Trouble At Home- Part 1
Overwatch dropship- Thirty minutes away from Gibraltar
"Watchpoint Gibraltar, this is Strike One, come in please."
The Orca transporting the team from Australia was getting closer to the watchpoint and the pilot was following normal protocol, contacting the base and letting them know they'd be arriving soon. It was a precautionary measure, to make sure no arriving dropships were actually hijacked.
So when no reply came, the pilot went from calm to worried in an instant.
"Strike One to Gibraltar, please respond."
Nothing.
"Gibraltar, come in."
Still nothing. The pilot activated the dropships speakers.
"Commander, can I speak to you for a moment."
Footsteps could soon be heard, as Morrison walked to the cockpit and leaned against the pilots chair
"What's wrong?" Morrison asked, seeing the pilot switch on the autopilot and then turn to face him.
"I can't raise the Watchpoint sir. I've tried multiple times but no one's answering."
Morrison motioned for the pilots headset, placing the one headphone and the microphone against his face and changing the frequency.
"Ana, this is Morrison. Respond."
Morrison had no better luck, giving the pilot his headset back after only hearing static. Since this was Ana's personal frequency, he knew something was wrong.
"Stay on course for Gibraltar and tell me when we're less than ten minutes out. Until then, keep trying to raise someone."
"Yes sir."
The Strike Commander turned and headed to the rest of the squad.
"Alright, listen up. We've lost contact with Gibraltar and from what our intel said, it's possible that the base is under attack."
The occupants of the dropship all tensed up, any previous conversations now long forgotten. Widow tightened her grip on her weapon, which she'd been cleaning beforehand, while Wrecking Ball simply remained still, as he'd done so for most of the journey.
"What's our plan of action?" Sojourn asked.
"We'll land a short distance away and make our way to the base. If there is an attack, we'll link up with the defending forces and help hold them off."
The troops all silently nodded, before Morrison turned to Widow.
"While we do that, Widow, get yourself onto the rooftops. If there's anyone up there that shouldn't be, take them out and then provide cover fire for whoever needs it."
"Understood."
Morrison headed back to the cockpit, intending to try Ana's frequency again, while everyone else began preparing their equipment. Even Wrecking Ball started checking over his systems, making sure each one was working correctly.
Widow didn't have much to check over, since she'd already checked her rifle beforehand and knew it was functioning normally. So, she made sure both her thermal goggles and grappling hook were working and then sat back in her seat, keeping her worries to herself.
Watchpoint Gibraltar- Lower levels
"FALL BACK! FALL BACK!"
Sombra blocked out the panicked shouting from one of the two soldiers still on their feet. They were firing at the Bastion, hoping they'd do some damage to it while trying to move towards the door, a task which was more or less impossible while the Omnic was still active.
During the chaos, Sombra had barely managed to avoid being hit, having to drop to the ground to avoid being shot by the Bastion. She had to watch as it gun down the soldiers, then turn its weapon on Brigitte. Her barrier had taken the full force of the impact, yet it still knocked her down to the ground.
Brig blinked a few times, trying her best to stand up yet failing to do so. The best she could do was lean onto her side, her eyes focusing on the Bastion in front of her.
It's tank cannon was still aimed at her, yet it didn't fire. She didn't know what it was doing, yet she just assumed it was toying with her, wanting her as scared as possible before it killed her.
This turned out to be far from the case. In a matter of seconds, Sombra appeared from thin air, jumping on top of the miniature tank and firing her SMG, unleashing an entire magazine in the target below her. Brig had managed to give her the chance to sneak behind it and she was not going to waste it.
She'd quickly hacked the Bastion, holding the Omnic in place and more importantly leaving it defenceless. The two soldiers realised what Sombra had done and rushed forward, the one finding a grenade and throwing it to her.
The hacker didn't even have to think, pulling the pin and jumping off the Bastion, dropping the grenade right on top of it. Despite this, the explosion still didn't destroy it. However, what it had done was severely damage it. Sombra hacked the Omnic once more, making sure it couldn't repair itself, before she and the two troopers fired. The Bastion could only take so much and their combined fire finally destroyed it, the Omnic shutting down after being filled with bullets.
With the threat finally neutralised, everyone took a deep breath. Sombra walked over to Brig, kneeling down next to her while the other two soldiers began checking over the rest of the squad, needing to know who was still alive.
