Hey there, and welcome to my first story in LOZ archive and well as the summary no doubt told you this is more of my version of the event's pre-calamity if anything, this story will be based on a few headcanon that I have of the events that took place before Breath of the wild happened.
I would also like to state that, as you are probably no doubt already know, I do not own Legend of Zelda (surprising, I know) and any other properties such as characters that are in the story. Still, you all probably knew that when you clicked on my story
right
now that all the fluff and greetings are out of the way, we can get started.
I hope you enjoy
The night was cold; that was all he could remember. The smell of smoke was pungent in the air, the sound of a man tired from running. 'How did this happen?' He asked, 'where are we.' in his arms was a small boy "Damn it," the man muttered as he came to a stop standing near a waterfall looking down, there was a chance he would not survive that kind of fall looking back, a creature appeared from the bushes it licked its lips as its skin shining in the night as it walked up several more creatures followed suit as the man sat the boy on the ground who would lay motionless
"Alright, you bastard," the man yelled, "let's see what you got," he screamed; he jumped around as he sliced and cut the monsters down. The one in front slammed its club down as the man again dodged his foes. And with one quick motion, he sliced through hall them sending them all to the ground. He let out a huff as he slipped back as the boy looked up, reaching out, trying to reach him. "Dad," the boy muttered.
"it's okay," the man said, "stay there." as he turned back, a creature ran up, slamming him in the gut making blood come from his mouth. looking back, he says another smaller one ran up to him carrying a sword using his own he blocked, pushing it back as more and more started coming at him
"Stay where you are-" he was cut off when as quick as lighting, a sword came and slashed his arm, clean off suppressing a scream; the man backed up as he pulled out an arrow instead of an average tip it had a large circle shape and as he sparked it, they were often called bomb arrows he smiled blood trailing out of his mouth. "Hylia, please guide us," he said as he tossed the arrow in the air, turning around as quickly as possible, grabbing the boy as he jumped; the arrow landed, creating a large explosion as they fell.
"and to think,' the man said, feeling the rush of wind on his face, 'today was supposed to be special.'
Earlier that day
"Look, mommy," a small child said with a massive grin on his face, his blond hair tied together in a ponytail as he wore a brown tunic with matching pants hos name was Link "so many pretty flowers," he said; his bright blue eyes shined as he looked over the flowers.
"I see," she said, sitting him down she was tall women with shoulder-length red hair and blue eyes that matched her sons "now what flowers do you think daddy will like," she said as the boy started to look over the flowers at the stand. "why hello, Edna," she said smiling.
The woman known as Edna standing at the stand smiled as she looked over "well, I take it, your husband coming home. Medilia," she asked.
"yes," she said, "it is going to be his first time meeting him," she said, "and as you can tell," she gestured towards Link as he eagerly looked through all the flowers, "he's extremely excited that his father is coming home."
"I'm so happy for you," Edna said "it been years since I've seen the old tard" she told her "how is he doing, anyway."
Medilia smiled "oh, you know, according to his letters, everything in the kingdom is going great" she frowned, "though."
"what wrong," Edna asked; she had known Medilia. She had seen how she got when her husband would come home "come on, Medilia, I've none you for years, and I know when something on your mind."
"he wants us to move to castle town," she said, a look of sorrow coming on her face. "I'm not sure," she said
"why not?" Edna asked. "I mean, all knights have to live there, and besides, it will be easier on both of you," she asked, "and hell, it might be an upgrade from this low-grade fishing town we have" this got a laugh out of Medilia.
"I guess," she said, "but at the same time," she looked at her son, who was still eyeing all the flowers. "I guess I don't want to leave the place I grew up in," she smiled. "I know going to castle town would be any person's dream, but I guess."
"you an old-fashioned gal and prefer the open-air," Edna laughed. "I get it," she said as she looked at Link, who was picking up a flower "so what's his name," she asked.
"Sorry, but I can't tell you yet," Medilia told her "the first person that is going to find out is his father." she told her, "so you're going to have to wait until tomorrow," she said, sticking out her tongue.
