Hey readers! I hope you enjoy this chapter as I won't be updating tomorrow. Also, Percy makes a discovery and Zia has a moment of 'OH FUCK!' so that's fun.
Replies:
Undeath9087: Percy is not impressed at all. She is very angry at Desjardins.
Ryan Fowler: I mean- I get why, but none of the Kanes keep the god/goddesses inside of them at the end.
MKDemigodzilla-Warrior: Well you shall find out very very soon.
Guest: Can I just say, holy shit that's a hell of a review- and I've read it all, but I will also say that there's no way I can address everything or the response will be longer than the fic itself lol. I love the bond between Percy and Zia because it is different than Percy with her family. With Carter, Sadie and her mom she feels responsible for them, even if she probably shouldn't and doesn't need to. She doesn't feel responsible for Zia at all, which changes the dynamic. And I will say that the whole bloodbending side of things won't be happening yet- and when Percy first does it it will be entirely different than any of you expect.
PJ Fan 285: You shall soon see- as in in this chapter see.
Sekhmet. It was freaking Sekhmet. Percy could hardly believe it.
Percy was genuinely appalled at Desjardins. The man hated them because of their connections to the gods, but in a fit of anger towards them the man had summoned up Sekhmet- the goddess of war, destruction, vengeance, healing and plague. If she'd been summoned then she would hunt the three Kane children to the ends of the earth- and even then she wouldn't stop.
Thankfully Zia had been able to come up with a plan based on how Sekhmet had been stopped when she'd went out of control before.
Of course they didn't have any beer to dye red and disguise as blood to get the goddess drunk, but they had managed to find a salsa plant- as Percy put it, and working together they'd managed to slice open the huge tanks that held the sauce.
Sadie, Sally and Zia had stayed below and brought Percy and Carter time, and the plan had worked-Sekhmet had drank too much of the Salsa- and she'd turned into her other form- Hathor, and she'd well asleep shortly after.
And, somehow, the car was still intact despite the chase and the chaos of the salsa bath they'd given the rampaging goddess that had been out for their blood.
So they loaded themselves up into the car again, Percy sitting in the back with Zia and Carter this time while Sadie sat in the front with Sally- and Percy was fairly grateful for the fact that Sadie seemed to be warming up to her. Though Percy was also aware that Sadie had chosen to sit in the front because she didn't want to sit near Zia- it was very clear that Sadie blamed Zia for the House managing to track them, she'd taken it very personally.
Percy was pretty sure that Zia hadn't planned on it though, she looked so defeated and guilty.
Still, she also understood why Sadie was so angry, they were in a lot more danger than they'd been before, and Desjardins would just get more and more angry, more and more determined to hunt them down.
Well, Percy decided that she'd have to kick his butt next time they saw him. He needed to leave her family alone.
Percy shifted in her seat, turning her head to stare out of the car window as Sally drove- they were on their way to Phoenix now.
And she closed her eyes, letting out a slow breath as she let her mind drift. And she didn't say anything when Zia spoke up after what felt like a lifetime of awkward quiet in the back of the car.
"Carter, I'm sorry about... I mean, I wish the circumstances were better."
And even Percy could tell that Zia was just talking to Carter, so she closed her eyes, pretending to sleep to avoid any awkwardness.
"Yeah." her brother's voice was quiet, "I guess you'll get in a lot of trouble with the House."
"I will be shunned." and Zia sounded almost despondent, "My staff broken. My name blotted from the books. I'll be cast into exile. Assuming they don't kill me."
"You could come with us." and Percy didn't understand the tone of her brother's voice- he sounded almost- almost hopeful. As if he desperately wanted her to say yes- which was weird, sure Zia wasn't so bad but why would Carter care that much-
You really are oblivious little Demigod'
Percy pushed away the voice- oh she had a feeling she knew what the voice was, but she wasn't quite ready to actually admit what she was suspecting. It was too scary. It was one thing for Carter and Sadie to have gods inside of them but- she wasn't like them but- sure she was Blood of Pharaohs but she was also a Greek demigod. Sure she couldn't- she curled her fingers into tight little fists, shifting again slightly as she was, thankfully, pulled out of her thoughts by Zia's voice.
"Where would we go, Carter. Even if you defeat Set and save this continent, what will you do? The House will hunt you down. The gods will make your life miserable."
"We'll figure it out." Carter's voice was firm, "We have my mom, and Sadie and Percy. It might not be easy but I mean- we're not on our own. And with you- I mean, you know, with your magic- you can help Percy teach me and Sadie. You're way better than us. It would make things easier."
"You're kind Carter, but you don't know me. Not really."
"Maybe not yet but I want to."
"I-" Zia's voice was almost hesitant, "I suppose- Iskander did say that my life was about to change."
"Really?" Carter's voice was soft with surprise.
"He did." she paused, "He saw something in you and your sisters."
"I hope we live up to whatever he saw in us." Carter muttered the words.
"You will." Percy could almost hear the smile in Zia's voice, "Though- it won't be easy for you. Have you learned Set's secret name yet?" and Percy felt like she'd been struck by lightning, her whole body went tense as Carter sucked in a sharp little breath.
"I- how do you know we need it?"
"You stole Desjardins' book. Desjardins told us about it. He said it didn't matter. He said you could not use the spell without Set's secret name, which is impossible to get."
