I took a step out of mine and Dan's apartment, packed to the brim with a heavy coat and snow pants. The sun was completely blocked out by a massive sheet of clouds, any light that managed to breach said clouds, were then blocked out by snow. Needless to say, it was like that Polar Vortex that came crashing down on the Midwest a couple of years ago. And it was completely cold. That work was completely off the table because of how bad this storm was; I still had to get my mail though, so here I was making my way through the snow, because somebody thought having every mailbox for every resident set in front of the office was a good idea.
A loud thump landed beside me and I began to grin a little. An orange dragon with a white under belly just landed beside me, an old companion if you will, just plopped itself down beside me; it was a Charizard. "So girl, are you going to chase me down the highway again? This time in the snow?" I yelled, it was snowing so hard that I couldn't hear my own voice. The dragon rolled its eyes and came closer to me, shielding me from the snow with its wings. Now, Gamefreak has been sucking this Pokemon dry for all money it's worth(which is very cool. I'm waiting for Charizard to get a fifth Mega Evolution) I couldn't help but grin at the gesture.
You see, even with all my layers, I was still kinda cold, so having a fire breathing reptile was a nice gesture. Even if I hadn't exactly "adopted" Charizard, she did seem to stick around, and if I had room in the apartment, I'd let her stay. We do get a storage garage as a part of our little deal when renting out our apartment(it was right across the parking lot from it too!) That we could keep her in. Since we basically don't own a bunch of stuff. All I'd have to do is buy a big mattress(likely a queen size one) and put in a form to adopt Charizard.
"Finally!" I cheered as we finally reached the mail boxes. I quickly pull a key out and unlock my mailbox to find nothing. Well, at least I know that mail doesn't get delivered when it's snowing this hard and it's this cold. "I did that for nothing," I say as Charizard snorted. She then picked me up in her arms, which felt kind of uncomfortable but comforting, and immediately began to fly. With another thump, we were sitting outside my apartment. So I had a thought; Daniel was out camping, so surely he can't get mad about me bringing Charizard in if he's not home!
"Say bud, wanna stay in my apartment? I'm willing to bet that you're a bit chilly right now. Plus I owe you for keeping me warm on my dangerous, long trek to the mailbox," I say after opening the door. Charizard tilted her head for a bit, with an expression similar to that of a curious puppy, and shivered a little bit. Just because she was a fire type, didn't mean she was entirely immune to the cold. She then nodded and followed me inside, not before making sure her paws weren't covered in snow, and she waddled into the apartment.
Charizard really wasn't much taller than the average man, and she was, well, a female, so she was probably a bit shorter than the average Charizard in terms of height. In other words, she could easily fit and move around our apartment. And to my surprise, her tail doesn't seem to catch anything on fire, which must have to do with her wanting to burn something to the ground or not.
Charizard then laid down on the ground, swinging her tail around and up to her face, and let out a sigh. I sat down beside her side, almost tempted to just lay down into it. "Say bud, did you ever make up your mind on me adopting you yet? You're pretty friendly and very clearly live around here, if you knew when I stepped out of my door. Hell, you know where I work and have flown me there whenever you see me in uniform. So we could be really good friends, but I can't legally keep a Fire Type without registering that you exist, and that you're my Pokemon," I asked, while gently scratching the base of her neck.
To this, Charizard began to purr, fucking purr. Who knew that a dangerous dragon could make such a cute sound? She did also have that look of a puppy… so maybe they acted like dragons from that one movie about… training dragons? I don't know, I haven't seen that movie in a solid ten years, so I don't exactly remember the name very well. Charizard then had a thoughtful look one her face, before doing the charizard equivalent of a shrug, and began to lean into the palm of my hand as I kept on scratching.
I think I just found my Pokemon; a fire breathing dragon that wasn't a dragon type. Well, it looks like I'll be pampering Charizard for the next few days; and I didn't even mind doing so.

I opened my eyes to find myself lying in a corner of the cave, with my son, Chili, curled up into my side. It was odd to see a Ninetales cuddling with another when neither were mates, but this was a special occasion. I had been reunited with my son, albeit he is now enslaved to a human, which I do hope to change by the time we leave this cave. As for the Kantonian Ninetales in the other corner of the cave, trainer wrapped up in his tails, he could make due for a good mate once he sees how much better his life is without having to look after a human.
While yes, I will admit that my son's trainer is not too bad, he is still keeping two Ninetales captive. So I might not harm Daniel unless I have to do so. After all, I did willingly leave myself in his lap, until I was moved into this corner in my sleep. "So, what are you thinking about?" My eyes snapped up to the Kantonian Ninetales, Sol, wide awake. It was kind of funny, seeing such a proud Pokemon happily acting as a bed for his trainer. "Well, I was hoping if I could get you and my son to leave," I got cut off by Sol's glare.
"You want me to leave my human behind once all of this is over? I've been separated from Daniel before, your son has as well. And let me tell you, we do not want to go through that again. I know Daniel wouldn't either. All I want is to simply spend as much time as possible with my trainer, as I know just how short his lifespan is compared to mine. So please, do not attempt to convince me to leave Daniel behind, and please do not try and make Chili do the same. My trainer says he wants to come out to this area once a year, so just stick around and you can see your son at least once a year."
Before I could respond, his trainer got up and stretched his arms with a big yawn. A couple of grunts and stretches later, Daniel's hand fell onto Sol's cheek, almost on instinct. "Hey buddy, did you get any sleep?" Sol nodded and barked a couple of times. "I hope you slept well," Daniel sighed and looked at the ground. "Why did I have to leave that journal back at camp?" He said with a defeated look on his face. "While it certainly wasn't as good as telepathy, we could at least talk to each other, in a sense, and I could know what you're saying," the young man took a deep breath and a small smile formed on his face; Ninetales had just closed his eyes and started humming in content as his head was resting in his trainer's palms.
There really was not a whole lot to do while being bunkered down and waiting for a snow storm to pass. Especially considering that I did not feel the desire to seek out interacting with the human in my temporary den. A weight that had been lying on my stomach, Chili's head, was now absent; the Ninetales had gotten up. And his first course of action was to trot over to his trainer. A fire built in my chest as I watched my son happily melt away in Daniel's arms, who seemed to struggle with giving both of his Pokemon attention, and also nip at Sol. He wanted to play.
"My son, I can play with you if you'd like." I was hoping that my son would listen to my request, while I did not directly say it, I did want to play with him. It has been far too long since I've gotten the opportunity to play with my pup. Chili got up and happily ran over to me, tongue hanging out the side of his mouth(much like a young Vulpix. He is still technically a pup even if he's evolved) and we began to wrestle.

