Hey Everyone, Bayma here! This fic is my masterpiece, no joke. It's my first actual chapter fic, and it's by far my longest one at the moment I'm writing it. I love the My Hero Academia fanfics where Aizawa adopts Izuku, and I love sickfics. So, Originally I was just gonna write one of the adoption fics that I never see enough of, and then I had an urge to write a really emotional and descriptive sickfic, so...I just decided to combine them. I'm not sure how you will all like this, and that's okay. I am having honestly a ton of fun writing this, and that's really all that matters to me. I just put it up here so that other people can enjoy it, if they are like me and constantly looking for fics like this. So, Enjoy the Prologue to my masterpiece!
Izuku was four when his world fell apart for the first time. Quirkless: a single word that determined his future. It determined who would be friends with him (no one), who would associate with him (only his mother), and what he could be in the future (practically nothing, and definitely not a hero).
Izuku was eleven when his world truly shattered. Not just fell apart, but shattered into a million pieces. It was when Midoriya Inko, his mother, died. Izuku hadn't noticed that anything was wrong; sure, maybe she bad been a bit more tired, but he didn't think it was anything serious. Neither did she, apparently, since she never said anything, or did anything that seemed out of the ordinary. One day she was alive, and the next, she wasn't. She died overnight, in her sleep.
The doctors said that it was due to high levels of stress, anxiety, and exhaustion, and Izuku knew it was his fault. His mother had been stressed since she was a single mother, since his father didn't want him and left when he was little. She was anxious because of him, always afraid of what others would do to him, always worrying about him, since he was quirkless, and so fragile, in her eyes. And she was exhausted for those same reasons, and because of the extra shifts she had been pulling at work, because as Izuku grew older, he needed more. He ate more, he needed more and bigger clothes, especially when they became ripped and burned beyond repair because of the bullying at school. Not that he ever told her how bad the bullying was.
So, for eleven year old Midoriya Izuku, all he knew was that his mother was gone, and it was his fault. And that guilt never left him, since no one contradicted him.
He was put into the system after that, and went through many foster homes. Some were better than others, regarding the physical abuse, at least, but none of them were really good to him. Most tried, at first, but Izuku wasn't loveable, and so they all eventually turned him away. Whether it was because of the muttering, the stalker notebooks, his quirklessness, or just his attitude, either way, none lasted long, and eventually, there were none left.
Izuku was put in an orphanage, and not one of the nicer ones. The head woman didn't really care about her charges, she provided for them, and that was it. She never even bothered to look at them, really. As long as you left her alone, she left you alone.
The other kids at the orphanage were standard. There were the active bullies, the follower bullies, and the ones that just didn't bother to help. And that was fine, cause Izuku was used to it from school. He eventually got used to the schedule around the place, and could go days or even weeks without seeing anyone.
He was in his room most of the time, and always either the first or the last one out, to avoid the other kids. At meal times, he would go a couple hours after everyone else was gone, to sneak some of the leftovers.
He stayed in his same school, and the bullies definitely didn't let up on the bullying at all. Even Kacchan kept bullying him as much. The only thing that proved Izuku's old friend wasn't completely heartless, and didn't hate Izuku's mother, was that he never teased Izuku about his dead mother, or him being an orphan. All the other kids did, but it was the one thing that Kacchan wouldn't do.
Things went on like this for a few years, and Izuku was nearing the end of middle school, and having to decide which highschools to apply to. He could apply to whichever he wanted, the orphanage didn't care. Izuku sometimes wondered how they got away with being as lax as they were, but he never did find out.
Izuku got some part time jobs, and did occasional odd jobs around the area. It was both for the money to buy himself better food, and more clothes when his old ones got ruined, and to serve as a way to let him stay away from the orphanage more.
