"Yeah."
"Going to jail?"
"Yup."

Riley's POV
Yes.
That small three-lettered reply had stuck with Riley all day.
He thought about it the remainder of his drive home, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were sore. As he prepared his lunch, banging and slamming things around his kitchen. As he blasted the volume through his headphones to drown out the noise, ignoring the pain as he powered through an intense workout. As he continued to ignore the additional texts Cindy had sent him by way of an explanation.
I had no choice.
They figured it out.
They saw your car. They knew you snuck out. There was nothing else I could've said but the truth.
Riley rolled his eyes, continuing to delete all of her threads.
Because fuck… THAT.
There was no way in hell the word "yes" should've come out of her mouth. So what if they saw his car? So what if they knew he snuck out? And so what if they guessed right? Until Cindy said it out loud, it was just a theory. An accusation. All she had to do was deny, deny, deny.
"Yes" my black ass.
Riley was pissed. Not just at Cindy, but also at Jazmine and Caesar. Hell, he was mad at Huey's bitch-ass too. None of them knew how to mind their damn business. They were forever talking about Riley and Cindy; getting ideas, making slick comments, and harassing them about being a couple for years.
And now they're never going to let it go.
BANG
"Aye, take it easy, Reez. You've been clanging around way too much down there." He heard his boss, Tito, say. Riley was more than glad he had previously picked up an extra shift at the garage that night. He'd been driving himself crazy in his house earlier. He was thankful he had something to focus his energy on and at least attempt to take his mind off other things. Not that is was working too well.
"My bad. I got it though." Riley replied, sliding himself out from under the truck.
"Good." Tito nodded, turning back to the car tire he was removing. "What's got you in a funk tonight?"
"Women problems." He muttered, rolling his eyes at his turned back.
"Yeah?" Tito chuckled. "Sounds like fun."
"Yeah right… I don't get them."
"Who does, man?"
"Common sense things though… fuckin' common sense shit they act like they don't understand. Like is it really that hard?" Riley vented as he started to work on another section of the car.
"You gotta remember esé," Tito chuckled again. "Women don't know how to think like men. So what may be common sense for you might not necessarily be common sense for her. Agreed?"
"It should be if we already had a damn conversation about it though… right? Like bitch, how you gonna forget what we already promised? God forbid if I forgot shit though." Riley rolled his eyes, getting more and more irritated.
Alright so… he did tell Tish. But it's not like he forgot it just… happened.
Whatever. The deal was not to tell any of their immediate friends in the crew. So… it's not like Riley completely fucked up… right?
"Listen Reez. I don't know your business. I'm not tryin' to know your business. All I do know is that women are women. You forgive her and move on or you break ties and move on. Either way, bitchin' to me about it on the job sure ain't gonna fix things any faster for anyone… especially not me." Tito smirked, turning to glance at him.
"Whateva, nigga." Riley smirked back. "Hatin' ass."
Tito shrugged. "If you wanna stay later and talk about it, that's up to you. But you know you're technically already off the clock."
Riley quickly glanced down at his watch. It was already 8 PM. If he stayed until midnight he could make some good overtime. And then after maybe…. He thought back to Cindy's last unanswered text.
Clearly you're pissed and STILL aren't talking to me. I think you still work tonight so if you want to come over after to talk, we can. I think we should. I'll see you when I see you I guess…
Yeah… maybe they should.
"I think I'll stay for a while, T." Riley agreed. He momentarily thought about texting Cindy that he was coming over, but quickly decided against it.
For one, why should he?
And two… petty or not, he was still mad. And still didn't want to talk to her at the moment.
Hopefully that initial reaction would subside by the time he decided to go over.
Later That Night; 12:14 AM
"So now what?" Tito asked him curiously, inhaling and exhaling a smoke of his cigar.
"Talkin' to her unfortunately." Riley grumbled before taking a drag of his. He was the last one to close up the shop as usual and had spent the last several minutes venting more to Tito. He hadn't gone into detail, only summarized the story into bits and pieces.
"If I were you, I would." Tito shrugged. "In the grand scheme of things, is it really that bad? So she told a few people about your situation. So what? Does it really change things that much?"
"You don't know these people." Riley rolled his eyes. "They nosey as fuck."
"That's people in general, Reez. I know for a fact that you're nosey. I know I can be nosey. That's just how people are wired. And people love gossip."
"I just don't want people up in my business. Especially these niggas."
"Then keep yourself at a distance. Or talk to them about it too."
"Shit, I barely wanna talk to her. The very last people I wanna talk to is them. Fuck that." Riley blew out a puff of smoke angrily.
Tito watched him for a moment with interest. "It's Cindy, ain't it?"
"Huh?" Riley turned to him.
"The girl you're messin' around with. It's Cindy right?"
"Nigga, how you figure?" Riley asked guardedly. He'd been careful not to drop her name. Tito had met Cindy multiple times during her visits down to the car shop.
Tito shrugged again. "Just a feeling. Sweet girl."
"Sweet nothin'." Riley snorted.
"You playin' with fire, man." He shook his head.
Riley gave him a look. "The hell you talkin' about?"
Tito gave him a look right back. "That's your best friend."
Riley waited for him to continue, expecting him to say more, but he didn't. He stated it like it was an explanation all in itself.
"Yeah… she is… was… I don't fuckin' know."
"Oh please." Tito sucked his teeth with an eyeroll. "This shit is not going to destroy your relationship unless you let it. And if I were you, I wouldn't. That's just stupid."
Riley sighed with a nod, finishing up his cigar. "Right. I'm gonna head out now." He rose from the couch and left the remains in the ash tray. "Thanks for the smoke." He said, extending his hand out for their handshake. Tito made no move to stand from his chair, eyeing him carefully as he clasped his hand.
"Reez… be smart. Don't fuck it up." He told him seriously.
Riley grimaced with an eyeroll, but nodded. "I gotchu. Later."
"Have a good night."
We'll see. Riley thought, walking out of the garage and heading to his car.
Less than 15 minutes later, he was walking inside to Cindy's apartment complex. He realized during the elevator ride up that he still hadn't thought of anything to say to her. Shit, he still didn't feel completely ready to say anything to her. He didn't even know if she'd still be awake. And if she was awake, how was this gonna go? Her mood could be just as bad as his.
Which means it could turn into a complete shit-show real quick.
