"We're lost."
"No we're not. We just, uh, took the wrong turn, is all!"
"That literally translates to 'we are lost'."
"No, it doesn't!"
"Yes, it does. Geez, I don't remember you being this bad at directions!"
"So are you!"
Selene and Helena had been arguing for a solid minute, wandering around a forest in the Kingdom of Vale, more specifically, Forever Fall. The forest stuck in a perpetual state of fall, it's trees and grass always seemingly red and orange. They had volunteered to do some extermination on a Grimm infestation in said forest that's been terrorizing the poor locals. And unfortunately, they took a wrong turn by mistake and were hopelessly lost.
"This wouldn't have happened if you didn't make me drop the map!"
Helena blushed in embarrassment, trying to stammer out a comeback, but whatever she thought of immediately died in her lips. So, childishly, she went for a low blow. "W-well, at least I don't flirt with my weapons and pretend that they're a person!'
The younger twin flushed in anger and rounded at her older twin. "THAT WAS ONE TIME AND YOU KNOW IT! AND WE AGREED TO NEVER SPEAK OF IT EVER AGAIN, YOU DAMNED GOOSE!"
"Whatever, weapon fetish." she scoffed.
"Oh? Big talk for a monster who eats pizzas with bananas!"
"Hey, screw you! It's delicious!"
The two of them kept on bickering, trading barbs and insults back and forth. Seemingly going unnoticed, a bush began to rustle as if something was inside of it. A Beowolf emerged, sensing some near by negativity. It spotted where it was coming from and went towards them with a snarl, only to be put down quite quickly, a huge gaping hole on its chest. Helena smirked, twirling around her revolvers while Selene drew out her sword.
"Finally. I was starting to wonder when they'd come." she said a pack of the Wolf Grimm completely surrounded them, growling. Turning to her sister, she quirked an eyebrow. "So, how about a little competition?"
Helena perked up, giggling. "Oh? Go on."
"Whoever gets the most kills is the obvious victor. Loser treats winner to lunch."
"Now you're talking!"
The Deadly Moon smirked, running her hand through her hair as she shifted towards a blank look that gazed upon the Beowolves. The Burning Sun grinned and lined up her shots, letting out a war cry.
"Let's start this party!"
They broke away from each other and charged at the monsters. Helena rolled over a Beowolf and rained bullets at them. However, unlike the earlier on, her shots seemed to only chip at their armor and not penetrate them, making her frown. She kicked away their claws and launched herself into an open-wide space. Ejecting her current ammo, she pulled out her clips for demon hunting and loaded them into her guns.
Ascending into the air, she flipped herself and lined up her shots once again, grinning at the pack. "Open wide!"
Helena rapidly pulled the trigger, letting loose a rainstorm of bullets that, this time, pierced through their tough armor. Landing down with a twirl, she holstered back her guns and smacked her fist together. An aura of blaze coated around her as Ifrit materialized into her hands, burning those who tried to lunge at her supposedly vulnerable state.
The Daughter of Vergil charged the flames into her palms and crashed it into the ground with a roar, creating a wall around her that incinerated those close enough. She dashed forward and released a magma uppercut at three Beowolves, launching them into the sky. Going after them, she kicked them viciously, her greaves shrouded in flames and stomped them back down.
Helena cartwheeled over to a pair of the Wolf Grimm, hitting them with the heel of her foot, before knocking their head off clean with a forceful, double-fisted uppercut. She spun around and raised her guard up against an Alpha trying to chomp down on her. It, instead, bit onto the gauntlets. Ifrit didn't take kindly to this and proceeded to melt off the poor monster's head off.
Rocketing herself into the sky, Helena rapidly punched the air, shooting out fireballs with the Devil Arms. Luckily, she managed to hit every shot and mostly avoided burning down most of, well, anything. Crashing down onto a disintegrating corpse, Helena looked over to her younger twin and called out to her.
"How many are you at, sis? I just bagged fifty!"
Selene silently sliced through the numerous Beowolves that came at her with Killer Umbra. She blocked an attack from behind without even looking, before promptly bifurcating its arm and slashed off its head. Clenching her left hand in activation of Nyx, she willed her shadow and immobilized about Grimm, all perfectly lined up. She held back her blade and released a horizontal wave of bluish energy, slicing them all in half.
With the brief moment of rest, she glanced at her sister and smirked. "Unfortunately for you, I am up by one."
Hearing a rustling behind her, Helena quickly spun around and pulled out one of her guns, firing off a single shot and out slumped over a dissipating Beowolf. "Heh. Looks like we're tied."
Before any of them could figure out a way to break the tie, they felt the ground begin to tremble, as if something large was approaching them. The twins turned around and saw a Beringel lumbering towards them. And it seemed far bigger compared to its regular species. Selene looked at Helena and saw her slightly trembling at the sight of the Gorilla Grimm, no doubt her fear taking hold of her.
