Chapter 3 Part 1
"Sir, what should we do with her?" Riza Hawkeye questioned Roy.
Al had taken the girl on a walk while Roy discussed the situation with Hawkeye. He understood that if he should release her, she could cause the same reaction to everyone in town if she should choose. But he couldn't keep her as a prisoner either. She was only a child and the charges wouldn't have been fair. Ai couldn't join the military either, for her blindness could cause a weak spot in the military. Her powers could help but if someone had a gun or was able to use alchemy, she would be useless. Mustang had also thought of sending her with the Elrics, but then there was Ed…
"Sir, may I suggest that we ask her and see if her will is suitable?" Riza suggested.
That was a good idea. He could alter it to be suitable and favorable to both her and the safety of society.
"Yes, I suppose that is the best option we have. Now about the issue of where she would stay while I decide…" Roy mentioned, eyeing the First Lieutenant. After a moment, Riza seemed to realize what he meant. The child couldn't stay in a room by herself, and she was actually the only who could watch over her and was a woman.
"Yes, sir!" Riza agreed, narrowing her eyes and saluting.
Mustang dismissed her afterwards and stared at a picture of Hughes. Maybe this was the best thing to happen…
The girl walked sullenly with her doll-like hands in Al's big gloved ones. As Al noticed, she barely talked, but he knew she was listening. What had caused her to be so silent? Or was she mute as well?
"Ai, do you like flowers?" Al asked. The silence between them was uncomfortable. Maybe a conversation would brighten things up better than sunflowers.
Her head looked up and the glazed silver eyes seemed to look through his soul. It brought a chill to his soul for he had no back to put the chill on. If it was possible, those eyes were scarier than death itself. It seemed to hold wisdom beyond her life. Was it because she has seen so many memories? But then again, he didn't know how many minds she racked.
"Do you know what flowers are, Ai?" Al questioned. What if she was blind all her life? She probably couldn't tell the difference between molten lava and flowers!
A shake of the head and he wasn't surprised.
"Here, I'll show you!" Al volunteered and led her to a patch of red roses. They were a blood red and bits of black held at the center. Small thorns poked from the stems and the leaves had little ridges on them. Al guided Ai's hands to the petals and she felt the soft petals.
"Those are petals. They're the part of a flower that's delicate." Al explained.
It was the strangest thing Ai had ever felt. Al said it was a flower petal. The petals were soft ad felt fragile, but then it was sort of tough. Her tiny fingers ran farther down until there was a prick in her hand.
"Ai, don't touch the thorns! Oh no, you're bleeding!" Al shouted in a panicking voice.
But Ai ignored him and started pointing to the flower. Was it really called a flower or was there more to it?
"Huh? You want to know what it's called? It's a rose. They come in all different colors." Al explained.
"Roses…"
Chapter 3 Part 2
Ai sat quietly on the bed. Someone, a woman, had taken her to a room where there was soft material and hard material everywhere. There was even a tall smooth stand that she ran into. The woman called herself Riza Hawkeye. Yes, and Ai was called Ai. A furry animal sat next to Ai with its warm head nuzzled at her side. A thumping noise motioned that the tail sticking out of its rear end was wagging joyously. Riza mentioned his name. She said it was Black-Hayate. It behaved quite nicely.
"Are you going to change? I could give you a shirt and we could take you shopping for clothes tomorrow." Riza said. The extra shirt that the horse gave her wasn't very comfy and kept sliding from her shoulders. Ai nodded and pulled on a shirt that Riza threw at her.
"You'll be staying with me until we find what to do with you. So I guess we'll have to get to know each other until then." Riza informed and walked to somewhere.
The silence in the room was frightening and had a chill. It seemed as if the world had fallen. The only thing that reassured Ai that the world still existed was Black-Hayate's thumping tail.
Guilt resided in Ai's heart, for it knew that what she had done to Edward caused worry to everyone. Now that she thought back, confusion did resonate from him when she invaded into territory. Maybe what she did was out of her place, but she was somehow drawn to him. Something about Edward made her want to look into his past and realize who he is; to be able to feel the sorrow that fell on her skin. The same feeling was felt for Alphonse as well, but not as strong. What was it about them that made her feel so close?
As time passed, the thoughts about Edward seemed to grow bigger. For the first time, Ai started thinking about what meaning her life was to everyone. There seemed to be a mystery behind it, for her childhood and past seemed nothing more than a dream. But as she tried remembering it, it seemed all a lie. In the end, her past was a blur. Nothing was brought out from it, not even the simplest of details. As she pondered and wondered, dreams seemed to overtake her. Reality was nothing more, and she fell into a temporary death.