Sooner than expected, Riley found himself in front of her door. He reached for the door handle and slowly tried it.
It opened right away.
Riley suppressed the urge to get angrier at the fact that she'd left her door unlocked again, and stepped through. He saw her right away.
"You came." She spoke quietly, looking up at him. She was seated at the opposite side of the room at her dining room table. In front of her was a half bottle of Crown Royal. She had a glass tumbler currently in her hand on the way to her lips with an empty tumbler still on the table.
She'd been expecting him.
Riley closed the door and walked over steadily, watching her the whole time as he crossed the living room. Cindy was already pouring whiskey into the extra glass for him. Her hair was wet and wavy down her back, clearly from a late shower. She was dressed in only a pink baby tee that showed a strip of her waistline and snug gray sweatpants. As usual, her face was free of makeup and she wasn't trying at all. But damn if she still didn't look good.
Instead of sitting completely opposite from her, Riley chose to sit diagonal in close proximity to her. Cindy handed him the glass as she raised hers.
"Cheers." Her voice was slightly raspy as she clinked hers to his gently. Riley watched as she took a small sip.
"To what are we cheering to?" He asked while swirling his glass. He waited patiently as Cindy swallowed, making a disgusted face after she did. Then she looked at him and shrugged a blithe shoulder.
"To lasting as long as we did."
Riley slowly nodded, finally shrugging as well. "What the hell." He muttered before taking a swig.
Cindy grinned faintly. "It was a good run."
Riley pulled the glass down from his lips and set it on the table, looking at her. "Does that mean it's over?"
Cindy stared at him, seeming surprised. "Why wouldn't it be? They found out."
"And like I said before, fuck them." Riley shot back instantly. "Who cares?"
"You do. And so do I." Cindy retorted, just as quick. "I don't want them judging us."
"Well sweetheart, they wouldn't be judgin' us if you hadn't told them the truth." Riley snapped harshly, feeling his anger rise.
"Reezy," Cindy spoke steadily, an edge to her tone now coming out. "Don't go there." She warned, casting him a stony look. Riley ignored it, reaching for his glass again to take another sip. When he put it down again, he spoke slightly calmer.
"What all do they know?"
Cindy blinked at him before looking down, swirling her glass. "I told Jazmine mostly everything. She told Caesar, but agreed to spare some of the details. I'm assuming by now they told Huey about it too."
"Dammit." Riley muttered.
"There was nothing else I could do, Reez." Cindy spoke again quietly.
"Other than lie?"
"I was backed into a corner!"
"So you should've lied harder."
"Get off my case about that!" Cindy barked. "They're not morons!"
"That's an opinion." Riley scoffed.
"Get over it." She told him sharply. "It was bound to come out sooner or later."
"Sooner now, thanks to you." He scoffed again, taking another gulp. Cindy simply stared at the side of his head.
"Are you seriously gonna keep doin' that? Just keep throwing me under the bus like this is single-handedly my fault?" She demanded, her voice rising. Riley stayed silent, only eyeing her in return. Cindy shook her head at him, pushing herself back from the table. "You're unbelievable."
"Girl, if you don't stop-" Riley stood from the table and grabbed her wrist, but she snatched it back immediately.
"No, don't!" She pulled away, but then got in his face. "I'm not gonna do this with you all night. I don't have to! But you better stop acting like this was all my responsibility. I did my part and did what I could. You're either gonna accept that or you're not. But you're not gonna keep throwin' it in my face like a little self-entitled, punk-ass, son of a-"
"Alright C, damn!" Riley cut her off, holding up his hands in surrender as she kept poking him in the chest. "I'll chill if you do!"
"You first!" She retorted, giving him a final light shove. Then she crossed her arms.
"You good?" Riley asked, studying her. He rolled his eyes as she countered him with a sassy look in return. "Whateva, just sit down. Damn." He sighed, sitting down first before she followed.
"Watch it Reez." Cindy mumbled, pouring more whiskey into her glass.
"Hit me too." He extended his empty tumbler as well. After she poured their drinks, they sat in empty silence for moment. Riley was the first to crack it.
"So now what?"
Cindy's response was to noisily slurp a sip before answering. "You got me."
Riley glanced at her, pausing the glass at his lips. "You really want it to be over?" He asked lowly before tilting it back. Cindy eyed him in return before averting her eyes and setting her glass down.
"I don't know, Reezy." She answered quietly. "Do you?" She asked in return, nervously twirling a section of her hair.
"Does it look like I wanna be done?" He countered, his voice unintentionally husky.
Cindy rolled her eyes in response, still not really looking at him. "How would I know if you do or don't, Riley?" She spoke, irritation in her voice as she started to fiddle with her hair. "You come in here, you're all pissed off, you're taking your anger out on me when all I've tried to do was…."
By that point, Riley was tuning out everything she was saying as he watched her. She was currently gathering her hair to pull it up into a high ponytail. Damn she smelled good. Whatever hair product she was using, it smelled all fruity and sexy on her. Riley watched a few water droplets run down the back of her neck and down beneath the collar of her shirt. He studied the profile of her body, his eyes skimming leisurely over the voluptuousness of her breasts, the tight flatness of her stomach, and the appealing curve of her large and very defined-
"Reezy!"
"Huh?" Riley blurted, snapping his eyes up to her fierce ones.
"Are you listening to me?" She demanded, glaring at him.
"Every word." He lied simply.
Cindy narrowed her eyes at him. "Oh really? Then what did I just say?"
Riley slowly and dramatically rolled his eyes. Then he smirked at her, nonchalantly scooting himself in his chair a little closer to her side of the table. "You're askin' me what you said?"
"Yeah. Since you're listening so well, tell me." She told him with attitude.
"Hmm…." Riley took that moment to reach over and grab underneath the bottom of Cindy's chair. Then he easily pulled her around to his side of the table, turning to face her and block her legs in with his own. She stared at him in slight surprise and crossed her arms, now to be suddenly so close in his vicinity. Riley took the opportunity to smirk more as he placed his hands on either side of the chair, leaning towards her face.
"You were askin' me if I still wanted to fuck you." He spoke calmly, taking pleasure in the way her cheeks immediately pinkened. "That's what you said right?" He asked innocently.
"…Not word for word." She replied with quiet indignance.
Riley supplied a dry chuckle. "But I got the basis." He watched Cindy nod silently. "So?"