"I-" and Percy turned her head to look towards Carter as he swallowed hard, "We don't have it yet. Thoth said it could only come from Set himself or from the person closest to him. Sadie tried to reach out to Nepthys but it didn't work. And we got interrupted."
"Do you know where she is?"
"No." Carter shook his head, "I wish we did but we don't know where she went after they were freed-" Percy didn't hear the rest of what her brother said over the roaring in her ears.
And she swallowed hard, focusing as she projected her thoughts inwards.
'A-are you there?'
Well now, it's about time little one.
'Nephthys.' Percy hunched in on herself slightly, biting her lip hard, 'You're in my head aren't you? You- you helped me get to sleep, you've been-'
Laying as low as I could, helping you when you most needed it. Not that you need that much of my help. Your power is already impressive little one. And it will grow more.
'You know his name don't you. His secret name I mean.'
I do. And I will give it to you. My husband- his plan cannot be allowed to continue, he may not realise it yet but there are bigger things at play.
'Bigger than Set?'
You already know Persephone. You've seen what's to come. My husband needs to be stopped before he plays into the hands of chaos-
'I didn't think giant scary snakes have hands.' Percy couldn't even help herself in her thoughts, and the laughter she got in return was very soft, gentle.
Your courage and spirit do you credit little demigod. His name is Evil Day. And I am sorry. He is strong, he may yet survive-'Who's strong. Who might survive?' Percy's thoughts were almost frantic.
It was good that you did not drink the potion..
And then the goddess went silent and Percy couldn't help it, she slammed her fist against the car window hard in frustration.
"Percy!" Sally's voice was sharp as she glanced into the back of the car "Don't hit the window like that- what's gotten into you?"
"Are you okay?" Sadie's voice was almost concerned, "You look upset."
"I-"
"It's gonna be fine." Carter's voice was firm, "It's probably our fault mom. Zia and I were talking about- we were talking about how hard it's going to be find out Set's secret name."
"We'll figure it out." Sally's voice was firm as she turned her gaze back to the road, "Percy- don't- you should try to stay as calm as you can- it know it's hard but we will find a way to get his name-"
"You don't ha-" Percy was cut off by Sally letting out a yelp as she slammed her foot on the brake.
"What in the gods names is- is that a man?" and Percy instantly undid her belt and leaned towards the middle and forward so that she could get a good look through the front wind-shield. A man was standing in the headlights of the car in the middle of the road, maybe twenty yards ahead.
He was wearing a blue coat that looked tattered and worn- but Percy felt a rush of shock as she recognised him.
"Amos!" Carter's voice was excited and he was rushing out of the car quickly, as was Sadie, both of them rushing towards him.
Zia seemed much more hesitant, and Sally was blinking rapidly, "So that's Julius' little brother-"
"How did he find us-"
"Oh no." Percy felt as if she'd been dunked into ice water- except worse because she actually kind of liked ice water. And this feeling, yeah, it wasn't on her top ten list of things she wanted to feel again.
Because everything was sliding into place.
Zia and Nephthys had both been right, Desjardin's definitely wasn't Set- sure it might have made sense in some ways but, well, Set was manipulative, he knew how to play with peoples perception.
And Set and Osiris had always been brothers.
She remembered how insistent Amos had been about her drinking that potion- and Nephthys had said it hadn't she.
She wondered what would have happened if she'd drank it.
She snapped out of her thoughts when her mom opened the car door and climbed out, a smile forming on her lips- and her focus snapped back to the present, to Carter Sadie and Amos, stood in front of the car together- and she felt Zia's hand on her arm.
"Percy?"
And Percy swung her gaze to Zia- and she felt Zia tense, saw the look of dawning terror when their gazes met- Zia was perceptive.
She could see the fear in Percy's gaze.
"No-"
"Yes." Percy swallowed hard, giving a small nod. "I'm- she's in my head and he- it's... it's him-"
"You know his name." Zia breathed the words, "Percy-"
"I-" And then Zia was moving, launching herself into the front of the car, turning the keys and starting up the car- which made the
others all turn to look towards the car.
"Zia what are you-"
"Without you Carter and Sadie don't stand a chance." Zia's voice was sharp "And if Amos Kane is Set then he will recognise that you host his wife. He won't let you tell them-"
"Wait-" Percy felt a rush of panic but it was too late, Zia slammed her foot down and the car started moving.
Carter grabbed Sadie and Sally's arms, yanking them to the side as Amos dove in the other direction, narrowly avoiding being hit.
"ZIA STOP!" Percy screamed the words, "What are you-"
"He will kill you!" Zia didn't lift her foot, barrelling onwards even as the others yelled and screamed, all of them scrambling to chase after the car.
"We can't leave them with him!" Percy's eyes filled with tears as she lunged for the door- but Zia was faster, flicking child locks on.
Percy let out a frustrated cry as she slapped the car window.
"Percy they will not be able to stop him and neither will you! His host is more experienced, more powerful." Zia's voice was strained.
"We cannot let him near you!"
"How exactly am I meant to tell them his name then?"
"I will go there and tell them once you are safe." Zia declared.
"You don't care about me let me go back!" but she could feel Nephthys in her head, feel the goddess seizing control, forcing her to sit back down in the seat, to stop trying to break out of the car. Clearly she agreed with Zia.
"Iskander liked you! When I last spoke to him- after I took you to your room he told me that you were important! I will protect you Percy Kane. For him."
