Chapter 2
Sayako's weekend mostly consisted of studying and playing computer games. In the evenings after finishing prep school, she had a part-time job that kept her out till 11. Such was the incident when she joined her community guild and walked right into an ongoing discussion about a person called Kira who was ridding the world of all evil.
rAgNaRok12: Soooooo many criminals have died between yesterday and today!
Jadex10: Fuck yh. Y should our tax be going to keep dem alive?
SayaNeko: How is he killing them?
NotYourAverageOtoko: Beats me XD! But all of dem had heart attacks! Like boom boom boom! Like the black plague lol ;D
The teenage girl couldn't frown at the gleeful responses that were pouring in support of this mystical character Kira. What was even more troubling was that she had no idea that some of the people she had played in the guild with for so many years held such austere opinions about justice. Killing all the criminals in prison . . . Sayako was sure that many had been tried unfairly and some were innocent, still waiting for their next hearing. How was Kira able to deliver justice to those who hadn't even received a fair trial? Wasn't that an indicator that Kira was not infallible in his justice as many were already declaring him to be?
SayaNeko: But some criminals were still awaiting trial?
Jadex10: yh we don't give a fuck
rAgNaRok12: Kira-sama would have known if they had committed the crime or not!
SayaNeko: Kira-sama?
NotYourAverageOtoko: Yh man, kira-sama? Really? y we calling him that? Is he God now?
Jadex10: in my eyes he is
SayaNeko: Ooookaaaay. This trend is gonna rot faster than my apples... speaking of, why are we suddenly meeting? Entrance exams are only a few weeks away?
Jadex10: gave up on those like last year lolololol
NotYourAverageOtoko: Have hope, my brave otoko! There must be one university in Japan that will take a deadbeat like you xxxxxddddd
Jadex10: yh, there is a monk uni for us virgins. Wanna go bro?
NotYourAverageOtoko: Nahhhhhh, I am saving it for when I get into To-Oh - I'll be laying with the senpais!
Jadex10: pfffffff yh my ass is more likely to get it than urs. and u getting into To-Oh is probs in ur dream.
rAgNaRok12: Phew, you guys really need to give it a rest. :SayaNeko, Sorry about the sudden summoning. The thing is that there is an online game in the making! The other cool thing is that they are looking for some people to code the program for the game - they need people who have at least C++ coding knowledge and I thought of you. I think they'll even pay - probs not as much as the minimum wage, but hey, it's a bit of cash doing what you love!
Jadex10: fffffuuuuuuuuck. yyy yyy didn't I learn to code? Eh, :SayaNeko teach me babe.
NotYourAverageOtoko: Why not just call :SayaNeko! Y call all of us to rub salt on our woundss :L you know broke af we are rn.
rAgNaRok12: I am getting there, my dear followers. Thing is if :SayaNeko becomes a member of this new game - we all get access to it. As 1st members! with exclusive benefits foreva! It's an uhhhhhmazing game!
NotYourAverageOtoko: does it have nice gurls with those big melons? I am in. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )
Jadex10: Or diii assss. if so I am in tooo. (‿!‿) ԅ(≖‿≖ԅ)
rAgNaRok12: you guys need to get laaaaaaaaid. and fast. Well :SayaNeko. What do you think? I know it's probably difficult with the exams and all, but they only need a few hours of your time every week. Also something good to speak about on your interview and CV.
SayaNeko: Seems tempting. But I already have a part time job at Cake and Maid. Plus I am borderline close to failing English. What sort of game is this?
Jadex10: uuu won't fail, baby! plz plz plz plz don't say no! i am dying to join a game as the 1st member. we'll literally be the strongest characters when all those noobs start joining xxxxxxxxxx
NotYourAverageOtoko: Wait, failing English? y tho? lemme guess - the speech?
SayaNeko: Mmmmmmm. o(〒﹏〒)o
rAgNaRok12: Shit :SayaNeko. Didn't know it was that bad. Well, the game is pretty much an RPG game in honour of our Kira-sama. You play as Kira-sama. Hunt down all the criminals - the more you kill, the more you rise! Isn't it amazing?!
Sayako nearly choked on her melon soda, but was fortunate that nothing dropped on her expensive keyboard. A game in honour of Kira? Weren't they seriously jumping the gun here? Why such devotion and who in their right mind had this crazy idea anyway - the fact that they had wanted C++ coding knowledge meant that the game was going to be sophisticated probably on the level of GTA. That kind of project was not only ambitious, but also one that required serious determination. The mastermind behind this had to be somewhat well-off if they were willing to also pay the programmers.
