepare some countermeasures with whatever knowledge I have. But expect great casualties from the squad that will confront it, General."

"You underestimate us, doctor, we all are prepared to pay the ultimate price."

"I just hope it to be enough, General." said Welt in a serious tone as he excused himself and made his way to the lab.

"How is this going to turn into?" contemplated General Alexei as he focused on his command terminal displaying Honkai disasters on the world map.

Kevin was making his way to the command room after being informed that there was a quick briefing before their deployment. He was training as usual when he heard the sirens. Of all the years he spent here at the Moths, the sirens were only blared for extremely important situations; furthermore, a meeting of all the ranked officers did not bode well. Pushing these thoughts aside he made his way to the command room for the briefing.

He was met with the different ranked soldiers and people from the R&D as well as the First institute. He saw Welt holding some kind of clipboard in his hands; he saw Mobius as well discussing something with Klein and Clara. Giving them a greeting nod, he went and joined aniki and aneki as Welt decided to start the briefing with general Alexei's permission.

"Okay, so to all of you present here, let's cut down the pleasantries and get down to business. This morning at around 0430, our Honkai sensors noticed multiple Honkai surges all over the globe. The surges were soon led by several Honkai outbreaks and various Honkai beasts coming into existence and attacking the major cities all over the world."

There were murmurs all over the room. This scale of Honkai outbreaks was unheard of until now. There used to be two or a maximum of three per month, but to happen now all over the world, something was going on and it fuelled their anxiety.

"The UN has issued a formal request for the Moths to help the peacekeeping forces to fight the Honkai beasts and for civilian evacuation. I'm sure all of you have got the information about your deployment, you are to meet the commander of the peacekeeping forces in your deployed area and cooperate with them." General Alexei continued.

There were sounds of acknowledgement all over the room, some getting excited to have real action as they were saying after most of these outbreaks were handled by Kevin's squad. Kevin however saw the serious expressions on the faces of the general and Dr. Welt and knew that there was something else. True enough, Dr. Welt cleared his voice and continued:

"There is something else we wish to inform you about. It is likely that this is a Honkai eruption, and that means any one of you will face it." Welt said, his bangs covering his eyes.

"Face what?" an officer asked, clearly nervous with the expressions that the General and Dr. Welt were showing.

"Herrscher."

At this word, the entire room went silent. The room was so silent that the sound of the air-conditioned air flowing in the room could be heard. Everybody present there knew what it meant, a Herrscher: the apex of Honkai, godlike beings that commanded the laws of physics itself, able to bend them to their will. If the prowess of Dr. Welt using his powers was anything to go by, they were in deep trouble.

Kevin was shocked as well, a Herrscher so soon. It was not even been two years since Welt-san appeared. Has the Honkai deemed him unworthy, and sent another one in its place, this makes it seem like the Honkai had a consciousness of its own but how could that be possible? Wasn't Honkai a concept, a form of energy? Sure, it was not native to earth, but it was energy nonetheless. So many questions and they didn't have an answer to them. Kevin clenched his hands, those questions can be answered at a later date; now they had a situation on their hands, which if handled poorly could lead to the extinction of human civilization. This he will not allow to happen as long as he lives, it was his oath after all.

Welt continued "Keeping this in mind I have made some countermeasures, so listen up. The Herrscher I believe coming this time according to my knowledge is the 2nd Herrscher: Herrscher of the Void. As its names suggest, it will have the power over the ether that makes the fabric of space-time. It can control the nodes of the different points of this fabric which can potentially mean it has complete control over the flow of time in the area that its present. Furthermore, having powers over the ether means that it can create and trap others in dimensions that should not be ordinarily possible. As such I have created a remote device that can nullify these powers to some extent, but not for long."

Kevin listened on as Welt-san explained how the device worked. If he understood correctly, the device will interfere with the Honkai energy manipulation by the Herrscher around them for a finite time period, after which it will fail. So, if he encountered the Herrscher, he will have this time limit to defeat it before he gets scattered across space-time if what he heard was correct.

"Doctor, how much time will this gadget last?" one of the officers asked. Kevin himself was interested, according to the time limit he had to devise his plan if he encountered the Herrscher.