Anyway, one day, while walking back from school, he got attacked by sludge. That was pretty not cool, but getting saved by All Might himself definitely was. He even signed Izuku's notebook. Then Izuku just had to grab onto the hero's leg as he was jumping away, resulting in a revelation about the hero's weakness, and the dismay that came with being told he couldn't be a hero. And after that, he ran in to save Kacchan from the same sludge villain, got saved my All Might again, and then got offered All Might's quirk and being told he could be a hero.
And after that came ten long months of training. Izuku never told All Might that he was an orphan. He figured that the number one hero would decide that he didn't want his power to go to a useless orphan, and would take back his offer. So instead, whenever All Might asked, Izuku would give vague answers, and whenever All Might took him home, Izuku would always direct him to an apartment building a few blocks away from the orphanage. It was a nice enough building, not too different from his actual old apartment that he had shared with his mom. All in all, he was pretty good at tricking people, and he wasn't sure whether to be satisfied with that, or to be sad that no one cared enough to notice how alone he was, and how empty his smiles were.
When he signed up for UA, he falsified the documents. He had gotten so used to hiding that he was an orphan, that it's just what he did, he didn't even think about not doing it. He made another account in his phone and laptop, and put that down under his mother's name, forged her signature, and put in a clause in the paperwork saying that she was working a lot, and so emails would be better than calls when it was necessary. That way, Izuku could act as his own legal guardian. And the orphanage never questioned what school he got into.
He was shocked when he received a letter in the mail, with a video recorder with a video of All Might, saying that he had passed the exam. Midoriya Izuku was in the hero course at UA, and things were looking up.
...And then they went down. Kacchan was in his class, he was even in the seat right in front of him. Of course, Izuku had known that Kacchan would get in, but this was a bit of a stretch, and now Izuku was remembering that one word from Kacchan could blow his whole charade. And then, of course, came the fitness tests, where he was almost expelled. He really needed to figure out how to control his quirk. And after that first day, Izuku managed to talk to Kacchan alone. He told him about his quirk, but Kacchan didn't believe him, he still thought that Izuku had been hiding it his whole life. But then Izuku managed to tell him not to mention that he was an orphan. Kacchan just snorted, said, "Whatever, stupid nerd," and stomped away. That was one obstacle out of the way.
All the people in his class were really nice, except for Kacchan of course, and Iida and Ururaka were awesome. The teachers were nice too, and their homeroom teacher was Eraserhead! He was an interesting teacher. Well, of course they all were different, since he was so used to teachers either ignoring bullying or helping with it, but Izuku was sure that they would act less nice to him if they knew he was a quirkless orphan.
But...Mr. Aizawa seemed different. Izuku didn't know what it was about the man, but he got the feeling that Mr. Aizawa wouldn't be one to discriminate. Of course, Izuku wasn't going to test that theory by telling him anything.
Then came the USJ, which was definitely something. Of course, no one at the orphanage ever noticed or cared that he kept coming back injured. He, of course, got emails on his other account informing Midoriya Inko every time there was an incident regarding her son getting seriously injured.
After that was the sports festival, which went surprisingly well. Izuku even made a new friend: Todoroki. The other kids at the orphanage must have watched the festival, cause of course, who didn't, but they didn't confront him, surprisingly. Although, Izuku wouldn't be too surprised if they had just forgotten he existed. He hadn't seen anyone at the orphanage in a few months, and even the interactions before had been just in passing.
Izuku was settling into the school more, now that he had been there for a few weeks, but he still couldn't bring himself to trust anyone. He had grown up, especially in the past few years, not trusting anyone. His mother was the only person he had trusted, and although he did trust heros, he was still hesitant around them. He was okay with All Might, but he still didn't like being touched, and he flinched at sudden movements.
Even around his friends, he was never completely relaxed. He tried to hide how uncomfortable he was, and he tried to keep enough of a distance between them so that if they ever found out about who he really was, it wouldn't hurt so much.
After the sports festival came the internships, where he learned to control his quirk, and then the Stain incident. Then, of course, came the exams, the mall incident, and the summer camp. Then there was the incident at Kamino Ward.