NotYourAverageOtoko: OH MY VENUS WITH THOSE BIG TITTIES! THIS IS AMAZING! (((; ఠ ਉ ఠ))
Jadex10: Fo reaaaaaal! fr! :SayaNeko, baby plz u gotta say yes! i'll help u with the speech - seriously.
NotYourAverageOtoko: Yh she is deffo gonna fail then. :rAgNaRok12, aren't you aiming for the stars too? help our little ojou-san here xxxx
rAgNaRok12: Sure thing, :SayaNeko. I am trying for To-Oh too to be honest and well, English is the one subject I am gonna definitely score well on. Want me to call you tonight?
The girl grimaced, her fingers trembling over the keyboard. The four of them had been friends for so many years despite never knowing each other's identities. They had heard each other's voices of course, and titbits of information about their daily lives, but past that they were simply gamers in one group who had each other's back. Yet all of a sudden, she felt discontented by their admiration for Kira - even rAgNaRok12 who she considered to be the genius had thrown all logic in the path of Kira's questionable justice. But the offer was sort of tempting . . . if she could just get someone to practice her spoken skills with then maybe she would have a chance for that place at To-Oh. Plus the scholarship which she desperately needed.
If only she had friends in real life then she wouldn't have to resort to this.
SayaNeko: It's a deal only if I score above a 90 in English. Up for the challenge, guys?
Jadex10: bruhhh we will give u da most critical criticism!
NotYourAverageOtoko: Constructive criticism is perhaps what u tryna say bro.
rAgNaRok12: :SayaNeko, you won't regret this! And besides, I never give up... now will you call me sensei? ᕕ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )ᕗ
Jadex10: waaaah, u guys should link up and get married in To-Oh.
NotYourAverageOtoko: i feel like i stepped in some shoujo manga! Kyaaa~~~ :rAgNaRok12 sensei, what do you say when you are *pleasuring* a grammar nazi?
Jadex10: My cute seito-san, i am not sure. wot?
NotYourAverageOtoko: May I touch you there, their and they're?
rAgNaRok12: Weirdos.
SayaNeko: Yeah seriously, cut it out guys. Anyways, I gotta go to prep school. :rAgNaRok12, I finish part-time at 11 and will be home by like fifteen past. Too late for you then?
rAgNaRok12: Naaah, I sleep at 3 anyway. Pulling 16 hours of studying D:
Jadex10: their meeting at night - a midnight affair.
NotYourAverageOtoko: They're*. U guys r like a married couple already.
Sayako didn't wait around to see anymore of it. A small smile touched her lips - these guys had saved her from losing all sanity in a world where she had no friends and barely any warm interactions. The funny thing was that she could also imagine their personalities and even had constructed an image of them in her head from what she knew of them. She had no doubt that rAgNaRok12 was popular in his school, whereas Jadex10 was likely to be on the side of the delinquents. NotYourAverageOtoko was smart, but lacked serious initiative - she was sure he could be anyone he wanted to be if only he tried. He was one of those kids who snuck their phones in class and played on the guild - after all, she had seen him online several times during school hours when she was home sick.
Yawns and watery red eyes - this had become the reality of Sayako's life. Only a few weeks till the entrance exams and for once she didn't feel like all hope was suddenly lost. Her online friends had helped write a pretty good speech and now everyday for an hour, they would link up to practice her speaking. In return, Sayako had forwarded her notes to all three of them and they had marveled at how well she had written explanations for difficult concepts. Sayako had brushed the praise off . . . if only they knew how non-existent her social life was. She practically did nothing, but study or work her part-time job.
The train signal was blaring noisily as she and a few other students waited quietly. The sun had just risen a few hours ago, but Sayako didn't want to be the last one arriving in class. The last person in class meant cleaning duty and she had limited hours now anyway thanks to rAgNaRok12's precious Kira-sama. What kind of a person was Kira? Was he just like her and her online friends? Did he feel emotions like they did? And why had he been chosen? Was this a new prophet or was this all just some elaborate scheme to generate fear among the masses?
The girl shook her head lightly and started to walk again when she realized that she had been the only one standing there. Why did Kira have to emerge at this time of the year? The crime in Japan had been rising for many years and it had been particularly bad last year too - even more so than this year. Why did Kira not make an appearance then?
"Light-oo~!" A gruff voice spoke from above her. "Why do I have to sit through your boring classes?"
