Chapter 12
Ember Evade
Reese started to run to the armory to get ammo for his firearms in preparation for the Grimm invasion.
"How did she find us?" Weiss says as she gets more raw dust for her sword.
"Don't know. But when we get to the new safe house I'm going to look over Ruby to see if there is a bug inside of her." Reese says.
"And if there is one?" Blake asks.
"Then we remove it." Reese says as he fills up a sack.
"So remind me again why did you knock out Ruby again and stuff her inside a backpack?" Yang asks.
"If she panicked when a Grimm gets close it will give Salem a location to where she is and well I don't have enough ammunition to hold off Grimm indefinitely, and the backpack part it's easier to transport her." Reese says.
"Ember 2-1 come in over." Winter says.
"Ember here." Reese says.
On certain missions the call sign will change depending on the objectives. Hunter is used when the team is after an objective or they are doing a VIP escort. Ember is used for when a team has to evade and escape examples include if a safe house is compromised before a team can complete their objectives or if they need to run from the facility.
"The first wave of Grimm is inbound, so far the automatic defensive are holding them off but it's only a matter of time before they are overwhelmed." Winter says.
"Copy what assets are available?" Reese asks.
"Currently the airborne fighters are three minutes out and the aircraft carriers are launching every available aircraft." Winter says.
"Ember copy's all push all assets to lock on to my laser signature." Reese says as he gets the last of the gear ready.
Reese then slung the large backpack on his back the same pack also is holding Ruby inside of it.
"Enhanced strength activated." The armor says.
"So how are we going to get to the airfield?" Yang asks.
"We are going to drive there." Reese says.
The team then entered and elevator and went to the underground parking lot where there is a lot of vehicles to chose from.
"How about this one?" Yang says pointing to the armored truck.
"To obvious we need something that won't attract a lot of attention. Ahhh there is something." Reese says as he sees a normal car.
"Well that's normal enough." Yang says.
"Oh but this car is really special, tinted windows plus it's armored in the right spots, and it can go 150mph in ten seconds." Reese says.
"Whatever you say." Yang says.
"Patty unlock it." Reese says.
The car then unlocked and Reese put the backpack in the back seat where Weiss and Blake sat. Yang took shotgun.
Reese then hit it and started the somewhat long trip to the airfield.
"It's going to be a few hours before we get there but be on alert." Reese says.
When they got close to the city it looked like the Grimm have made a significant advance into atlas.
"Nuts. They are moving a lot quicker then I imagined." Reese says.
"Salem really wants Ruby back." Blake says.
"Over my dead body." Reese says.
Just then several Grimm started to block the roadway.
"Here we go." Reese says as he brought out the DEW and puts it on distroy mode.
"How is that going to work?" Weiss asks.
"Watch." Reese says.
The DEW then reached it's full charge and Reese released the shot, the energy bolt then made contact with one of the Grimm in the center of the group, then the blue ball expanded and devoured three out of the nine Grimm and it made a hole for Reese to drive through.
"Ember here, made contact with Grimm we are now compromised." Reese says.
"We Copy all. The weasel air unit is overhead they need a marker." Winter says.
"Got it, tell weasel to look for an IR beacon." Reese says as he puts something on top of the car.
"Understood. Pushing Intel to them now." Winter says.
RAWWWWWWWWOmmmmmmmm!
That was the jets screaming overhead.
All of the team except Reese ducked a little.
"Never had a jet fly over at low altitudes?" Reese asks with a grin.
"No, from what I experienced they were always miles above." Yang says as she checks her hearing.
"Weasel unit here. Is that your IR beacon on top of a red car Ember?" The squad leader asks.
"Yes, it is Weasel. Can you keep the Grimm off our backs till we get the airport?" Reese asks.
"We will do what we can Ember. Weasel out." The squad commander says.
Reese was now driving at top speed with the car trying to make sure that nothing got in his way.
But as usual things do not go as planned.
As Reese rounded another corner suddenly the ground opened up and a worm type of Grimm came out from the ground and tossed the car onto it's roof making it useless now the worm is investigating the car for a meal, it got to the driver side and was greeted by the DEW.
PEWWWWEP! BOOM!
Worms head gone.
"Everyone out we need to keep moving." Reese says as he busts out of the car.
"Winter Ember here with update." Reese says.
"Go ahead Ember." Winter says.
"Vehicle intercepted we are now proceeding on foot to the objective. Ember out." Reese says.
"Base copy's all. All units be advised Ember is on foot needs alternate transport for cargo." Winter says on all channels.
While winter was working on getting transportation for the team, Reese was helping the women get out of the car.