"How are you?" Sombra asked, helping Brig sit herself up.
"I'm alright..." She answered, the aftermath of the fight hitting her. She gently rubbed the back of her head and then looked at her shield, her hand shaking as she did so. "I... I've heard the stories but I've never actually fought a Bastion before... If you hadn't..."
Sombra could tell that the encounter had shaken Brig up. She gently placed her hands over Brig's and softly spoke to her.
"Hey, don't think about that. It's dead and you're not. You did okay."
Brig let out a deep breath, looking over to the destroyed Bastion before cautiously nodding her head.
"Yeah..." Brig's voice was shaky, though she was managing to calm herself down. "Thanks Sombra... for saving my life..."
"Don't mention it."
Brig managed to crack a smile, before she noticed one of the troopers kneeling next to Torbjorn.
"How is he..? Is he..? She could barely get the question out. The thought that her father had just been killed in front of her made Brig shudder.
"He's alive." The trooper answered, much to the relief of Brig. "He's unconscious but he has some serious injuries. He needs to be taken to the medical bay ASAP."
Brig nodded, worry beginning to fill her again as she slowly stood herself up. Just as she was about to speak though, a single Omnic ran around the corner, painted in Null Sector colours.
The Omnic raised its weapon and Brig didn't waste any time, pulling Sombra behind her and raising her barrier. However, the device didn't activate correctly, malfunctioning after the direct hit from the Bastion cannon.
Thankfully, the Omnic was never able to benefit from the malfunctioning barrier. Before it could fire at either of the agents, three pistol rounds hit directly in its head. The Omnic stood for a moment longer, before falling onto its knees and then fully over as it powered down.
The two agents spun around, seeing the squad leader aiming at the door. He was still on the floor, not able to stand up before he had to fight again. One of the soldiers moved to the doorway, keeping their rifle raised so everyone could move without the risk of another surprise attack.
"Nice shot." Sombra said to the squad leader, while Brig moved to the toolkit, finding a screwdriver and working on her shield, a task which fortunately didn't take too long.
"Thanks." The squad leader turned to the two troopers. "What's our status?"
"We're in a bit of a mess down here sir." The one trooper began. "The squads been cut to pieces. We have two men incapacitated and in need of medical attention, including Torbjorn. Everyone else who isn't standing is KIA."
The squad leader sighed, looking over his rifle before deciding to drop it, instead pulling a second pistol out from its holster. "Understood. Vasquez, get the injured ready to move. Dunn, keep that door covered. If you see anything, open fire."
With the two soldiers acknowledgment, the squad leader stepped over to the generator, where Sombra and Brig were talking.
"So I'm no expert but I'm guessing you can't fix this generator?" Sombra said, seeing how bad the damage now was.
"Not alone, no." Brig replied, doing a test of her shield to make sure it was working. "If the Bastion hadn't shot it I probably could have... but now the entire thing just needs ripping out and replacing."
"What about the backup one?"
"Depends on the damage. Assuming it's in better condition, then I probably could. However, we'd have to actually get there first, which means..."
"We'd have to risk walking straight into another ambush." Sombra said, finishing Brig's sentence. She considered their options for a few moments before looking over to the squad leader.
"Can you raise anyone on the comms..?"
"No ma'am."
"That means whatever's blocking the signal is still down here..."
"What's our next move then?"
Brig's question forced Sombra to stop and think once again. Theoretically, with Torb currently down, Brig was the person in charge, yet she was still a bit shaken up and definitely not in a position to be making any decisions.
"We need to get the power back up but we also need to warn everyone that Null Sector is down here. So, I think the best idea would be for us to split up. Brig and I stay down here, while the rest of the troopers head back up top with the wounded and get some backup down here."
"With all due respect ma'am, that's incredibly risky." The squad leader said. "The two of you couldn't possibly take Null Sector head on."
"We won't. I'll stay cloaked and scout ahead, then Brig can move up when it's clear."
The trooper sighed, clearly not happy. He was about to object but was stopped by Brig, who placed a hand on his shoulder.
"What's your name?"
"Woods ma'am."
"Woods, I need someone to make sure papa reaches safety. Those two troopers won't be able to defend themselves if they're attacked on the way back."
Woods sighed again. "Permission to speak freely ma'am?"
"Sure."