"I understand that you want his father to know his name next," she said, "but couldn't you have just sent it in a letter," Edna asked 'I'll have to give her credit. not a single soul in the village knows the child's name, though it helped that she was rarely seen around in town and spent a good part of their time in the woods nearby. "I mean, it's getting awkward having to shout boy when we see him. and this has been going on for what four years." it was weird. Still, a lot was going on in the kingdom, and the father, who she had only meet on a few occasions, was unable to come home until recently due to some dispute.
"I know, and I thank you all for being understanding, but" she placed a hand on her heart as she looked at her friend, "but I want him to hear as he looks at his son for the first time." she smiled to hear him call his sons name for the first time" she smiled "I want to see that moment with my own eyes."
"Yeah, yeah, I get it," Edna muttered "you gave me that speech last week, remember" she smiled, "but I can respect it" she smiled "reminds me when I had my first son." she laughed at the memory the boy had grown up. He went off to find his place. She wondered what he was up to, "but I want to know as soon as your able, okay."
"can-do"
"Mommy, look, look," Link called, "look at the pretty flower" he held up the flower, and Medilia smiled as she looked at the flower.
"and what flower is that," she asked.
"it's a blue nightshade." Link said, giving a toothy grin. "I remember you saying that dad gave you these a lot, and we can give him some too."
"What a wonderful idea," Medilia stated. "I'm sure he would love it," she said. "I bet when he sees it, he will have the biggest smile."
"yeah," he said, jumping up and down, "let's get lots and lots."
"how much, Edna," Medilia asked.
"that'll be 80 rupees for five," she said, "should be more than enough to give your father a warm welcome, huh."
"Yeah, let's do it, mommy."
"wow, Edna bribing my kid. Nice play," she said as she placed four red rupees.
"Hey, gotta make a living somehow," Edna said as she handed them the blue nightshade flowers "let me know when Banzetta gets back, ya hear," she winked as Edna passed the flowers. Medilia started to walk away; a cold chill ran down her spine as the wind blew over the pair. "I wonder what that was about," she asked aloud as she took her son's arm, and the pair left the cart behind them. They failed to notice the slight grin on Edna's face.
In another part of Hyrule, a man sat fully geared in the royal guard armor, his long blond hair tied into a neat ponytail. He was the husband of Medilia, Banzetta. he sighed as he finished up his plate of food. It wasn't table scraps letting out a sigh as he looked over the small camp he and four others had created. on his left was a man named Gordon in similar royal guard armor "man," he muttered, "after four years of nonstop trouble. feels good to be able to head home." he said, "can't wait to have a little taste of my mom's cooking."
"dude, we get it," another said, "you're a momma's boy."
"eh don't go for my mom's cooking mothers cooking," Gordon said "what about you, captain," he asked, "what are you looking forward to"
"eh," Banzetta smiled, "I honestly am excited to be able to see my little boy for the first time" he smiled, getting a few smirks from his comrades, "and I'll finally get to learn his name," he said
"couldn't she have sent it in a letter," someone asked? "I mean, why wait so long if you don't mind me asking."
"it alright," Banzetta told him, "she said that she wanted me to see him and hear me say his name."
"ah," someone said
"I don't get it either," Banzetta laughed as he stretched, "but no sense fretting it, come on, let's finish up and get a move on if we're lucky. We'll be home by this afternoon.
As they sat up; and started packing up, Banzetta rubbed his side. The disputes had taken their toll on his body "damn, I must be getting old."
"don't tell me all these problems have started to get to you, captain," someone asked.
"naw," he said, "just a little scratch," he smiled "besides, I could still take on you lot like this."
"oh yeah," Gordan asked.
"hell, I bet my four-year-old could take you grunts off," he said, laughing "knighthood is in our blood." while he didn't mean to sound harsh though if that were to happen, it wouldn't be too surprising as many would often be regarded as one the best knights in recent memory something that he denied constantly. If his son turned out to be a very accomplished knight, he would be sure that the boy could live up to such potential if that were the life he chooses.