Huh? Sayako missed a step, but only tripped slightly. She quickly corrected herself before stopping momentarily as Light Yagami walked past her - his eyes never turning to acknowledge her existence. Even in the morning when all of the students were rugged from lack of sleep, the topper student never looked wary or even slightly tired. Just how does he do it, she wondered before turning to look behind her. He had an acquaintance who had just spoken to him, but there was only the sight of a few approaching students - many feet away from her.
Light Yagami was several feet ahead of her now - thanks to his long stride. But floating above him was a creature . . . blue and so outwardly that Sayako didn't know what to think. Her mind had seldom ever gone blank and her heart had never functioned so poorly, but suddenly everything felt like it was shutting down. Horrific yellow eyes, sharp canine teeth, abnormally long limbs and he floated in the air - sometimes higher and lower. But just before the humanoid-looking monster had turned, Sayako's eyes had closed and she began to fall - angel of death, she thought just before the last of her senses escaped.
"I swear it feels like someone is looking at me!" The shinigami complained, before looking at the fallen girl on the train tracks. "Ne~! Light-oo~! Did you just write her name in the death note?"
"What?" Light finally found something Ryuk said worthy of acknowledgment. He turned around to see what Ryuk was talking about and couldn't help, but raise a thin brow. This was what it was coming to for some students, it seemed. As the entrance exams were approaching, he had heard many stories of students committing suicide. Naturally, he had felt no sympathy for them - idiots were wasteful and had wreaked enough havoc in the world. It was a good thing they were killing themselves or eventually he would have had to.
Ryuk floated closer to him. "Shouldn't you help her or something? She is wearing your school clothes."
Not really. But looking around he knew that he had been spotted in the distance by the giggling groupies. If he was to walk away now without helping the victim, rumors about him could start to fly. And here he had been hoping to reach school early to get maximum justice time in - guess, unpredictable events are sometimes out of our control.
With a pained sigh, he walked over to the tracks and stared at the girl. She seemed vaguely familiar in the back of his memory, but her name badge reminded him of her identity. Sayako Kurohashi. She had been in his class since middle school. That's all he knew about her, but considering how little he remembered about her only meant that she was a wallflower. His eidetic memory didn't allow faces or significant memories to escape his mind so Sayako Kurohashi had to be someone who had never made an impression on him. Then again, who even had ever made an impression on him? Probably Ryuk, but that was another case altogether.
"Kurohashi-san." Light shook her shoulder. "I think you should speak to the student support advisor. They can help you deal with . . . any issues."
When she did not move at all, Light bit his tongue from telling her to go and jump off the cliff nearby where she wouldn't drag everyone else in the mess. Hell, he would have written down the directions for her too. What a waste of time. The groupies were now in earshot distance and he wondered if he should just tell them to deal with this.
"I think she passed out, Light-oo!" Ryuk cackled peering at her pale face. "Maybe she's having apple withdrawal symptoms like me!" To emphasize his point, Ryuk turned upside down. Light internally snorted but paid him no attention. He hadn't realized that she had fainted - and that too on the train tracks. Hmph, some people didn't even need a death note to kill them - they just had terrible luck following them around like a useless shinigami.
"Kyaa~! What happened!" One of the loud girls cried rushing over to his aide. Behind her, her two friends were now rushing in their direction. All three of them had an excited expression that they were desperately trying to mask behind their fake concern. Excited . . . to no doubt be in his presence or even have a chance of speaking to him.
Light quickly presented her with an equally fake concerned smile of his own. "It seems that Kurohashi-san here has had a fainting spell."
The girl looked down at her for the first time. "Ehhh~! How awful." She said no more, her eyes tracing his face again as if the fainted girl was bare of her concern.
Light wasn't too bothered himself. She was no concern of his either, but she had been thrust upon him just like all the other unpredictable events that had disrupted his weekend from executing the criminals. The most unpredictable of all had to be his sister Sayu and the fact that Ryuk had conveniently held important information back from him which had forced him to spend an entire day making a hidden compartment in his drawer. Still . . . some measures had to be taken to ensure that his secret identity remained hidden.
"Light-kun!" The other two girls gushed dreamily as he picked up the deadweight and cradled her in his arms. Before they latched on to him, it was probably best he took off.
"The hospital is too far from here - it will be easier if the school doctor saw to her." Light explained for the sake of their single-digit IQ brains.
They practically fell to the ground in a hopeless mess of mush. "Light-kun, you are so reliable~!"
Ryuk guffawed with laughter. "Ne, Light-oo. You are quite the popular kid, aren't you?"