I simply sat and watched as Chili bounded over to the wild Ninetales, much like a puppy would, and started playing with her. It was… for lack of a better word, adorable. After he had evolved, he simply didn't bound over like that very often, only if he was very, very excited about something. Perhaps he did love this Ninetales in a certain way that I couldn't pin down. Suddenly, a pile of snow floated into the cave, and I looked down to see Sol staring at the snow in deep concentration.
The Ninetales' tails were fanned out behind him, despite him lying down, which told me he was doing this. Slowly, but surely, the snow began to shape into words, one at a time. The first was "wild" the second word gave away who Sol was talking about. "Ninetales". Then after a few more words, the snow melted away, but I now knew what was going on, and Sol had just thought of a way to communicate with me despite his lack of anything to write on; he was smart as hell.
"So that wild Ninetales is Chili's mother?" Sol nodded before I pulled him into a hug. "I swear, you're smarter than I am. I'd never think to use snow to communicate," I said with a small smile on my face. With that, Sol simply melted into the hug, while I slowly lifted my eyes onto Chili, who had just pinned his mother onto the ground. "Say Chili's Mom, can you come over here when you and Chili had your fill of playtime?" I asked. Both Ninetales nodded, and both gained composure despite the puppy-like joy I could see in their eyes; they clearly missed each other.
Was I doing the right thing by keeping Chili? I'm sure my Ninetales does love me, but I know he isn't that old for a Ninetales, and he also loves his mother just as much. Maybe Chili only felt obligated to like me because Sol did, and because I kept him well fed. I mean, how do you almost immediately begin to love and get along with the same guy that nearly ran you over with his car? Hell, I only ended up keeping him because Sol gave me puppy eyes when we first met Chili as a Vulpix.
Chili was the first to greet me, tails wagging furiously, when he came up and licked my cheek. Sol realized what was happening, and had managed to slip out of my arms. Chili's mother sat before me. I could tell that she was a little agitated about me interrupting precious time with her son, but still seemed willing to give me the time of day. "Alright so, I guess I'll first start off with giving you a name, since I don't want to constantly be calling you Ninetales," I said while bringing my hand up to my chin in thought.
(quick A/N: thank you Kurama the Platinum Zoroark for the name)
"I'll call you Aurora for now," I said with a small smile on my face, before a frown replaced its place. "Alright Chili, I know this will seem like it came out of nowhere… but do you want to leave me and be with your mother?" I asked. Chili looked shocked for a second, before whimpering. "Because I don't think I really… earned your friendship? Hell, I almost killed you when we first met, and only ended up keeping you because Sol begged for it!" I said, keeping my eyes off my friend. "If you wanna go with your mother, I'll let you go with her."
My gaze then landed on Aurora, who looked nearly as shocked as her son did. "And if he does end up going with you, can you take extra good care of him? Tell him you love him, simply be a mother to him?" This earnt a nod and bark from the female Ninetales.

I had zoned out after I heard the question from Daniel. Then it almost broke my heart when I heard the reasoning. Does he think that I don't truly love him? Sure, he did almost run me over, but he didn't, which was the important part. Yes, Sol begged him to let me stay with him, but Daniel ended up warming up to me anyways(and loving me very dearly). So why was he questioning if I reciprocate the feeling or not? Yes, I do love my mother, but the time for us to eventually separate would have come at some point anyways. And I simply couldn't leave Daniel again; I just loved him.
Love really doesn't need an actual reason to exist, and my reason for loving Daniel doesn't exist. I simply love him, and if he didn't feed me, then I wouldn't mind since I could hunt. If he was just happy to be my friend(without petting me once, like a monster) then I wouldn't mind either, since I just love him. Well, there is no better way to show your love than this…
I walked up, right into Daniel's face, and began to smother him with licks. My tails had a mind of their own while I did my best to show my trainer that I wanted to stay with him. "Chili! C'mon! I can't wash that off for at least another four days!" He complained, but his tone told me to keep going.
He loved me just as much as I loved him.
alright so, i did kind of cheekily throw in a How to Train Your Dragon reference I just thought it'd be funny if dragon-like Pokemon acted like the dragons in those movies: like big old cat/dog/lizard things. also, one more, thank you Kurama for the name. I would've been stumped on the name for a good hour or so if it weren't for that.