"is that a challenge" they joked back as they put out the fire. "I mean, if you want the kid to become a knight, might as well get started."
"I'll think about it," he said "even then, "I haven't even met the kid yet; he might not even want to become a knight.
"that's fair," as they got on the horse and soon were off as they all told stories of their time in the kingdom.
"Hey sir," a knight asked, "you think that this peace will last," he said. "I mean, I'm glad to go fight for the kingdom and all, but every time I worry that my family will get caught in the fighting."
"don't worry about it." Banzetta told him, "if anything, all we have to worry about is monsters and the occasional sour apple" he laughed "who knows, maybe our kids will be able to look over a Hyrule united"
"Yeah, I guess," he said, "all we can do now is hope."
"that's the spirit," Banzetta said, smiling "at the end, that's all we can do."
the group walked away; however, if they had been paying, they would have noticed a small creature looking at them from behind the bushes; it licked its lips as the knights walked away before running away
Gordan looked back, a chill running down his spine as he continued on his path "even then," he thought to himself, "I can't help but feel that something is coming."
"what do you mean," Banzetta asked.
"don't know," he muttered, "call it a bad omen."
"we'll then," Banzetta muttered. "we'll just have to be on our guard then," he said.
in the woods, Medilia laid in the grass, the air in the breeze as she heard the sound of laughter; she smiled as she looked up to see a slight toothy grin "look, mommy," the voice said, "I caught a dragonfly."
"I see," she said, smiling. "and what kind of is it."
"I think it a" Link looked over the insect as it attempted to break free from the little boy's grasp "umm, I don't know."
"it's a cold, Darner," she said as she made him release his grip allowing the bug to fly away "we can use them to make elixirs that can help you stay cold."
"why would I want to be cold."
"well, sometimes it comes in handy for those who live in the desert."
"I wanna see the desert."
"who knows, maybe me and your father will take you there sometime" she smiled as the boy laid down in her lap; she rubbed her hand on his hand.
"When is dad going to get here."
"soon," she said, "in the meantime," she said as she placed him on her lap, "I'm sure he's just as excited to meet you as you are him."
"I know, but" Link looked to the side, "why did he have to stay away for so long."
"I see" Medilia frowned "you father," she smiled, wondering how to put this in words that her son would understand "your father believes in the spirit of the hero," she said
"spirit of the hero"
"yes," Medilia smiled, "it is said that in times of peril when darkness would befall the land of Hyrule, a hero would rise" she smiled "he has many names the hero of time, the hero of twilight, the hero of the skies" she smiled "and many more."
"How old is this guy."
"well, I guess the story has changed over time," Medilia told him. "it is said that the spirit of the hero is most known for his courage" she smiled a part of her remembered how often her father would tell her this. "through the many myths and legends that go around Hyrule the hero is something that the royal family holds in such high regard."
"why was he so courageous."
"Why does one need a reason," Medilia asked as she picked him up to look him in the eyes. "one does not need a reason to be kind or courageous," she smiled "in my opinion, that is what makes someone a hero" she smiled "can you promise me something," she asked "promise me that no matter what happens no matter what the world throws at you, you will do your best not to let is slow you do. she smiled "there may be times when you feel fear, but that is where courage matters the most.
"I'll try."
"good," she smiled before she could say more; she looked up to see someone running up to them. It was Edna as she came to stopped letting out a breath of fresh air "is something wrong," she asked.
"there back," she said, a smile forming on her face. "I hope your boy is ready to meet his father."
Banzetta let out a sigh of relief as he waded his way through a crowd of people, each of them welcoming him and his troop home as they offered them all sorts of food and gift baskets; of course, he tried to avoid taking them, but many of them were as they say persistent as he made his way out he noticed a familiar mop of red hair "hello Medilia" he muttered the sound of people cheering slowly starting to drown out "it's good to see you."
"yes, Banzetta," she said, "I've missed you."