"So what?"
"So ask me again." Riley told her.
Cindy let out a small sigh, averting her eyes. "Reezy…."
"Just ask." He said again simply.
She finally made eye contact with him after a moment and took the bait. She cleared her throat before speaking.
"Do you still want to do this?" She asked quietly.
"Do what?" Riley played dumb.
She glared at him lightly. "Our arrangement."
"The arrangement to what?" He asked again, sliding a hand on her hip and underneath the hem of her shirt. Cindy stared at him in silence, a blush on her face as Riley's hand went around and creeped up the back of her shirt, stopping at her bra clasp. He inched a little closer as he gripped it in place.
"The arrangement to what?" He repeated pointedly, easily unhooking the clasp.
"Fuck." Cindy whispered, her eyes locked on his. Riley licked his lips, feeling his arousal at her answer.
"Yeah." He spoke lowly. "I still wanna fuck you."
"I still wanna fuck you." She admitted, surprising him with her honesty.
"Oh yeah?" He asked, raising a brow as he leaned back in his chair.
"Yeah." She boldly moved herself forward to slide onto his lap, now straddling him and slinking her arms around his neck. Riley couldn't keep the smirk off his face as he held onto her hips tightly.
"So what, baby?" He asked her huskily, noting the lustful look in her eyes. He knew he was probably mirroring the same expression.
"So let's fuck." She whispered again, leaning down and pressing her lips to his. Riley kissed her back deeply, tasting the liquor on her tongue and loving it. She grinded against him gently at first, but then increased her pressure deliberately as they kissed, driving him crazy. Riley moved his lips to her neck, giving her a hard bite to let out some of his pent-up aggression. Cindy stifled a moan, pulling herself even closer against him. His lips inched up to her ear.
"Quit playin' with me." He demanded, licking her lobe.
"Play with me then." She replied back in a tease, kissing his cheek. Riley chuckled deeply, reaching down to pinch her behind, then pulled back to get her attention.
"Not just yet." He ignored her slight pout, but took pride in it. "You sure you down with still doin' this? Now that they know?"
Cindy shifted in his lap a bit and looked at him seriously. "I think I am." She nodded.
"You think?"
"I mean I want to. Obviously I still do." She blushed. "It's just gonna be… different."
"It don't have to be." Riley shook his head. "Like I said before: fuck 'em. Yeah, I was pissed when I got here and I'm sorry that all my attitude was with you, but I'm more pissed at them. This is their fault for not mindin' their damn business." Riley was getting heated again just thinking about it.
"It's still gonna be different, Reez. We hang out with them all the time. It's probably gonna be awkward. Which is what I don't want."
"All I know is that they better keep that bullshit to the side, for real. I ain't havin' it." Riley spoke angrily. He was so serious. He wanted them to try him. "I'm not gonna fuckin' deal with slick shit from Caesar or Huey's bitch-ass. Hell, Jazmine's either! They better not even start with me."
"Oh-kay Reez, damn!" Cindy giggled. "I hear you."
"I mean it, yo. I ain't about to be dealin' with their shit all day."
"I hear you, Reez." She gently turned his face to look at her. "It'll be fine."
He nodded after a moment as he looked at her. "So we good?"
"I think so." She smiled, leaning down to softly peck his lips. "Wanna head to bed now?" She kissed him again, teasingly this time. Riley grinned lightly and squeezed her thigh.
"As much as I'd like that, I think I'm gonna take a raincheck and go home." He told her gently, kissing her neck before shifting his body to start to stand up.
"Why?" Cindy asked after she stood from his lap, her eyebrows knitted in confusion.
"For one thing, I'm exhausted. I just wanna sleep in my own bed tonight, babe." He said after he stood, now rubbing his eye.
"Why else?"
Riley grinned, grabbing the empty glasses and bottle of whiskey while he spoke. "Tomorrow's Monday. I'm off for once but I know you gotta be at the gym early for work, right?"
"Yeah." Cindy sighed, following him to the kitchen. "And I agreed to coach an extra practice at the high school tomorrow evening too."
"That too." Riley shrugged as he placed the glasses in the sink. Cindy took the bottle from him and placed it in her cabinet.
"Any other reasons?" She asked casually, leaning her hip against the counter while crossing her arms.
Riley turned to her and took a half-step closer, a smirk now hinting at his lips. "You want the main reason?" He asked, prompting her to nod. He smirked more. "I probably seem a lot calmer now, and granted I have chilled out a little, but I'm not gonna lie. I'm still pissed." He shrugged haphazardly.
"Not at you," He corrected at her taken aback expression. "But just the situation. How it happened, how it came out, and just from thinkin' about all their typical shit they pull and all the shit they're gonna try to pull now."
"Okay…." Cindy said, confused. "What does that have to do about you staying though?"
Riley took another half-step forward, now sliding an arm around her and pulling her against him. He stroked her body and sides lightly as he spoke to her quietly. "Like I said, I'm pissed. Charged up." He began casually, holding her gaze. Then he leaned over to her left ear, kissing it before speaking.
"I don't wanna break you." He smirked, his voice barely above a sexy whisper as he cupped her ass.
Riley had expected her blush when he pulled back, which of course was present. But he had not expected the mischievous deviance her expression now presented.
"I'd love to see you try." Cindy grinned cheekily, subtly eyeing him up and down.
"Oh yeah?" Riley humored her with a grin of his own.
"Yeah," She shrugged, before her grin turned into smirk. "But I doubt that you could."
"Is that a challenge, babe?" Riley now rotated her so that she was pinned against the counter.
"Only if you make it one." She eluded sexily, propping her leg up against his hip. Riley inhaled a slow and deep breath, leaning in until he almost brushed against her lips.
"Nice… try." He whispered, his eyes on hers. He noticed the familiar glint of naughtiness in her eyes right before she licked out her tongue, softly sweeping it over his bottom lip.
"Your… loss." She replied with a wink.
Riley licked his own lips as he gripped onto her thigh tightly, fighting for control. Damn her.
"It is getting late, Reezy." She interrupted his thoughts as she started to pull her leg down from his side. "I should probably head to bed." She shrugged, gently pushing him backwards to step around him. "I'll walk you to the door though." She tossed over her shoulder.
Riley shifted his jaw, mentally cursing as he followed behind her. When they reached the door, Cindy opened it with a deliberate flourish and held it open for him.