"Your father wouldn't be happy that you two were left down here with no support."
"I appreciate your concern Woods but Sombra's right. We need to get that generator back online and warn the rest of the base that Null Sector are down here. While I don't doubt your troops abilities, they can't defend themselves properly while they're both carrying an unconscious person."
Woods turned to the other two troopers, who by now had both Torb and the other wounded soldier ready to move.
"I'm getting an earful from him after this." Woods lightheartedly said, knowing he wouldn't convince Brig otherwise.
The engineer couldn't help but chuckle, her nerves from the earlier Bastion encounter now easing. "I'll make sure to keep him off your back."
Woods saluted the two agents, turning back to the other two soldiers and telling them the plan. They picked up Torb and the other wounded soldier and headed out, leaving Brig and Sombra alone.
"Are you sure we can make it?" Brig asked quietly, making sure to keep her voice down.
"As long as we move quickly and quietly, I think so." Sombra replied, equally as quiet. "They won't be expecting the two of us to still be down here. That's our advantage."
Brig nodded, her nerves creeping up again. She managed to keep herself calm, placing her mace in the tool chest and gently picking it up.
"Okay, let's do this."
"I'll scout out ahead, make sure it's clear for you. Which way to the generator?"
"That way." Brig answered, pointing at the doorway leading deeper into the lower levels. "First left."
Sombra nodded, before reaching into her jacket and pulling out a translocator.
"If anything finds you while I'm away, drop this on the floor and I'll be right back."
"Got it."
Watchpoint Gibraltar- Ground level
Tracer was currently standing near the main entrance to the base, her pulse pistols in hand as she watched the area. The sun had practically set now, making the task of watching for any potential threats more difficult.
Numerous soldiers were moving around her, all taking orders from Reinhardt and another soldier, who Lena overheard being referred to as Fox. Whether this was his real name or a code name she didn't know. All she'd managed to find out was that he was an Overwatch veteran from back in the day.
Along with the soldiers, Genji, Hanzo and DVa were standing nearby, DVa communicating with the other Meka pilots, while the two brothers were talking to themselves. Two crusaders stood next to Reinhardt, one watching the outside world while the other listened in on the conversation between Reinhardt and Fox.
As the soldiers continued setting up defensive positions and more arrived in the area, Lena noticed McCree arrive, along with another woman she didn't immediately recognise. Considering what she'd heard around the base lately, along with how she was dressed, Lena guessed this was Ashe.
While the two new arrivals walked over to the other agents, Lena's mind began to wander to Emily. Lena had been reluctant to leave, only going after they'd both promised the other that they'd be careful. The Watchpoint had numerous safe rooms, one of which was situated directly under Winston's lab. Even though Emily was currently inside that very room, Lena couldn't help but worry.
Thankfully, her mind was eased slightly by the fact Zenyatta was with her, who'd volunteered to protect her if there was indeed an attack. Zen wasn't the only Omnic who'd joined Overwatch, with a small number of the bases personnel being made up of Omnics. Due to the Null Sector threat, they'd either moved into one of the safe rooms, or had been assigned a role away from the front lines, to avoid any friendly fire situations.
"Hey Lena, you in there?"
Lena was snapped out of her trance by McCree, who'd managed to walk straight up to her without her even noticing.
"Huh..? Oh sorry McCree. I was in a world of my own."
"Thinkin about Emily by any chance?"
"Yeah." Lena admitted, watching as McCree lit up a cigar. "I know she's safe. She's probably in one of the safest places in the base actually and Zen's with her, so I know he'll look after her... but I still worry about her."
"Nothin wrong with that. Just as long as it doesn't distract you."
"It won't, don't worry. You know me McCree, once I'm on a mission, I focus on it..." The Brit paused, before continuing. "It's not just Em though. This might be the first time we've been attacked since the recall... It means our enemies are getting more confident."
At this point, Genji had walked over, overhearing part of the conversation.
"As my master wisely said. Overconfidence is a flimsy shield."
"Genji's right. Either that, or they're scared of us because we've become a lot stronger recently."
Lena chuckled. "Yeah, maybe they are. Either way, I hope you two are right. Last thing we need is Talon or Null Sector getting too confident."
Before their conversation could continue, the agents attention was drawn back to the matter at hand, as the crusaders ran in front of the line of soldiers. The three ran to the defensive line and readied their weapons, as the radio was flooded with chatter.
