"Boys, how long do you take to make a bunch of sandwiches?" Daniel's mother placed her free hand on her hip. She honestly couldn't help but smile and her son managed to pin down Vulpix, only to be taken down by his Ninetales seconds afterwards. It seemed like the foxes were teaming up against their owner just because it would be fun. To her surprise, nothing was broken despite the trio's rough housing. She settled the plate on the coffee table, which sat nicely on a fitting rug. It sat in front of a couch and a pair of chairs that very clearly didn't match the rest of the room, but still looked nice and cushy. Sat in front of the seats, on the other side of the room, was a decently sized flat screen tv, sitting on a stand, with two shelves, with a Wii next to it. Next to the console was a small library of games for it. They were covered with dust along with the console itself and the Wii Motes that sat in a stand on the shelf above it. None of it was touched by either Vulpix or Ninetales, who were fixated on keeping Daniel pinned down. "Nine!" Ninetales triumphantly barked as Vulpx sat close by, tapping the ground much like a referee. After ten "Vulpix!" Daniel tapped the ground and was let up. "I see you're enjoying your new pets," Daniel's mother said.
"Hey, it's like two dreams coming true, I always wanted a dog, and I also wished pokemon were real," Daniel sat up. The Ninetales rubbed up against him, collecting a couple pats, and then sat down next to his trainer. Vulpix then took his turn of affection right afterwards. "I guess that's fair. I hope you know the implications of keeping those two," his mother said. "Like how they're fire breathing foxes that can kill me in seconds?" Daniel said. The boy stood up, keeping Vulpix in his arms while his mother nodded. "And on top of that, I don't think it's legal to keep a pokemon, let alone two. Since I don't know if you've known this, but it's only been about a couple days since they popped into existence," Daniel's mother picked up the TV remote and hit the power button. "But… Ninetales and Vulpix aren't overly aggressive towards anyone, because if they were then I woulda been dead the second I met Ninetales," Daniel said. "Daniel, you and I both know that isn't enough to make keeping those two legal. Chances are, there's going to be a license in a couple of years, and only certain people will be able to keep them." Daniel's mother sat down on the couch.
"For now just sit down, I made a few sandwiches for your Pokemon. We might as well keep up to date on how the world's reacting to pokemon," Daniel's mother said. Both mother and son put their attention on the TV while Ninetales settled the plate on the ground so he and Vulpix could get to the food better. "The whole world was put into shock when a flash of light brought creatures from the beloved franchise, Pokemon, into the world. Two days have passed and people are already making contact with these creatures." The News channel swapped to a clip of a Growlithe playing a german shepherd, neither of which seemed to care what the other was, they just wanted to play. "Some of these pokemon have been quite friendly, quick to come into the lives of many, and a sizable portion of those people took said pokemon in as pets." The screen changed to a man holding a Poochyena like it was a brand new puppy, to another of a person holding a Skitty. One even popped up of a woman standing next to a Zebstrika. The last was something Daniel didn't really recognize at all, but names flashed on screen for the names of said Pokemon. Lastly, another popped up of Daniel at a gas station on a security camera. It was when he had just walked out with hotdogs to feed his Pokemon. The feed played and Ninetales had just come back with the piece of cardboard.
"Why did Ninetales bring you cardboard? Of all the things you could've asked him to bring you, it had to be that?" There wasn't any audio for the video, so Daniel couldn't blame his mother for assuming this. The boy pointed at Ninetales. "He knows how to write in English, not very neatly, but he can. I knew that Ninetales were able to understand human speech, but I guess they also know how to read and write," Daniel said with a grin. "There is no damn way a fox knows how to write in english," Daniel stood up and walked out the front door. Ninetales and Vulpix almost got up to follow their trainer, but Ninetales sat down and barked something to the smaller fox. "Some Pokemon are quite dangerous," the news reporter said with a fake saddened sigh. The feed cut to a Ninetales, that was a different coloring to the one sitting in the room, growling at a farmer. "Yeah you get Outta here!" The farmer had a gun out, threatening the fox. Ninetales and Vulpix's attention was drawn back to the TV. Ninetales' ears flattened as the other fox ran off while being shot at. It miraculously dodged a bullet before running into the woods.