"Have a wonderful night, Reezy." She smiled a perfect smile, clearly teasing him.
Riley pressed himself against her, pinning her once again to the door as he gripped her waist. He watched her try to suppress the excited expression creeping onto her face as he brought his hand to the back of her neck gently. Then he brought his lips close to hers, watching her tilt her face up to kiss him. But before she could, he lightly brushed his tongue over her lips before pulling his face back out of reach completely.
"You too, C." He smirked, letting go of her body and coolly walking out the door.
He didn't look back as he headed down the hallway to the elevator. He grinned after several moments when he finally heard the door close, definitely a little harder than necessary.
Oh well. Two can play that game.
Jazmine's POV
"So… you heard from Cindy lately?" Caesar asked while flipping through channels.
"Not in the past few days. I'm trying to give her some space." Jazmine answered with a sigh, applying more edge control gel to a section of his hair.
Caesar currently sat on the floor in front of her while Jazmine worked at restyling and freshening up his dreadlocks in Granddad's living room. Huey sat on the couch next to her reading one of his new books.
"I don't think space is what she needs, yo." Caesar shook his head. "She needs to socialize and actually talk to her friends."
"No, I think she just needs her space." Huey spoke up quietly, not taking his eyes away from his book.
"Huey…." Jazmine warned, giving him a side-eye. "I don't know. I just don't want her to isolate herself from us."
"That's what I'm sayin'. You think we made her mad?" Caesar asked.
"We certainly didn't make her happy." She replied with a frown. It was now Wednesday and had been over three days since she heard from Cindy after the confrontation.
"You think we made Riley mad?" He asked instead.
"Probably." Huey spoke again, turning the page of his book.
"It really ain't that big a deal though. I don't know why they tried to hide it like that."
"Come on, Ceez. If it were you, would you have openly told us that you were sleeping with one of us?" Jazmine asked him.
"I mean, I wouldn't have announced it."
"Exactly. They didn't want to announce it either. And after all the crap we give them about being a couple, they probably were embarrassed. And they probably didn't want to give us something else to talk about." Jazmine said, now feeling bad.
"We were just playin' around."
"I know Ceez… but we need to lay off them. Seriously." She told him determinedly.
"It ain't like we're that bad, Jazz."
"Caesar…." Jazmine warned him, giving him a steady pulling tug at one of his dreads.
"Ow-ow-oww, okay!" He winced, before she let him go.
"We do play too much. And we've gotta stop."
"I gotchu." He nodded, reaching back to rub where she tugged, but Jazmine popped his hand with her comb. "OW!"
"Hands down."
Caesar crossed his arms and grumbled under his breath while Huey let out a light snort. Caesar glared at him from the corner of his eye. "Ain't nothin' funny, nigga."
"That's contrary." He smirked in reply.
"Man, whatever." Caesar rolled his eyes. "You heard from Reez?"
"He hasn't been by the house, so no."
"That's not like him. Especially when there's food in the house." Jazmine commented sadly.
"He'll get over it."
"Huey, I don't want him to just 'get over it.'" Jazmine gave him a look. "We need to try and fix this."
"…We?"
"Jazzy's right." Caesar cut in before Jazmine could respond. "We should at least reach out."
"Just to extend an olive branch." Jazmine nodded.
"And what do you two plan to do?" Huey raised a brow, stressing that he was not part of the "we."
Jazmine glared at him before looking down at Caesar. "Any ideas?"
He thought for a few moments before snapping his fingers. "Oh!"
"What?"
"Hold on," He said, pulling out his phone. "I'm pretty sure tomorrow is under-21 night at Ivory."
"That high-class club downtown?" Jazmine asked, slightly wrinkling her nose.
"It's not that high-class. Just posh." Caesar shrugged. "Found it. And yup, it is. We can invite them both to that tomorrow since Riley would be able to get in too."
"We're gonna need an invite just to get in, Ceez. I heard that club always has VIP and a waitlist."
"Relax Jazzy, I know someone who can get us in." He glanced back at her with a grin.
"You really think they'll be able to manage a pass for all five of us?"
"For me she will." He smirked with a wink, turning his head back around. "I'll ask her now."
"Do what you have to do, player." She chuckled. "Let me know if she can manage that."
"I will. But maybe we should call Cindy now just to see if she'd be interested?"
"Yeah… maybe you're right." Jazmine bit her lip, adding a clip to hold a section of his hair.
"Let's do it now." Caesar said, turning around.
Jazmine pulled out her phone and searched her number. "Speakerphone?" She asked, earning a nod from Caesar. She turned to Huey as the phone rang. "Not a word."
"I'm not even here." Huey rolled his eyes, still focused on his book.
It rang for a few moments before Cindy finally answered, sounding almost guarded. "Hello?"
"Hey Cin!" Jazmine greeted cheerfully.
"Hey Jazz, what's up?"
"Nothing too much. Right now I've got you on speaker with Caesar too."
"Hey boo." Caesar called out.
"Sup Ceez." Cindy replied, sounding even more reserved than usual.
"Well… first we wanted to apologize, Cindy." Jazmine spoke cautiously. "About before."
"Yeah girl." Caesar added. "We weren't tryna get on your case or nothin'. And we weren't tryna be all in your business either. But as you're already aware, I am a lil bit of a nosey nigga."
"Very nosey." Jazmine grinned. "And me too, Cindy. We realize that we probably didn't handle things the right way-"
"They didn't." Huey chimed in quietly. "Ow!"
"We didn't." Caesar spoke next, grinning after Jazmine had swatted at Huey hard. "And we wanted to say we're sorry."
"We really are, Cindy." Jazmine added sincerely.
"…Thanks, guys." She finally responded after a beat. "But you already apologized before. I'd already let it go."
"We know, but it still felt unresolved. And we don't want it to be awkward among us." Jazmine explained. "Whatever's going on between you and Riley, that's your personal business. We're not going to bring it up and we're not going to joke and tease about it anymore. Right, Caesar?"
"Right."
"We just want things to be normal and for you both to feel comfortable, you know?"
"I appreciate that, guys. Thanks." Cindy said again, starting to sound a little easier.
"No problem, gorgeous." Caesar grinned. "And to jump back into the normalcy, how bout we start it off right with a club night?"
"When, Saturday?"
"Naw boo, tomorrow night. You down?"