"Twenty minutes." Welt said without a moment of hesitation.

The room broke out in whispers again, twenty minutes was too less to do anything, they needed at least two hours to clear a mob of five Emperor-class beasts, and this was a Herrscher they were talking about.

'Twenty minutes only huh. Then I will have to go all out from the start' Kevin was already formulating a plan in case he confronted the supposed Herrscher.

"Silence." General Alexei commanded, and the entire room fell silent once again. He continued "We know that the time limit is short, but it is the best we can come up with our limited knowledge. This is the reason we have formulated a plan if we encounter the said Herrscher. First of all, if any one of your team encounters the Herrscher you are not to engage it. You will contact the HQ and will only engage it when all the Moth forces are in position. And as for the plan, we are going to go over it now so listen well and commit it to your memory. Dr. Welt if you will please."

At this Welt once again started to speak the plan they have devised. What they did not know however that it was going to go to the trash once they met the actual Herrscher and at that time the fate of the world will be in the hands of a young warrior.

Kevin finished preparing up as the time for deployment neared. His remaining squad had been assigned to Western Europe; more specifically the countries of Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands. He was to meet with the UN peacekeeping force in Brussels and head on from there out. He was preparing himself mentally for his confrontation with the second Herrscher, if it came to it, he will fight it alone and this time he is not going to listen to anyone. He had lost enough to Honkai, now it was time to pay back the favour.

Thinking these thoughts, he did not notice a soldier calling out to him

"….gt. …rgent. Sergeant. SERGEANT."

He was quickly brought out of his inner thoughts; he was on his guard but relaxed when he saw who the other party was.

"You are private Emile, correct?"

"I'm honoured you remember me sir." the orange blond-haired said scratching the back of his head.

"Do you need something from me?"

"Oh, yes." the man said composing himself "Dr. Mobius has requested you to swing by her lab before you depart."

"Dr. Mobius, but why?"

"I'm not sure myself sir, her personal assistant said to pass this message to you saying that the doctor wanted to talk about something important."

"Something important? I understand, you may return to your post soldier."

"Sir." he saluted before saying "Sir one more thing."

"What is it?"

"That's umm… the thing is….." the private was nervous.

"I don't have much time."

"Yes. Umm..so… Best of luck to you for the mission Sergeant."

At this, Kevin replied "Best of luck to you too soldier. Don't die out there."

"SIR!" the private saluted him with enthusiasm.

"If that's all you had to say, you can return now."

"Yes sir." the private saluted for one last time before he went to his station in the 3rd squad. Kevin made his way to the lab after seeing him disappear around one of the corners.

The lab was filled with people running here and there. He scanned the lab for Mobius, quickly finding her behind one of the desks ordering a junior researcher. He went over to her and spoke:

"You called for me doctor?"

Mobius snapped her head over to him so fast that he wondered if her neck was okay.

"Oh Kevin, you came." said Mobius.

"Yes, you said you had something important to discuss with me."

"Right." she then said to her assistant "Fuxi, you can handle the rest, right?"

"Yes, doctor." the assistant said bowing her head and leaving them.

"Come with me, Kevin." Mobius said before holding his hand and dragging him to the back of the lab. Once they were secluded enough Kevin spoke:

"What did you want to talk about?"

"Here take this." Mobius thrust something into his hands. It was a pendant of some sort, from the looks it was made of silver.

"What is this?"

"It's a charm from my hometown. The spirits that this charm calls will protect its wearer."

"Why are you giving me this?" Kevin asked confused.

"Sigh… Kevin, I know what you are thinking. You are thinking to fight the Herrscher alone if you happen to run into it. Am I correct?"

"…"

"And I know the look into your eyes. You are not going to listen to any of us to do otherwise."

"…"

At his silence, Mobius' shoulders started trembling

"I know it's selfish but-" saying this she hugged him. Kevin heard her breath hitch and felt her body tremble.

"-please do not fight it alone, run away. It is not cowardly to run away from something out of your capabilities."

At this Kevin spoke:

"You know I cannot do that. If I leave it alone and run away, it will destroy the whole of humanity. This my duty won't allow."

