Lee was watching from very nearby. Amanda had not spotted him, and he was grateful for that. He didn't want her putting herself in danger by inadvertently looking at him.
"I have eyes on them. Has he said anything yet?" Lee said over the 2-way radio to Francine.
"Honestly, no, not much of anything yet." She replied.
Lee was both relieved and frustrated to hear this. He wanted this assignment over ASAP.
"Well, what HAS he said" Lee asked.
"Not much. She has been doing most of the talking."
"Uuuggghhh! Amanda! Let him lead the conversation!" he said to himself.
"So, Jessica. I assume you have what you promised me?" Pierce said to her as they strolled back towards the garden's entrance.
Amanda nodded. "Yes, of course I do. As promised."
Pierce did something that resembled a smile but was much more sinister.
"And you were able to get all the ones I asked for?"
"Yes. It wasn't easy but I told you I would get them for you. I need the money. Speaking of, where is my money?"
Francine cringed as she listened to Amanda.
"Amanda just asked for her money" Francine relayed over the 2-way.
Pierce reached into his jacket. Amanda's eyes widened and Lee aimed his gun at Pierce's head in anticipation of something other than an envelope coming out of his jacket.
"Right here" he said holding out the envelope. "$20,000 as promised."
Amanda opened her purse and took out the envelope. The two exchanged their parcels at the same time. She put the money in her purse, and he opened the envelope to examine the merchandise.
"Excellent, Jessica. I thank you very much for these. My buyers will be very happy."
Amanda forced a smile.
"Would your buyers be interested in anything else? As I told you before, I need the money. I could do another job for you."
Pierce did that sinister smile of his again and gave Amanda a sideways glance.
"Maybe if you told me something about your buyers, I could tell you what I can get my hands on."
"Careful, Amanda!" Francine said as she listened in.
"Tell you about my buyers? Well, why not."
Amanda's eyes grew wide.
"The Russian's my dear. After I leave you, I'm going to go collect my $2 million for these." He said patting his jacket.
Amanda then noticed him reaching back into his jacket. She got a bad feeling.
"You know, my dad would have loved it here." Amanda said sharply as she saw Pierce pull a gun out of his jacket and point it at her.
"That's the signal!" Billy grabbed the walkie-talkie. "Lee, go in now. Amanda just gave us the signal she needs to get out of there. Lee, do you copy?"
Lee was already sprinting across the garden towards Pierce and Amanda, gun drawn.
"As for other jobs, Ms. Hagen, I do not think you will be available. You see, I never use the same person twice, especially a woman. Too many loose ends. But I do thank you for these."
Pierce pointed the gun at Amanda. Amanda began to see her life starting to flash in front of her eyes. "Lee's not going to get here in time" she said to herself unaware that Lee was almost upon them.
Suddenly, Lee burst through the hedge and knocked Pierce down. He sat on top of him and punched him twice right in the face, the second punch breaking his nose. Amanda picked up the gun. Within seconds, 3 agents were on the scene with guns drawn and pointing at Pierce.
"We'll take it from here, Scarecrow" one agent said to Lee.
Lee stood up and walked over to Amanda, embracing her as tightly as he could. He could feel her tremble slightly. Lee picked up the 2-way.
"This is Scarecrow. I've got her."
"Roger that" Billy replied.
Amanda let out a long breath she hadn't realized she had been holding.
"Oh, boy! I'm glad that's over!"
