Hero

"And I actually saved the day. I didn't even get beaten over the head with a glass bottle for once, either! They probably would have all died if it weren't for me shooting that thing. But you know what? No one even said thanks to me. And I saved their bacon, as well. It's just not fair." He sighed, folding his arms over his chest, having apparently run out of steam for the moment.

Roy peered up over the top of his newspaper at his friend, wondering if he should say something instead of 'Shut up, Hughes'. "I'm sure they're heartbroken at having forgotten you, Maes. Now go away." He heard Maes huff at his sarcastic reply, but just lifted his newspaper up and ignored him again. It was best to ignore Maes when he was in a mood like this.

"Of course, I save people a lot, but not like this. This was saving the world sort of stuff. And you don't do that every day, let me tell you! I bet a lot of people are alive today because of me. Doesn't it make you feel happy, Roy? Even a grump like you can't deny I did something good!" Roy continued to ignore Maes. Sometimes he wondered if he believed his friend's story or not. He was told it often enough, anyway.

"I'm a hero, Roy!" Hughes blathered on, waving his arms in an exaggerated gesture. "People owe me their lives! I should have a trophy or something. I -" Roy sighed, looking up at Maes over his newspaper. "Go away. Go bug someone else for once." The police officer pouted slightly at his friend, leaning back in the armchair. "But no one else listens to me like you do, Roy. You're my best friend." Roy found himself fighting the smile off of his face, instead, he scowled.

"Since when have I been listening? Go away and stop bothering me."

Okay. So maybe he was quite proud of Maes.