"Really, Ceez? Tomorrow though?" Cindy deadpanned. "That's on a Thursday. I work during the day."
"And you'll be off during the night." Caesar countered easily. "C'mon. Thursday is the only night that they let people 18 and over in, so Reez can come too."
"Where at?"
"Ivory."
Cindy sucked her teeth. "Nigga, that ritzy-ass, high-end, skinny-bitches-only joint?"
"I'm just talkin' bout Ivory the club." Caesar snickered.
"Boy, I know exactly where you mean. And how in the hell you think our motley crew gonna waltz up in there?"
"First off, I'm offended. And second, I gotchu covered, girl. Already got the hookup."
"Your friend came through?" Jazmine asked him in surprise.
"She'll be there tomorrow night to let us roll through that VIP line." He smirked.
"Nice!"
"I do what I do." He shrugged with the pop of his collar.
"Alright boy," Cindy spoke up again. "You sure whoever your contact is they'll be able to get us in? I don't wanna get ready and look cute to be standin' outside lookin' dumb."
"Babe, I got this. Don't worry about it." Caesar brushed her off. "You gonna ask Reez to come or nah?"
She seemed to hesitate for a moment. "I guess I could. I don't know if he has work or not though."
"Just try, Cin." Jazmine urged. "It'll be fun! Definitely needed."
"I guess."
"It is! And we swear, it's gonna be good on our end. No looks, no comments, nothing. We're done with that. And we're so sorry again for making you uncomfortable."
"Oh-kay Jazzy, damn!" Cindy chuckled. "I get it, thank you."
"You're welcome." Jazmine beamed.
"That goes double for me, girl." Caesar added.
"As it should." Jazmine giggled.
"What about McHater?" Cindy asked, prompting both Jazmine and Caesar to turn to him. Huey looked up from his book and blinked.
"No comment." He said before his eyes fell onto his page again. "Ow!"
"I'll keep him in line." Jazmine stuck her tongue out at Huey, ignoring his scowl.
"'Go best friend, that's my best friend.'" Cindy mimicked the Vine, causing Jazmine to laugh.
"Ummmm, hello?"
"Boy bye." Cindy dismissed Caesar with a snicker. "I'mma get off here and call Reezy real quick. I'll text y'all later."
"Okay! We'll see you tomorrow night!" Jazmine said excitedly.
"Sounds good, Jazz. I'll talk to you later. Bye Ceez, Bye Hater." Cindy told them.
"Bye Cindy!" Caesar and Jazmine were the only ones to respond before Jazmine disconnected the call.
"That went well." Caesar told her with a grin.
"I'm glad that it did." She said, relieved.
"I didn't expect it to go otherwise." Huey spoke, placing a bookmark over his page before closing his book and standing from the couch. "But I hope you all have fun tomorrow." He said simply before heading for the kitchen.
"Oh don't worry, honey." Jazmine grinned, giving him a look. "We'll all have fun tomorrow."
Cindy's POV
"This had better work, Ceez." Cindy muttered to him as they inched ahead through the velvet-roped line, bypassing the other people lining the sidewalk.
"What she said." Huey glared over at him.
"I'm sure that it will… right, Caesar?" Jazmine asked cautiously.
"I told y'all, I got this." He said confidently.
Cindy sighed, feeling anxious as they steadily were approaching the front of the line. This was their first time ever attending Ivory because it was such a luxury club. She had no idea what to expect and really had no idea at all on what to wear. After consulting with Jazmine, Cindy had finally decided to wear a burgundy off-the-shoulder bodycon dress with nude pumps. Jazmine had gone with her navy backless and long-sleeved dress with a slit up the calf paired with silver peep-toe heels. Jazmine had managed to convince Huey to wear a gray men's jacket over a plain white shirt with gray jeans and all white sneakers. Caesar had worn a black jacket with a red V-neck underneath, dark jeans, with red and black Jordans.
"Are you sure Riley's still comin' out?" Caesar asked Cindy as they were now next in line.
"He said that he was." She answered with a shrug, silently hoping her guess was right after their conversation last night.
"They wanna go WHERE?" Riley asked over the phone.
"Ivory. That club downtown." Cindy replied, cradling the phone between her ear and shoulder as she painted her nails.
Riley sucked his teeth. "You mean that bougie-ass, snobber-fuck, wannabe-fancy-"
"Yes, that one." Cindy cut off his tirade with the roll of her eyes. "Caesar said he can get us all in."
"I'll believe that shit when I see it. Tryin'-ass nigga." He scoffed. "You seriously gonna go?"
"Why not? None of us have been there before and I heard it's always lit."
"Do you really wanna go with them though?"
"They said they'd lay off us, Reez. And I believe them."
"Hm." Was all he grunted in response.
"What boy?" Cindy sighed.
"I don't trust 'em."
"You've gotta let it go. I know you still mad-"
"Why ain't you?" He demanded.
"I was, but I'm not gonna hold onto it forever. It's over and in the past!"
"Whateva, C. You and I both know them niggas ain't never gonna change. I ain't dealin' with their shit."
"Come on, Riley. Are you gonna come or not?" She asked exasperatedly. It was silent for a bit before he answered.
"Sure." He said, sounding extremely sarcastic.
"Reezy."
"I gotta go. I'll holla later." He said before hanging up, leaving Cindy sit there with her mouth open.
"I'm sure he'll be here soon." Jazmine said hopefully, smiling at her. Cindy nodded back slightly.
I hope.
"Next!" The large bodyguard with a clipboard in his hand barked, prompting them to approach. "Names?"
"Should be under 'Caesar' with a plus four invite." Caesar told him with a friendly smile.
The bodyguard looked up from his clipboard at him stonily. "Caesar who?"
"Oh uh, it might be under 'Michael Caesar' I guess. Maybe?" He tried again, now looking nervous.
The man skimmed the list again and looked back up, scanning their group. "Where's the fourth invite?"
"He should be here a little later." Cindy spoke up. The bodyguard briefly glanced over her head to toe before glancing at Jazmine as well.
"Ladies, please proceed to the other two guards so they can check your IDs." He told them simply.
"Thank you." Jazmine smiled, walking beside Cindy to go around him.
"Mm-hm." He responded before turning to the boys. Then he glanced down. "Are you both aware Ivory has a dress code?" His tone was suddenly brusque again.
"Ummm yes?" Caesar tried.
