Riot's eyes slowly opened up, they felt like they've been closed for a century, and was immediately blinded by a lamp. He blinked a couple of times while adjusting to the light again. He moved his head around as he heard the usually faint sound of another scientist's alarm clock, it sounded crystal clear. He smelled the air and could smell many, many smells. What was with his senses? His sense of smell and hearing was a lot better than usual… maybe this is what happens when you drop the habit of drinking coffee. "Good morning!" A squeaky voice said. He looked his head up and saw the blurry shape of a Vulpix; his eyes were still adjusting.
"Did your mom teach you how to use telepathy while I was sleeping?" Riot asked. Ruby shook her head and tilted it. "I… don't think I can use telepathy yet. Is my mouth moving when I speak?" The kit asked. "I see you forgot what deal you and I had made," an unfamiliar voice met Riot's ears. "Who…?" His vision cleared up when he turned around, Casper was sitting behind him, waving her tails behind her in a specific pattern, seemingly to entertain herself. That was something else Riot would have to take a note of, pattern recognition, or… the ability to make a pattern. "Was that you…?" Riot asked.
"Yes, I am speaking without telepathy. My voice must not sound familiar, since you couldn't understand me," Casper said. "So you're capable of learning english?" Riot asked. The Ninetales shook her head and used her telekinesis to lift a hand held mirror up. "First check yourself before I let you look in this mirror. Your memory will come quickly if you just look at your… hands," Casper said. Riot sat up and tried to look at his hands, only to fall on his stomach when he tried. He sat up again, which felt weird… like his legs were an entirely different shape from there were when he went to sleep. He looked down again and saw a couple of little paws. He turned his head and saw six tails, that looked a lot like Ruby's tails, although hers were a bit puffier and his was a bit more rough looking.
"Did I… Casper, did you turn me into a Vulpix?" Riot asked. The fox nodded and turned the mirror around so the scientist could see his current body. "Before you yell at me, you agreed to do this, and you'll only be like this for a week. It could be worse, your memory could've been wiped and end up as a Vulpix forever, with no idea of your previous life," The Ninetales said. "So.. you guys can actually curse people?" Riot asked. "Of course, I said we could, and I have no reason to lie. In fact, it is in my best interest to tell the truth, because then it makes people less inclined to pull on my tails," Casper said.
"Wait… is Ruby, or was Ruby a…" Riot paused as his friend put together what he was asking. "No, Vulpix aren't just the product of curses. I could've turned you into a Ratatta if I wanted to. I simply chose Vulpix since you wanted to be one when you agreed to letting me curse you," Casper said. A camera floated over the Ninetales' head, Riot could see a blue, glowing outline on it. "Why is that camera glowing?" Riot asked.
"You said your higher ups wanted to see a Ninetales curse somebody, so I… might have stolen a camera from one of your colleagues and filmed the whole process. From you being turned into a Vulpix by yours truly, to now. The glow is simply telekinesis. You might not have seen it when you were a human, but as a Vulpix, you can, which proves that you now have telekinesis. I… don't know if that power will persist after you transform back, but if it does, then this is really just a net gain for you."
"I… well, yeah. Now I can guess that people will actively go and pull on a Ninetales' tails now, if they knew it meant they'd get telekinesis… since they'll likely ignore the possible millennium of being cursed," Riot said. "But your work will be well known once published. Anyone can recreate the experiment if you still can still use telekinesis when you turn back. They would just have to befriend a Ninetales, get cursed for a week or so, and then have the ability to nurture their new power for the rest of their life."
"But now, you are a Vulpix, and while mentally you are an adult, your body is… the equivalent to a 6 year-old human," Ninetales said. "I think, I don't know a whole lot about how human growth, but I just know you are very young. You don't need milk or a mother's milk to survive, but I still wouldn't trust you to leave a den without me," Casper laid down, keeping her focus on the two kits before her. "So do I have a brother for a week?" Ruby quickly tackled Riot as her tails wagged vigorously. "Yes you do," Casper swapped to her telepathy as started speaking.
"Riot, during your time as a Vulpix, do you mind acting as a sibling to Ruby? She… I know she wanted siblings. My mate and I were hoping to have another child before… we got seperated. So just for a week, please be like a brother to Ruby," the fox requested. "I'm down, heck when I'm my death bed, you can turn me into a Vulpix again for a thousand years," he gestured to Ruby. "So do I just wrestle with you or…" His question was answered when the other Vulpix made an attempt to pin him down.
"Now Ruby, be nice to Riot, he still has to learn how to use his current body," Casper jokingly scolded. She heard Riot yelp and whine as he tried to free himself, he was significantly smaller than Ruby; she was technically older than the Vulpix Riot had become. Despite that, it seemed like Riot was trying to rely on his brain, as he likely didn't have raw instincts like Ruby did. In a swift motion, Riot used his head to push aside the other Vulpix's forepaw, and Ruby came down. Right after, Riot placed a paw on his friend triumphantly. "I don't believe you know how playing goes," Casper said.