"I've got eyes on Omnics outside the base perimeter."
"How many?"
"Unknown, they're using the environment to hide their numbers but they're armed."
"Copy. Move to defensive positions and prepare for an attack."
The crusaders raised their barriers, the soldiers and agents behind moving to get a clear view of the area in front. Mere moments later, Null Sector attacked. Numerous Omnics revealed themselves, firing at the crusaders barriers. The Overwatch forces wasted no time, returning fire and taking down a number of foot soldiers.
"Captain Amari, we're under attack at the main entrance." Reinhardt reported, motioning for the other two crusaders to move backwards.
"Do you need reinforcements?"
"We're holding for now but backup would be appreciated."
By now, two more Meka pilots, DMon and King, had arrived and along with DVa, began hit and run attacks on the incoming enemies. Their attacks managed to draw the Omnics fire away from the crusaders barriers, allowing them to take turns recharging them. While the Meka pilots engaged the enemy, Tracer and Genji held back for now, waiting for the right moment to move forward and attack. While they waited to strike, McCree, Ashe and Hanzo were firing alongside the soldiers, their accuracy proving to be a valuable asset.
More agents also arrived to reinforce the position, Baptiste and Zarya being the first to arrive. Baptiste joined the defensive line, shooting at the incoming enemies, while Zarya used her protective barrier on the three crusaders, giving each of them the chance to lower their shields and recharge them.
Echo was the next agent to appear, swooping down from above and firing a number of sticky grenades at the enemy Omnics. It was now that Tracer and Genji pushes forward, both silently nodding at one another before splitting up.
Genji jumped over the defensive line, unsheathing his Dragonblade and deflecting some of the incoming fire, before slicing the nearest Null Sector Omnic in half. Tracer meanwhile used her mobility to her advantage, blinking every few seconds while firing at any targets she saw. The enemy Omnics simply couldn't keep up with her, unable to predict her next movements with any sort of accuracy.
As the fight continued, both Pharah and Mercy joined the battle. Mercy focused her healing beam on the crusaders, healing up the few hits they'd inevitably taken, before flying up to Pharah, using her staff to damage boost her rockets.
By now, the Null Sector forces were taking far too heavy loses to sustain the attack, the last few Omnics trickling in before they simply stopped. Anyone in front of the crusaders moved back behind their barriers, as the sounds of battle disappeared. With the sun now long gone, everyone uneasily waited, until one of the lookouts spoke up on the comms.
"Heads up, Null Sector's changing strategies. Most of their forces are heading towards Winston's position now."
"Copy that." Ana replied. "I'm heading towards that position now. Pharah, Mercy, move to reinforce the agents over there."
The two agents in question acknowledged the order, before flying off towards Winston's position. It wasn't long before fighting could be heard, yet the team couldn't listen for long. While Winston's team was being engaged, another smaller wave of Omnic's began another attack on the main entrance. Unlike before though, this wave included a Bastion and two OR-14's
The one OR-14 placed down a barrier, the Bastion transforming into its turret form and sitting behind it. The other fired its barrier towards Reinhardt, using the deplorable cover to move forward while shooting at its target. The other two crusaders were too busy defending against the Bastion to help and once the OR-14 was close enough, Reinhardt had no choice but to lower his shield and attack.
He struck the side of the Omnic with his hammer, causing it to stagger before it regained its footing. This in no way deterred the Omnic though, if anything, it simply angered it. A large blade appeared on its one arm and the Omnic swung towards Reinhardt.
The crusader however was ready for such a move, managing to move back enough so that the blade simply scratched the chest plate of his armour. Before the Omnic could swing again, Reinhardt grabbed its arm, forcing it up into the air for a few seconds. This was all the time Genji needed to jump up and slice off the weapon with his Dragonblade.
With its blade now gone, Reinhardt let go of the Omnics arm, forcefully hitting it with his hammer again. This time, the OR-14 fell to the floor and it wasn't able to stand back up before Genji attacked again. With one quick strike, his blade sliced it in half and the Omnic powered down.
While one OR-14 was down, the other one and the Bastion were still operational. The other ground troops had been little trouble, with McCree, Ashe and Hanzo making short work of them. However, the other two main threats were proving more difficult to beat.