No matter how many times they bickered and fought, they were still sisters and cared for each other's safety. She took her hand and gave it a light squeeze in comfort. Helena took in a deep breath, looking a bit more calm. Selene smiled and nodded. The twins readied themselves for combat while the Beringel pounded its chest and let out a loud cry as it came at them. But of course, they broke off and rolled away from each other. Helena steadied herself and chucked multiple fireballs at the Beringel.
It grunted and smacked each projectile away, beating its chest in pride. Selene dashed forward and struck the damned ape, yet her attacks proved ineffective against its defenses. To her surprise, the Beringel grabbed her and slammed her around like a rag doll before throwing her right at a tree, breaking it down.
Ripping out two trees out of their roots, the gorilla Grimm threw them at Helena like javelins. The adventurous blond burned the two into ashes, only to be caught off-guard as the Beringel had leaped forward and managed to get a hold of her, hanging her upside down by her leg.
Every ounce of calmness was thrown out of the window. Helena trembled and whimpered as the Grimm Gorrila held her in its grasp. The only thing that was in her mind was the traumatic experience that led to her developing her fear.
Helena stared down at the silver-backed gorilla in slight awe. She, her parents and her sisters were visiting the local zoo at Vale for a family vacation, and it was her first time seeing such an animal in real life. With a quick glance, she saw that her mother and sisters were busy looking at another exhibit, making her smirk. She climbed up the barrier, and-
"What exactly are you planning to do, young lady?"
Helena stiffened, hearing her father's voice. She turned around, her father standing right behind her with a raised brow and his arms crossed, his face very stern with his hair down for once. Helena looked sheepish, rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment.
"Erm, I was just…gonna take a closer look at the monkeys?"
Vergil's brow quirked higher at this before wagging his finger at her. "No. This is supposed to be a bonding trip. Meaning, we're supposed to spend time with our loves one during the duration of your stay here."
"Ah come on, dad!" she whined out. "It's just one quick, little peek. That's all!"
Even then, he didn't relent and continued to scold his daughter. "No means no, Helena. Now, come on, we're about to-"
Helena lost her balance and fell right into the enclosure. Numerous bystanders and tourists saw this happening, immediately breaking out to gossiping and chatter. Vergil shook himself out of his stupor, running up to the edge and called out to his child.
"Helena!"
Receiving no response, he was about to climb over, only to be stopped by two zoo workers from entering.
"Unhand me, you fools! My daughter just fell in there!" Vergil said. He could very well toss the two like they were nothing, but he restrained himself, not wanting his peaceful life with his family to be disturbed.
"Sir! Just calm down, sir. We've already signaled for the gorillas to return inside. Just please wait a few minutes for that to happen and then we can pick her up."
Finally, they let him go once he had calmed down. Vergil dusted himself off, staring worriedly down at the gorilla's habitat. However, unbeknownst to the zoo workers, one of four gorillas did not heed to the signal.
Helena groaned out in pain. Her fall down had mostly been broken by the bushes, and then by the moat. A shadow cast over her, making her blink. It was one of the silver-back gorillas, looking down on her. Now that she was so close to the animal, Helena couldn't help but feel a bit scared and intimidated by it.
Then, unprovoked, it grabbed her by the leg and started dragging her through the water, and out into the open view where many onlookers could see. All of them cried out in horror as the gorilla kept on harshly pulling the poor girl. It didn't care that Helena was just a child who accidentally fell in. It kept on treating her like a ragdoll, making her bruisers and cuts to all of her exposed skin.
The zoo workers couldn't help but feel stupid for forgetting about this particular gorilla, who was known for being a troublemaker, rebellious against authority and very territorial. They looked towards where Vergil was at, only to find that he already dropped into the habitat.
The Son of Sparda landed down gracefully and slowly straightened himself, staring impassively at the large primate. "I'll only say this once - unhand my daughter, now."
It answered by roaring at his face and tried to strike him. Vergil jumped back and materialized out a single Summoned Sword, hovering over him menacingly.
"Last warning. Do it, or I'll shoot."
Even at threat, it didn't back down, pounding its chest. The Blue Demon cocked its head and mercilessly fired off his signature projectile, slicing off the gorilla's arm. It howled in intense pain, giving Vergil ample time to grab his daughter and climb back up in quick succession.
As he had finally resurfaced, he took the time and inspected his daughter's condition. It was not pretty. She was trembling in pure fear, crying into his chest. Burying his fury, he spotted a Divinity Statue right around the corner. A Vital Star can quickly patch her up.
Vergil pushed through the gathering crowd, sending a withering glare at the two workers, before turning to head back to his wife and children.
The entire spectacle went viral for over a day, before being promptly silenced. The gorilla died, and the blame was promptly directed at the zoo due to its lack of safety and protection for the visitors, and most importantly, the curious children. No charges were made on the Arcs, but they got a new fur rug.