"Why? Why?" she banged her fist on his chest as her voice trembled "why don't you understand? You are the only one of you in this world. There is no one that can replace you in this world."

At this Kevin said in a steady voice that carried determination and resolve:

"Yes, I'm the only one of me, but I'm also one of the soldiers. My duty comes before everything else. Furthermore, if my life ensures that others are safe, then it is worth it."

Kevin then separated himself from her forcefully and walked away from the lab before could try to stop him. Mobius could only watch helplessly as the man she grew fond of walked to an extremely dangerous battlefield and perhaps to a grim fate.

Mobius clasped her hands on her chest, squeezing it and hoping that he would be safe. As she watched his back vanish through the door of the labs, she could only pray:

'Please come back to me safe and sound Kevin.'

OUTSKIRTS OF BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) – 2019(Previous era) (a few hours later)

The transport craft landed on the outskirts of the Belgian capital. Kevin looked around trying to find the leader of the UN peacekeeping forces in this area. He found them quickly enough on the main freeway leading into the city. They looked like a typical army, with tanks, armoured vehicles, etc. But Kevin knew, that in front of the Honkai beasts they were useless. Nonetheless, they needed their help to fight the beasts and to help with the civilian evacuation. The commander noticed him coming over and spoke:

"Oi, what is a brat doing here? Go home to your parents." the other soldiers laughed at his comment. Kevin ignored the commander's comment and introduced himself:

"I'm Sergeant Kevin of Squad 7 of the Fire Moths. I'm here with my squad members to aid you guys in fighting the beasts and civilian evacuation within the city."

"Huh, you talking serious brat?" the man asked incredulously. To this, Kevin showed his badge with the insignia of the Moths on it.

"Sir, the insignia is genuine and the description of the people matches with our info." one of the subordinates of the UN forces commander whispered to him.

"Since when did they allow brats into their ranks? Are they just wasting our resources now?" the man asked.

"Sir, I advise you don't antagonize them, or otherwise you will get scolded again by the higher-ups."

"Fine." The man faced Kevin and introduced himself "I'm the commander of the 418th company of the 3rd army of the UN peacekeeping forces, Major Michael Stroffman. I'm sure you know the plan."

"I'm afraid not, I was ordered to report my squad to you and from then onwards to follow your orders regarding the fight and civilian evacuation."

"Fine then, so here's the plan. The tanks will be our vanguard, followed by your squad as you guys have the most experience in fighting whatever those are. You will be provided backup by a unit of 100 infantry and armoured vehicles. The rest of us will focus on civilians' evacuations. Any questions?"

"None sir."

"Good then. All right men move out, we will move from west to east, block by block to kill those creatures and to look for survivors." Major Michael commanded.

"Sir." the UN forces soldiers acknowledged.

"You heard the Major, squad 7 we will be the vanguard, form five-man units and place yourselves in between ranks of the infantry in the vanguard. Prioritize killing the Honkai beasts as the search and rescue can be done by the UN forces."

"Sir." all the squad members acknowledged his orders. Kevin took a look at his unit. Out of the 100 men, only 25 survived the mission in the Andes and nobody knew how many they were going to lose today, but he will make sure that their deaths would not be in vain. He will carry all his fallen comrades to his final resting place, which is one of the promises he made to himself long ago.

"Advance." the UN force commander commanded and the army with squad 7 moved into the Belgian capital to begin their mission without knowing that this is going to be their grave except for Kevin.

The mission had been going smoothly so far. They have killed dozens of Honkai beasts ranging from seraph-class to Emperor-class. The initial contempt that the UN forces had turned into awe as they saw the Moth soldiers in action, but none other received more attention than Kevin Himself. His use of BABEL along with SOLFLAME astonished everyone. To use a sword in modern times was unheard of, but he was using it; moreover, the sword was spewing flames like in mythical stories.

"Wow, what is the weapon is he using? it looks so cool." one of the UN force members asked a moth soldier.

"Impressed right? That blade is called SOLFLAME, it uses concentrated Honkai energy to create a never-ending flame which can burn almost everything Honkai beasts included." the Moth soldier proudly said.

"And what about those pistols, are they shooting flaming bullets?"

