A/N: Tripp just doesn't get enough love on this site, and life needs more Franks!

Since Speed died, there have been a lot of cards arriving at the lab. All the usual clichés, lined up on the front desk. "Deepest Sympathies" is a favourite sentiment, but it's such an empty one too. People can't be sympathetic unless they've experienced that same loss.

That's why this card's my favourite. It's not a particularly big or fancy one, but it holds so much more meaning.

It's from Frank Tripp. I can still remember opening it, steeling myself for yet more of the syrupy messages that adorn sympathy cards. I won't deny that what I got instead was a shock.

On it was scrawled,

Only the good die young.

Frank.

Strangely, it made perfect sense to me. He was saying that Speed was a good cop, even if he didn't clean his gun enough (Calleigh can't really expect me to believe it was low-grade ammunition that killed him). He was saying that Speed wouldn't want to grow old and be remembered that way. This way, he'll always be exactly as he was, young and free.

I sigh as I put the card back down. Yes, Frank may not always be the most eloquent of men, but he always knows what to say when the chips are down and it really matters.

That's why I need him.