"I've missed you too," he said as he walked up to her only to stop when he saw something hiding behind his wife's legs, it was Link he looked over only to notice his gaze and go back to hiding behind her "is that," he asked as Medilia nodded he bent down giving the boy a warm smile as he looked at him again.
"you're my dad."
Banzetta smiled as he nodded his head Link gave a large grin "you're my dad," he shouted as he let go and ran to hug him as he picked him up "my dad," he said with a smile more prominent than ever "I finally get to meet you" he said
"aren't you a heavy one" he laughed "what is your mother feeding you?"
"what isn't she feeding me."
this got a laugh from the pair as he held the boy close, "so he asked," looking at the boy "what's your name, boy."
"my name," he asked, "my name is-" he was cut off when the sound of horn went off, getting all their attention soon a knight burst through the crowd. "Sir, we have a problem." he said, "a horde of monster has been seen over the horizon."
"what," Banzetta asked, "how long."
"there about to charge the village" as quick as lighting, he handed his son back to Medilia as he grabbed his sword.
"quick, everyone gets into your homes," Banzetta shouted
"Dad"
"it'll be okay, sweetie. We need to get somewhere safe" as they ran, the sound of screams and explosions caught the boys' attention. Looking back, he could see weird creatures of many sizes all seemed to be going after people. He saw his father brandishing a sword cutting down several of them.
"to be courageous," his mother's words rang through him, "be careful, dad" as they ran inside, he felt his mother let out a breath.
"Are you okay, baby?" Medilia asked. Link nodded as she held him close "we need to stay here until your dad comes to find us, don't worry," she said. The sound of screams echoed from outside "everything going to okay." she stopped when the sound of a large roar sounded from the distance Link started to shake in his mom's arms
"I'm a scared mom."
"it's okay," she said, trying to calm him down "you remember what I said about courage," she said as he nodded at her "right now, I need you to be calm cause your father needs to worry about the monsters." she was unable to finish as soon the house started to collapse; she pushed them both to the ground, rubble falling over them, a large shadow cast over them it was another monster it licked its lips as it's one eye glared over them "oh no" Medilia shouted as "run now" she screamed as the monster started to press down on the rubble that she was under
"but mom"
"Please, sweetie," she said. "I need you to hide, go find Edna," she said. "I love you," she smiled, "never forget that" she then pushed him out of the way, the monster above putting its total weight on the rubble, causing it to come down and crush Medilia. a few petals of the blue nightshade flying by, thinking about how that supposed to be their gift to their father
"No!" Links screamed, which caught the monster's attention, making him freeze in fear the most looked at him, licking its lips. another monster was s behind it glared at him with red eyes before walking away the sound of its feet reminded him of a horse making him back up 'there will be a time when you feel fear, but that is when courage matters the most' his mother words ran through his mind "mom," he muttered as he got to his feet as he ran off, hearing the monster let out a roar as it chased him stumbling over "Dad" he screamed as the monster once again towered over him he word what could equivalent to loud bang as the beast fell over covering its eye he then felt himself be picked up by someone
"it's okay," the voice told him; Link looked up to see his father. "where's your mother" he pointed to where the monster was; he saw the look of terror that came across his face as he looked away as he wrapped him a blanket "we need to leave," he said "hold on" more of these monsters kept popping up forcing his father to run in another direction as he attempted to leave.
"it'll be okay," he kept saying, "stay close to me," he said as they ran; he saw what he assumed the bodies of his dad fellow knights monster started to chase people as they attempted to flee a few taller ones noticed them as it began to approach. "please son."
"Just keep breathing."
A red Zora sat at the edge of a beach. The wind was the only thing keeping her company, the sound of water splashing against the rocks. Her name was Mipha, and she was the Zora princess, and she was using this time clear her head. Her mother had recently passed away "mother," Mipha muttered out. She looked around, noticing an odd Log.
"Dad," a voice called; she looked overseeing that there was indeed someone on the log jumping in the water. She swam over to where the log was, grabbing the boy dragging him back dry land; sitting down, she looked him over. "are you alright."
"dad," the kid muttered again.