Light focused on taking long strides and ignoring the shrill of the tailing girls and Ryuk. He passed one murderous glance at the girl in his arms before allowing his facial muscles to relax again. Soon he would be in class delivering justice, he thought, controlling his twitching fingers as they longed to pull out the death note and send all those who had made the world rotten to hell. He was meant for this. Ryuk may have said that Light finding the death note was accidental, but Light knew that nothing in life was ever a coincidence. Events in life were either a coincidence or unnecessary obstacles. Like deadweight Kurohashi here.
"Ah, what happened!" The female doctor cried, her face quickly losing the blush that had acquired as he had entered. She guided him to the empty bed and Light restrained himself from chucking the girl and bolting out. If this whole incident earned him cleaning duty today, he was going to murder someone with his bare hands.
"Kurohashi-san collapsed on the way to school. I found her face up so there is a chance that there could be a head injury, sensei." He explained with a sickly sweet tone. Inside, he felt clinically detached from the well-being of his fellow student. With her kind of luck, she would probably be shot dead by the last remaining criminal in Japan before Light would get to write his/her name in the death note. A world with no criminals . . . his dream would soon be true. A smile begged to overtake his face.
"Yagami-san, thanks to you, Kurohashi-san here will be seen to." She smiled, reaching towards the drawer to look for the IV line and saline solution. "Oh, dammit. It seems that I have run out of them! Yagami-san, please if you could watch Kurohashi-san for a few more moments? I will be right back! In the meantime, if you could please inform Kurohashi-san's parents about this incident! I am sure she wouldn't mind you using her cell phone!"
The shinigami roared with laughter this time. His host human's face was so dangerously blank that for a second, Ryuk was thrown back in time to the memory of his previous host's face. His face had been blank too when he had died - simply put Ryuk had found him uninteresting and that stupid boy's reckless actions had led him to his death. Ryuk only had to write his name in his death note and thus that had been that.
"Waste of time." He muttered darkly, glowering at the girl who appeared even paler under the white light of the room. But now that he was alone with the girl plus a floating shinigami, Light didn't bother hiding his disdain as he harshly searched her blazer pocket for her phone. For once, he wished that he had feigned an under the weather excuse to his mother and stayed home. That way he would have written about 300 or so criminals down already.
:SayaNeko-san! I heard from fellow guild member rAgNaRok12-san that you have kindly agreed to share your immense coding expertise for our new "Kira-sama rules the world" guild. I would like to welcome you to our small team of four programmers and would also like to extend you the opportunity to manage AND lead the production of this game. Truly, I have heard of some of your projects and have had the chance to see them from rAgNaRok12-san and I have to say that it is phenomenal and truly humbling that someone of your caliber has decided to lend us the skills. What is more amazing is your devotion to this project - I hear that you are a final-year student studying for the entrance exams. The time that you sacrifice will go on to producing a platform for all of Kira-sama's followers to come under one roof. I am sure if Kira-sama was to know of this project, He would surely extend His blessings upon you.
I look forward to hearing from you to arrange a convenient time for our project planning meeting. Please take care of yourself SayaNeko-san and extend my warmest welcomes to your other guild members. Like you and the few others involved, they will have VIP access as 1st members once the project has been made public.
With warm regards,
KiraIsJustice.
It had been three days and he had already become famous. Light allowed the malicious smirk to portray his glee - he already had a band of followers preparing a platform for his heralding! And was it not a rather small world, he mused, looking at the girl for the first time with a slight bit of acknowledgment. His own classmate was involved in a project that would allow him to transmit news to his followers and from the way that the person on the other end spoke, it seemed that Kurohashi had an excellent coding background. Light hadn't bothered to learn too much about programming, but if he was to he was sure that his skills would surpass hers. He was, after all a genius.
Typing a quick message to the contact under the name Otou-san, Light returned the cell phone back to her blazer. Before leaning back, he whispered his final parting words. You better not screw this up, Kurohashi.
The doctor entered just as he began to leave. For his pain, she wrote him an excuse note that would allow him to avoid the punishing cleaning duty. And as Light strolled towards his homeroom class, he once again reiterated words back to himself. No event was ever a coincidence. Kurohashi's fainting spell had made him realise that he was picking up power. Soon . . . he would be justice in the whole world.
Author's Note: Here is Chapter 2. Writing Light is so terrible sometimes - you really gotta think like an asshole. Hope I didn't make him too OOC! I am dreading writing L, but I hopefully will do enough character analysis before it comes to that!
Also if anyone is confused why Sayako can see the shinigami, it is because of the Death Eraser! Please just remember that one rule for now.
Thank you for reading and the love 3 and I will see you all soon x
