Her Duty

FMA Oneshot Riza/Roy

She knew what her duty was and what they told her what her duty was. She was the military's dog, loyal and disciplined to her master no matter what the circumstance. She trained by them and lived by their laws, their absolute laws. She was bound to the chain leash they snapped to her collar, and she would dismiss it like it was nothing. She knew they were corrupt, all of them above her, plotting against the very values she cherished, but she said nothing, did nothing, like the dog she was. That was what her duty was.

He was also the military's dog, but he was no ordinary dog. He tugged on his leash, and if she didn't know better, it was broken a long time ago. It was just that nobody noticed. He too followed all of the corrupted laws, but he wasn't like her. No, he wasn't…. He wanted something out of that wretched life he was living as a dog. He wanted to make a difference… he didn't want to make the same mistake he did so long ago. He wanted to break free, and not just from their jurisdiction. He wanted to free everyone. He saw how suppressed ideals had become; he saw what lives the people around him were living. He saw the people he cared about die before his eyes. And he wouldn't stand for it. No… he wasn't like her. His duty was his to determine, and his alone.

She admired how he chose his own duty. She admired his courage, his pain, and the way he could make the wonders she desperately desired, happen. How she wanted to break free like him! She wanted to help the dying world, too. She wanted to follow no one but her own free will. She would watch him work his magic as his subordinate, and it never ceased to amaze her how he never gave up… not when it was his dream at stake. And yet, admiring wasn't action. She was scared, frightened, and had lived by the military's book too long. She was sure she had forgotten what in the world her purpose on Earth was. A mask of monotone expression could never hide that fear.

But he hadn't forgotten her purpose. He had picked her up when she had fallen, making sure she was never left behind. He had broken her chains, freed her, giving her a decision to follow the military or do whatever she wanted to. She had willpower now. She could decide. But she didn't, and he didn't push her to. Time buried the question of which side to choose until it seemed like it didn't matter. But she couldn't hide forever. And there came the time where life and death hung in the balance, and she could only choose. But by that time, she was finally ready, ready after all the memories forged among them, him and her. By that time, he had driven away all those fears, all those doubts and un-answered questions. She remembered everything. She remembered him… When she did, the decision became crystal clear between the military dogs and his reckless dream.

They had told her what her duty was and she acknowledged it. She had once lived it. But that was her duty. Now, her duty lied with him. And it always would.

A/N: Hoped you liked this insight. I know it wasn't exactly romantic but it kind of shows their relationship on a military point of view :3 Review!
