The no-win situation they were facing just went from manageable to a lot worse. The Au pair took advantage of what she thought was a weakness on the NYPD's part when the detectives lowered their weapons to show that they wanted to talk. Kate watched as the knife started pulling tautly against Kevin's neck and leaving a trail of blood on the blade and his shirt collar.
"Nema potrebe povrijediti mog detektiva. Spusti nož i možemo razgovarati o ovome." Kate said.
"Ne!" Was the response from the woman.
There has to be a way that Kate can take advantage of the situation without revealing what she can do in the form of blinking. So knowing that blinking is not an option now, she decides to play against the woman's heartstrings. She hopes this works.
"Lucija, znam da se osjećaš loše zbog onoga što se dogodilo s malim dječakom o kojem si brinula. Ali moramo razgovarati. Obećavam ti da ako se odloži taj nož i pusti detektiva Ryana, ništa ti se neće dogoditi. Obećajem ti."
The Au pair just stands and watches Kate not releasing the knife from Ryan's neck, but is not pressing harder either. She doesn't know if what she's saying is true or not so the pressure stays on the blade.
Knowing that sometimes even the best-laid plans go to hell in a matter of a heartbeat, Kate watches as Ryan looks over to Esposito.
Esposito and Ryan are thick as thieves. They can communicate as efficiently in this type of situation and just like when they are playing Call to Duty together. Ryan looks Esposito in his eyes and motions his eyes left to right. Esposito points his finger to the right. Kevin understands that to be his right and if it works the way they hope it will the Au pair will be unguarded and vulnerable only for a split second. Not to be left out in the cold Kate can tell that they're going to do something drastic. So instead of being caught off guard, she tries one more time with Lucija to buy them some time.
"Lucija, moraš ispustiti nož i pustiti mog detektiva. Bit će vam puno lakše ako to učinite."
The second that she turned to face Kate to respond to her statement, she eased her hold on Ryan and the knife dropped away from his neck just far enough for him to turn away from the blade, grab her left arm hard, and turn away from her hold completely. Keeping the knife away from his neck he was able to draw her arm away from his body and turn away from her without being sliced up. The knife clumsily fell to the ground. Esposito was the first to raise his weapon and pointed straight at her chest.
"Move and you'll regret it!" Esposito yelled.
Ryan, who had escaped the woman's hold now has her hands behind her back and is placing her in handcuffs. It's then when Kate realizes that what Rick said was true. He did predict what would happen. Her believable meter just went into overdrive. She believes what he can do but he is swaying her more and more in that direction.
When they arrived back at the 12th Precinct the Au pair became disrespectful and negative towards the detectives who arrested her. She refuses to talk and just sits there. Kate is having none of this and she sits down across from her in the interrogation room and starts doing her job.

Knowing that she needs to get a full confession out of this woman, she would use a different tact to get her to confess willingly. So far she had not asked for a lawyer and that suited Kate just fine.
Esposito and Ryan are sitting in the observation room watching Kate. They both know that she will stop at nothing to get the confession she needs for her to put this person away for life.
"Lucija, are you aware of your rights?"
"Da."
"Oh, that's another thing, the only language that will be spoken in this room will be English. I know you have a good command of that language and from here on out it will be the one you will be using." Kate demands.
Lucija had the decency to look chastised.
"You are being held for murder in the first degree. We now have enough evidence to bring you to trial and have a jury convict you of these charges."
The woman just sat there with a smug look on her face.
"You can sit there like you think you're going to get away with this, but we have evidence against you that will seal your fate. Do you want me to go through it all or would you simply rather write out your confession as to why you killed little Garrett?"
Kate could see the small beads of sweat that were forming on her forehead. She just needed to play up a couple of things about how Garrett would have been as he was growing up.
"Did you know that Garrett was a carefree, innocent, and loving child, didn't you? He loved his parents and his sister. He will never love anyone ever again. What you did was snuff out his life before he even had the chance to live it. He could have been someone who might have cured a disease, ran for a political position, or even solve the mysteries of the world. But we will never know that because you ended his life way too soon. He won't be able to see his parents, play with his sister, or grow old. You are responsible for what happened to him, you and you alone. Tell me why did you do it?"
Kate can see that what she was saying about Garrett finally broke her. She had tears coming down her face. Then she spoke.
"I didn't mean to kill him, he was just acting like such a little brat. He was bothering me when I was trying to get my work done. So without looking after he ran up beside me I let my arm swing into his little head. He fell back and hit his head on the end table and he fell to the floor. He never moved. So I picked him up put him in his race car bed in his bedroom and left the room. I remember I had to pick up some things at the market for the people I was watching him for so I went down to the supermarket to get what they needed. I didn't mean to hurt him. I just didn't think that this could happen."
"But it did happen. A little boy is dead and you are responsible for it. Would have it been that hard to listen to what he might have wanted to say when he came to you? I don't think so. But instead, you lost your temper and swatted him away literally. I have no compassion for people like you who can't control your temper. I need you to write out exactly what happened on that day."
Lucija reluctantly picks up the pen and moves the yellow legal pad closer to her so she can start writing. Within an hour she is done with her statement. Espo and Ryan, who never left the observation room, are glad that they were able to get justice for little Garrett.
Kate sits at her desk knowing that the boys are making sure that their suspect is writing out her confession. She knows she should be starting on the paperwork to close the case out but her mind keeps wandering. It is going to a dangerous place and she doesn't understand why she hasn't talked to Rick about what she's able to do. She knows it's more of a defense mechanism on her part than having anything to do with explaining why and how she can do what she can do. Knowing that she has to come clean about what she can do she needs to think of a way to tell him that he would understand.

Rick, who has been kicking around his office for the past four hours has decided to take a break from his research into how Kate dies. He's been over it many times in the past four hours and what he has come up with is that no one's future is guaranteed.
Since it is close to five in the evening he pulls out a bottle of Glenlivet. His normal two fingers rule has been tossed aside as he adds ice to the glass. Something he has never done before. He's always drinking his Scotch neat but now he changes it up.
Xx
He downs the contents of the tumbler in two gulps and sets the glass down on the bar. He needs to clear his head and think. His thinking mechanism was an easy fix. The management at the loft had a complete gym in the basement set up since he'd moved into the loft. In less than five minutes he was changed, gloved up, and beating the hell out of the heavy bag. Clarity is the first thing he can grasp after his workout. He knows they have to talk to each other and he will make it a point to head over to her apartment this evening. Maybe then they can make some progress into what each other is thinking. He grabs a towel from the back of the leg press chair and towels off his body. His shirt is sticking to him due to the amount of sweat that he has produced since you started working out.
A shower will be his first priority. He leaves the gym and heads upstairs back to the loft. As he waits for the elevator, his mind goes to an idea that could work for Charlie in a new book. The elevator dings and he steps on pressing the button for the third floor. When the doors slide open on the third floor he exits and turns right. Within seconds he's through the door and shedding his workout clothes as he goes. Just as he was about to remove his workout shorts there are three hard knocks in quick succession at the front door. Bare chested, he turns around and heads for the door. When he opens it he sees Kate staring at her feet and when she looks up her face turns red because she can't believe she sees him shirtless, but she recovers quickly and says,
"Rick, we need to talk..."
Translations:
"There is no need to hurt my detective. Please put the knife down and we can talk about this."
"No!"
"Lucija, I know that you are feeling bad about what happened with the little boy that you were taking care of. But we need to talk. I promise you that if you put that knife down and release detective Ryan nothing will happen to you. I promise you."
"Lucija, you need to drop your knife and let my detective go. It will go a lot easier for you if you do."