"Nikes and Jordans don't usually fly here."
"Oh you know what…." Huey spoke, his tone tense.
"Oh crap." Jazmine muttered, glancing back worriedly at her boyfriend.
"Uh, this is actually our first time at Ivory," Caesar quickly tried to do damage control. "You know how that is, man. My very close and personal friend who works here, Lindsay, is actually the one that gave us the invite. And we're all so pumped to be able to come out tonight and enjoy ourselves, y'know? Make some memories, meet some people, toss back a few, knaa'mean?" He rambled nervously.
The bodyguard blinked at him before looking down again. "Are you wearing jeans?"
"Ummmm… what had happened was… Huey?" Caesar turned to him for backup. Huey only glared at him, slowly shaking his head. The bodyguard rolled his eyes as he watched them, raising a walkie-talkie to his mouth.
"Lindsay, I need you out front." He said into it, waving Huey and Caesar to the side so he could let the guests behind them in.
"Dammit Caesar." Cindy grumbled, waiting off to the side next to Jazmine. Not too much longer later, a brunette in a plain black mini-dress came out, heading straight over to the guys.
"Hey Brick." She smiled, speaking to the bodyguard. "What's wrong?"
"Is this clown with you?" He asked, nodding over to Caesar who seemed to look relieved.
"Don't be rude." Lindsay giggled, patting his back. "Come with me, boys." She gestured them to follow her. Caesar nodded his head as he passed by the bodyguard.
"Thanks and have a good evening, Brick." He grinned.
"Don't talk to me."
"Got it." Caesar shut up with another nod, stepping to walk with Lindsay.
"Glad to see you could make it." She told him.
"Glad to have you savin' my ass." He grinned, then turned to Cindy and Jazmine as they approached them. "Thanks for waitin' on us."
"We didn't really have much of a choice." Cindy smirked.
Lindsay smiled at them as well before waving off the other two bodyguards that stood at the door for IDs. They moved out of the way for Lindsay to pass through, the others following behind her.
"And since this is your first time, I'll let you bypass the cover charge." Lindsay told them, now speaking louder over the increasing volume of the music.
"Thank you." They all said earnestly, knowing that the fee was extremely steep.
She grinned as they came to a tall set of glass double doors, waiting for two more bodyguards to open it for them. "Welcome to Ivory."
Cindy's mouth about fell open when they walked inside. And she knew hers wasn't the only one that did. Ivory was huge and very posh, just as advertised. They had entered onto a high rise, overlooking the expanse of the club below them, illuminated by the purple and white lighting of the room. The section directly beneath them was massive with many large leather booth couches, already filled with people socializing and having drinks brought to them by the waitresses. Cindy counted six bars of the bat that lined the wall of the area. The section further off to the right was larger that housed the crowded dance floor.
"Enjoy yourselves, everyone. Either staircase will get you to the main floor." She gestured to both of the grand and wrap-around stairs. Before she could walk away, Caesar lightly grabbed her hand.
"Am I gonna get a dance with you tonight?" He asked her over the music.
"Maybe if you're lucky." She smirked back before slipping out of his grip and sauntering off.
"Damn." He said, his eyes following her.
"Worry about finding her later, playboy." Cindy grinned with an eyeroll, tugging his elbow. "Let's go."
The four headed down the stairs to the main lounge area to first find a couch. Fortunately, they had managed to get lucky and snag one that had just freed up. After looking through the cocktail menu that was left in the booth (each of their eyes doubling in size at the prices), Cindy offered to buy them a bottle of Grey Goose to share. Within a few minutes, they had a waitress come to their booth, take the order, and return shortly with a tray holding the bottle, a jar of ice, several glasses, and a small bowl of limes.
"To a good-ass night!" Caesar toasted once they had all poured their drinks.
"I'll drink to that." Cindy clinked his glass and the others before taking a large sip.
"Damn, that's smooth." Caesar said, swirling his glass.
"I'm surprised how good that tastes." Jazmine nodded with a smile. Huey glanced at her.
"Pace yourself."
"Live your life, Jazzy." Caesar basically said the opposite, grinning when Huey shot him a look. Caesar ignored him, digging into his pocket. "Oh nice, Reezy just texted me. He's outside."
"Oh no, how's he gonna get past that bodyguard?" Jazmine asked him.
"I'll call Lindsay and have her meet me out in the lobby. Be right back." He told them as he stood from the booth, phone already up to his ear.
"Good luck." Huey scoffed, referring to Brick.
"That nigga don't scare me." Caesar brushed off, starting to walk away.
"Right."
Jazmine chuckled at them before turning to Cindy. "I'm happy he came."
"Me too." Cindy managed a smile, but still doubted slightly. Jazmine must've sensed it because she bumped her shoulder with hers.
"I promise, we're not even gonna go there." She told her quietly near her ear.
Cindy nodded in response with a grin. "Thanks." She said before taking a sip of her drink.
It seemed like a while that Caesar had been gone. Jazmine and Cindy had even discussed sending Huey after him, but right around the time Huey was even considering it, they finally saw Caesar heading back to the table. But he was alone, and seemed to be pissed from the expression on his face.
"Ceez, where's Riley?" Cindy asked, after he sat down next to Huey again.
"He's comin'." He replied bitingly, anger definitely laced throughout his tone.
"What's wrong?" Jazmine asked him seriously, picking up on it as well.
Caesar looked up at her, his face rigid. "He's already drunk off his ass."
"What?" Huey growled.
"Yeah. That's why it took so long." Caesar told him. "By the time Lindsay and I got out there, he had already done his part to piss Brick off completely. I'm pretty sure he was about to have security escort him off the property or call the police. Then, even after Lindsay had managed to talk him out of it and let him come inside, he continued to make an ass out of himself and be obnoxious as fuck! And he embarrassed the hell out of me in front of Lindsay, talkin' all types of bullshit. I wanna dropkick that nigga Brooklyn-style." He seethed with a scowl on his face.
"Ceez, calm down." Cindy told him gently. "Where is he now?"
"He had to 'take a shit.'" He deadpanned with air-quotes. "That's what he said. In front of Brick and Lindsay."
"There he is." Huey glowered, spotting him walking down the staircase. He had on a black leather jacket over a white muscle tank, blue jeans, and Timbs paired with all of his platinum chains and his Esco snapback that he wore backwards. He spotted them once he got to the main floor and unsteadily made his way over, plopping down next to Cindy on the couch.
