James hadn't planned on finding a golden lamp in Sirius' attic as they were cleaning out the place. He hadn't even thought it was anything of interest, just another kerosene lamp that was dusty and dirty. He rubbed it a bit to clean off some of the grime. Sirius was downstairs burning his mother and father's clothing. The lamp started to glow bright yellow and soon smoke of the same shade spiraled from the spout. James dropped the lamp as the smoke formed into the shape of a man. Finally it stopped glowing and James found himself staring at a man about his age with tousled dark hair and a confused look on his face.

"Um, hello?"

"Greetings, I am Regulus of the lamp. You have released me from my prison for that I will grant you three wishes."

"Really?" James asked, staring at him. Regulus was naked from the waist up, wearing a pair of yellow silken pants that stopped at his knees with a golden hem. His feet were also bare and James had to admit he'd never seen someone as attractive as Regulus.

"Do you trust me?"

"Of course I do!" James shouted. "How could I not? You're a hot guy who was trapped in lamp in my best friend's attic, what's not to trust?" he asked. Regulus stared at the man before him. He'd been called lots of things, but hot was not one of them.

"Okay, so, fun fact! You probably shouldn't, but I can make your wishes come true," Regulus stated, nodding his head.

"What's the catch?" James asked, trying to remember if he'd ever read anything about genies, or more accurately if Remus had ever read anything about genies and told him about it later.

"Oh the usual things, no bringing the dead back to life, no making someone fall in love, that sort of thing, oh, right, no asking for more wishes," he added, giving James a wink. James wondered if it was possible for a genie to fall in love, he was already head over heels for Regulus.

"If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love is actually all around," he said. "Can genies fall in love?" he asked.

"I don't know, I've never been in love, but then again, I've never thought about it, then again, I've been trapped inside that lamp forever," Regulus said after a moment. James nodded.

"Right, forgot about that. So I should probably start making my wishes, what do people normally wish for?"

"Money, power, a hot person to love, that one never ends well. I had one guy wish to be immortal. That doesn't work well either. I would not recommend it."

"And if I mess up, I waste one of my wishes," James muttered.

"Exactly, so how cold are your feet right now?"

"Freezing. I should head back downstairs, ask Sirius what I should do, I mean, he's my best mate. Maybe he'll have an idea?"

"Maybe? Do you want me to go back inside?"

"Nah, you can hang out here if you want. I'll come get you before I head home. Should I leave the lamp here, would that be safe?"

"No one had disturbed my slumber for over a thousand years," Regulus answered.

"Right, then I'll leave it up here, otherwise Sirius might wish for something stupid," James stated, putting the lamp down at Regulus' feet. "I'll be back soon, promise," James stated, giving Regulus a wink. Regulus had explored most of the attic waiting for James to return. He wasn't sure why he found it so hard to think, to focus on something other than James. Sure, James was his newest master, he'd summoned him from the lamp, but this was something else. He had sat down on a large steamer trunk to wait when James' head appeared from the trapdoor that led downstairs.

"Are you going to sit there all night or are you going to join me?" he asked, grabbing the lamp. Regulus jumped to his feet and followed James. On their way out, they passed James' friend, who only seemed to shake his head at seeing Regulus. The walk home wasn't very long and soon Regulus was settled on James' maroon and gold sofa.

"I've been thinking about my three wishes a lot," James stated. "But I"m starting to wonder if I'm too much of a coward, too weak to wish for what I really want," he said, still holding the lamp.

"You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you feel," Regulus said, wondering if it was the right thing to say. The longer it took James to make his wishes, the longer Regulus got to spend with him. James bit the bottom of his lip, his hair falling over his eyes. He nodded, seemingly deep in thought.

"Wait here - I've got a surprise for you," he finally announced, darting off to what Regulus figured was the kitchen. He wondered if James was going to try and make him dinner, not that Regulus needed to eat, but he liked the idea of someone serving him something, anything. There was a lot of loud noise, some thuds, James exclaiming loudly in curse words, and finally he reappeared holding Regulus' lamp.

"That's just my lamp, only a bit shinier and with a burn mark on the side?" Regulus asked, trying to figure out exactly what James had been doing.

"Well, it turns out it's a bit indestructible," James admitted, handing the lamp to Regulus.

"What were you trying to do?" he finally asked. James gave him a sheepish look and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

"Free you. I thought if I destroyed the lamp, it would free you."

"But if you free me, you won't get any wishes," Regulus pointed out. James nodded.

"I know. I was thinking about that all day and I don't want three wishes, all I want is you."

"Then wish me free. No, you won't have to take my place, I've put precautions for that," Regulus explained.

"Right, so all I do is say I wish Regulus the genie is free?" James asked.

"Yes."

"I wish Regulus the genie was free!" James yelled, holding the golden lamp in the air dramatically. Yellow and gold mist swirled around Regulus, he lifted a bit in the air and then landed back on the floor, still looking the same. The lamp, however, had cracked in half. James tossed it on the floor.

"James, you didn't have to go through all that trouble for me," Regulus whispered, tears forming in his eyes. No one had ever done anything for him before, now someone had and he had no clue what to do, how to act, or what the feeling in his chest was. He'd read about love, about falling in love, but he'd never thought it was real, that he could feel it.

"Nonsense. It was no trouble at all. You don't deserve to be confined to that lamp granting wishes for people. You deserve to find your own happiness, but on the same note, can you stay with me? I mean, you don't have to, but I'd like it if you stayed. Falling in love wasn't my plan, but here I am. I'm in love with you Regulus, I know we just met and we know nothing about each other, but it's how I feel."

"You're an idiot, but you're my idiot. I'll stay. I think I might feel the same, although I've never experienced love before, but I want to stay with you," Regulus agreed, eyeing James and wondering why humans insisted on wearing some much clothing. He knew he'd probably have to adapt to the habit, but in the mean time, maybe James could pull off that horrid yellow jumper? James seemed to notice Regulus looking at him.

"What's wrong?" James asked, looking down at his jumper.

"You're wearing far too many clothes."

"In that case, stop undressing me with your eyes and start using your teeth," James teased.

"As you wish, Master," Regulus laughed, grabbing the hem of James' jumper with his teeth and trying unsuccessfully to pull it over James' head, finally giving up and using his hands instead. He marveled at the ability to do just that, to do something without being commanded, although, he realized now, he wanted nothing more than to be commanded by James, his love and new master.
