Chapter 12 – You stole my heart
"Time to get some sleep," I held out my hand to help Lyra off the floor. We had been playing with her favourite toys though she is more reserved then usual. All I could do was hope what had happened on Halloween hadn't affected her too much. Doubtful of course. Lyra yawns as I carry her to the bed in the next room. I read the Tales of Beatle Bard to her as normal and just as I go to turn out the light, Lyra starts crying, "No don't turn off the light, it scary."
I pat her head and smooth her crazy blonde hair, "it's ok mummy is here, and no bad man is going to come here. Do you want to know a secret?" Lyra's eyes open wide with curiosity as she nods. "You are a Weasley so no matter where you are, your family will always find you, like Grandpa and Grandma, and Uncle Harry and Auntie Ginny, and all your cousins. Does that feel better?" I kiss her tiny hand, as she wipes the tears from her face uncoordinatedly and nods. "Good. I love you my sweet baby girl." I kiss her on the forehead and hum tunes to help her fall asleep. "I love you too mummy."
Once out in the living area, I sigh heavily. It looks like this will leave some trauma for her maybe. Looking out the front windows from the side as the curtains were closed, is one of Scorpius' habits now. He didn't turn around when I entered.
"How is she?"
"Scared understandably."
There is a long silence, as if there were a physical divide that separates us. I sit on the couch closest to me, facing the windows, resting my head in my hands.
"You seemed worried about Lyra when we arrived? You looked like you saw a ghost."
"Well any mother would be concerned about their children getting sick." I brushed the comment off.
"You have always been a terrible liar Rose, it shows on your face." He looks at me with complete seriousness. He didn't buy the act.
"Well I'm going to get some rest," it only then occurs to me that we hadn't sorted out sleeping arrangements.
"I'll take the couch if that's what your brilliant mind is taking so long to process." Scorpius chuckled and turned away trying to hide his smirk.
"Well, good," I stood, pouting as I left for the master bedroom.
I woke up in the bedroom next door to where Lyra was sleeping. I hear clanging in the kitchen and slide out of the bed, did someone break in? Brandishing the bedside wooden figurine, sneaking down the hallway, I quietly open the door to where Lyra had been sleeping. She wasn't there, another clang from the kitchen and I rushed to the kitchen. If someone had told me that a Malfoy could cook, then I think I would have passed it off as a bad joke. But there he stood covered in flour with sleeves rolled up and pouring batter into a frypan as Lyra stood on a chair from the kitchen table watching excitedly.
When he spots me, he smiles, "Morning Sleeping Beauty."
Setting down the figurine I breathe a sigh of relief, "Morning."
"Moning Mummy," Lyra had her arms outstretched.
I picked up Lyra and gave her a kiss on the head. "Morning my love." I turn to Scorpius, "so what are you making?"
He smirks, "A treat, you'll have to wait to find out. Go wait in the dinning room, it's almost ready."
He shooed us out of the kitchen, a laugh bubbled up and I couldn't hold it back. Lyra started laughing at my laughing, it felt like some negativity floated away. The 'dining room' was really just part of the living room but towards the back, where an old wooden table and chairs defined the space. Lyra rocked side to side impatiently waiting for the surprise.
"How was your sleep?" I ask in hopes it might distract her.
"Good, no monsters." She had a wide grin on her face. A surge of love filled my whole body and caught the contagious smile.
Plates of steaming hot pancakes with maple syrup drizzled generously was set in front Lyra. She squealed with excitement bouncing on the spot in her chair. "One order of pancakes for the little lady," Scorpius stated in a posh voice acting like a waiter.
"Thank you," Lyra said hurriedly as she started cutting the pancake with her plastic knife and fork. As I smile looking at her, a plate identical slides in front of me and my eyes widen. Scorpius stood close and smiled his charming smile, "It's on the house, dear lady," he does a bow and disappears into the kitchen before I could protest.
It's been a while since I indulged in a slow breakfast of pancakes. Memories of all the times when Mum used to make us pancakes in the mornings on special family weekends during the holidays. Back went I was a kid. Which wasn't technically that long ago considering that I'm twenty-one now. It feels much further back then than a few years.
"Mummy?"
I look up and see Lyra covered in syrup and almost finished her food. Her blue eyes stare questioningly. "Yes, my lovely?"
She smiles and looks more relaxed as if comforted. "I'm all sticky." Her face scrunches in distaste trying to pry her fingers apart.
"Here you go," I grabbed a wet wipe from my handbag and wiped her fingers. I kissed her little hands, "Was that a good breakfast?"
"Yes!" she beams.
I see in the corner of my eye, Scorpius peering over his shoulder at us front the kitchen with a smile while washing dishes. My heart did a funny flip-flop because he looked so happy.