"Whaddup niggaaass?" He greeted with a nod, lifting Cindy's glass from the small table to his lips.
"Riley." Huey's voice was humorless as he stared him down. "How the hell did you get here?"
"Taxi nigga, relax." He shrugged after swallowing a large gulp. Cindy glared at him and removed it from his hands.
"That's mine. And don't you think you're already good?" She raised a brow at him. She continued to watch him, confused as he laughed loudly.
"C'mon now, bay. You know we always sharin' shit. What's mine is yours and what's yours is mine, ya dig?" He slurred slightly, suddenly placing his hand extremely high on her upper thigh.
"Reezy!" Cindy blushed in embarrassment, shoving it off as she glanced at her friends. Their eyes were already wide at his boldness. Riley happened to catch her glance at them and scoffed.
"Please. Stop actin' like y'all niggas is surprised that we fuckin'."
"Reez!" Cindy raised her voice, slightly pushing him. "Shut up! Seriously!"
"What, girl? I ain't do nothin' but tell it like it is! Just like you did, 'member that?"
"And like we already told Cindy," Jazmine cut in, clearly trying to diffuse the situation that was quickly getting out of control. "We, as your friends, aren't going to be in your business. We were teasing before and didn't realize that we were hurting you guys, so we're sorry. What you both do in private is private, and we respect that."
Riley continued to mean mug her, sucking his teeth hard after she spoke. "Trick, you ain't respect our privacy back then!"
"Riley, watch it." Huey's eyes flashed.
"We never meant anything by it, Riley." Jazmine continued to explain. "We were just teasing."
"Well shit wasn't funny!"
"And you betta get that bass out ya voice when you talkin' to her, son." Caesar added with a glare, his Brooklyn accent becoming more prominent.
"Ain't nobody scared of you, nigga." Riley taunted him, prompting Caesar to start to rise from his seat.
"Reezy stop!" Cindy demanded, forcing him to look at her. She'd noticed that Huey had placed a hand on Caesar's shoulder and pulled him back down. "You are drunk and you're actin' a damn fool right now." She began, causing him to suck his teeth again and look away, but Cindy immediately pulled his focus back. "Let the old shit go. We're tryna have a good time tonight and let the past be the past. Can we please just move on?" She practically begged.
Riley stared at her for a minute before glancing at the others. Then he rolled his eyes with a shrug. "Fine."
"Thank you." Cindy said, feeling relieved. "Now… a toast." She said, raising her glass again. Everyone but Riley picked up theirs as well.
"I ain't got no drink." He complained.
"There's some water and ice in that pitcher, have at it." Cindy said passively before turning to the others. She was surprised to see he actually starting pouring himself a glass of water. "To a fresh start!"
"I think we all can drink to that." Jazmine agreed, glancing at the others as they clinked their glasses and drank. Riley had just finished pouring his glass after they drank, so he instead raised his glass sarcastically and toasted himself before taking a sip. After he put it down, he rose to his feet.
"I ain't come all the way here to sit and be bored. Y'all dancin' or what?" He said, not waiting for an answer as he started to walk towards the floor. Cindy shook her head after him.
"Maybe after I finish my drink." She said aloud to the others.
"Same." Jazmine agreed.
Caesar shrugged. "Guess I better go find Lindsay first." He said, standing and pulling out his phone. "I'll be around if y'all need me." He told them before walking away.
"I'll be right back. I'm going to use the men's room." Huey told Jazmine quietly.
"Okay baby." She kissed his cheek. "We'll be here." Once he was out of earshot, Jazmine turned and gave Cindy a wide-eyed look now that they were finally alone.
"Oh. My. Gosh."
"I can't even believe he did that!" Cindy hissed. "And why he's actin' like that!"
"I knew he was mad but seriously?"
"He's actin' like a complete douche!" Cindy vented, taking a sip of her drink. "I don't know what the hell's his problem."
Jazmine looked out onto the dancefloor and huffed. "Two minutes in and he's already got some girl hanging on his arm."
"Not surprised." Cindy rolled her eyes.
"Ugh. That dress is awful." Jazmine groaned as she continued to observe. "I'm assuming it's supposed to be a camel color but it looks way too nude on her."
"That's probably what she was goin' for." Cindy snickered, turning to look too. "Where?"
"Back there. On the edge of the dance floor."
Cindy's eyes steadied themselves in that direction before they widened.
Son of a fucking bitch.
"What?" Jazmine asked, sensing her tense up.
"Tish." Cindy uttered, glaring.
"Huh?"
"The bitch he's dancin' with, Jazz. Her name is Tish, the one I told you about. Figures her uppity-ass comes here." She sneered, watching her. She was wearing a strapless mini-dress with a serious V-neck that did look very nude against her skin tone.
"She does look… uppity." Jazmine agreed, continuing to watch them. "Wow, I think she's wearing snakeskin Louboutins." She said, spotting the red-bottom heels.
"Of course she is." Cindy muttered before tossing back the last of her drink. "You ready?" She asked, slamming it back down on the table in front of them.
"For what, pray tell?" Huey asked sarcastically, arriving back at the table.
"Grab your man and c'mon." Cindy spoke again to Jazmine, sliding herself out of the booth and marching to the dance floor. She heard them follow behind her, so she didn't bother looking back. She kept her eyes on Riley as she approached; Tish had her back to her, which Cindy was thankful for. When Cindy eventually got close enough, Riley finally looked up and noticed her. The realization that he'd just been spotted and busted displayed all over his face. Cindy kept hers poker as she looked away and walked right past him, venturing further onto the dance floor.
She spontaneously grabbed a handsome guy that was passing through as well and started to dance with him. Thankfully he'd been receptive and had easily smiled and danced with her. Cindy had noticed Huey and Jazmine were only a few feet away from her dancing together as well (Jazmine was dancing, Huey was barely two-stepping, unenthused). Eventually she'd spotted Caesar and Lindsay dancing together, which made her grin, but somehow her eyes kept landing back on Riley and Tish.
It was starting to piss her off.
In all their times where they were able to go clubbing together, the majority of the time, Riley would be dancing with Cindy. Even when they weren't, they would at least be in each other's proximity. They would check in on each other. They would talk. They would goof around. They would chill before getting back on the dance floor together. Granted, Cindy, Jazmine, Huey, and Caesar had been re-convening on the floor and dancing together after every few songs. But Riley seemed way too interested in allowing Tish to dance all over him than be with his friends.