"Now what do we do?" Weiss asks.
Reese then picks up crescent rose and puts it in it's rifle form.
"Keep moving." Reese says.
The team then moved in between stores and apartments avoiding the main roads where the Grimm are.
But eventually engagements had to happen.
"Great Grimm blocking the road." Reese says.
"What are they doing?" Blake asks.
"They are holding positions around the city, what Salem is doing is sending Grimm into one part of the city and others will hold positions so that if Ruby gets sighted they can make an easy capture." Reese says as he gets out a small box from his pouch.
"So how are we going to get out of this?" Yang says.
"With a bang." Reese says.
Reese then points the box at the Grimm and a laser dot is on the center of the group.
"Weasel one, Ember two one request danger close fire mission target is painted." Reese says on the radio.
"Roger, we have your laser on target. Coming in TOT 12 seconds, and good night." The pilot said as he released his 500lbs ordnance.
"You might want to cover your ears, everyone." Reese says as he steadies the laser.
Everyone did as they were told and waited.
The Grimm then looked up in time to see a really large thing come right at them but it never touched the ground just then it flashed and the Grimm saw nothing.
Reese keept the laser on target for the ordnance that detonated a few feet above the ground for maximum damage.
KABOOM!
Weiss was knocked off her feet and Blake helped her up yang meanwhile was shaking her head to get her bearings.
"That was really close Reese. Can you not do that again!" Weiss says with an edge to her voice.
"I'll try not to but there won't be any guarantees." Reese says as he takes a look.
When Reese looked at the damage the ordnance caused, he was impressed. The surrounding buildings were untouched but the road where the Grimm was standing on was destroyed.
"Let's get moving, we have very little time." Reese says.
Team rwby then went on a little run trying to get to the new extraction point.
"Ember. We have reports that a large Grimm force moving your way." Winter says.
"How many?" Reese asks.
"Approx 20 Grimm. Ember." Winter says.
Reese then turns around to see Grimm 300 yards from his position.
"Team turn around and engage!" Reese says.
The team then turns around and starts firing at the Grimm.
BOOM! BOOM!BOOM!
CRUNCH!
BANG! BANG!
Weiss shot some fire balls from her sword, at the same time Blake was using enhanced rounds through gambol shroud, and Yang was getting close and punching the living daylights out of the Grimm.
"Transport now!" Reese says over the radio.
"Ember they are the next block over give them a second." Winter says.
Right on que the armored convoy came around the corner.
"DOWN! DOWN!" Reese says.
Everyone then ducked, and the guns on top of the armored trucks lit up with an awesome force.
But nobody from team rwby heard it. Until someone came up and tapped Reese on the shoulder.
"You ember?" He says.
Reese nods.
"Good we got you a one way ticket to get to the airbase for your immediate extradition." The soldier says.
"What is waiting for us?" Reese asks.
"You got two of the fastest jets with external fuel tanks. That's all I can say." The soldier says.
Everyone then loaded up and the convoy got on the move.
Reese took the turret of the truck so he can do some work while the rest of the team keep their heads down.
Reese then looked at the city and he could hear gunfire from the city and some screaming at the same time.
"This looks like hell." Reese says to himself.
"I thought the place where you rescued Ruby was hell." Patty says.
"Hell looks different for people depending on who you ask." Reese says.
"Right by the way, long range radar says there is an unknown Grimm coming up right behind you." Patty says.
Reese then rotates the turret and starts looking around.
"Where?" Reese asks.
"500 yards out, look up." Patty said.
Reese then looks and he sees it is a Grimm dragon, but this one looks smaller than the one that attacked beacon.
"Everyone Grimm behind us." Reese says as he racks a round into the heavy machine gun.
BOOM! BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!
Reese let a few rounds fly but the rounds passed right through it.
"Explosive rounds!" Reese shouted as he dumped the rest of the rounds into the monster.
Reese then does the reload in less than five seconds courtesy of his training.
Then he fires in semi auto mode so he can see what's going on.
"Reese, don't waste ammo." Patty says.
"Better have a good reason." Reese says.
"Notice it's not attacking. It's watching us." Patty says.
Then the light bulb lights up.
"Patty target the eyes." Reese says as he holds the gun steady.
"Working on it… and when ready." Patty says.
Reese then sees on his hud where he needs to aim to hit the eyes.
BOOM! Miss. BOOM! Miss. BOOM! BANG! hit. One eye down. The dragon was now trying to keep an eye on the convoy, but it knew if it looked with the other eye it would get shot. So it instead flew off and hid behind a mountain.
