A/N: This brief drabble owes itself to a question which popped inside my head shortly after watching the movie. It goes like this: When Evey kissed V, even though there wasn't any physical contact, did V still hold his breath?
And this being my first V for Vendetta drabble I would greatly appreciate any constructive criticism based on the content. I've had less than a weeks worth of immersion in the movie and comicverse so I'm not certain how accurate this is.
Disclaimer: There is little that I own, V for Vendetta does not fall into this category. Damn.
Humans need to be touched; they need to be held and to be loved. It is one of the most basic instincts we have, like a child reaching out to his mother. Daily he denies himself this fact.
He clothes himself in black and the cool darkness of shadows, the white of his mask is sterile and cold to the touch, the rosiness of the cheeks do nothing to belie this truth.
Born by fire, it is strange that now he denies himself warmth, that he keeps himself contained, every inch neatly hidden and in place. He cannot be seen, he cannot be touched. These are his limitations. They are not laws, they are not rules; these do nothing to hinder his actions. His restraints, his desire, his need to remain self-contained rules him, hinders him, tortures him.
But all that is lost now when she leans in toward him.
For half a moment her lips hover over his own, so close and yet separated by miles. She kisses him. An act so intimate and yet so disconnected. What sweet torture is this that he should feel her breath upon his lips but not his mouth upon her own?
But this is the fate he chose as his own. To remain distant, untouched. Never could he allow himself the sensation of her kiss.
And yet, despite this, he had held his breath.