It appeared that the OR-14 had been modified so that it could repair itself, similar to how the Bastion could. This meant that every time it's barrier went down, it simply stepped in front of the Bastion and absorbed most of the incoming damage, before placing another barrier down and letting the Bastion carry on.
Even with Tracer blinking behind them, the OR-14 was watching the Bastion's back, stopping her from getting too close. The situation had forced the two crusaders back behind the defences, which were now taking a beating from the Bastion's weaponry.
"Urgh, I can't close enough to place a pulse bomb." Tracer reported, as she blinked behind the defences, stopping next to Reinhardt. "That OR-14 is babysitting that Bastion too much."
"I have an idea!" Echo suddenly said, swooping down and hovering next to Tracer. "I can create a distraction, that should allow you to move closer to the targets."
"That could work."
Reinhardt looked over to the Bastion, seeing the OR-14 place down a fresh barrier, before agreeing.
"Alright, you two see what you can do. I'll have DVa and her squad give you some cover fire."
"Understood. Wait for my signal Tracer, then move in."
"Got it. What's the..?"
Lena wasn't able to finish before Echo took off, spinning as she flew up into the air. She quickly flew over the battlefield, avoiding most of the fire the enemies below sent her way and disappeared over the trees in front of the base.
When Echo emerged from the trees a few seconds later, Lena watched as a blue light surrounded her and then a virtual copy of herself appeared. The duplicated Tracer zipped forward, imitating the real one as much as possible and gaining the attention of the OR-14.
"Guess that's the signal."
With the OR-14 distracted, Lena blinked forwards, using the cover the three Meka pilots provided to move closer to her target. Once she was close enough, Lena waited for the Bastion to reload before she moved again, blinking straight on top of the Omnic.
"Heya."
The Bastion attempted to throw the Brit off, rotating left and right, yet Lena managed to hold on, reaching for a pulse bomb and attaching it to the exposed weak point on the back of the large turret. She blinked to safety as the bomb detonated, the explosion taking out the enemy Omnic.
With the biggest threat removed, Lena and the Meka pilots now focused on the OR-14. The Omnic had already taken some damage from its fight with Echo, who'd transformed back into her normal form, yet it had managed to keep repairing itself. However, now with Tracer and the Meka pilots attacking, its repair systems simply couldn't keep up. After a short battle, Echo used her focusing beam, melting through the Omnics armour and causing critical damage, shutting it down permanently.
With the Bastion and OR-14 threat eliminated, the Overwatch forces pressed their advantage, taking out as many enemy Omnics as they could. With their heavy hitting units destroyed, the Null Sector forces began falling back, heading into the trees and disappearing.
"Stay on you guard." Reinhardt said, taking note of the sounds of battle as everyone regrouped behind the defences. "From the sounds of it, they seem far from done. Get ready for another attack."
Overwatch dropship- Approaching Watchpoint Gibraltar
Morrison's suspicions were all but confirmed when he saw the Watchpoint in complete darkness. Since they still couldn't raise anyone from the base, Morrison followed his original plan, ordering the pilot to land a short distance away. The doors opened and Widow was the first person off, activating her thermal goggles and checking the immediate area.
"Clear."
The rest of the squad were off just as fast and the dropship took off, the pilot moving to a safe distance. They wasted no time, splitting apart to cover a larger area as they progressed towards the Watchpoint. The team hadn't been equipped for a night operation, so they only had Widow's thermal goggles and Morrison's tactical visor to work with. As they neared the base, Widow halted the squad, noticing movement in the trees just ahead of them.
"Wait. I'm seeing movement up ahead. Omnics. They're armed and match Null Sector designs."
"Copy." Morrison replied, his visor picking up the targets Widow had identified. "Hold position and see if they move on."
Most of the squad dropped to the ground, a couple of soldiers took cover behind some trees, while Wrecking Ball held further back, doing his best to remain hidden. Thankfully, the Omnics were small in number and seemed far too occupied to notice the squad. After briefly holding position, the group rushed off, heading back towards the Watchpoint.
"Alright, move out."
The squad began moving again, staying alert for any more unknowns. As they neared the base, their silent radios suddenly burst to life, transmitting surprisingly calm radio chatter.
"Omnic forces at the main entrance have fallen back again."
"Understood. The forces at position two are still engaging. They could be moving to reinforce that attack."
"Do you need reinforcements Captain?"