Fuck that.
She was tired of watching.
"I'll be back." She shouted over the music to Jazmine, starting to walk away.
"You want me to come with you?" Jazmine asked, looking worried. Cindy shook her head.
"I'm good. Just goin' to get a drink real quick." She told her, walking off before she could respond.
Once she got back to the lounge area, she noticed that another group had taken their couch and the small table had been cleared of their previous glasses.
"Great." Cindy mumbled, heading instead to one of the bars that lined the wall.
"What can I get you?" The bartender asked when it was her turn.
"Can I just get one shot of Patrón, please?" She asked, reaching into her clutch for money.
"Make that two more while you fetch that, please." Cindy heard a voice from beside her. She paused and slowly turned to her right.
Tish smiled primly. "Hello, Cindy."
Son of a fucking BITCH.
"…Hey." Cindy replied, fighting so hard to keep her face straight. She just wanted the bartender to hurry the hell up.
"I didn't know you came to Ivory. I've never seen you around here. You following me?" She asked with a light toss of her hair. Of course it was sleek and straight down her back. Her makeup was caked and she seemed to have designer jewelry dripping off her body.
Cindy let out a dry chuckle. "I could ask you the same question."
Tish gave a false smile. "I saw you and your friends in a booth earlier with Esco. And then I saw you later finally come out on the floor after we were dancing. How come you never came over to have a turn with him?"
Cindy raised a brow at that. "I don't chase after Reezy. He can do what he wants."
"And he does." Tish smirked.
What?
"Here you are, ladies." The bartender set down all three of the tall shots. Cindy was about to lay her money on the counter when Tish put a light hand on her arm, making her go stiff immediately.
"I've got it, Cindy." She told her, dropping a fifty on the bar. "Esco sent me over to get him a shot with his money, so it's only fitting that he pays for both of his girls, right?"
Cindy blinked at her, confused with her context. "Sure…."
"Well… I should get back and deliver it for him." Tish said, lifting both shots in each hand. "You do know how much he loves his Patrón, right? It's his favorite." She said, as if informing her, which pissed Cindy off.
"Of course I know that." Cindy tried and failed to keep the curt tone out of her voice. "I'm his best friend." She decided to inform her again in case the bitch forgot. She was almost startled when Tish let out a bubble of laughter, as if that statement was hilarious.
"Oh Cindy," She slightly giggled once she composed herself. "We both know you're so much more." She eluded with a wink before turning around and strutting off.
Cindy stared after her in disbelief. Because what the hell was that? What was she talking about? And why did she keep bringing up Riley every five seconds? As if she was trying to purposely make her jealous? As if she….
Cindy took in a sudden breath, a lightbulb going off in her head when she watched her reunite with Riley on the edge of the floor. She handed him the shot and seemed to be talking to him and gesturing. It only took a moment for Riley to look over in her direction, an uneasy look on his face.
She knows.
Cindy turned around and downed her shot quickly, slamming it back on the bar. Then she pulled out her phone and opened her Uber app, requesting a driver to Ivory as soon as possible. There would be one coming that could be there within five minutes, which Cindy scheduled immediately.
Fuck it.
How DARE him. How dare his punk-ass even had the nerve to cop an attitude. How dare he had the audacity to act pissed and try to get all buck. For what? He'd done the same thing he was mad at them about. He'd gone on and told Tish but had the balls to bitch to Cindy like she was wrong for telling the others? At least she'd kept it in-house and had only told the crew. But Reezy now wanted to go around telling strangers? Bitches that didn't give a fuck about them and could lay all their business out in the street?
Hypocritical-ass bitch.
Cindy was done. She glanced back briefly at the dance floor as she put her phone back in her purse. The nigga and the bitch had gone back to dancing after finishing their shot; he hadn't even attempted to come over and see her. That was cool though. Cindy saw that Huey and Jazmine were still in the crowd dancing together, Caesar somewhere around there too. Instead of heading over, Cindy turned around and headed for the staircase. She would text Jazmine during the ride home.
But she was out.
Jazmine's POV
"Dammit, Jazmine." Huey glared as Jazmine laughed after she had managed to quickly snap a selfie of them on the dance floor.
"Love you babe!" She shouted giddily, admiring the photo.
"We doin' a Snapchat?" Caesar said loudly from behind them, moving closer. "Lemme get in on this."
"Okay!" Jazmine yelled back, handing him her phone so he could take it. His arms were much longer and would be able to get a better view.
"We live outchea, bruh!" He shouted, doing a video as he started rotating the camera. Jazmine smiled and cheered cutely, tossing up the peace sign before Caesar turned it to Huey, who stared at the camera annoyed. "Aw c'mon man, that was for the Snap! Turn up!"
"I don't turn up." He replied with an eyeroll.
"Ughhh redo." Caesar groaned, deleting the video.
"Hold on, where's Cindy? I want her in too." Jazmine told him, looking around. "She said she was getting a drink and would be back."
"I don't see her." Caesar said, looking too.
"Hmm, let me see my phone. I'll text her." She told him, thanking him once he handed it to her. "Oh wait, I just got a message from her." She said, opening it to read. Her eyes skimmed it over before they widened. "WHAT?"
"What's the matter?" Huey asked.
"She left!"
"What? Why?" Caesar was now looking over her shoulder.
"Because of him." Jazmine growled, looking up to glare at Riley across the dance floor.
"What happened now?" Huey demanded.
"I don't know. All it says is, 'I'm out Jazz. I can't deal with his lying ass no more.'" She read, showing him.
"What the hell?" He rolled his eyes.
"I wanna know what the hell he did now." Caesar spoke, frowning over at him as well.
Jazmine was silent, not really knowing what to say. All she knew was that she was livid. It was supposed to be a good night. They were supposed to make amends. They were supposed to have fun and let go. But now thanks to Riley's stupid behind, all of that was out the window.
She knew it was most likely the alcohol in her system, but she wanted nothing more than to march over and slap him across the face on behalf of Cindy. And that naked-looking tramp. Jazmine had a strong feeling that she had something to do with Cindy's leaving as well, and it didn't sit right with her.
She did not have a good vibe about her at all.
Not one bit.