And all through this, Izuku answered emails from the school to his "mother", kept up his charade, and even faked documents when needed. Of course, he had been sure all along that the principal of UA, Nezu, knew what he was doing. After all, the principal was known to have an intelligence quirk. As far as everyone knew, nothing got past him. But, he had allowed Izuku to live like this, so he didn't question it. And that became useful after the Kamino incident, when the school implicated it's dorm system.
Of course, the teachers were supposed to visit the parents of each student to receive their permission for their child to dorm at UA, and of course, Izuku couldn't do that. He panicked slightly, but managed to keep calm, and emailed the school, from his "mother's" email, saying that Midoriya Inko was out of the country on a business trip, but that she trusted the school and the heros to keep her son safe, and so granted her permission.
Izuku was sure that that would have been suspicious to the teachers, and perhaps not accepted, but it was, and he figured he had Nezu to thank for that.
So, after that, life became easier. Yes, it was harder to conceal how nervous he was around the other students, since they lived in the same building, but he had gotten more comfortable with them over all the time that had passed, and it was definitely easier than living at the orphanage. He didn't have to find convenient times to eat, or use the bathroom, or even just to enter the building. And, even though he hadn't told the orphanage about anything, they didn't seem to care, as always, and truly, he doubted they even knew he was gone. And Izuku was fine with that.
But...he also had another problem, and, surprisingly, it wasn't about keeping up his charade, or controlling his quirk, or even keeping up with his classes. No, his problem was centered around Mr. Aizawa.
Izuku had grown up without a father, and without any kind adult other than his mother. He had always thought that he had done alright without a father, but he was starting to realize how much he wanted one, and how much he thought of Mr. Aizawa as that father.
He wasn't even sure why. Maybe it was the way he felt that Mr. Aizawa wouldn't judge him, or maybe it was the way he kept protecting them, or the way Izuku felt that he truly cared, more than most other people. But either way, he had started looking up to him, looking for him when he had a problem, and searching for his approval. And even if he didn't go to him as much as he would have, had he been used to asking adults for help, the urge to was still there.
Strangely, Mr. Aizawa was even higher than All Might on his list of good adults. Izuku wasn't sure whether it was because of how much of a fan he was of All Might, and that hindered him from thinking of the hero as a person, or whether it was something else, but the Symbol of Peace just couldn't compare to Mr. Aizawa, especially when it came to being a good father. Yes, All Might was his mentor, but Mr. Aizawa was his dad. And that was a problem.
Cause...Izuku didn't want to let anyone in. He was still scared, scared of rejection, and he couldn't overcome that fear. So he thought all of these thoughts secretly, treated Mr. Aizawa the same as everyone else, and tried to ignore the warmth he felt whenever his homeroom teacher showed that he cared, whether it be in a glance, or the rare word of affection, although those were usually rather vague, or just a small gesture.
In fact, even when the underground hero called him "Problem Child", which would normally make him flinch and cower away, drowning in self doubt and self loathing for being a problem, the way Mr. Aizawa said it showed how much he cared. Izuku heard affection in the name, and even if it wasn't really there, he held on to the hope that maybe, just maybe, Mr. Aizawa cared about him as more than just a student.
So yes, most everything was going fine in Izuku's life, but of course, with his luck, that couldn't last. If he had just lasted one more day, that's all he would have needed to keep up his act. But no, everything fell apart because of the difference of him not being able to be strong for one more day.
And that's the prologue! The actual story will pick up after this, that was just explaining his past. I hope you enjoyed it, and that you will maybe want to read the rest. I currently have five more chapters written, and I will probably post one of those every weekend, until I run out. Feedback is very much appreciated, and if you have any suggestions for something you would like to see happen in this story, you can mention it, either in a review or PM, and I will see if I like it, and if it is possible to put it in somehow. No promises though! lol.
Thank you for reading!