"You are correct. Those pistols can shoot flaming bullets. And know what, in Burst mode, the power output is equal to an artillery gun."

"Wha-" the UN force soldier was shocked.

Meanwhile, Kevin has just killed his twelfth Emperor-class. While he and his men killed most of the beasts, the UN force members did not slouch either. They were able to handle chariots with their tactics of using tanks and infantry soldiers. Meanwhile, the other half of the UN soldiers were performing the search and rescue of the stranded civilians at a good pace. Kevin went to report the complement of monster eradication of yet another block of the city.

"Major Michael, we have finished the extermination of monsters in the fifteenth ward; you guys can go ahead with the evacuation of the civilians."

"Hmm acknowledged. But you guys sure work fast, you all know how to deal with those monsters quickly and efficiently."

"It's our job sir. And this would not have been possible without your help."

"Haha, you flatter us. Anyway, by looking at the progress, we might be done in another hour. Then we will move to the next city."

"Sir." Kevin saluted acknowledging Major's orders.

"No need to be so stiff with me, I'm not your boss."

"But you are the commanding officer now."

"Fine, fine. So uptight. Continue the good work, Sergeant. Dismissed."

Kevin gave one more salute to the man before going back to his position in the vanguard. Michael saw him leaving and wondered what a child like him was doing in this place, but it was not his place to ask. The boy's eyes told of the cross he bore, and he understood the sentiment as he bore his share of them as well.

Kevin returned to his squad and relayed the information. The soldiers were content that their work was getting rewarded with a high number of evacuees. They just had to remain strong and let the guys in the back do their job.

"Okay people, double-time. We can't let sergeant get all the glory." a soldier said

"Huh, speak for yourself. You have the least number of kills today." another one replied

"Guy's about to get the special training session, so he is extra motivated to save his ass." a third one added.

"Shut up." the first one retorted.

There were small talks like this going around the battlefield. Kevin wanted them to be more serious but decided that this much is fine considering the pace of clearing the monsters. He shook his head and went ahead, his sword claiming another two Templars and his pistols claiming a chariot.

"Sergeant's on a roll today." one of them commented.

"Well, he IS our leader."

Everything was going smoothly when it happened. One moment they were all fighting the Honkai beasts together. The next moment there was a huge pillar of light coming from the top of one of the buildings. The air suddenly felt extremely suffocating, and he felt the rise in Honkai energy.

"Everybody watch-" he tried to warn everybody but it was too late.

As his consciousness got cut, he saw a purplish wave of something blast out from the building and he felt extremely hot and then nothing at all. His vision blacked out.

He woke up with a start, feeling disoriented. He saw around but found nobody. He stood up groggily and took a good look around, at the place where his squad mates and the UN forces were present there was nothing except piles of some kind of dust. He made his way to one of the piles and took a good look, that was when his eyes widened. There was a mark on the ground in the shape of a human, and the clothes were on the ground on the top of that pile. He picked up the clothes and what he saw would be burned into his memory forever.

There was dust falling from the clothes, and along with the dust fell a dog tag. He picked it up and read the name on it. 'Stan.' it read; Kevin's eyes widened; Stan was one of the members of his squad. That's when he realized that there were multiple piles of dust scattered across the place and that was when the realization sunk in. It was not dust-

It was ashes, human ashes, his comrades and the others who were present here: their ashes.

Kevin took a step back. All the people here except him were turned into ashes, they were gone just like that, and nothing of them remained. No bodies, no mementoes, no memory. They were gone forever and he couldn't even bury them. As he thought, he felt the despair wash over him; he failed them again, they are forever gone now and it was all his fault. He was alone… again.

That was when he heard some footsteps, he turned his head to the source of the sound hoping to find someone, anyone. But all he found were more beasts and zombies. So, the ones who were not turned to ashes had this fate; it was no different than dying. It was his duty to put them to rest and he would do so. He picked up his sword and charged into them rage coursing through his body. Whatever did this, he will purge it from this world, he promised to himself as he stabbed through a Templar.