"We scared it off." Someone said over the radio.
Reese meanwhile was not celebrating, he keep his eyes open.
The convoy then entered a tunnel.
"We are one mile out from the airport, keep your eyes open." The commander says.
"I have a bad feeling about this." Yang says.
Reese took that line seriously and kept looking around.
As soon as they left the tunnel.
RAWWWWWRRRRRR! That was the dragon for round two.
Reese looked over to see it 200 yards and closing really quickly.
No time to swivel the gun around Reese had to use the dew.
Patty at the same time activated the adrenaline program in the armor to give him a boost.
In ⅛ of a second Reese drew and fired a single shot before it reached the convoy.
BEWWWEP! SPLAT!
The Grimm dragon lost ¾ of it's head but it still caused damage.
SMACK! CRASH!
It's back claw hit the truck where team rwby is, the truck then flipped and Reese was thrown out.
"PATTY!" Reese shouted.
"Armor lockdown engaged." Patty says.
Reese then hit the mountain side hard.
SMACK!
"AHHHH!" Reese says as his body comes to a stop.
"Armor scanning operator." The armor said.
"Come on, come on I'm fine." Reese says.
"Several fractures are detected. Administering painkillers." Armor says.
After the drugs were given the armor relaxed and Reese was able to move.
"Em keshhhh er what's keshhh on keshhh." Winter said over the radio.
"Winter ember here, don't know if you can hear me convoy got intercepted, truck carrying VIP is flipped and I got thrown out." Reese says.
"Patty, where are the trucks?" Reese says.
"They are about 100 yards away north of you. Get moving." Patty says.
Reese then found the convoy and they were getting the group into the next truck, and as usual Yang was protesting.
"I'm not going anywhere without my husband, let's go find him." Yang says.
"Lady, your husband gave us orders to keep moving even without him, he will survive." The commander says.
Reese then slid down the hill and grabbed yang by the waist and got into the truck.
The convoy then got moving and within minutes they arrived at the airfield.
Reese got his backpack and crescent rose along with his other weapons, and yang at his side.
The team then saw the aircraft they were going to take a ride in.
"Oh it's the long range recon aircraft." Reese says.
"It only fits two and I don't see the pilots." Weiss says.
"I'll fly one and Patty will fly the other."Reese says as he jumps into the first one.
Weiss and Blake didn't argue they got in and the aircraft then closed the hatch and spun up the engines, at the same time yang got into the back seat and put Ruby in her lap and strapped in.
"Ember emergency traffic, Grimm inbound, they are fast movers." Winter says.
Reese then got the jet moving; they only had a limited window before it closed.
"Weiss see the accelerator?" Reese asks.
"I think so." Weiss says.
"Hit it to the max and get ready." Reese says.
Weiss hit it and well got to experience a five g take off speed.
BOOM! RWAAAAARW!
Soon the jet was out of view, now it was Reese's turn.
Reese then hit the accelerator and started to hold on.
BOOM! WOOOOOSH!
Reese got the jet off the ground then he looked to his left and right and he saw some Grimm inbound on a collision course. And the jet was the target.
"Get ready." Reese says.
Reese hits the afterburners in an attempt to outrun them but he notices that the Grimm adjusted course.
400 yard inbound.
"Patty, do I have time to pull off that move?" Reese asks.
300 yards out.
"Possibly but you'll lose speed." Patty says.
200 yards out.
"Got to take the chance." Reese says as he grabs the throttle.
"Reese what are you going to do?" Yang asks.
100 yards out.
"Going to hit the brakes." Reese says real fast.
50 yards out.
"Reese now!" Patty says.
Reese then pulled the stick up and stopped the engines.
The jet was now vertical and still moving forward, as predicted the Grimm smacked into each other.
"Now." Patty says.
Reese then hit the accelerator and went vertical.
Now they were climbing to get to max altitude so they could catch up to Weiss and Blake.
After five minutes all Reese could see was darkness, he then looked into the back of the jet to see Yang holding Ruby real tightly.
"Hey you can look now we are in space." Reese says.
"Really?" Ruby asks.
"Yes, take a look." Reese says.
Both the sisters looked out the window and saw the planet that they live on. It was both beautiful and terrifying.
"Don't tell us that we are going to have to jump out of this?" Yang says.
"Nope we are not, we are going to land at an airport far away from atlas." Reese says.
"We have caught up to them." Patty says.
Reese then looks over and sees Weiss and Blake looking at Reese.
"We are heading to the island of Patch where it's safe, so sit back and relax." Reese says.
The whole team then sat back and relaxed for the long journey back to patch.