From that day, Helena was shaken up and developed pithecophobia, but didn't want to be submitted to therapy because of her pride. At times, Selene felt bad for thinking that her twin deserved what happened to her due to her lording over how she was older, and always got the better things.
But that was then. This is now. Helena had grown up and changed. She needed to save her sister. Selene pushed herself up and switched Killer Umbra into its scythe-form, and tossed it right at the Beringel's wrists. The blade managed to sever one of it, causing the Grimm to let out a loud cry of pain as it dropped Helena. The Deadly Moon blinked in and dragged her sister out of the way as the Beringel began to throw a tantrum at the lost of its hands. She settled down her sister, still frozen in fear. With a sigh, she slapped her harshly across the cheek to get her attention.
"Helena, snap out of it! You're supposed to be stronger than this. That Grimm is just beneath you. Beneath us! Don't let what happened years ago get a hold of you! We're supposed to be Sparda's grandchildren! What's an ape compared to an angel? Now, are you a coward, or are you a fighter?"
Her only response was to rub her reddening cheek, glaring at Selene. "Did you really have to slap me so hard?"
"Deal with it. Now, let's end its life."
The twins let loose a loud roar and transformed into their Angel Trigger. However, their forms became different while in the presence of their Devil Arms. Helena's wings were dragon-like instead of feathery ones. Instead of a halo, she received horns and spikes. Her entire body was covered in scale-like plating, her eyes very serpentine-like. Selene, however, was mostly unchanged, except her usually blue colors had been replaced with black, along with her hair. Her halo disappeared and her wings turned bat-like.
The Beringel took a step back, feeling scared of their new forms took notice. Helena couldn't help but grin.
"Heh. Looks like the tables have turned. Let's do this!"
They split off and ascended into the air, confusing the the gorilla on who to target. The Burning Sun gathered hellfire into her palms and hardened them into a meteor-like shape. She grinned and chucked them at the large Grimm. The Beringel roared and tried to smack them away like he did earlier, but didn't expect for them to be way hotter and ended up getting burned.
While distracted, Selene ran up towards it and bifurcated the arm that was hand-less and gave it a nice scar over its right eye. She kicked herself off before she could be grabbed and planted Killer Umbra on the ground to land on. She crossed her arms, watching as the large Grimm stood tall and pounded its lone fist on the ground in an effort to cause a minor tremor.
"Nice try. But here's how it's done!" called out Helena. She dive bombed down and crashed her fist onto the ground, releasing a geyser of magma that launched the Beringel into the sky. She conjured up a large fireball, but made no move to throw it as its purpose was already being fulfilled.
Selene smirked and flicked her hands to multiple directions. It then noticed the numerous, black tendrils that crawled along the ground and seemed to come after it. The Beringel jumped up, only for the shadows to follow after it and pull it back to the ground. The tendrils formed into needle-like shapes and started to sew over the Beringel, forcing it onto its knees. The gorilla let loose a roar, trying to set itself free from its restraints but the shadows proved strong.
Helena calmly walked over to the immobilized Grimm and drew out her two guns. She gripped on them tightly, channeling it with her angelic energy. When she was just a few feet away from it, she stopped and lined up her shots. As the Beringel began to panic, Helena could only take satisfaction as her guns glowed brightly. She uttered a single world and then pulled the trigger.
"Bingo."
The two charged up shots struck the Beringel in separate places - one in the head, the other straight through its chest. Selene called away her shadows, letting it fall down with a thud as its body began to slowly disintegrate. Helena sighed and fell down. Her twin went over to her sister, and looked over her in concern.
"You okay?"
Dropping her Angel Trigger, she smiled at Selene and nodded. "Yeah. I'm fine. Thanks, sis, for helping me out there and literally slapping some sense in me."
Selene smiled, turning back into her regular self. "Why wouldn't I? You are my twin sister after all. Someone had to do it, and father's not around to do so."
Offered a hand, Helena helped herself stand up and wrap her arm around her younger sister. Surveying the field, there little bout with the Beringel had yielded mostly no damage, apart from the trees it ripped off and some patches burnt because of Helena's usage of Ifrit. Shaking their head, the two of them headed back.
"Oh, I won by the way."
"No, you didn't. That Beringel was a team effort."
"That doesn't matter, I'm the one who shot the killing blow!"
The both of them continued walking away, arguing with a smile on their faces. Unknown to them, a secret camera had been watching them. Hidden within the foliage. It was the one who sent the Beringel at the twins, after all. It had recorded their every move, and even sent out a drone to retrieve the remains of the Beringel. It returned back to where it came from once it was done, with no one the wiser.
Next chapter, we'll be going back to Vergil and Jeanne in Fortuna, so look forward to that, I guess. If you all have any recommendations as to what other Chronicles chapter I should make, let me know.