Daniel's mother had her mouth covered when she saw a little Vulpix that was with it, it looked significantly smaller than the Alolan Vulpix. The feed cut to an interview of said farmer. "I saw this nine tailed fox trying to get into my chicken coop. So I chased the damn thing out, a nine tailed fox is still a fox, and a fox should be shot and killed on sight," the farmer said. A clip of a pokemon Daniel's mother never heard of, a Pyroar, tackling a lion in what seemed like a zoo. Ninetales was still stuck on the earlier clip of one of his own kind being shot at. He knew that it was just a mother trying to feed her kit, sure her way of getting food was a bit misguided, but it wasn't worth getting shot at over. Vulpix on the other hand felt his heart drop, his mother would've given her life to keep him alive, and a Vulpix nearly lost its mother over some food. Both foxes started to get how lucky they were with who found them first. "None of these creatures have shown hostility to people specifically so far, with the exception of the Ninetales being threatened with a shotgun. Local police everywhere have asked everyone to stay away from these Pokemon and to run if approached. The U.S Government is debating the legality of these creatures, as they can make for excellent weapons in war, but are also incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. The door opened and Daniel sat back down on the couch. He hadn't noticed the shift in his Pokemons' moods yet.
In his hand was the notebook that Ninetales had written in, he plopped himself down next to his mom, and opened it to the first page. "Look, keep in mind that Ninetales did this with his mouth," Daniel said. The woman was handed the notebook, to her surprise, there were multiple attempts of writing very basic sentences. The punctuation was a bit off here and there and very untidy, but she could make out what was written. "Your Ninetales loves you," Daniel's mother said with a giggle. She pointed at the strung-on sentence that was written by the fox. "Who knows? I might end up marrying him!" Daniel laughed as he turned to his Pokemon. Both of them looked borderline depressed as a clip of a trail camera caught a shiny Ninetales and its kit eating berries off of a bush. Ninetales whined and Vulpix nodded. "What's up with you guys?" Daniel sat down in between both of his Pokemon and pulled them close to him, one in both arms.
"You just missed it, a farmer was just shooting at a Ninetales that was breaking into a chicken coop," Daniel's mother said. Daniel just stared at her for what felt like ages and turned to his Pokemon. "Is that the same Ninetales that was getting shot at?" Neither of them nodded. It wasn't the easiest thing to tell, shiny Pokemon weren't common, but there are millions upon billions of Pokemon in the world they once knew, there could be loads. Daniel kissed both of his Pokemon on the head. "Listen you two, as long as you're with me you're safe. I'm not letting some asshole take a shot at my Pokemon, not if there's something I can do about it," he said. Ninetales cuddled with their human as he did his best to comfort them. The fox closed his eyes and wined. He buried his head into his trainer's shoulder, a bit relieved that Daniel of all people was the person that he had found.
Vulpix on the other hand jumped out of his human's arms and backed away to the other side of the room. His little eyes were filled with terror as he stared at Daniel and his mother. "Vulpix…" Daniel wanted to get up and hold his fox. The poor thing looked terrified of him and he was cornered; a cornered animal was extremely dangerous. The larger fox currently hiding its face in his shoulder also made him slightly reluctant to get up and approach Vulpix. Daniel just stretched out his arm towards the Vulpix. "C'mere Vulpix, nobody's going to hurt you, I won't hurt you," the boy sighed as his Pokemon was still unconvinced. Ninetales backed away, he knew what was going on, and knew Vulpix needed reassurance more than he did. Daniel thanked the nine tailed fox and laid down a couple of feet in front of Vulpix. "Vulpix!" The Fox Pokemon growled and hissed at his human as a hand approached.
"Come here," Vulpix looked up from his trainer's hand and met his eyes… he didn't know what he saw, Vulpix didn't know if Daniel saw anything in his own eyes, but the boy didn't look threatening. The hand suddenly made its way to the fox's underbelly and was lifted into his trainer's arms. "Vulpix, I'm not ever going to hurt you." Daniel didn't want to say too much, he said. Vulpix sat silently crying in his trainer's arms. Would he actually be safe from harm in Daniel's arms? Would the human suddenly get angry and whip him? The clip on the TV with the Ninetales had reminded him just how dangerous humans can actually be. Vulpix looked back up at Daniel and saw a saddened smile. Like somebody had just watched their best friend have a breakdown. Vulpix buried his face in the boy's chest, being hugged tightly by Daniel, the fox felt safe.