"What do you mean? I won!" Riot sounded like more of a small child now. Ruby very quickly swept the scientist off his paws and pinned Riot down. "I win!" Ruby cheered and then allowed the scientist to get up. "That is what I mean by playing, you're lucky Ruby decided to let you up. One moment you think you've won, then you're on the ground the next. This usually goes on for hours depending on how Vulpix are feeling," Casper said. Riot jumped when he felt something wet run against his hide. "Ruby what are you…" He paused and started to relax. "This feels nice…" he felt himself start purring. When did he know how to do that? Perhaps there was some instincts in him after all.
Honestly, it wasn't surprising that he could purr as a Vulpix. Canines had their own form of purring, but it was a bit rougher than a feline. Foxes are quite cat-like as far as behavior goes, and can actually purr. So given how Ninetales and Vulpix were basically foxes with the ability to breathe fire, various psychic powers and the ability to curse people it made sense. Still didn't stop him from wanting to write that down somewhere; he wanted make sure the world knew that Pokemon really were just a bunch of animals. Really, really smart animals in certain cases, but still animals nontheless.
"Hey Riot, we've contacted the owner of the Ninetales and Vulpix that…" the door was open as a scientist walked in. This one was quite young, he looked fresh out of school. Casper recalled this one just referring to her as "Ninetales", but he wasn't all too bad compared to the colleagues that helped Riot experiment on her. "Why are you guys in Riot's dorm? You're supposed to be in the experiment room…" He then rubbed his chin and came to a conclusion. "Did he adopt you guys?" The young scientist walked over to the desk in the room.
He dug through a pile of papers and pulled a slip out and read through if. "Yep, he was planning on adopting you once all the testing on you was said and done…" he stopped. "Why are there two of you Vulpix now? Just excluding the one that came in yesterday…" Casper stepped forward. "Did Riot not tell you what he was planning?" the Scientist jumped, like he forgot the Ninetales could communicate. "He said something about trying to understand you guys better, I dunno how he would since it seems like he already knows what's going on with you all."
"Well, I was told that Riot's higher ups would've liked to see if I can curse anyone," Casper grabbed the camera with her mouth. "So I cursed him," she placed a paw on Riot's head. "This is Riot by the way," she added. Riot waved his paw, barked, gestured towards the table and growled. "He said that you shouldn't be nosy with his desk or paperwork," Casper translated. The young scientist nodded. "I can tell, honestly I figured I might as well have if I didn't think Riot was here. He likes you and that Vulpix a lot, like it's almost like you two are his dogs…"wait, did Riot want to be a Vulpix?"
Riot nodded his little head and wagged his tails."Now he'll get a vague idea of how Fire Types usually produce fire, potentially find the key to psychic powers, and I get to take care of another kit. It's a win-win since Riot will be like this for a week," Casper said. Her tails wagged, Riot had taken care of her and her kit ever since the two of them woke up in that observation room. It was now her turn to return the favor, even if it was only for a week. "By chance, are were-pokemon possible?" The scientist took a notpad out. "As in… a human during the day but they become a Pokemon, or Pokemon-human hybrid, at night?" The scientist specified.
"I believe there are curses like that, but I believe that is out of my skill range. Are you going to tell the other scientists about Riot's little situation?" Casper asked. "They know already, they knew when somebody, who likes Riot a lot, went into the experiment chamber with the new specimen. She said I was told to keep these two company' and what not. So they guessed Riot got cursed during the tail experiment he was supposed to do." Riot pointed at the scientist and barked a couple times. "He says you're in charge. I assume if the owner, who's the trainer of the Vulpix and Ninetales from yesterday, would like to visit, then he should be allowed to," Casper said.

Ninetales and Vulpix stared at the new lady. "Hey c'mon guys, I already introduced myself. I'm not gonna punch you or anything," the lady said. Ninetales wrote something in the notebook and tossed it at his new caretaker. "That isn't a nice way of handing me that. I get that you and your kit hate the current situation, but please drop the attitude," she scoled. "Does this lady think you are a child. I get why I would be scolded since I'm barely even two, but you're probably older than she is," Vulpix said. "Well Vulpix, Lee is right, I am being a bit bratty. But she should know I don't want to see her, I want to see Daniel. Not some bitch that is only here out of obligation," Ninetales said.
Lee sat down and sighed. "can you please give me a chance? I just want to be your friend," she sounded genuinely hurt by how Ninetales and Vulpix wouldn't even come near her. Vulpix hid himself in Ninetales' curled tails as the fox laid down. The fox brought the journal over to him and wrote something in it. It read:
"You may come over and pet us, but don't expect us to be friendly or cuddly. You aren't our human."
Lee sat closer to them, but couldn't get to Vulpix under the enormous amount of fluff that covered him. She did however pet Ninetales a couple times and leaned into the animal's hide. The notebook flipped open and a pen started writing in it on its own. "I said you aren't my human. I don't, and won't cuddle with anyone that isn't him," it read. Lee sighed and opted to simply sit by and pet the sleeping fox.