"Negative Reinhardt, keep your forces at the main entrance for now."
With the confirmation that an attack was underway, Morrison turned into Ana's comm channel.
"Ana, this is Morrison, come in."
"About time you showed up Jack."
"What's the situation?" Morrison asked, signalling his team forward.
"Null Sector attack. They cut the power but we're holding... something doesn't feel right though..."
"Copy. We're approaching the main entrance now."
"I'll inform Reinhardt, he's in charge of the forces over there."
Morrison's squad continued forward, finding no more hostiles blocking their path. Once they were in view of the entrance, Reinhardt raised his hand and spoke up, gaining the attention of the defending forces.
"Hold fire, they're friendlies!"
One of the crusaders stepped out into the open, raising their barrier towards the last known location of the Null Sector troops and walking across to the squad. They all huddled behind the crusader, keeping their weapons raised and taking no chances as they all walked to the defensive wall. The only exception was Wrecking Ball, who activated his shield and rolled across after everyone else. Once they were all inside the base, Morrison immediately took charge.
"Widow, check the rooftops."
Widow gave a brief acknowledgment, grappling to the roof without hesitation. Morrison then turned to Reinhardt and Fox, who was knelt down next to the crusader.
"What's the situation here?"
"We've held off two attacks here. Null Sector have taken heavy losses and seem to be focusing on Winston and Ana's position now." Reinhardt replied.
"Any casualties?"
"Yes but thankfully not many." Fox reported. "Having the crusaders definitely helped."
Morrison nodded. "Good. Have a squad move to reinforce Captain Amari. The rest of us will hold here for now."
"Copy that." Fox said, standing and running over to a nearby group of soldiers.
Morrison then looked up towards Zarya, raising his voice so she could hear him.
"Zarya, head over to Ana's position and give them some support."
The Russian nodded, rushing off as fast as she could.
"Any update on the bases power?" Morrison now asked, as a squad of soldiers began running the same way as Zarya.
"No. Torbjorn lead a team down to the power generators but we haven't heard from them since. I think something's happened but I couldn't send anyone while we were defending here."
Morrison nodded. "Agreed. Get a squad together and prepare to head down there. I'll take charge of things here."
While Morrison managed the defences at the entrance, Widow quietly made her way across the Watchpoint rooftops, searching for any hostiles. After scanning over each one with her rifle and checking those she couldn't completely see, she concluded that the area was clear.
She was about to contact Morrison when she heard a door open behind her. She quickly jumped off the roof, grappling onto the edge of the building so she could remain hidden. She watched as an Overwatch soldier walked into view, checking over the rooftop to make sure no one was around.
Widow kept herself pressed against the building, the lack of light making it easy to hide from the trooper. Despite the fact he was wearing Overwatch colours, Widow's instinct told her something was wrong. She activated her thermal goggles and scanned the area behind her, checking her surroundings for anyone who might see her and give her position away. Once she was satisfied she was truly hidden, Widow focused back on the soldier, watching as he spoke into an earpiece.
"Roof's clear."
Widow's instinct was once again proven correct, as a second person, a woman from the looks of it, grappled onto the other side of the roof, gently walking over to the trooper. Widow recognised the armour she was wearing as the same type Talon snipers wore.
"Status report." The Talon sniper requested.
"The team's ready to go ma'am." The Overwatch soldier reported. "Most of the Overwatch forces are busy with Null Sector, so there won't be much resistance."
"Excellent. We'll start with the primary target. Where are they?"
"She's inside a safe room in the main lab."
"Good. Have your squad lure her outside and I'll take the shot. Then we'll use the chaos to take out the other targets."
"Yes ma'am."
The sniper chuckled as the Overwatch soldier activated an earpiece and began talking to someone else. However, the snipers laughter was short lived, as she turned around and came face to face with Widow. After hearing a good chuck of the conversation, Widow had climbed onto the roof and slowly walked over to the two operatives. The sniper had no chance to react, receiving a sniper round to the chest before she could even reach for her weapon.
The soldier may have had more time to react but Widow's speed negated that advantage before he even knew he had it. His rifle was flung out of his hands, as Widow hit the soldier with her own weapon. Knowing he couldn't raise his pistol in time against her, the soldier instead reached for his knife.