A light blue glow came from Mipha's hand as she started to heal him, and trying to make sure he didn't have any significant injury, she tried to find any inking of the boy's father
nothing
"where's my dad," he asked, looking up at her "who are you," he asked weakly, and what are you doing."
Mipha let out a small chuckle as his eye widened "my name is Mipha, and I'm healing you" she smiled "if you want while you rest here, I'll go see if I can find your father."
"you'd do that," he muttered again.
"yes, I'd" she stopped when the sound of an explosion rang through the area Mipha had a bad feeling that there were monsters where nearby and that she needed to get back to the safety of the Domain "actually," Mipha said, "We should get somewhere safe, I think monsters are nearby."
"monsters," he muttered, "they took mom," he said Mipha's heart sank, wondering what exactly had transpired that lead this boy to be in her presence, but she could understand that not only had he potentially lost his father today but his mother as well.
"don't worry," Mipha said, "I'm sure that" she looked in the distance as she picked him "everything will be okay," she said, "we just need to get back to the domain."
the sounds of muffled shouting were all Link could hear; they might as well have been speaking another language; his mind was everywhere the image of his mother being crushed, the sight of his father losing his arm it was so much that he had started to tremble he looked Mipha stood next to him often shooting him a warm smile as three others stood in the room
She seemed to be talking to another person he was short what did Mipha say they were, Zora, he had an odd-shaped head compared to the others it was flat he seemed angry right now next to him was a taller Zora he looked serious and scary Link thought to himself, but that wasn't the most prominent part was the one sitting in a type of chair he towered over all them reminding him of the monster that had taken his mother life. Still, it seemed so gentle he had said nothing the entire conversation.
"I can't believe you would bring a Hylian here," the other one said
"Muzu, please," Mipha asked, "it was all I could think off."
the Zora, known as Muzu, shook his head "how can you be sure that this isn't all some trick" he spat, glaring at the motionless boy, "that the Hylians are trying to form some play to get at us."
"I found him alone on a drifting piece of wood," Miph said. Link could tell she was starting to lose her patience. Her voice was beginning to take a tone that his mother got when he had not listened to her "he was injured, and when I healed him, he told me that" she paused "he said that he and his father had just finished running away from monsters."
"a likely story"
"who was the father," the other one asked; he had a calm look on his face as he approached the younger Zora, "did he tell you his name."
"No, Seggin, as I said he was alone," Mipha told him, her tone shifting a bit, "but" she looked at Link, who was barely conscious as it was. "I didn't have time to go searching for him, as there were monsters nearby."
"that is still no excuse to."
"enough Muzu," Seggin said, "while I agree with your fear of the Hylians if the past four years are anything to go by, that time is long behind us," he said, "besides that decision is up to King Dorephan."
"yes," Dorephan muttered as he looked at the boy, "my daughter performed a kind act. Once things calm down, we can send out guards to go and search for his father if he is alright," Muzu said nothing as he looked away Dorephan sighed. "I know, my old friend, you always have our domain at heart, but as times change, we must learn to adapt," he smiled as he looked to the boy "Seggin," he called.
"yes, your grace."
"tomorrow, we can send a search party, and we can see if we can find the boy's father, and we can get him home; he most likely comes from the Hylian fishing village nearby. so, someone, there might know who he is," Seggin nodded "until then, he will be our guest, Mipha; please take him to the infirmary and see that he is alright."
"thank you, father" Muzu let out a huff and turned away Seggin looked to the ground, clearly thinking about what he had just learned. "I will see that the boy has properly cared for" Mipha smiled. "I will do my best."
"now, what is this child's name," Dorephan asked, "you have yet to tell us."
Mipha sighed as he looked at the child who had sense looked up at the mention of his name through all the confusion; he had never even told his father his own name; it was something his mother wanted for his father to be able to be the first person other than her to learn his name so much so she kept it a closely guarded secret he sighed looking down Mipha stood in front of him "I think that should be a conversation for tomorrow, I wish to begin healing him immediately" Muzu grumbled something as turned to him giving another smile "shall we go" she whispered he nodded.
