This was actually for a project in Bio... yeah.. odd.. strange.. and exceedingly OOC
Iruka is quoted from my boyfriend's explanation on how ATP is made.. cuz he's in AP bio and I know nothing XD
"Nee, Iruka-sensei, how come I have so much more energy than Sasuke-teme or Sakura-chan?"
"Naruto, you're such an idiot."
Iruka and Kakashi were currently sitting with the members of team 7 (Sakura, Sasuke, and Naruto) attempting to explain to Naruto about energy. So far… it wasn't going too well.
"Naruto, be patient. You have to know about energy before you can get into the whys."
"But Iruka-sensei, I don't care about how it's made."
"Too bad. Shut up and listen dobe."
"ATP is what gives you energy."
"What's ATP?"
"Adenosine triphosphate"
"huh?"
"It's what gives you energy."
"Oh…"
"ATP production in animals… first is the process of glycosis. In glycosis, which occurs in the cytoplasm, 2ATP is invested to start a reaction in which a molecule of glucose is broken down into 2 Pyruvic Acids, 2 NDAH, and a net gain of 2 ATP. Pyruvic acid can't be used in its current form so carbon dioxide is stripped from it to make it an acetyl group. This acetyl group is shuttled by coenzyme A into the intermembrane and matrix of the mitochondria, where it combines with oxyalectic acid to form citric acid. Then the Krebs cycle begins where this citric acid is made into succinic acid and then into malic acid and recycled back into oxyalectic acid. Two turns of the cycle are needed to make one molecule of glucose- it will result in the creation of 2 ATP, 6 NDAH, and 2 FADH. Next is the electron transport chain or chemiosymatic coupling. This occurs in the intermembrane of the mitochondria- the electrons (NDAH) are pumped from the matrix into the external medium. Since the external membrane is highly concentrated with ions, they will want to go back into the matrix of the mitochondria. The only way they can do this is through these channels on the inner membrane- the protons will pass through these channels and pass through ATP synthetase in the process which turns ADP into ATP. This results in a net gain of 36 ATP."
"That's what we use for energy, right?"
"Yes Sakura, that's right."
"Umm... Iruka-sensei?"
"Yes Naruto?"
"Could you… say that again?"
"Hnn, dobe. It's too late."
"He's right," Iruka looked up at the sky "It's already sunset."
"Well," Kakashi interrupted "I hope you three learned a lot today."
"I still didn't get my question answered…"
"Night Naruto."
"Yeah…"
Naruto stayed up the rest of the night with a headache trying to figure out exactly what Iruka-sensei had been trying to tell them, and slept through the mission the next day.