He slashed towards his target, hoping to catch her off guard. However, it was a futile move. Widow dropped her rifle and grabbed the hand holding the knife. The next thing the soldier knew, he was on the floor, guessing that his arm was likely broken due to the extreme amount of pain he felt. He only stopped focusing on the pain when he felt his own knife against his neck, being held by an extremely angry Widowmaker.
"You going to talk? Or shall I break your other arm?"
The soldier whimpered, nodding his head in fear. He didn't know if his pistol was still in its holster, yet he wouldn't dare to try and find out. The fact he was still alive meant that she didn't consider him a threat. The last thing he wanted to do was make himself one.
"How many Talon agents are here?"
"I don't know..."
The soldier was cut off, feeling Widow press the knife against his throat harder.
"Wait, wait. I don't know for sure. Th...there's an infiltration squad of about seven, including me... otherwise I don't know about anyone else."
Widow wasn't convinced that the sniper and this soldiers squad were the only ones, yet she could tell this trooper genuinely didn't know. So, she moved to her next question.
"Who's your primary target?"
"It... it's Tracer's girlfriend."
Widow didn't need to hear anymore, hitting the soldier and knocking him out. She knew Emily would be a target for Talon, yet she was surprised she was considered such a high value target. After standing and picking her rifle back up, she contacted Morrison.
"Commander Morrison, come in."
"What the hell is going on up there Widow?"
"I've secured the rooftops but I found two Talon agents up here. I managed to capture one, who said there's more disguised as Overwatch soldiers and that they're targeting Emily."
"What? Why are they..? It doesn't matter. I'll inform Tracer and send Genji to secure the prisoner. Hold position until he arrives and then get back here, double time."
"Understood."
Widow kept her eyes on the unconscious soldier, briefly looking over to the Talon sniper while she waited. Even if the initial shot from Widow's Kiss didn't kill her, the subsequent blood loss from the wound certainly did.
As her eyes moved back to the unconscious soldier, her thoughts drifted to Sombra. She had no idea where she currently was or what she'd been tasked with. Widow knew Sombra could handle herself, yet it didn't stop her from being concerned about her.
"Amelie, you there luv?"
"Lena? What's wrong?" Widow asked, snapping herself back to the here and now.
"Morrison told me about Talon. Any idea how many I'm dealing with?"
"Non. All I know for sure is that they're disguised as Overwatch soldiers. So don't trust anyone and keep an eye out for any Talon snipers or assassins. I've killed one sniper but there could easily be more."
"Got it. I've got some help with me but I'll be careful."
Widow debated whether or not to ask about Sombra, yet she decided against it, considering Lena already had enough to worry about. Instead, she wished the Brit luck before focusing all her attention back to the situation at hand.
Watchpoint lower levels
"How it going?"
Sombra was watching the room, while Brigitte was knelt down behind her, busy working on the backup generator. The two had managed to reach the backup generator room with little difficulty, neither encountering any further Null Sector forces. That didn't mean they were safe though and while the engineer worked, Sombra kept watch for any hostiles.
Thankfully, much to the relief of Brigitte, the damage to this generator was nowhere near as bad as he other. Even without it being shot, the primary generator needed a lot more work on it. At least she alone could get this one started again.
"It's getting there." Brig answered, as she reached in and pulled another part out. She placed the damaged part down, reaching into the toolbox and finding a replacement. "I've almost finished replacing what's damaged. I just need a little longer to finish up the repairs and then I can restart it."
"How long do you think you need?" Sombra asked. "Not trying to pressure you."
"As long as nothing disturbs us, then it shouldn't take much longer."
Sombra decided to leave Brig to it, not wanting to distract her. They still hadn't found whatever was blocking their radio signals, so the sooner the power was back on, the better.
Brig clearly was thinking the same thing as Sombra, wasting no time with the replacement parts. Once the last part was in, she began checking over the generator, finding a wrench from the the toolbox and performing some minor adjustments to the internals of the generator.
As Brig continued to tinker, her concentration was suddenly broken by the sudden sound of metal hitting the floor. She turned and faced the room behind her, while Sombra raised her weapon, scanning the area for any movement.
The room fell silent again, until another sound was heard, this time sounding like small metal feet moving around. After a tense few moments, a single Null Sector Slicer appeared, its head moving between the two agents before it turned to run away. Sombra never gave the small Omnic the chance though, hacking it before it could take a single step.