Kevin made his way through the now doubly-infested city, killing anything in his way. He knew that whatever killed everyone in the city was on the top of the building where he saw the light pillar. One thing he noticed in his body, is that he could not feel anything now, not the roaring flames engulfing the destroyed buildings or the chilly winds that flew through the empty streets. This was currently on the bottom of the list of his concerns now. When he reached the building, he heard a voice that was so inhuman that it couldn't belong to a person:

"Yes, bow down to your queen, for I am the Honkai itself."

And at that moment he knew what was waiting for him at the top of the building:

THE HERRSCHER OF THE VOID.

Kevin knew this was it, this was the battle to avenge his fallen comrades and to protect humankind. He had to win even if he himself turns to ashes in the end. Thus resolving himself, he stepped forward, entering the building. The mortal stepped into the domain of a god to ensure the tomorrow of his brethren. As he made his way up the stairs, Kevin finally completed and perfected his unfinished oath:

As a warrior bold, I will live by the oath I swore.

Purge the vile Honkai, and burn down the false gods.

My brothers lay in the fields, as humanity's brave shields.

For the light that we all sought, even if I die, I will never yield.

These four lines will become the base that will define who he is for millennials to come, the oath that will be followed by his descendants even into the next era. The promise to protect the weak and innocent: The Kaslana Oath.

Mobius was extremely anxious, that idiot had refused her pleas and gone ahead on the dangerous mission. Knowing him he will never back down even if he is extremely hurt. If something happens to him then she... Thinking such things, she didn't even notice when she started chewing on her nails. It was a habit of the olden days that she reverted to only when she was extremely stressed. As she continued to chew on her nails anxiously, she didn't even notice that she had started to chew on her skin tearing it.

"Doctor!" exclaimed an alarmed voice snatching away her hand. She saw Klein holding her hand with an anxious expression, and that was when she noticed that her fingers were bleeding.

"Bring the first aid kit Nuwa." Klein said to one of the junior researchers to which she went to bring the said item. When the first aid kit arrived Klein gently cleaned her hand and wrapped it around the medicinal gauze around it.

"Doctor, what are you so worried about?"

"It's nothing Klein."

"You are lying doctor, you were chewing your nails badly. I have not seen you do that for a long time now. You are extremely stressed."

"Klein. Stop it." Mobius said in a very low voice. Afraid of her voice Klein dropped the topic.

Mobius on the other hand wanted to vent to her so badly. She wanted to tell her how much she was worried about something happening to Kevin. He always, always took care of others without spending a glance at himself. He was the kind of guy to get hurt in place of others due to their own stupidity. Even if he didn't express it outwards, he was extremely kind to others; he gave someone like her a second chance. She was sure that if he got the chance to save others while sacrificing himself, he will take it without a second thought. This scared her to no end, she didn't want to lose him like her father. If she loses him as well, she would never be able to recover from it. He became such an integral part of her life by just being a sincerely kind guy.

Deciding that sitting in this lab was not going to do her anxiety any good, she decided to take a walk outside.

"Klein, I will be stepping out for a while. Keep the documents that need my attention on my desk and I will look at them afterwards."

"Yes, doctor."

Thus she left her lab at the First institute to take a walk and hopefully calm herself. After she left, the assistants began to talk among themselves.

"Did you see what Dr. Mobius was doing?" Junior researcher Nuwa asked in disbelief. She had never seen Dr. Mobius in such a mood from the moment she joined here at the First Institute under her.

"Yes. She chewed her nails so much that she chewed through her skin." Her sister junior researcher Fuxi replied, equally puzzled at their head's actions.

"Hey Klein, do you know anything about this?" Nuwa asked.

Klein listening to her question sighed and replied:

"She only does this when she is extremely stressed. To get rid of this habit she started popping bubble wraps long ago. For her to revert back like this, whatever is on her mind it's making her extremely nervous."

"Nervous? Dr. Mobius?" Nuwa was in disbelief, she had always seen the doctor with a predatory smile and sharp eyes that indicated that she knew everything and was in complete control. And that was true officially as well, Dr. Mobius had the highest authority currently in the Moths behind only general Alexei and Chief of R&D Dr. Welt. To make someone like her so unsure of herself, whatever was on her mind was a very serious matter indeed.

"If that is the case, then we should help her. We are her assistants after all." Nuwa said

"I don't think we can help her in this case." Klein said.

