"He hit you."

She didn't raise her head to look at Remus. Instead, she remained huddled in the corner of the dark corridor, hair hanging in her face, tears in her eyes.

Remus knelt down before her, and he placed his hand on her arm. "Lily, please..."

"Go away," she sniffed. She didn't need him here on top of everything else, complicating things like he always did. She pulled her arm away from him, tugging on the sleeve of her white blouse.

He just sat there. She couldn't see his face but she knew it would be beautiful, confused, those wonderful brown eyes perhaps sparkling with tears.

Lily couldn't resist raising her eyes to his, and saw that they were indeed wet. Her lips twitched in sorrow, and at the sight of Remus, prepared to share her pain, she collapsed into tears, falling into his arms. There was something comforting about the softness of his grey sweater.

"Don't cry, Lils," he said softly, his own voice wobbling.

"He... he hit me!" she cried. "He's supposed to l-love me, and he... he hit me!"

He made a noise as though he was going to say something, then seemed to think better of it, instead saying quietly, "I know, Lily, but it's okay, I'll look after you."

She looked up into his eyes, the eyes that held pure love for her, and felt a pang in her chest. "I know. Thank you, Remus."

She wanted him to kiss her. She wanted those soft, loving lips up against her own. Remus was obviously just being a friend. Maybe he had went off her...

She was crying hard again. She buried her face in his shoulder, lost.

"Lils, please," Remus pleaded. "Don't cry."

"Do you love me?"

Remus sighed. He didn't seem surprised by the question. "You know I do. Now let's get you cleaned up." He stood up, lifting her gently to her feet. She didn't seem able to walk, but he just carried her.

She sighed, snuggling into his chest as he held her. For now, she was glad to just have him here.