Brig quickly followed up with a whip shot, hitting the Omnic against the wall, before moving over and hitting it another two times. The Slicer lay crumpled, its eye flickering before it shut down completely.
"Something tells me that wasn't the last one."
Before Brig could reply, the two agents began hearing movement outside their position. Even without seeing them, they could tell they were Omnics.
The engineer moved back towards the generator, and raised her barrier, yet the device didn't activate correctly, malfunctioning once again.
"Not now."
"What's wrong?"
"My barrier's malfunctioning again. That Bastion must have done more damage then I thought."
Brig knelt down and reached inside the toolbox, finding the same screwdriver she'd used before and quickly worked on her barrier.
As the engineer worked, a group of seven Slicers ran into the room, all heading straight towards the backup generator. Sombra opened fire, shredding the nearest of the small Omnics before aiming at the next. However, despite her best efforts, she couldn't destroy all of them before they reached the generator.
Fortunately, Brig managed to get her barrier functioning again, raising her shield just in time and absorbing the damage from the Slicers lasers. The barrier held out against the Omnics attacks, giving Sombra the time to destroy the Slicers one by one. They never retreated though, their lasers focused on their target until the last Omnic fell. Once they were clear, Brig lowered her barrier, giving it chance to recharge.
"Is that thing working properly?" Sombra asked, pointing to Brig's shield.
"Not really." Brig admitted, whispering in case any Null Sector forces were listening in. "Something's wrong with it but I can't fix it without taking it apart. It's working for now but it might fail again."
"We'll have to work around it then. Keep working on the generator. I'll keep you covered."
Watchpoint main entrance
When Widow arrived back at the main entrance, she immediately walked over to Morrison. Due to the fact he wanted her back here so quickly, she suspected that he had another urgent task for her. As she neared Morrison, she could tell the Strike Commander was busy talking to someone on the comms. She only managed to hear the end of the conversation, yet from what she heard, it sounded serious.
"Copy. Hold position until agents arrived. Mercy, get over to the main entrance to the lower levels, people need medical support."
The Strike Commander turned and noticed Widow approaching, waving Reinhardt over before he began talking.
"Widow, I need you to head into the lower levels with Reinhardt. Torbjorn, Brigitte and Sombra lead a squad down there to get the power back on but they were ambushed by Null Sector. Part of the team came back up but Brigitte and Sombra stayed down there. I need you two to go in, find them and help them get the power back on."
"Right away." Reinhardt said, while Widow simply nodded. "Any chance of having some more backup?"
Morrison looked over to the defending forces, debating his next move carefully. "I don't want to take too many agents away from the fight up here but I'll inform Mercy of the situation and ask her to join you."
"What about some troopers?"
"From what Widow reported, I'd rather not risk sending any soldiers with you. Until we work out who's Overwatch and who's Talon, I'm only trusting agents."
"Understood sir."
With that the two moved out, Widow following Reinhardt as they headed for the entrance to the lower levels. When they arrived, they found Mercy, who was tending to Torbjorn, while a few other medical staff examined the other soldiers present.
Mercy briefly looked up, acknowledging the two agents before returning to Torb. She placed a hand on his shoulder and a golden glow passing from her hand to Torbjorn.
"How is he?" Reinhardt asked, concern clear in his voice.
"He's okay." Mercy replied, standing and letting one of the other medical staff take over. "I've healed up the serious injuries but he'll still need to be moved to the medical bay."
"That's something good at least. Has Morrison filled you in?"
"He has. The medical staff here can take over, so I'm ready to go."
Reinhardt nodded. "Let's not waste any time then."
After Mercy checked with the medical staff once more, the three agents slowly made their way into the lower levels. Reinhardt kept his barrier ready, Widow activated her thermal goggles, while Mercy held her staff in one hand and her pistol in the other.
"She'll be okay Amelie." Mercy whispered, gaining the snipers attention while keeping her voice down. "I can see you're worried but Sombra and Brigitte will look out for each other."
Widow thought she'd hidden any look of concern, yet she wasn't too surprised that the doctor had seen straight through her mask. She didn't try to deny it though, instead taking a small breath and making sure she remained focused.
"I hope you're right Angela."
Authors note
Hey everyone.
So this chapter took a lot longer to get out then I wanted. I ended up rewriting sections of this a few times because I just wasn't happy with how it flowed.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter and see you all in the next one :)