"But why?" Fuxi asked curiously.

"Well… how to put it, it is something that she has to face on her own."

"?" both the sisters were confused.

Mobius was able to calm herself down somewhat but the worry still lingered in her mind. She looked up and saw herself standing in front of the command room. Odd, she didn't even notice when she came here. Thinking that she would not be able to work anyways, she opened the door and went inside. She knew that at least here she will find some news on him.

When she entered the room, she was shocked, however. People were running to-and-fro. The entire room was in some kind of frenzy:

"Try the backup channel."

"It's not working."

"What about the universal channel."

"It's also not working. There is a total blackout, according to our satellites no EM wave is able to penetrate there."

"Goddamit."

She saw general Alexei and Welt in some kind of heated discussion

"To think it would happen there."

"What do you propose we do then doctor?"

"Frankly I don't know sir; we can't make head or tails of the situation without any communication. To think it would happen where he was sent. Do you think he will try to fight it alone?"

"Most likely. He is the kind of boy who will try to shoulder everything on his own. That's why we need to establish communications fast doctor."

"Fuck!" Welt said agitatedly banging his hand on the table.

Mobius approached them and using the same tone she usually used to mask her nervousness spoke:

"Oh my, why are you beating the poor table for?"

Welt noticed her and with a snarl on his face said "Not now Mobius, we have a situation on our hands."

"Situation?" Mobius asked in her playful tone.

"Look, I don't have time to deal with your crap now. So go and bother someone else." Welt said leaving her and going to a group in front of computer screens and discussing with them about something heatedly.

"So cold." Mobius mocked him and went to speak with the general instead.

"What happened, general?"

"Oh, Dr. Mobius, we lost contact with the soldiers deployed in Brussels." General Alexei said while running a hand down his face. Seeing his expression made Mobius very uncomfortable, she felt something was wrong very wrong.

"Who all were deployed there?" Mobius asked praying that it was not who she thought it was. But life had never been kind to her since childhood.

"The 7th squad led by sergeant Kevin."

'No.'

Mobius felt her legs buckle and her breath constricted. Her head was spinning and she felt like she was dreaming. But of course, it wasn't one; it was reality, hard, cold reality.

"What happened?" she could only whisper out.

"The operation was going smoothly. The UN forces along with Sgt. Kevin's squad were taking care of the beasts quickly and the evacuation was also proceeding smoothly. But suddenly there was a Honkai surge of extremely high magnitude. All the communications and visuals were cut off immediately during the surge, and we haven't been able to bring it back online."

Mobius couldn't believe her ears. They lost communications with Kevin's squad after the surge? How long had it been? How did the surge happen? She was having all these questions, but no answers. Her chest started to hurt and she felt something prickling in the corner of her eyes. But she didn't care, she could only think one thing:

'Why?'

Why was this happening again? Why did she lose the things she held close to her heart like this? Why did the world hate her so much? What did she do wrong?

She was thinking things like this when someone from one of the posts shouted.

"Sir, I'm getting a signal from Sgt. Kevin's squad."

"What? Are you sure?" Welt asked very loudly.

"Yes sir. I'm 100% positive. I will put it on the main speaker."

The technician said as he forwarded the incoming radio to the main speakers:

"bzzt… bzzt…This is bzzt… Kevin of bzzt… can you read me HQ?" Kevin's voice rang through the speakers.

"Yes, we can hear you Kevin. What is the situation there?"

"Everybody is dead bzzt… into ashes bzzt… no survivors except me." Kevin replied.

"Roger, wait for reinforcements. They should be there within thirty minutes." General Alexei said.

"I'm sorry sir bzzt… found it. I repeat bzzt… found the Her bzzt…" the voice was full of static.

"Kevin, we cannot hear you properly, repeat what you found." Welt said joining the conversation. Mobius felt something was very very wrong there in Brussels. How could so many people have died instantly?

The next sentence uttered by Kevin however answered all her questions. This was the only sentence said by him that miraculously went across perfectly. Kevin in a chilling voice full of resolve said:

"Now beginning the confrontation and subjugation of the HERRSCHER OF THE VOID."

Mobius' heart stopped.

To be continued….