As they left, Mipha heard Muzu start to rant at Dorphan again. Though Mipha ignored him, she looked at the boy that had found.
"do you think that they can find my father," Link asked, "do you think he's okay?"
"I don't know," Mipha told him. "Besides, I think you should rest a bit" Mipha smiled at him.
"I'm sorry."
"why"
"my mom wanted my dad to learn my name first," the boy explained, "and now, I don't think he'll learn it, and now my mom is gone."
"it'll be okay," Mipha said, bending down. "I'm sure that everything will work out," she liked away "you'll see him again, I'm sure of it" she hoped that was the case the explanation she heard sounded close a part of her wondered if that was his father. If that were the case, this child would have lost everything in a matter of a few hours. She could understand, having recently lost her mother. She could understand the thought running through the poor child's head at the moment.
"Link," a voice said, cutting out her thoughts.
"I'm sorry," Mipha asked.
"My name is Link." He looked away "my mom didn't want anyone else to know, but it's only fair you know my name," he said
"well," Mipha said," I think it's a beautiful name, Link" she smiled. She then smiled at him, "I have an idea if you want. It can remain our little secret until we find your father."
"Are you sure?" he asked, his eyes widening. "I mean, it might cause more trouble for you.
"don't worry about it," Mipha said, rubbing his head
"Okay, if you're sure," Link said
Seggin had found himself in the area Mipha had told him she had found Link. He had since done an entire sweep of the room when he saw a man lying on the beach running up to him; he got a good look "Banzetta," he said in shock.
"A Zora," he muttered, "I need to find" he struggled to move. He was clearly in bad shape "my son."
Seggin was no fan of Hylians. He often shared Muzu's sentiments about them; however, few Hylians deserved his respect. and this was one of them. "calm down," he said, "your son is safe."
"he is," he said as he relaxed "okay," he smiled, "that's okay," he calmed down as he laid there motionless Seggin sighed, getting a good look at his injuries. Even if he had managed to find him and get him to lady Mipha, there no way he could survive. He bent down, " he will be safe," Seggin told him 'the king will no doubt have him looked after until he comes of age.'
"Okay," he said, "thank you," he said "thank Hylia" he let out a last breath as Seggin bent down to close his eyes. There was time he would see that he was properly buried. He motioned for one of his men to come closer. "I want you to send words to Hylian's let them know of the fate of their knight."
Seggin returned to the Domain knowing full well that he would have to tell the chill of his father's fate. He looked at Link, the sense of hope seeming to leave his eye as the man had to shake his head, "I'm sorry," Seggin told him Mipha bent down and brought him in for a hug as he heard the muffled sounds of crying there was a lot, he learned, but that could wait he looked the boy.
"I'm so sorry," Mipha whispered to him "everything going to be okay."
"so, this Hylian will be staying with us then," Muzu said, anger clear in his voice as Mipha comforted the young boy.
"if that is what his majesty orders," Seggin said, "please boy, tell me your name."
Mipha looked at the boy as a sudden realization started to come on to him he could father his own name; it was something his mother wanted for his father to be able to be the first person other than her to learn his name so much so she kept it a closely guarded secret and now he could never tell him or hear him say it.
"see, the child doesn't even know."
"Link," a voice said, cutting off Muzu before he could go on another rant about him; the entire room became silent as they looked at the boy his eyes still stained from all the crying, he looked at them the pain of losing his father still fresh on his mind and the fact that he could never tell him own his father his own name through the expression he had on his face.
"My name is Link."
Okay, so let me know what you think. I always liked the idea of Link being sent to Zora's domain due to the death of his parents, and well this is my take on how the serious of events that lead to him having to live in the Zora domain during his childhood next chapter will more or less cover his day to day life and training with a few more details
As I said in the beginning, I don't own anything, and well, it's probably for the best when it comes to Legend of Zelda lore, and as I was researching, I think I only got more confused due to all the timelines and stuff
please leave a like and review, and I'll see you in chapter 2
