Title: Seeing he Knows.

Author: Rodlox.

Summary: He lives a pretense because she's happy.

Pairing: Diana/Jordan, Marco/Diana.

POV: Marco's. (kinda; is this 2nd Person?)

Note: this is my 23rd 4400 fanfic.

Spoilers: First season, both eps of 'Wake-Up Call'.

He walks part of the way with her, then lets her go on ahead once they reach the appointed spot. There's nothing for him up there, nothing he'd be interested way on ahead. Oh it's got Diana, true, but he doesn't want her with someone else, just to himself. If that's greed, he figures, then so be it: he's a selfish little git in that one respect. But he doesn't stop her, doesn't begrudge her any happiness that's blessing her days.

Back at work, everyone assumes that the two of them are an item: Marco and Diana, trying and failing to keep their relationship secret. That's deliberate, a false impression, intended to mislead, like a magician waving one hand while the other hand is performing the trick.

Truth be told, Marco may be her rock, her support and refuge...but its to Jordan that she looks for comfort and love. Marco, the man in the theory room, lord of the basement, is the hand that distracts their audience...and Jordan, returnee, 4400 leader, is the secret of the whole thing. Marco only knows because without him, the whole illusion falls apart . . . and the scrutiny that would come of her bosses learning that she's sleeping with a returnee, particularly one like Jordan with his book and his centers and everything -- Marco wouldn't let that happen, couldn't bear to have Diana living under a microscope. So he lives the pretense, the lie that's never really spoken by the three central figures, paying no heed to the rumors that linger here and there about him and her. Diana's happy with Jordan.

Marco lets none of this place distance between himself and Diana. He reasons that in time she'll have to either let the world know of her relationship with Jordan, or break things off with Jordan...and he'll be ready and waiting for her; he, Marco Pacella, the ever-vigilant, the waiting rock. One day, he tells himself, one day...

the end.
